I played it all the time like a few months ago and it's still active but your pretty much going to get in the same game with the same players. But most players are pretty chill.
So, some context for those who don´t really know by now. The game had a really big change when the 1.0 update came to the game, changing everything and creating the class system with the jetpack and drone and stuff. And the game really suffered because of that, mostly because the jetpack was the better option between the other two cause of the better mobility it gave to the one using it. But before all that, the game really was centered around customizing and playing the way you really wanted, and thanks to that players started to find new ways of playing (Tele-Axe, Trip Wire + Wooden Box) and you can even kill someone with a snow ball (And you can react to it by hitting it and trowing it back against the one who throw it. So yeah, the video really only speaks scratching only the top of all the game history and leaving lots of stuff that kinda were the real stuff that throw everything to the garbage at the end. The price thing was only a first problem, but eventually lots of other stuff were the thing that drive everyone to leave.
@@syarifht5929 Yeah, the game kinda suffered because of the developers didn´t really know how to balance some stuff. Lots of people were asking for changes in the W + M1 strategy, or the Tele-Axe (It was removed with a patch wich wasn´t really a good idea at the end), and other stuff that also happen were: -No big changes in the game -The new electronics powers were useless (There was one that literally make you ultra small, it was useless AF because it make you do so little damage, like 50 per hit.) -The price tag that eventually was removed (This is when I started to play the game).
Yeah, I played with 2 friends recently doing 1v1's with 1 person as the announcer. The game was still fun, but the class system just felt worse than the old system. I can understand why a change like that would kill the game.
the 1.0 update really killed my enjoyment of the game, the removal of a lot of customization really turned me off as that was the reason I loved the game so much.
I second this, started playing because of a friend around the time it went free. The 1.0 "class system" rework absolutely ruined the game for me, have not played it since 1.0 released. I hope someone creates a pre-release private server when the game finally shutters it's doors
One of the few, if not the only BR that fully clicked with me the first time I played it. I loved this game so much and really wish it caught mainstream success because with an audience and large streamers playing this game could've been one of the best.
Disagree. Or at the very least really needed an option to play without it. I absolutely hated the show director. Having an annoying announcer that can directly influence my match because I don't give two squats about them really got annoying fast.
@@midwestbox Also, as a person who played a lot as a director i developed a tactic based on ingame tile locking logic + tile locking cards, nukes and lava fields to destroy people so games was ending really fast and it felt kinda bad
I am surprised that they didn't talk about the beta version that didn't have the Jetpacks, Grapple Hooks, and Drones. It was so much better before they added that stuff, also the loadouts were highly customizable letting you determine what bonuses you got for your equipment when you built/upgraded them, what utility items and high tech gadgets you wanted to craft.
The commend I was looking for! I think thats the update that really killed the game. It ruined the game for the small dedicated player base who acutually reallly enjoyed the game (like me). They should have focused on expending the ability to customize your loadout instead, honesly.. If that update didn't happen the game would still have a few hundred active players or even a few thousand I think.
Had so much fun in this game. Was a top OCE player. I think something that made the game fail is that how hard it is to beat a good player in this game. In games like Warzone, you can get the drop on a better player because of the low Time-to-kill. In a game like Darwin, even if you get a free hit on a better player, you're not going to survive the ensuing 1-4 minute fight. Ultimately, this frustrates new and low-skill players, ending up with the game not being able to grow at a sustainable pace.
Same with naraka Im realizing. I love naraka but the fighting battle royale genre is immensely ruined by the skill gap…. It will forever keep these styles of games “niche” because they’re not as simple and casual to start playing :(

Gigantic a game I fell in love with and the only other game besides gears of war I truly spent hours on it and when they shut down I couldn't help but feel sad. It was a free game that made little to no money coming in and it failed do to lack of funds. They also released it when OW was closing in which that game killed Battlerite.
The Melee fight system in Darwin was unlike any other combat I've ever experienced in BR. It was so fun to fight against an evenly matched opponent, dodging, rolling, TPing, gliding, freezing, god I miss it so much
Finally someone covered this game. It was really one of the best experiences I've had with BR in terms of pure fun, and always wished it had gotten more attention.

