Flying WestJet's TRANSATLANTIC ECONOMY CLASS! 787-9 London to Calgary

- In February 2020, I flew from London-Gatwick to Calgary on board WestJet's 787-9 Dreamliner! Having flown the 787 a couple times before, I hadn't actually tried out their transatlantic Economy Class product. See what I thought of it in this trip report!

Those views from the skybridge are fricking amazing
Alex, I've watched my fair share of UA-cam aviation videos and I find your videos quite impressive! This was a masterclass of great videography mixed with enough entertainment to keep it interesting. Well done and thank you!
When i have used the Dreamliner on long trips from Vancouver to Asia, i have noticed i don't get as tired on this plane. They keep the humidity higher, and the air pressure better. Ex: instead of feeling you are at say 10,000 feet altitude, you only feel like at 6,000 ft. Makes a big difference. My figures may not be right, but you get the idea. It is about the same service, except there are two meals. Thanks for bringing back good memories.
Watching the dreamliner taxi from above is SUCH an experience. I'm definitely flying LGW-YYZ when travel returns! Thanks for this great review.
I love how your reviews are professional but also so funny at times!
Hey Alex: This is your usual, very professional review. I have followed you since day one and apart from only a couple of early glitches, your videos are great to follow and I alway look forward to seeing them. Thank you for this one that was enjoyable and informative. Cheers, Colin.
This is a fantastic video Alex, well done. It’s great to see an economy review on a heavy, especially across the pond. Cheers 👍🏻
Thank-you for sharing your flight experience with us, Alex. You certainly had the right seat for being so tall. Of course it is a shame that folks congregated in your space while waiting for the lavatory. I had a similar waiting experience for a flight from Brussels to JFK. The L-1011 had a broken refueling gizmo. We did board about 3 hours early, and I was able to watch the refueling crew use a hose to refuel via the wing top fuel access point. To keep everyone happy, the flight attendants started adult beverages flowing.
As many have stated, that was an awesome bridge from which you could view the aircraft at the gates. If I ever have to fly out of Gatwick, I will be sure to build in time to do some plane spotting from there.
It was nice that you were able to view Greenland as you chased the sun home. It is so much easier for me to cure jet lag when flying west for some reason.
Again, thank-you for the video. I look forward to viewing your next post.
Wow.... February 2020.
It feels like that was a Century ago. Especially when you look at how things was done and the situation back then.
Very nicely done. Good video, informative, well-written, well-delivered narration. And the skybridge footage was neat!
I flew on the WestJet 787-9 Dreamliner to Maui from Calgary in November 2019 and it was one of the best planes I've been on in my life. A really nice aircraft.
One of your best videos! Very informative as always. Yes, the airport skybridge is really cool.
Glad to have found this channel. Such well made videos, thanks.
Great vid. Based in YUL, I worked LGW for two summers (2014 and 2019) as an engineer for a Canadian airline. Good airport and great city. Can't wait to be posted back there.
Alex, a very professional and enjoyable trip report. Thank you.
Thanks Alex, great video story, UK spotting tips and wonderful photography . Hoping to fly this one day.
Awesome trip report. What a gorgeous sunset landing! Watching planes taxiing from above must be a very cool experience
Excellent video, Alex! I loved the skybridge which the planes taxi under. Incredible, and unusual close-ups of the Norwegian and WJ planes passing under! Awesome! I can only think of PHX (Phoenix) as another airport with that kind of bridge. I miss flying....I haven't flown since 2006! 😢
It was good to get to visit with you again.....take care!
Another super cool video Alex! That bridge view is awesome. Just love the 787!
I like your name, since I lived in the "Golden Age" of jet travel. The 707 was a great aircraft.
Thanks for the great video! I was curious to see just what Westjet's Transatlantic economy service is like! Very impressive! At least they give you the choice of having a pre dinner beverage before the meal service, unlike AC, which I find very tacky! Also, the meals look a lot more appealing. I will definitely give Westjet a try next time!
The best thing about the London to Calgary flight is that it takes off and lands at reasonable times. Compared to the all night Calgary to London. But I wish it went to Heathrow because the Piccadilly goes straight to our usual hotel quick, cheap and easy. We were thinking next fall but maybe this Oct or Nov might be a plan.
