Confusion over Wexford Town Street Names, Ireland 1971

- Although many streets in Wexford were renamed after participants in the Easter Rising, local people continue to refer to the original names.
Following a plebiscite in 1932, Wexford Council changed the town’s street names to honour those who took part in the Easter Rising of 1916. However, locals still use the original street names and are often unaware of the new ones.
Frank Hall visits Wexford to investigate whether its citizens are familiar with the official street names or if they are still using the old names.He asks a number of people for directions and discovers that many of them are unfamiliar with James Connolly Street but can all point him in the direction of William Street.
A guide for the Old Wexford Society Sammy Coe explains the meaning behind the name Keyser Lane, the second oldest street in Wexford and the only one to escape renaming. He agrees the dual naming is confusing for tourists to Wexford. The street plates have new names but the old names are still in the guide books and maps of the town.
I’m sure the Rising generation will eventually come around to the new name.
Some of the new names have caught on however, and Pearse Street is no longer referred to as Talbot Street. Wexford Corporation solely uses the new names in all official correspondence and fortunately for all, the Post Office is familiar with both versions.

Frank Hall had such a lovely manner. I remember as a child listening to the music from "Hall's Pictorial Weekly" and groaning inside as it was waffle. But I would appreciate it now.☘️🧚♂️
I got to see the side entrance to Simon's Place. I miss the Tower, West gate, Archers, Sailing Cot, Tim's Tavern and many others.

Though it seemed depressingly fusty to me as a kid, I love that old Gaelic script (as seen on the street signs) now, even though I think the decision taken back in the '60's(?) to do away with it for official use was the correct one. Sadly, when you see people try to reproduce that style of lettering today, for example on New York 'Irish' pubs with names like the 'Erin go Bragh', [ EDIT: or fans of '80's Synthpop will be familiar with its jarring use on several of the famous 'Prophet' series of synthesisers,] such examples are almost invariably eye - wateringly cheesy and 'plastic' looking, for some reason...
While the explanation of the origin of the name "Keyser's Lane", as ferretted out by Dr George Haddon (from no less a personage than the King of Norway himself!) and related in the clip by Sammy Coe is quite accurate, no doubt, I have a strong suspicion that despite the seemingly laid back attitude of the Wexford locals regarding Republican/’Loyalist' politics, that the reason for the name of the lane surviving the changes affecting the other street names in the town is in no small way related to its similarity with the word Kaiser (which comes through even more strongly in the Gaelic), irrespective of whether any conclusions come to thereby are just 'folk etymology'... Or to put it another way, a case of "My enemy's enemy is my friend"!!
I also have a suspicion, nothing more than speculation, that the seeming ignorance of the nipper at the end about the town's geography may have been because he was a 'Traveller' (inverted comma for the benefit of foreign readers - not a 'backpacker', but kind of like a Gypsy, only 'home grown'.) That he was a little reticent about the fact - if true - would not have been too surprising in the early '70's, sad to say. (Actually, he did even indicate that he wasn't a native of the town, even though Frank Hall seemed to miss the fact!)
i was in wexford in july and the tiny lane Keyser's Lane has a historical plaque on it's entrance...it is literally a tiny ally that goes down to the 'key'...as in the dock the keyside...absolutely nothing to do with the german kaiser.
Not a problem in the era of Google Maps.
Except google maps keeps placing names over the wrong parts of town.
The lady at 1.51 looks very contemporary whilst everyone one else looks like from the 1960's....

I do know what you mean though, the lady in question does look modern. She wouldn't look out of place today (even though that is 52 years ago).

Im 40 and leaving my homeof 40years to live in Wexford. Trying to learn as much local knowledge as possible before we move. Hoping to be moved and settled by this time next yr.
Anybody got any advice such as good areas, rough areas etc for example?

Do you know anything about the primary schools in the town, as in which is good, which to avoid?
Im a country lad myself so could possibly move 10 or 15 mins outside of the town but we'd prefer to be closer to town to be honest.
Do you know anybody working in Wexford general hospital, is it a good place to work? The missus would be hoping to work there.
All Primary schools are very good. Wexford Hospital is a very good place to work. They had a fire recently, but is almost fully functioning. I'll try to send you footage. One of the best places to live. Crime very low. Lots of sunshine, and sandy beaches