8:30 Darwin actually went came out to early access in March 2018 to the public and went free to play in April 2018 for PC around the time they held the big streamer invitational with shroud and forsen and a few others, which is what the huge spike in activity was, it did take until july 2018 though for it to go free to play on xbox though, they seemed to realise pretty quickly charging for the game was a no go. Video is put together well though and it definitely covers some of the issues the overall concept had, I put 4k hours into the game and casted alot of their tournaments, but admittedly a good half of that time was during a rough period of low activity that ran into community based tournaments and alike to keep people interested and alot of scrims, but release was when it became impossible to find a game, some regions like sydney and US west never truly thrived either which was a shame so west players eventually found themselves forced onto east to play. Many bigger streamers that enjoyed it wanted to wait out full release but with activity dipping they made some big changes that put many off when they did finally return to see how it turned out and many just didn't even know it fully released in januar 2020 until it ws too late as development shut down only 3 months later in may just after lockdowns started where the company is Also the 10 player vs 100 player thing too, as much as darwin games where supposed to be fast paced over quickly they sometimes ran into 30mins plus, tournaments especially many would wait out sudden death to a sometimes 10 man fight, people running away and then the chaser getting vultured was common with the radar system, alot of small things that unfortunately was the undoing of the general concept, quick smaller games. But the chat interactions and voting and betting system they had was great for streaming I have to admit, I'm still waiting too see another game that truly manages to pull out as much interaction for viewers aswell as the players as darwin managed, seeing people hyped in tournaments that 5k people bet darwin currency on them from various peoples streams watching them gave some rounds alot of energy and entertainment. Hopefully some day another game manages the same or darwin gets the overhaul it deserved.
I absolutely loved this game and thought an actual competitive scene would have been really interesting. I'm my opinion having the chat and viewers fully being able to influence the game was fun but not only that in a competitive setting it would mean players would not only to have been good in game but, outside too, by doing this gaining favourites outside would grant in game advantages too from chat.
this game used to be so good, I bought it when it was paid access, towards the end of its life lobbies consisted of the same players so you would end up making good conversations.
Darwin Project is still, to this day, my favorite Battle Royale game of all time. I really wish indie multiplayer games succeeded more often, feels like all of the ones I fall in love with end up getting shut down soon after. Darwin Project, Gigantic, they all fall to other titles for reasons that are sometimes just out of the control of the devs. Now granted, I didn't even know the game had a price until I watched this video, but I never paid for it, and it seemed like it was relatively active when I was playing. Ah well. You really do hate to see it.
@@KC_50 Homie I have 800+ hours in Apex, that game is in one of the worst states it has ever been, broken legends and garbage maps in rotation for the majority of the time, and more audio issues than players in a lobby. I hope Apex can turn it around because at it's peak I adore it, but as it stands I really do not enjoy Apex.
As someone who loathed the br genre, this game in its beta days were amazing. Sure, the gane director xould take favorites and do their best to guarantee a one sided win, but the combat's back and forth with its mobility, dodging, tp, parrying, whacking arrows out of the air, etc, felt so unique and there was always counterplay against better geared players. One of the saddest fates of a multiplayer game.
I used to love and grind the hell out of this game. Darwin Project was just something different and special to me that I could never find in Fortnite or Apex. I hope it will make a comeback sometime but for R.I.P Darwin Project.
i actually "played" the game when it went free to play. Played is in parenthesis cause i mostly was the show director and it was such a unique experience. You could talk to the different teams punish them reward them. Well it was so much fun while it lasted.
Shame this died, the simplicity was so good but they tried to pull it in too many directions. The director never added much (and made it harder to get matches) and these classes didn't even exist when I played! They had a really great combat system with the axe and arrow attacks only, and some really fast mobility on top of that with bounce pads and the like. But seems they didn't know what they wanted and tried doing anything they could to keep their declining playercount.
