Kristy Mcnichol was such a great actress … it’s a pity she retired from acting because she had bipolar disease … she still has a special place in my heart
I was a teenager when this show aired. I was 17 years old when I graduated High School in 1980. When I was in High School, the Minimum Drinking Age was 18 years old in New Jersey. It was lowered to 18 in 1973 because of all of the 18 year old young men that were drafted and sent to Vietnam. My birthday is at the end of December. I turned 18 at the end of 1980. That year the Minimum Drinking Age was raised to 19 years old. The age was raised back to 21 years old in 1983. I have to say that looking back, the drinking age being 18 years old while I was growing up, did make underage drinking much more available to a younger group of teenagers.
This show is so good, they really showed addiction and withdrawal so well, how she got so desperate that she didn't even care about hiding it, just to get alcohol.

This was around the same time that Doug's sister revealed her alcoholism. I am surprised that the show focused on this theme twice within such a short time, but both episodes were very good.
They really wrote Buddy to be a one-dimensional character -- regardless of the conflict, she always responded with anger. It's always, he/she lied to me with no expression of any empathy. It was always about how SHE felt. Even at age 15, a good friend responds to a situation like this with concern. Not Buddy.
Good point about the writing, but she did change her attitude and learn lessons taught to her by her parents, mostly Kate. This is what kids her age do, they make mistakes and learn lessons about life as they mature.
Buddy was scared, actually terrified of what was happening to her friend and the potential loss of their friendship. You'd be expecting too much if you think she should have initially behaved like a mature adult. She was able to overcome her feelings and go talk. She did a great job.
When I was younger I used to steal my father's drinks, sometimes diluting the contents to hide the evidence. My mother is no fool, and she would punish me severely but nothing worked. When this episode of Family aired on AKBC Uyo my mother, who was was watching TV with us, used it as an example and claimed I could end up like Laura if I wasn't careful. Ironically I was fifteen at the time, the same age as Buddy and Laura, and later that evening when my father once again complained his pineapple brandy tasted weaker than usual my mother scolded me and said "I'm so glad you watched that programme today". Buddy's teenaged friend Laura is played by the then 22-year old Carol Jones (guess they needed somebody of age to handle the drinking scenes).
Doubt it was real liquor
@@m.e.d.7997 I doubt it too. It's just that they didn't have to call on a welfare worker as they would have with a minor.
"18 to look younger" is what they call it in LA.
It's much easier to have an adult (over 18) on set.
But she could've passed for 15!
God this was good
Laura deserves to q yelled at by Buddy for drinking and lying to Buddy! Buddy played detective and realised Laura lied to her! Buddy hates people who lie to her! We all have to lie once and awhile to protect the people we love!
Rodney Sefton Buddy was upset about her friend drinking! It is normal for people to get angry when people drink!
