- For this year’s edition in our “Free Software” series, we made the criteria quite simple. The program must be free of cost with the essential features that people want included free of charge. Every type of free software was considered for this video except for those only offering free trials. To weed out the bad, I will show you 10 free programs in a variety of categories that are actually great! All of these can be installed on Windows computers with some also being available for Linux and Mac.

What are your favorite free programs? Due to viewer feedback, in addition to open source, we're now including other types of software including freeware, freemium and others as long as the essential features are included free of cost... Thanks for watching :)
Why don't you make a video with every software and add-on you use all at once?
My favourite is vs code and material theme in it.
I like obs
Sordum Power Run - www.sordum.org/9416/powerrun-v1-3-run-with-highest-privileges/
Drag Everything.exe to Power Run UI, you can open cmd windows, run regedit, drag bat/cmd/reg files to the UI and everything gets Elevated permissions. Very Powerful :).
Sordum and Nirsoft are real goldmines for free and very useful programs, i have no financial or otherwise stake in either, im just a home power user :)
I use NextPVR all the time. It's best if you have a TV card. I use it all the time with a Hauppage card and a remote, although the remote needs a little programming to control the program. It's a media player, but also works as a PVR. It can also be used as a backend for a TV card in programs like Kodi. It's greatest strength is as a PVR. It current runs in Windows but they're developing a Linux version.
You sir are a HERO! This takes me back to the days of PC mags with free CDs that have super cool free apps!
I'd never heard of Everything but it's the most useful thing I've ever heard of! Instead of waiting for my hard drive to find what I need after 2 minutes of searching it literally takes no time at all to find what I want to find. Thank you so so much for that one.
I don't know if Listary is intense but I love it soo much! Way cleaner search functionality!
I mean, doesn't Open-Shell's search feature kinda sorta do the same function?
"The start menu can search for programs, settings, files, email, and other documents.
In the Classic style you can also register custom search programs (like Agent Ransack of Everything) that let you search for files anywhere on your computer. Also you can register search tools like Google and Bing to search the Internet. Read the documentation for instructions and examples."
I've been using Everything for years. This is a program that has evolved into an incredibly powerful tool. I literally use it every day in one way or another - the more you learn about it the more useful it becomes. If you use it often, please don't forget to send a few bucks to the author - he's more than earned it.
I've been using it for years, you can also change the theme to dark mode manually, such a nice app to have.
Yeah, it even finds things in the trash.
Brother I paused this video at every item and downloaded it. I'm always looking for ways to improve productivity. Thanks!
Thanks - ive been using half of the softwares mentioned, for a couple of years. But a few are new to me, really glad to see what else is out there. thanks
I love FastStone image viewer. The default mode is full-screen and the toolbars appear as you hover the mouse near the edges of the screen, so they don't take up screen space when you don't need them. And it has batch convert/rename, resize/resample, editing tools, etc., etc.
A few I like :
1) ScreenPresso - for capturing screenshots and doing various annotations and edits on those
2) KeePass 2 - offline password manager with autotype functionality
3) WinSCP - file transfer program (FTP, SFTP etc)
4) Notepad++ - great text file editor
5) OpenVPN - good VPN client
6) Bitvise - very good telnet/SSH alternative to putty
7) MusicBee - pretty good music player
To be honest, this video was actually probably one of the best "free programs" videos I have ever seen. Quite a few interesting apps, some even new to me. Thank you for your work :-)
I would agree. Most of them are garbage, but this one is actually useful.
Nailed it!
This channel is Awesome! Thank you makers.. .
Gosh! it's so good, everything on point. Best possible and most required descriptions about every app are presented so amazingly.
Good selection. Some more you must include in your next list to let others know:
1: VLC
2: Handbrake
3: LibreOffice
4: Notepad++
5: KeyPass 2
6: Thunderbird
7: Subtitle Edit
8: Bulk rename Utility (renaming multiple files and folders)
9: BlueGriffon (WYSIWYG html editor)
10: Musescore (music notation)
11: Blender
12: Scribus
13: LMMS (digital audio workstation)
Zenik Torres for a more multiplattform Software, Exchange KeePass2 with KeePassXC :)
Heck - just go to Ninite.com and tick the boxes you want.
Vlc all the way 👍
@@JoshuaWilkesR VLC was not able to play a HEVC2 AAC file. It just showed a green screen with audio. Had to download MPC-HC to play the video.
I've been using Pot Player for the past few years and like it more than VLC, I'd recommend people check it out it looks real slick great UI and has great themeing options
This is one great list. Thanks for taking time to put this together.