I loved being the show director XD I used to make people so pissed off, while also making sure that the fight was super even, I'd check the players, see the player with the least ammount of supplies, and lead them to a cashe to help them catch up. And if a player was too far ahead, I'd sprinkle just a bit of chaos onto them. Gravity, speed, leading them to another player, only to make that player invincible, etc. and if I ever saw a person hiding, I'd just nuke that zone. It was so fun. XD
Personally the launch update where they added the 3 classes killed the game it was way more fun where everyone wasn’t flying around where you could hit them at all on the ground
I used to absolutely love this game and grinded it everyday against the top players, I kinda stopped due to the class update cause i missed my old stuff, honestly its a fun game tho
I remember being super excited when I heard about this game when announced, then never heard from it again until now when it's too late. I would have loved to play something like this
I remember playing it when it was already dead. It took me 10 minutes to get in a lobby and another 10 to only ONE player to join that lobby. Then we were talking for about 5 minutes until the game started just with two people. The game was fun and it really felt like you could enjoy playing in your own way. Sad the game died so fast
I remember finding it and playing it so much with my friend back in 2018. It was such a fun, interesting, and unique game that we bonded over. So many great memories, it’s such a shame how it fell.
I played Darwin from very early on, and despite hating most BR games I really enjoyed it. Many of the games choices, such as the smaller player count, hunting/tracking, and crafting instead of random loot drops gave it a more tactical feel. Every choice you made, where to go, what resources to gather, what to craft, how you used the weather all of it mattered. I loved this game until its low player count caused the devs to push it in a more typical BR direction. It went from players suriving to being some weird scifi showdown that relied way too much on the flash tech upgrades. I get why they did it but I still wish they had leaned more into the low tech survival side. I wanted more hand made weapons like the bows and ax. More tracking, hunting, and hiding options. Maybe a desert map that flipped the hot cold mechanic or a jungle map that played with some other weather effect. There was so much they could have done with the original concept it was a shame.
This is one of my fav games. I got it for free on ps4 on release and the only complaint i had was 10 players, i would like to have a few more like 25. It really made me sad that people stopped playing over time
This game was really unique for the gameplay because it stood out from all the BR games out there. Having a Show Director was a unique concept that really worked as well.
Man I missed this game. It was really a battle royal that made planning and stealth important. Really made it a actual battle royal. Shame that it died tho. Will miss this game
HOoooly! I was wondering if there will be any video about this small GEM. Used to love to both play and stream it. So sad that this game hasn't gone forward.
I have very fond memories of this game i have about 100 clocked into the game before it got shut down. this game was so much fun, in my heart this BR was the best hands down
Holy shit boys I never thought I’d hear about Darwin project again, legit met a lifelong friend through this game, it was such a fun game I’ll never forget. My favorite strat was trip-wiring someone into a cage to cage box them. Absolutely toxic start but so fun
The Devs killed this game- the community was tight and active more than can be expressed but in their own discord server the devs were just assholes and it made me and the rest I knew leave only to come back later to an abandoned half dead game- saying it was fun is such an understatement though, it's rly tragic :/
Something about Darwin Project some new players don't understand is that getting materials is just as fun as fighting in a battle and winning. Whether you lose or not (especially in the full release) doesn't matter, you don't feel like you wasted time because you get into an upgrade pattern, so it's not pointless to gather materials just to die because people automate it by getting into a loop/pattern. It's also a social and local feeling game that is arguably the most fun game to play online in 2022.
They had 3 years but never tried to listen to what the player wants. That's how you make a failing game. Instead of becoming one of a kind artist it's just way better to be the engineer who listen to their customer's need.
The death of this game shows just how broken, toxic, and predatory the free-to-play model is. The only price tag that any video game should ever have on it is the one for buying it up-front, but your average person is so brainwashed into the supposed virtues of free-to-play that they choose it instead, kind of like a person who stays in a relationship with their abusive partner because the gaslighting and manipulation they suffer is all they know and they've been tricked into thinking it's a good thing.
I actually Beta tested this game on Xbox. It was very cool to be able to queue with my friends and fight each other. At first I was really bad but once I figured out a game plan and what I liked to use in the game I was able to utilize stealth and trapping very well in order to win many games. Unfortunately like described in the video there just wasn’t much satisfaction after about a week of playing and my friends and I dropped the game and went back to playing Smite.
Competitive Darwin Project was a blast, i started taking the game more seriously back in 2020 and it was so absolutely satisfying. It's so sad that people never really got into it, as the entertainment of these more skilled fights paired with the viewer interaction would have made the game insanely good.
