The Complete WestJet 787 Dreamliner Review

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- In this video, I take a trip to Calgary, Canada, at the invitation of the Canadian airline WestJet’s guest experience team, to enjoy a flight from Calgary to London aboard their brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aeroplane. This video will feature not only WestJet Business Class, but also look into Premium and Economy cabin. Moreover, I share some behind the scenes product development story on the WestJet 787.
I fly in to Calgary on one of WestJet’s Boeing 737’s and before I go on my voyage on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with Westjet, I take the opportunity to visit the stunningly beautiful Banff national park in Alberta. Banff national park is located within the Canadian Rocky mountains and is a UNESCO world heritage site and also Canada’s first, and flagship, national park, established in 1885. It is west of Calgary and covers an area of more than 6000 square kilometres. I see the beautiful, bright turquoise blue lakes of the park, fed by rushing streams and rivers which are in turn fed by glacial melt water. Banff national park is a real jewel in the crown of Canada and I highly recommend a visit!
After my visit to the park, I get back to the aviation side of things and start my journey from Calgary to London at the international terminal of Calgary airport, making use of the Aspire lounge for international departures.
I take my flight in business class, which consists of sixteen individual private pods with lie-flat seats which can convert in to a bed. There are also 28 premium economy seats on the WestJet Boeing 787 Dreamliner and a further 276 economy seats spread across two cabins within the aircraft.
I am given a warm welcome in to the WestJet Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a personalised introduction to the facilities afforded by my business class pod by a member of the flight attendant team. I am shown the large, touchscreen 4K entertainment screen, which offers a variety of in-flight games, television programs, films and music and am given complimentary, noise cancelling headphones. I am also shown the adjustable arm-rests of the seat and the storage bins where I can tuck away my belongings. My welcome is capped off with the WestJet signature drink - a lovely refreshing mix of green tea and cranberry juice - and also the provision of a complimentary Matt & Nat amenity kit.
My flight from Calgary to London on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with WestJet is over eight hours long and takes me to a maximum altitude of 36,000 feet, but before I can get in to the air, the cold, snowy weather in Canada means that the wings of the aircraft have to be de-iced but to WestJet’s credit, their staff work very well in the adverse weather conditions to keep everything running on time.
Up in the air, I enjoy some exceptional, restaurant quality WestJet cuisine. The service in premium economy and business class is as in a restaurant, with each dish being taken to the customer individually, rather than being given from a trolley, and on special non-slip trays to reduce accidents. WestJet have paid great attention to detail by integrating reminders of Canada’s fabulous nature in to their food service - the food trays of economy are bright, turquoise blue just like the lakes of the Banff national park and the salt and pepper pots in business class are made in the shape of the Rocky mountains.
In premium economy, customers enjoy a rice and curry dish, refreshing and authentic draft Canadian beer and a salad complete with goat’s cheese. The vegetarian option is extraordinary - a vegetarian shepherd’s pie, the signature dish of Canadian chef Bill Alexander. In business class, I am able to choose from lots of smaller dishes rather than having just one, big main meal. I enjoy Italian antipasto, smoked salmon mille-feuille, alberta beef short ribs and sour cherry pie. There are also Ravioli dishes - each one unlike the other with irregular pasta cuts, representing the nature of Canada. I think that high praise is due to WestJet for the phenomenal quality of their airline food, which I think has really put them on the map as a major international airline and shows their considerable development from their start as a low cost, budget airline.
The meal is rounded off nicely with the serving of some special, Canadian Ice wine - one frozen grape yields only one drop of the very sweet wine - before I get some quality sleep and land at London Gatwick.
All in all, I highly enjoyed my trip with WestJet on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner aeroplane and my hat is off to them for their food. What did you think of the beauty of the Banff national park and the flight itself? I'd love to hear from you in the comments section down below and, as always, thanks for watching!
i hope you appreciate my honestly in disclosing the invitation. I have try my best to be objective and have given constructive feedback as well. By collab with WestJet, I want to show more of the behind the scenes stuff on how their products have evolved and resemble the nature of Canada through the engagement with excellent crew.
