It’s very realistic when the girl went to the principal to complain about one of the students harassing her. They never do anything. They dismiss it as “bothering” because he’s a student with ‘good reputation.’ I’ve seen it happen in my uni, and it’s disgusting.
I find it sad that the only time they finally decide to do something about it is when a girl (a white girl compared to the black Latina girl reporting to the principal for harassment) straight-up confesses that this rodent of a student sexually assaulted her.

I am a man and when I was a boy a group of girls would scratch me and even cut me with scissors, they would trash my stuff and the teachers, principal of the school wouldn’t do anything either. I’ve known plenty of other dudes that faced similar problems, it is a bully thing, not a gender thing

@@chloehanna9225 I wouldn't say clueless but he was being wilfully ignorant. He tried to stay safe by not choosing a side this entire time. That makes this scene so powerful. Even someone like him sees the seriousness of the situation in the end and starts endorsing Moxie in his own way.
I think he just wanted to stay out of the drama. That, and he was a bit ignorant. I don't fully blame him because it's normal to not be aware of how bad an issue is when you yourself didn't have to experience it. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it can be hard sometimes. I feel like he knew this was a problem and means well, he just didn't understand to the degree that the girls in his class did. If he chose to stay the same and not change, and what matters is that he changed in the end.
To be honest, I don’t think he was a jerk, strict maybe, but not a jerk. As a teacher, he would be in a tight spot. If he showed support for Moxie, a group which had encouraged role breaking, he could get in trouble. But if he didn’t, he would be called out by his students.
@@saturnssubliminals That is true. People don't realize that teachers only enforce these rules. They don't create them and they themselves might not agree with them either. They just have to enforce the rules so they can keep their job. It's the principals and the people in charge of school districts who are to blame. It's like blaming a cashier for the rules that a grocery store has.

@Jonathan Votta While I agree that some scenes were cheesy and unrealistic, namely Emma casually revealing her dark secret in public, or Vivian and Seth having a date in a funeral home, I honestly liked the movie and book overall, since it featured an important message of feminism, sticking together, having your voice heard, and never giving up.
@Jonathan Votta In all fairness movie has heart and while it didn't cover other types of feminism (asian women, trans women, black women, etc) as much as the lead character (with her being white), still a better teen movie than other netflix films and felt real especially with the antagonists. Plus, do give points for the teacher at least trying to be an ally, and while the principal is a jerk, it's a reality that she may have been someone who wanted equality but just gave up due to the world being harsh. If you watched The Boys, the principal is Queen Maeve, someone who once cared but just doesn't due to burnout

This movie is needed. If you find the reactions from the students (specifically the female lead) in this movie to be problematic, you're not wrong, but you need to weigh them against the problematic situation the teens find themselves in that cause them to react in the first place. This movie doesn't advocate for bad behavior and even uses multiple characters like the best friend, boyfriend and mother to call it out. But it does tell young women (and men), that their observations are real, their feeling and frustrations are valid, and that they're not alone. It tells them it's okay to use your voice, you should never have to stay silent, and it demonstrates the community you can find/create by breaking that silence.
I'm pretty sure people already know they can speak out its definitely not needed.

I’ve seen many people saying, “The shy girl is annoying! The African American girl deserves to be the main character!”
No. The African American girl was already a feminist and stood up for herself. If she was the main character, there would be no character development, and the movie would be in a straight line for the whole thing. It makes sense that the shy girl would be the main character, because she realized that she doesn’t need to keep to herself anymore.
THIS. i loved how moxie was firstmost an ideal, a principle of freedom and dignity, from such an insecure real girl who started to understand that she didn't have to subject herself and others to unfairness just because someone said so. She matured step by step and was as real as a character can be in a movie.
You can see how the feminist friend is slowly losing hope for that school, she's fighting alone and doesn't expect for others in that school to care yet the main character is watching her and learning in silence. Her, the black friend and the Asian best friend have all different personalities but i love how the show told us that it doesn't matter if you're a leader or a silent allie, even the smallest show of care can indeed start a revolution, that even when you think it's meanless it's not, because others will see and pass the ideal.
Loved also the boyfriend, a good depiction of good masculinity who has always been supportive but that protect himself from the verbal abuse her girlfriend did to him and how he didn't want to have anything to do with her until she really showed she was sorry

@@amalajohn1127 well there are numerous things that are wrong with this movie from the storytelling to the way they try to convey the message. Such as with the main character bullying her friend because she just won’t come to terms with her feminist ideals, how the students just bully the teacher who is there working for minimum wage and taking care of a bunch of teenagers who thing everything that comes out of their mouth are these pearls of wisdom. How they treat the male characters and force them to be assholes. Or how they wrote in Mitchell committing a rape in the last fifteen minutes of the film, which they are trying to use to justify the girls’ shitty behaviours. But in all honesty it does reflect a true aspect of feminism; turning people into bitter antagonizers who are catty, bully people who don’t conform or partake in their trash fire of a movement, and ostracize women who don’t care for contemporary feminism.
You don’t understand how much I feel powerful from this film I LOVE IT we need more films like this

Loved the movie, especially the black women struggles/representation that was mentioned. Made it even more enjoyable to watch as a bw.
what struggle she can do anything she wants nowadays. This is not 1939 for her to have struggles that is shown here. more likely she needs to struggle against depression and anxiety which are mental health issues not to be loud and toxic and cause a riot .