I was their when it first came out an I must say everything about its concept is worth doing again people will love it am still pissed no one has tried it again
Oh man, i really liked this game. I used to always play director, running into the same few people over and over again felt great. Too bad we're probably never gonna see something like this again.
I was a show director for A LOT of time, was my first intro In the streamer world. And what actually kill the game is... The game itself. Combat was rewarding; but not FUN, how i know? Easy, late game is a mess. 6/10 people in a small ring is a vertical fight when people fly like no gravity the moment you hit with an axe. Also some players get salty the moment you touch the situation, even in tournaments when audience can decide fate of a player. Not even talking how tracking it was SO FREE...
For those who dont know this game has a huge learning curve thats what makes this game cool to me because you have to be smart and take time learning the game mechanics thats One of the main problems people stop playing in the 1st place is because most people just want a easy game instead of something challenging and skillful
I’ll be honest. Me and a homie played the game A LOT when they had Duos. And even would get into a party with our two other friends to do a sort of Co-Op survival in the Battle Royale. We stopped playing when the Jetpack came out cuz it really messed with the flow of the game. Hell, the implementation of the heat factor- where instead of snow the players would be put in a tropical area randomly- was absolutely not a bad change compared to it. And not to mention that they seemed to have gotten rid of duos around that time, so the game was just for pure solo. And that killed the game for me and my friends. I honestly just hope the devs can bring back the OG style soon or something.
7:12 biggest reason i never really got into br games. it’s more than likely that whoever initiated the fight is going to win, especially if they’re equal or have a higher skill level then you. having to be on guard with such i high amount of players in most games just feels tedious and kinda boring. sucks that the only br that caught is dead is dead before i could even try it
Ngl you missed a lot of points, the game actually died because the community was split, because the beta version was like a completely different game, and full release is the version you’re talking about, and people would quit because of it, and the new players liked it but the old players stayed in customs to play the old version, and because of this the new players had long wait times and eventually the new players quit to
Dude this game was so much better than other Battle Royale, like getting different effects on each zone and having a guy control zone, I hope this video blows up and it gets one more chance!
it was tough. i think that this game had so much potential and the release ultimately made all the old players quit and not want to return as it was such a different vibe and feel. it’s hard to take in and hopefully this game will be carried on and made better in the future, but for now you can only remember how it really was in its prime
i only played this game in the very beginning but just gotta say i absolutely loved the proximity chat and thought that just that alone made the game worth it because of the interactions i had with it
This is exactly the kind of Battle Royale I’ve been wanting to play, and the first time I hear about it it’s already dead.

Now granted, I didn't even know the game had a price until I watched this video, but I never paid for it, and it seemed like it was relatively active when I was playing. Ah well. You really do hate to see it.
Just play Apex which is infinitely better… best BR out
@@KC_50 Homie I have 800+ hours in Apex, that game is in one of the worst states it has ever been, broken legends and garbage maps in rotation for the majority of the time, and more audio issues than players in a lobby. I hope Apex can turn it around because at it's peak I adore it, but as it stands I really do not enjoy Apex.
me too it was free though, I got it from 2018
As someone who loathed the br genre, this game in its beta days were amazing.
Still worth checking out. Being able to talk to opponents is my favorite thing. Wish more games did it.
XD
I miss this game. playing it back when it came out and when the 1.0 update made me feel good
Darwin project had no one shot, there was no 1 cheap shot from behind and your dead kind of thing.
Don’t forget to mention proximity chat in the game. It was so much fun hearing people trash talk in the game
Played this and Hyper Scape on the xbox. Player base consisted of the most cracked gamers.
Personally the launch update where they added the 3 classes killed the game it was way more fun where everyone wasn’t flying around where you could hit them at all on the ground
This was a really fun game but it always felt incomplete
Oh the memories... The fun I had with the little fame I gained from having an actual, fleshed-out character in the director role.. That was great.
I played this a couple years ago and the community is nothing but wholesome!
Man I loved Darwin Project so much. The Host role was some of the best times i've had in any game.