But again, I have to admit it was one of the very best Trans-atlantic experience.
You made everything crystal clear Sam, just like those Canadian lakes. The quality of the video, the editing, music, chats with staff and pilot all came together perfectly in a totally entertaining video. It would certainly encourage me to try out this Airline should I get to visit the Calgary region.
Sam Chui travel to Vancouver!!!
I really want you to try PIA as they've really improved over the years and you will really enjoy
there is no objective by invitation
It does make us, your viewers keep our trust in you for being completely crystal clear about your invitation. Thank you very much for your amazing work!
Thanks so much for joining us, Sam, and for the great overview of what it's like to fly transatlantic on our 787 Dreamliner. We look forward to welcoming you on board again in the future.
WestJet why would you pay money for this when you already have had 2 great aviation bloggers do this for free, it’s barmy
im looking forward to flying westjet one day
I hope your sale to Onyx doesnt hurt you
Westjet you couldn't pay me enough Money for me 2 step a Foot on the B787 Dread)Liner POS its such a horrid Aircraft, However if u had an A350 i am happy 2 Jump on it in a heart beat !!! I just don't don't trust Boeing anymore its as simple as that !!!
Good move on bringing Sam in, WestJet
That crew is so hardworking, knowledgeable, and formal. Impressive service.
Love how he's like "OH MY GOD! A DEER!" lol those are one of the most common animals here in Canada!
Flight ATC depends where u live
I am from England and I have woods in my garden and we have deer, foxs, lots of birds and rabbits in my garden
Not in bc
@@mohamedtaha4613 Yes in BC... Northern and Eastern more probably.
Wtf. I cannot go for a walk without seeing 10 or 20 deer.
BC has tones of deer.
Right on Sam for recognizing the Calgary ramp crews!!! Former SFO UAL ramper here!!
The rampers should get some credit as I myself have done some bags loading in my 20s at LAX for a night as volunteer. Miss the UAL 747 at SFO!
Former IAD ramp guy here! Small world!
Yeah being rampie is a tough job. Really fun sometimes though.
It’s sad when the 747 is retired by another airline. I flew it only when I was a baby. But with passing time airlines will always make their newer and more advanced planes collet to fly.
OMG it really is true! Canadians are the most friendly people on earth!
I was part of the WJ 787 project. Super proud of seeing it in action. Wishing all the people I met at WJ success!
I love Canada home is in Quebec thank you for talking well about our land......
Westjet is slowly proving to me that it's the best airline in Canada. Looking forward to flying with them more in the future (flew with them once).
Air Canada gets government subsidies so they will stay in business no matter what, Westjet is 100% private so they have to earn your dollar to stay competitive.
A few years ago my employer, based in Toronto, was booking flights for myself and a fellow employee based in British Columbia. When they started asking us about flight times and so on, all they did was mention Air Canada. Both of us mentioned, can we fly Westjet instead? They were shocked, we want to fly Westjet? Emphatically we both said YES! Westjet from day one has been an incredible airline, with good prices, excellent customer service and employees who really go out of their way to make the customer feel appreciated. I have travelled with them for business, and personal travel and what sealed the deal is how we were treated when we needed to get back to Saskatchewan in hurry. The lady in the call centre, yes call centre, was attentive, sympathetic and exceptionally helpful. We were shocked that when we checked in she had left a note on our file that we had to travel for an emergency and even more shocked when we landed in Saskatoon the airline had prioritized the offloading of our luggage and helped us navigate the airport. I simply do not have enough praise for Westjet and its employees.
That 787 looks nice. Thank you for sharing Sam!
787 is a beautiful aircraft I have always wanted to fly it.
YUK its Putrid looking on the outside , the A350 is far more Superior to the B787 Dread)Liner POS
The 787 does indeed look nice on the outside at least , that’s where the attraction ends sadly . In economy the level of seat comfort is in my opinion below par . Only JAL offer a 2-4-2 configuration , all others offer 3-3-3 . In other words legacy carriers offer the same seat as LCC but at additional cost . I do not find flying a 787 in economy a good experience, that’s just my opinion of course .
keep your preferences to yourself. AIrbus spends it's time coping Boeing. the A350 is a carbon copy of the B-787.
Elad Fabrice . The comments are my opinion , and you have yours . I may not agree with your comments but I wouldn’t tell you to keep them to yourself . The A350 is not a carbon copy of the 787 .
I am truly proud to be a Canadian. Glad you were able to explore the Beauty of Canadian nature, service and culture through this experience!!