I flew to and from Gatwick in March of 2020 (excellent timing I know) and I had the exact same service. The delay is common as I was delayed for 2 hours on my return flight as well. Its nice to see service like that on a building airline like WestJet. Can't wait to see how it improves.
When I saw the opening clip my reaction was “who let you fly a drone in the secured area” but then I watched and saw you were on a bridge lol
Super great report.
So clear and perfectly informative.
Loved it 👍🙂👌
Hi Alex, it's my first ever viewing of your videos and I instantly like it so much that I did not do any fast forward. Really professional yet enjoyable.
Subscribed.
11:49 I'd have to agree with you. When I flew the exact same flight both ways in August 2019, I was thoroughly impressed with the complimentary meals on both flights.
I enjoyed this video enormously.
Very impressed with Westjet and also the narrator.I will definately give them a try when restrictions have been lifted from Gatwick to Toronto.
Thanks again sir.🙂
I really enjoyed watching this video. That bridge at Gatwick looks super cool. Can't wait to travel again!!!😭😭
Another awesome video Alex! Awesome footage from the bridge.
As always, awesome to watch one of your videos.
I liked how you added a bit of planes spotting and humour to your video!
We are just looking at booking flights for Vancouver with West Jet, after seeing your review, am so excited to fly with them now, thank you for your video.
Awesome video mate !!!! Westjet is awesome, had a great experience on there 767 series when they were flying it for the first time from YYZ to YYC !!!! Very friendly service, there flight attendants are the most customer friendly that I have experienced !!!! Cheers !!!!
Excited to fly this route in February!! I’ve watched this about 10 times
I will never no love this video, watched it dozens of times and it’s still great
Hey Alex Praglow✈ski Aviation Have A Wonderful Flight
Once again another great video. Westjet looks like a really good airline.. Hope you make it to Phoenix this week for the airliner's International convention.
Very good video. I was very impressed with the meal esp the S.P. Looked wonderful.
Great tip report. Thanks Alex.
So relaxing watching you videos Alex ..
First off, excellent video man! As a fellow YYC’r I am pretty excited to fly this route once things calm down. I always saw it pre pandemic but never had the time or money to really go. Seems like WJ does a pretty good on job long haul. I flew YYC to YOW and back a couple weeks ago on some sort of 737NG and the cabin was way too cramped, not enough over head bin capacity, late (due to unforeseen mechanical problems), and boarding was disorganized both times. I think both times they were overbooked.
My wife and I sat in 26A&B in August 2019! Chose it specifically, though the seat fee was less than it is now! Great leg room!!
nice video. You narrate nicely and show lots of interesting aspects of a stopover. I live in Calgary but have not been on a plane since 2005. I am currently disabled and just think it would be to much of a headache to try to fly. So for people like me, your videos allow us to live vicariously thru your videos, and it feels like we are right there with you enjoying the flight. Thank you very much
p.s.- I dont know if westjet is paying you to say only good words. But that meal in economy looks rather disgusting, so when I heard you praise the food, I thought for sure they were paying you to make this video
@@jamesbrunette3093 in my experience the food in economy class usually looks disgusting but actually tastes pretty alright. So I wasn’t too surprised when he said that the meal was good.
Great video! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great video, i really enjoyed it / long for the day I get back on flight!
That departure and takeoff video, damn so well shot nice and smooth, not to forget the support of nature.
Watching this video makes me think back to when I went on first airplane in 12 years a few weeks back when I moved from Calgary to Halifax and watching this video makes me miss my experience flying and the amazing city Calgary. Otherwise, amazing video man!!
DUDE THIS IS ONE PF MY FAVOURITE CHANNELS !!!
In 2019 when I went from yyc to Glasgow airport, my family had the middle seats with extra leg room. People always stepped on our feet and walked in front of us to get from one isle to another. It was quite satisfying when they got in trouble from the flight attendants
@6:55 spoiler auto bias up for flap deployment. Because of the tight tolerance between the spoiler panels and flaps, the spoilers are biased up when flaps are selected from the up position to prevent damage to either the flaps and spoiler panels.
Flying to Vancouver next June in that seat . Thanks for the post
Thank you for the video.
Great video Alex,we are going with WestJet in September to Halifax via Toronto on this aircraft,so at least we know what to expect.
