DEVO - 10/27/1988 - Berkeley, CA

- Standard early Total Devo concert. Sixth show on that tour.
Starts off with Jerry and a man with strange hair bickering about soundchecks (I think). He complains to the cameraman about Enigma Records, then goes and complains to a bench, on which are seated Mark, Bob 1, and Mark's then-wife Nancye Ferguson. David Kendrick is leaning against the stage, not paying a bit of attention. More pre-concert bullshit happens, and then the show starts.
There's also a huge Israeli flag hanging in somebody's dorm window. No idea.
Two-camera mix.
Jocko Homo (acoustic) (04:42)
It Doesn't Matter To Me (08:26)
There's a cut here where Going Under should be - although if I had to guess they actually didn't perform it, since Mark doesn't have the keyboard on his lap after the cut.
Working In A Coal Mine (10:51)
Happy Guy (15:20)
That's Good (18:45)
Jerkin' Back 'n' Forth (22:19)
Girl U Want (25:23)
Whip It (28:16)
Baby Doll (31:14)
[I Can't Get No] Satisfaction (35:27)
Uncontrollable Urge (39:03)
Gut Feeling (42:30)
Gates of Steel (45:53)
Booji Boy's Beautiful World (50:44)
In case anyone was wondering, Mark says "baby" 50 times in a row during Satisfaction. Normally he says it 34 times.
Glad that someone is keeping count... Could be useful later...
So you gain like on a 12 or so
I was there! I cut high school in Alameda that day and took the bus to see Devo that day. Got there early enough to be in the front rom and I have spied myself in this video clip at various times. Amazing to see it again so many years later!
I lived in Berkeley at this time and missed this altogether. DAMN.
Awesome story Proto. Are you wearing the red bandana?
@@veltonmeade1057 nah, just a long haired teenager.
No shame In skipping classes. You learned more from them.
Proto I’m envious of you what and adventure you had, such a great set the band had they are so badass
I can't believe there's a video of this! I had an Italian class in Dwinelle at the same time the concert was starting and we could hear the music from the classroom and finally the professor let us out early. Friend is visiting campus today with his kids and made me think to look for this.
total devo is so fukcing underrated. gotta be one of my favorites.
it's fucking awesome, i just got it on vinyl
@@sircheese6557 same omg
I was randomly thinking about this show, so I searched and was shook to find it! I was there, it was senior year for me, I happened to be studying in the student union. Best concert ever (unexpected, awesome and free) 🐻💙💛
1988 was an AWESOME year!!! Never be another decade like the 80s sadly. So lucky to been able to enjoy the 80s.
The 80’s were the beginning of the end. Still better than the current era, though - that’s a given
I wish I’d seen Devo in this era. Saw them many times before and after. I’d love to see some Total Devo live - I love that album.
That was one of the two tours of Devo I witnessed!
I was there! Couldn’t believe they were playing at lunch in Lower Sproul.
Amazing footage from the 80s Devo era. Cool crowd taking it all in. Fun set list too. Love the version of Baby Doll with scratchy lead guitar intro.
this was back when college didn't suck!
the University of California UC system definitely puts the UC in sUCk.
in 2013, Janet Napolitano became the president of the UC system, and held ICE raids on multiple campuses targetting all of the illegal immigrant workers who were on the UC payroll working as staff on campus. Suddenly there were no maintenance or janitorial staff, and students in the overcrowded dorms were living in poor and unsanitary conditions. Undocumented students in campus housing feared deportation. There were massive student protests at berkeley and santa cruz that were handled violently by the CSO's and police. The UC system hired a pr company to scrub reports of the protests from the internet by flooding it with fake positive articles that would come up if anyone used search terms that would lead to information about the protests. And this time, it worked and the story stayed burried.
It's weird, for the past week I just decided to check out more Devo on UA-cam, And I Have Been Having a Great Time!!!
My buddy and I snuck backstage at this show, got some caramello bars and a pair of tennis shoes! Wish I would have kept them, BOB 1 signed our mercyful fate cassette
Wow 😳, You had A Mercyful Fate Cassette, Do You Still Have It, Is It For Sale?!
That hilarious .I ran into Eastbay Ray at an iron maiden show and he signed my maiden Japan e.p.
God damn that version of Gut Feeling is ferocious. Incredible band
I love the guitar-focused Baby Doll.
Fascinating gig ... the acoustic stuff is great!
This is freaking great!!
Done these gigs where everything is fucked - if you're a REAL musician, like these guys are, you preserver.
This is a real treasure. Thanks for sharing
GREAT UPLOAD! THANK YOU!
Thank you 🙏 so much for uploading this gem 💎 how cool this would have been for the students right,I’m so envious.these guys are so legendary and important in music
Thanks for sharing this... I’m very grateful!
A masterclass in musicianship. Simply DEVO.
I was at the College Of Alameda, had a buddy there with me and we bounced and picked up a buddy that was still at Skyline High and broke him out of class, and made it to UCB just in time to see them go on!
Kind of reminds of the first time I saw Skinny Puppy Live. My ride mostly listened to Hank Williams Jr. And Mettalica. We were underage and snuck bottles of liquor in. But they Were Not Prepared for the Musical Onslaught of Skinny Puppy, Hahahahahahahaha 😂!!!
i love to see them working together. The group as a whole is a sight to behold. Whatever venue. They're not the same apart from each other. RIP BOB2.