WestJet is my favourite airline I was flying from YXE to MCO and I was thirty minutes delayed and the flight attendants were so nice to everyone glad to see them grow from low cost to second largest airline in Canada
I am another WestJet cabin crew member. I’ve flown with Lisa, Sam’s cabin manager a few times and she is absolutely wonderful!
Wow! This is probably the best experience. You get popcorn, entertainment is amazing, and the food looks amazing. Awesome job WestJet! Feels so good to be Canadian.
WestJet flight was one of my best trans-atlantic experience. Once the crew ironed out some of the pain points, I'm sure it will be even better!
Thanks Sam!
It’s so honouring to have such a famous person to reply
I went to Canada last year and it was the best holiday of my life, can't wait to come back there 😊

So happy you visited my home town of Calgary and you enjoyed the Canadian hospitality Westjet offered. Hopefully you visit again soon!!

I’m from Canada and for sure hats off to the workers who work very hard in such cold conditions. Although, sometimes delays in Canada can become quite extreme
WestJet is stepping up their game!!! Loved everything here, from the food to the service to the hard product. Premium experience for sure. - Red
westjet being sold.
@@ursodermatt8809 I hope they change the decor too. I hate the teal. It looks dull and outdated.
flew WestJet's original "premium" with the "plus" going from St. John's to London on the 737, loved every minute of it! service was awesome and the people were amazing!
I haven't finished the video but i am loving the weather
I like your sense of humor!
As a Canadian who has been out of the country for over ten years now, it was great to see this video. Calgary was the last city I lived in. But raised in Kelowna and very familiar with West Jet on the short hops. Not surprised about May snow in Calgary. WestJet has come along way. Does anybody remember CP Air?
Oh Sam, that was not "tough" conditions. Come see us in Jan or Feb.
John T good point, although it did look a bit icy out there!
This is normal for Calgary in May. We even have snow in North Bend, WA in May. Mt Rainier will have snow in Late June.
I'm a bit jealous of the weather there cuz over in Australia the whole countrys on fire and we're about to have 4 day of +40c weather🔥🔥
Yep! Thats about right!
@@OfficerDucky meanwhile in BC we were having -40c weather earlier this year!
Oh My Gosh, WestJet is on the dogs! Food: Phenomenal Seat: Nice Hospitality: Warm and professional And what i love is every little detail, from the rose mist sprayed on your bed, to the sound of the loon bird, things to do in Gatwick, the unique cutlery, bowls and bread bowls to the indigenous stitching of the ECONOMY seat. "It was a tremendous experience," -very well said Sam
I have been a subscriber since 350k and your video quality has drastically improved big time 👍👍👍👏👏👌
Thanks for the feedback. I strive to continue to improve!
Your personality is great !