Had a similar experience with delays when taking TS outta gatwick. Spent nearly all day at the airport lol. Though while spotting I was able to find my gate by chance before anyone else.
Looks good, hopefully will be giving them a try at the beginning of May - for a flight from London to Las Vegas - many thanks for review 🙏🇬🇧🙏🇬🇧
I flew with Westjet from London to Ottawa via Halifax. Great flight, best price, and the food was good (butter chicken). That was on their 737 Max. My flight was october of 2019.
Great trip report Alex! Would love to fly the WS787 one day, and that bridge is probably even better in person!
OMG, i love the dreamliner wing flex. Very cool video.
Brilliant video just what we needed as my wife and I are flying out to Calgary then finally Saskatoon on the 25th This month with first time for me on West-jet normally Air Canada 🇨🇦 cheers 🍻
Love your thoroughness.
love the sound of the flaps retracting and the engine
Great video. Just a general comment. I never will understand why airlines started charging for exit door seats. I used to be for ABP's that could help in a possible emergency if crew became incapacitated.
Great video mate
Thanks, I am going to Rome July. Thanks for the advice
Excellent trip report... :):):)
Amazing video can’t wait to fly again soon
It looked a hell of a lot roomier than that awful 777 10 seats layout. Nicely done Alex
I am also a WestJet fan. I am pleasantly surprised that they sort of managed to hang in
during the Covid years. Gosh, speaking about unfortunate timing. The people I know that
work for WestJet are very proud that they are, and I wish them good luck and an A+ for tenacity. Thank Alex for making me forget for 16 minutes and 2 seconds that the world is on fire.
Greetings from YVR
great video as always!
I took an air transat flight from Toronto to Calgary once. I'm glad I was only with them one way. I couldn't imagine taking one across the Atlantic..
I actually have always enjoyed time spent in Gatwick and Heathrow, what awesome places to people watch world traveller's coming and going. I thought your inflight plane info was very useful especially regarding seat selection as a strategy to get more space for less $. I also enjoyed your seat screen detail and utility info vs just drooling over the inflight food service, which in economy, is never rarely worth writing home about.
An amazing trip report!!!
Well all i can say is, welcome to my birthplace and one of my favourite airports around London. Stay safe Alex. Still it was a nice video.
Solid review
Great review. Thanks
What a great quality video !!
Excellent video as always! And yeah, Gatwick literally is a mall haha. My first and only time going through there I was VERY surprised that clearing security led to a fragrance shop. For a second I thought I was at Shopper's Drug Mart XD
Bridge over taxing lines is amazing! Wow
Thanks for the info on the one way ticketing.
That's cool that they give you a voucher if the plane is late. Taking this plane Toronto to London in Sept. 2021 I will also be in economy. Great review
Awesome trip report!
Thank you for sharing
Sorry forgot ….. amazing video. Thanks so much!
The 787-9 is a beautiful and modern Plane with nice Features.
gatwick is really such a cool airport! I really think that bridge deserves more attention
The cabin is pretty with those colors!
Great video got me thinking about booking Westjet.
Nice 👍 WestJet 787 economy class service looks alright✅! From Edmonton Canada 🇨🇦.
Great vid. Cheers to YYC.
That chocolate pudding is the same we received in biz on AA from Venice to Philadelphia this past summer lol.
Nice flying.
Would love to see an updated version of this trip now that we're post COVID and now it seems that Calgary flights from London are only going from Heathrow!
I have a picture of the plane you flew on! I took it as I was taxiing in a CRJ from Calgary to San Francisco.
I'm watching your video, simply because the flight at 3:08...is mine lol
Tomorrow is your 10th anniversary for your first upload! Congrats!
Thank you, I am also missed international flight for the last two years now.
This exact plane is currently sitting idle on a parking apron in Calgary. I hope they put it back in action soon.
I've made the mistake of booking the front row of economy on a BA 787 (9 across just like WestJet). The already narrow seat from the 9 across density was even narrower due to the table and TV taking up armrest room.
Last year I was lucky enough to fly in economy on a JAL 787 where it's only 8 seats across. So much better!
THAT is some GREAT vid!
Absolutely Fantastic review did you enjoy the UK?? Wow this looks an absolutely fantastic airline and aircraft much improved from the 767 they had