I used to absolutely love this game and grinded it everyday against the top players, I kinda stopped due to the class update cause i missed my old stuff, honestly its a fun game tho
Bro legit you just read my mind
I played Darwin for a long time, such a shame to see it go, it had real potential
darwin project: im back!😈
I remember being super excited when I heard about this game when announced, then never heard from it again until now when it's too late.
I wish it was more popular, although i didnt get much time in it, the time i spent is what i enjoyed.
so great memories, in the late stages all players knew each other and it felt so family like
I still think of this game. I still have funny memories of being the host and flying around
I remember finding it and playing it so much with my friend back in 2018. It was such a fun, interesting, and unique game that we bonded over. So many great memories, it’s such a shame how it fell.
THIS GAME WAS SO GOOD I PLAYED IN THE FIRST TWO TOURNAMENTS
Honestly it feels great being the show director and it’s a shame there aren’t more games where you control how the match goes
This game was amazing, I remember plenty of the community members of this game. Will never forget it, loved all my time in this game
How shit bro I used to do that to I was insane at this game I miss it so much ☹️
The Devs killed this game- the community was tight and active more than can be expressed but in their own discord server the devs were just assholes and it made me and the rest I knew leave only to come back later to an abandoned half dead game- saying it was fun is such an understatement though, it's rly tragic :/
I miss this game
Man the memories
Damn it’s sad ppl
Didn’t get to play this I honestly thought it was really fun and playing the announcer was a cool twist
It's a shame this game died, when I played it (including the stream participation) and it was really damn good, with it did well
The death of this game shows just how broken, toxic, and predatory the free-to-play model is.
The main reason for this game dying is the developers didn’t listen to the community.
Loved when it was alive all the big players knew each other, so lovely
this game was fucking amazing. the small player sized still clicked because of 12 man matches and the director, repeating who the director is was fun
I loved this game, really really fun but good things don't last
Competitive Darwin Project was a blast, i started taking the game more seriously back in 2020 and it was so absolutely satisfying. It's so sad that people never really got into it, as the entertainment of these more skilled fights paired with the viewer interaction would have made the game insanely good.
I was their when it first came out an I must say everything about its concept is worth doing again people will love it am still pissed no one has tried it again
Dude this game was so fire. I miss the lobbies bro they were always funny as shit
Not even talking how tracking it was SO FREE...
that's every BR. but ok.
@@Mark-ps7eh None of his points apply to any other BR right now...
@@Jacksaur_ oh, so you're saying other BR's dont have a lot of people in the ending circle camping? Ah, ok, you're right Jack. Lol moron.
@@Mark-ps7eh I’m not a big battle royal fan, but this reply genuinely makes no sense.
@@ThatSkiFreak For a small minded individual it shouldn't, so i dont blame you.
I remember playing this when it was popping, I really wish this game never died.
I played this game so much in beta but it basically died to me after the full release.
7:12 biggest reason i never really got into br games. it’s more than likely that whoever initiated the fight is going to win, especially if they’re equal or have a higher skill level then you. having to be on guard with such i high amount of players in most games just feels tedious and kinda boring. sucks that the only br that caught is dead is dead before i could even try it
this game didn't need to die, was such a good time
Ngl you missed a lot of points, the game actually died because the community was split, because the beta version was like a completely different game, and full release is the version you’re talking about, and people would quit because of it, and the new players liked it but the old players stayed in customs to play the old version, and because of this the new players had long wait times and eventually the new players quit to
The Fact that after the Beta ended, that every Beta Player was given Access to the Full game was huge
Dude this game was so much better than other Battle Royale, like getting different effects on each zone and having a guy control zone, I hope this video blows up and it gets one more chance!
i used to be a top 10% in darwin I miss the game so much and if I could I would make it again not careing about it just like a bo3 mod type thing
The concept of spectator interaction sounds interesting, but the slow paced gameplay combined with a price tag is understandable why the game failed.
it was tough. i think that this game had so much potential and the release ultimately made all the old players quit and not want to return as it was such a different vibe and feel. it’s hard to take in and hopefully this game will be carried on and made better in the future, but for now you can only remember how it really was in its prime
i only played this game in the very beginning but just gotta say i absolutely loved the proximity chat and thought that just that alone made the game worth it because of the interactions i had with it
Brooooo sameeeee