WestJet is Canada's aviation pride and joy ❤ Always love flying with WestJet
friendly & active cabin crews 🤩 amazing service from WestJet I must say..
considering he gets paid by westjet i'm sure headoffice tells them to be extra-nice, they aren't that nnice in real life
@@ravieromartino7244 totally agree with u
@@ravieromartino7244 they are lol Westjet and their staff are amazing
My family always flies Westjet when going from London to Calgary, where my cousins and relatives live, and I absolutely LOVE Westjet. The atmosphere, the friendliness, everything. Might not be like Emirates or Qantas but is DEFINITELY a very excellent airline to fly with.
State of the art reviews Sam !!! Just keeps getting better and better. Keep them coming !!!
It's so refreshing to see videos before the Covid.
Having money to travel and traveling freely.
Thanks Sam.
The crew is amazing... I wish my flights were this nice.
My wife and I were in Toronto last year and we went to the Peller Winery and saw how they make the ice wine and got a taste. Amazing! However, at the winery it was $500 USD for a "half bottle" We only bought one and will savor it for sure. Thanks for featuring it in the video.
So glad you got to experience such a beautiful part of Canada Sam! 🇨🇦
Canadians are the friendliest people on earth!
another great video from Sam!
I see Sam videos I hit the like buttom before even watching it. The cocktail they served you looked fantastic ! Also theres a guide about what to when you arrive in london including hotels, restaurants and even entertainment options, the food served on the plane seemed delicious tho. definitely wanna try this once. Thanks for the vid as always.
Wonderful video Sam thank you so much for doing that. As a Canadian I have watched WestJet grow from a low-cost carrier to what they are now. I have mixed emotions about how WestJet is today, compared to how it was, but in the end WestJet is slowly becoming Canada's number one airline. With the addition of the 787 they have entered into new markets on the world stage and having a person like you who many, myself included, consider a legend in the aviation industry do a segment on WestJet is incredible. I can't wait to watch more videos from you, hopefully more from Canada.
Sam I love you and your videos so much. I'm so happy to see you visiting Canada! Thank you for showing some of Canada's beautiful landscape.
As US travelers just south of the border, we use WestJet to visit our daughter in HNL. This makes me want to take our first trip to the UK using WestJet. Nicely presented... the WestJet folks are wonderful!
Nice and professional editing!
And I love the music!
Keep going Sam!
Thank you so much @AlexFlyer
@@SamChui What is the song called? I really liked it. Shazam will not even register it. Please let me know, thank you!
Being Canadian, I appreciate your enthusiasm for our country, Sam. You really need to try some of the flights into the bush in Twin Otters and/or other land and float planes. The scenery is mind-boggling gorgeous. We won't talk about the "carnivorous" black flies. You know about them from your Mtl, Val d'Or, gold mine flight in the 200. Come back whenever you can, you will always be welcome in Canada.
Teacher: Who do you want to be like when you grow up?

I live in Canada and my parents have been to Banf, awesome vid Sam. I flew with west jet once when I was going from Vancouver to Toronto YYZ. Edit: congrats for 1.3mill subs!!!!!! Btw I'm one of them:D
So happy to see you came to my country and tried our airline. So humbled. Please visit more .. Thanks!
I have been on both Westjet 787 business and Air Canada 787 business. They have quite similar design in terms of the seats. Same screen, same large table with a rail. However, the color schemes on Westjet really feels like I am in a premium apartment. The wooden color combined with dark blue/ carmel colored lether is way better than AC. Although I am a frequent flyer on AC but not Westjet, I do think the interior felling is way better than AC. The foods are both good, in North American airlines.
That looked pretty awesome!
He deserves loads and tons more subscribers

Awesome! I was hoping for a Westjet review.
I'm a Calgarian and am so happy you decided to come for our Dreamer! Come back during the summer - the Rockies are even more beautiful when it's all green. :)
WestJet is a totally awesome airline. I highly recommend flying with them!
Just flew WestJet YVR-LGW on an older 767 in Plus but the crew, service and meals were outstanding. In fact I had the ginger beef you showed and my seat mate had the veggie shepherds pie, my tray and meal was identical and it was by far the BEST food and service of any premium economy I've flowed, the restaurant style service, the pouring of wine from bottles is something you almost never see in PE. Well done Westjet! Flew back on an AC 787-9 in the business class pods which are identical to Westjet's but Westjet's food, service, unique elements and attention to detail looks better than AC.
Canadians are so nice and welcoming! 👌
You are one of the best aviation travellers/vloggers I have ever seen, You don't just do aviation you show us where you are like the wildlife like you did in this video. Keep up the good work!
I hate it when people assume all of Canada is snowing when in Edmonton which is 2 hours away from Calgary is above 20 degrees.
Alberta..... all four seasons in one day. I'm NE of Edmonton so its funny to see a wee spring flurry in Calgary getting attention.
we use celcius
I'm from Vancouver, and we only get snow for 10 or less days of the year
Grande Prairie here. It's basically just constantly either winter here or mud everywhere. We don't get much else.