I always remember the day I bought Now It Can Be Told.
I had been out the night before and had some time out for fun 😉.
I was Glasgow city centre and went into a Virgin Megastore,I spotted it and bought it.
I didn't know it existed,no Internet etc back then!.
When I heard Jocko Homo I thought WTF and didn't like it.The more I played it, I loved the album....I used to play it regularly, haven't for awhile, but I'll rectify thar soon.
Great footage 👏 👍
Awesome! Thanks a lot for posting this, Maya! That's me at 0:50, the first one there (with the dark jacket). I blew off classes for this and showed up early to get front row! Great concert!!
Uno de mis grupos preferidos... Grande DEVO!!!
still ahead of their time. I was there.
I was there as well. Front row! I actually found myself several times in this video
saw them in Chicago on this tour and when they opened with jocko homo acoustic we were blown away. Great show, can't say I have seen devo do a bad show.
DEVO unplugged saw this in San Diego it was great of coourse
Awesome!!! Thank you!
Can we take a second to appreciate the 80s look at the beginning before in costume and also on stage , it's so 80s. Marks hair has its own fan base, I'm sure.
Love DEVO, REAL MUSIC
This was the first concert I ever attended
thanks of uploading. Wonderful
I was there
Most interesting band ever
Almost like a dress rehearsal for their legendary LA show
Amazing Talent
Posting just to say mark turned his pants pockets out for most of this show. Fun fact!
Before Unplugged made this cool.
I fucking love Gerald Casale.
NUNCA A VISTO ESTE CONCIERTO BUENO MUY BUENO Y NATURAL ESTO ES MUSICA.-
Great dress rehearsal, but really shows how LIGHTING in an indoor venue is important for dramatic impact
I've always wondered what Bob II's rig set up was.
Semplicemente geniali
I was there. I remember it was announced on KQAK "The Quake".
I wonder why they didn't play 'somewhere with devo'
How did you find this video?
My birthday. It was amazing show
Fucking Wow!
Devo is fuckin great.
Los primeros temas totalmente "Unplugged" digno de un capítulo de MTV. Buenísima versión.
wow!
Woooooo hoooooo 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Your right about Going Under because checking the Devo Live Guide huboon.com/ 1988 part of it you see for this show there is no going under.
are you sure? seems like devo themselves were going under.
1:05 is that Toni Basil?
Description above says "Mark's then-wife Nancye Ferguson", but I had the same thought initially.
I thought that I heard someone scream The Art of Noise at the beginning, The Art of Noise is Amazing!!!
I was there. I was a Cal student, class of 1990. Lower Sproul Plaza, I didn't know in advance that they were playing, I just stumbled upon it randomly.
Nice surprise right
Grandioso
Not exactly the Greek Theater.
Back when Berkeley was Total Devo not Total Woke
Amen brother . I was a little metal head from Oakland & I still refer to Berkeley as my backyard patronizing all the great stores before , during & after the new wave times . i still have freedom of choice & are we not men on vinyl w/ $2.50 price tags from rasputins used section . Devo-lution happens .
Back when Cancel Culture was a band that played between the sets of the Style Council and the Tom Tom Club.
The first time DEVO played in the Bay Area there was a big picture of them in costume and in formation descending the steps off an airplane.
I love Devo LIVE better than their albums.
The songs have more punch live, I agree saw this tour and the 1980 tour great stuff.
Devo LIVE
First time I've seen the L6-S used for Satisfaction...
I went to Berkeley. Those buildings are not dorms, those are student union buildings behind the stage and to the left of the stage. So, the Israeli flag is likely a student club or organization.
And this proves it
Bungo Boy will live forever.
Bob 1 even makes an energy dome hat look cool!
Bob 1 also makes any guitar much cooler!
Peter Paul and Mary...Devo
I love how they play 0 songs from the album that their clothing is promoting. They really hated enigma records huh.
That is not exactly true- Happy Guy starts at 15:00. That track is from that TD Album Tour. Saw them twice that year!
Both "Happy Guy" and "Baby Doll" are from Total Devo and are in this set.
They only really did one other Total Devo song on this tour though: "Disco Dancer" as part of the "Somewhere With Devo" suite, which isn't in here. I guess it's just a shorter set.
As a sound guy, hearing "Turn it up!" from the crowd pisses me the hell off. If the mains aren't as loud as they should be, we know and we're working on it. Shut the hell up, screaming like an angry chimp won't change a thing.
Foster the people!!
The Evil Clowns
The baby singing beautiful world is horrible.
That’s Mark Mothersbaugh as Booji Boy he has was in the Beautiful World video too (but Gerry Casals handled the vocals for that song).
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booji_Boy
What The FCKU Is This SHTI Supposed To Be ?????
It IS Devo
We are all Devo
We must repeat!
If you don’t understand it-It’s not meant for you. Go find some people insignificant pop / rap / crap that applies to you !
Obviously not with the Program
What a group of lames
Don't be so hard on yourself and your friends, lame-o-tron
@Bill Cornwell oh I say he can go ahead and be pretty hard on
Dirk looked in the mirror.
you uncultured swine
