- Long lines, metal detectors and pat downs are a common staple of the airport process. But are these security measures actually efficient and effective? Join Michael Aranda for a new episode of SciShow where he breaks down the science of the security process, the machines, and the reason behind them.

Yeah, but it's all theater. Security theater, to be precise. None of this actually helps make flights any safer.
It's security theater, not security science.
tbh, it's more to do with the colour of your skin
You spelled "Security Theater" wrong.
The funny part is that an hour-long wait is so common in US airports. I've never waited more than 10 minutes flying out from any airport in the UK or Europe...
Dear SciShow, your video says what airport security does to us and our belongings, but doesn't answer the question of whether it's effective.
Airport security check points are unnecessary for the same reasons why it's unnecessary to have security check points at bus stops and train stations.
Last time I went through airport security they pulled me aside and I thought they were going to give me a free dental checkup. Cool, I thought. Nope, NOPE, NOPE!!! "cavity search" in not what I thought it was.
98% of people watching this are thinking of getting weed on the plane.
And yet all you need to trick all of this is a corrupt security team.
Can you do one on cerebral aneurysms? I had one rupture at 19 and would love to learn more!
"futuristic phone booth"
"I caught a terrorist!"- no TSA agent ever
Trolling the airport security: pack a water gun in your bag, stuff some baggies of applesauce in your shoes, and rub your hands with firecracker gunpowder before arriving at the airport.
one time i forgot to take off my belt so the metal belt buckle caused a "groin anomaly" so they had to pat my sac down
something ive always wondered is why wouldnt someone just attack the 100 or so people crowding at the security lines themselves? why go after the planes when theres tons of people packed together like sardines right there? fire 1 bullet into the crowd and its gonna pass through at least 5 people and no one checked for bombs or guns yet at that point, thats the reason for the line. you could bring a damn claymore
But what if you handle explosives as a job and don't wash enough?
It's like you knew I was taking a plane alone for the first time ever today! What a neat coincidence!
What if you just showered really damn well after handling explosives?... The swab thing seems pointless if they can keep themselves clean with simple clothing .-.
An airport was once concerned about my heat pack (I have migraines and air pressure changes are a trigger for them; the heat pack can help tone one down when I feel it coming and lessen my need for medication). Apparently, this is a common thing they double check on because she recognized it for what it was immediately upon sight and poke. :)