Sam, you're really doing a great job showing the personality of the various airlines you're reviewing.
Westjet “Love where you're going”.
Canada is such a beautiful country. I’m glad WestJet has gone the extra mile to incorporate some of this beauty work to their service!
Were they once a low cost airline, as a startup before they transitioned to a full service one?
Who else loves sam’s hairstyle?
spot on, go WestJet, I studied their strategy at school, I believe they will be one of the best in the future

Hi Sam,wow a great video showing us of your experience flying business class with Westjet.Thats a nice aircraft the dreamliner 787,I think the interior looked really nice, good colors, relaxing to the eye,the meals the service provided by the cabin crew was really good and as you mentioned,it will probably make improvements as time goes on as they look for more ways of making improvements.
Thankyou so much Sam for showing and sharing the Westjet experience on board the Dreamliner 787.
Thankyou.☺👍👍
Hope the flight attendants are that attentive and give the seat tours to every other normal premium passenger and not just Sam Chui.
Yes they indeed gave the same tour to everyone. It was everyone's first time flying the WestJet new Business Class.

Okay, I have to stop the video at the 10:00 min mark, was anyone else sitting at their computer thinking that was an "ok" looking J class meal ? Then it turns out it was for W ?? Holy smokes i'm a little blown away at that. The J product itself looks good, thanks for posting the video.
Who’s watching this in quarantine and appeared on your recommend 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for disclosing it was an invitation. And thanks for showing economy class as well. To be honest, without vloggers like you, we'd be non-the-wiser. I hope the airlines appreciate your influence which is better than any advert.
This 787 has 320 seats right?. Wow that is cool. I really like the livery on Westjet 787. It looks canadian
Yes 320 seats spot on!
Hey Sam, now please tell us your honest opinion of this 787 3x3x3 economy seat configuration (or others 787 if you've tried them). It would be nice if one day you take a 787 full flight on premium economy and another in main economy (again in 3x3x3, not in JAL's 2x4x2) and compare with what you've got with CX A350 when you did a similar experiment. Cheers...
I love westjets new livery as well. It makes Air Canada's new livery look like it was designed by a 3 year old. Its It's awful.
I love how polite and Canadian sounding the lovely stewardesses were. Also, best ice wine comes from Niagara! Cheers and thanks for the report! WestJet is always a satisfying experience.
Let's do aer lingus next
I remember flying WestJet when they first started. Basically they were a budget airline serving Western Canada. I'm glad to see them expand their service, I would fly them international now.
I always book my flights according to your reviews
Wow, the crew are so friendly and formal!
What happens when someone chooses to take the noise-cancelling headphones with them when deplaning?
Good job, thanks man. I am flying Business class from Toronto to Vancouver in a 787-9 Dreamliner. It is a much shorter flight, but your video helped me prepare as what to expect in Business class, Thanks.
Are we going to get the same treatment if we fly business class with WestJet or this is only special for Sam?
Same
I can ensure you will get the same treatment. The awesome crew spent their time introducing the seat to each of the customers. What I have filmed is exactly what you will get. Nothing more nothing less.
Sam never trashes an airline, only suggests areas for improvement. His videos are easy to watch because he focuses on the positive aspects. Plus, sometimes staff has a bad day and some reviewers will trash the whole flight gate to gate. That's a more serious form of bias than stating up front that you're sponsored on a particular flight then not rate so much as point out the positives of the flight.
Besides, bias or not, sponsors or not, you'll never see an airline ripping out an existing seat and installing a luxury suite when Sam is on the way. A good portion of the flight is your seat, its features, surroundings and cleanliness -- the hard product that is a constant.
Canada is beautiful and I love the airline hostess’s they look amazing well served and the amazing dishes , love for Canada 🇨🇦
What a unique last name after the Devil