I was once told to “hold it” when asking for the bathroom at my conservative catholic school because we were taught never to publicly talk about a “women’s issues”... well I started my period mid class and needed the bathroom cause I didn’t want to have wash blood out of my shorts and dress later. So I told him I needed it for my monthly and his response was, “too much information, be more discreet next time!” I wish I’d said, “you mean like... how I discreetly tried to pass it off as a simple desire to use the toilet?”

As a woman concerned about women’s rights I find this movie has some confusing messages. How is tripping up the pirate guy at the and of the movie a feminist achievement or something to be celebrated? That is plain bullying.
@Osamudiamen Blessing hey, thanks for answering! I see your point, but couldn't someone else say the same about the guy spitting in her drink? "It was clearly a joke" - I think all bullying and bullies need to be held to the same standards - otherwise we are seeing the bullied/victims turning into bullies/perpetrators themselves, instead of healing the wound and finding remedy and resolve. In my view, if the movie's purpose is to make a point about bullying, it shouldn't be normalizing that behaviour. It's so subtle you hardly notice, and that's an issue I think. Especially as the only reason to trip him up seems to be that he is a guy/white/more privileged (not one of the bullies).
I agree but they did it to prove a point about the male athletes (particularly the mascot) and even the guy who plays the mascot was part of Moxie by the end so he was willing to take one for the team
YES! Thank you. It’s not just bullying. It’s assault. The guy broke his arm, and hospital bills in the United States aren’t necessarily what you would call cheap. Not to mention the guy didn’t do anything wrong in the entire movie. He was just a harmless, dorky dude delivering dad jokes and pirate puns. Very inconsistent morality on the movie’s part, especially when assault was mentioned two minutes earlier.

We had a small, Moxie inspired walkout at my school after Roe v Wade was overturned. My grandma brought us all cupcakes and yelled at my principal when he gave us detention. This movie is so relevant right now. Stay strong everyone

great message, executed horribly. personally, i feel like how ‘moxie’ between the first half was totally not educated on anything about feminism. she even told the black woman that she needs to “keep her head down” after the typical stereotypical white jock was messing with her. then, she finds her moms leather jacket and all of a sudden she knows everything about being a feminist.
It definitely had some flaws, but I don’t think she was ever supposed to me an expert on feminism, I just think her finding all her moms old stuff was what inspired her to actually start caring about the issues. And the scene with Lucy was to show character growth, how in the beginning of the movie she didn’t really understand why the shit the guys were doing was wrong and how she grew to actually understand it and care about it
after watching a few movie reviews i do understand why this wasn’t executed as well as it could have, seeing as they chose the typical cishet white protagonist. however, i did really, really enjoy the message and the content in the movie, and i’m starting to think that maybe the protagonists play was to show their growth in understanding other races and identities. kind of a play on “you don’t need to be a minority to stand up for them” but idk she was still kinda meh even though i appreciate the character development

While I agree that this movie could have been executed better, I think she was a feminist all along she just didnt do anything but finding her mom’s old stuff inspired her. It’s kinda like how when watching something powerful you feel motivated to do all sorts of things like they did or how you would feel motivated to clean after watching someone else do it.
I don't think the movie is about anybody being an expert on femenism it's about finding your voice. This about them figuring out how to change things as 16 and 17 year olds. No one in there is perfect which makes it more realistic

I 100% agree w this movie. I used to go out w friends a lot and get harassed. Guys would call me out, touch me weirdly, make rude comments and some would just stare... I hated it but everything someone would ask I would say it didn't matter bc I didn't want to be "sensitive" or make someone feel uncomfortable bc I feel uncomfortable. But mostly, I just figured no one would do anything to help me bc everyone just spoke about the issue but no one really stood up for me. I still feel that way. I love this movie sm. GO GIRLS!!

I've seen so many hate on this movie and as a someone who hates majority of modern feminist movies, because they portray us feminists as just toxic masculine women who hates men and are more damaging than actually helping, I was afraid this movie would be the same. But this movie doesn't go that way, this movie knows what's character development. This movie doesn't actually portray all women as oppressed and all men as the oppressors. You can see both women that are part of the problem and men that are contributing to the cause. Yes, there were some questionable moments, yes, there were some parts that could have been implemented better, especially when it comes to issues unique for women of colour and trans women, but for the majority of time, this movie is actually relatable! Unlike other modern feminist movies, I could find real life example of basically everything in that movie that either happened to me or one of my close friends. I've come to hate watch and am coming out with hope there would be more movies like this in the future.

But to give you an example; a lot of the time women can’t go outside after dark. Or if we do, we need to carry around something to defend ourselves. As far as I know, getting attacked/taken in the dark is much less of a worry for men, at least to the point where they don’t have to carry around pepper spray whenever they take a walk at midnight.