Excellent video, excellent selection. Thanks for taking the time to explain the programs and as a windows and linux user, I appreciate your choice of software that works on the Linux platform. Thanks for your hard work on this!
I'm grateful for all of your hard work and research to my browsing experience much better!
Great choices and a couple I haven't heard of, now going to give them a try. Thanks!
I absolutely love this resource thank you these videos I absolutely love them! Very professionally done, to the point and above all, awesome, useful info... Much appreciated
Excellent video, I have some but not all of these, now that I know about other free good software I will look into them. Thank you for informing us ....greatly appreciated! = )
EarTrumpet should be on the list. It should become the default way of handling audio and sources on Windows.
Awesome list and recommendation. Thank you for doing this
👌👏👏👏 Thank you! I should be installing some of these!
Thanks for mentioning more than just those who have been around forever and everyone already knows about (like vlc for video and gimp as a photoshop replacement)
Wow! That was really interesting. Thank you very much for sharing this helpful information! 👍
If youre looking for a free alternative to FL Studio or GarageBand, LMMS is great and open source too
Does Reaper meet the criteria for this video?
Rodrigo Veliz reaper is technically not free. It’s kinda like FL demo except you can save. I’m pretty sure you have to pay for full version to use it for commercial use.
nothing beats Cakewalk by bandlab unlimited racks and free plugins!
I meant tracks! Sorry
Hi TechGumbo, I'm so grateful for all the tutorial you been uploading it has helped me a lot, and I want to say a very big thank you, your teaching has helped my young youtube channel a lot, hope to be in torch will you one day. God bless you and have a nice day.
Great stuff! All of these are worth a download. Thanks.
Excellent video, a ten best free were the software is actually free and unrestricted. awesome
Wow Everything was... Everything i ever wanted but didn't know until i installed it !
Since my laptop is quite old and i have 2 external HDs (one is FAT32, which at first didn't show, but adding it in the folders in options it worked!!) this is super fast search!! You are right this should have been installed in Windows 10. It's a lifesaver ! Thnx !! 🤗👍
great list, thank you!
Thank you for hooking us up!
Thank you for your amazing reviews much appreciated
Some free software I use that is imo the best, and has consistently been reared as the best or among the best are:
1) OBS
It’s not just great for streaming, but also recording your PC to make videos. Lots of customization but is t the easiest to learn. There are variants of this that try to dumb it down, the only drawback being they often loose some advanced functionality.
2) DaVinci Resolve
This has been consistently rated as the best free video editing program, and in several rankings even beat out programs that cost as much as $200 US. Very powerful, and actually not terribly difficult to learn. A nice U.I. that makes navigating it easy, and the workflow is easy to understand.
3) Libre office and Open Office
Imo the best free alternatives to Microsoft Office. A little dated in the U.I. But very powerful overall. Both work well and are quite powerful in what they are designed to do.
Good ones. I'd prefer Libre to Open office though, Open Office was discontinued nearly a decade ago.
Libre means free in my country
@Tone. It's always complicated, and the newer versions with newer features will be more complicated
But that's the nature of all NLEs and super complex software like that
Learning it isn't any harder than learning say premiere or olive or final cut, it's just different
You just have to pick it up and commit to learning it like you committed to learning your current NLE and youll naturally get good at it
Spectacular video! Great programs I can use, links and time codes in the description, and a to the point video style. Thanks!
Super helpful video. Found two programs I desperately needed. Thank you!
Blender. The founder is awesome.
Founder doesn't work for money 💰
The fact that Blender is NOT on this list is borderline criminal...
@@oXyacePtylene Blender does not need to be on a list everyone knows all about blender and its awesomeness
Nice arcane spike picture
@@undead504 blender kills my laptop
Thanks it's good to find a channel that helps people as I'm the tech in the family I can now point people here as I'll soon be unable to help them anymore. So yea it's a rare find for a helpful group without their hands out I thought I was alone lol
Very helpful. Thank you!
Since Sketch Pad will save in .bmp, you can use the app to design your own desktop icons.
Windows will use a .bmp file for an icon as well as the standard
.ico icon file.
Cracking Video, really clear, pertinent and useful. Great watching, thank you.
Bravo Gumbo! Great review!
Great video! As usual... Thanks dude!
A lot of these softwares I have tried and quite some I still use it even today.
VSCode is my favourite program I use daily. It's great on its own but it gets even more powerful with extensions.
Same with Thunderbird. I can tweak those programs to a crazy extend and customise everything.
The quality of the extensions for VSCode is excellent, not always for Thunderbird though.
For those wondering Visual Studio Code is not an IDE like Microsoft Visual Studio, it is just a streamlined codeeditor with support for development operations like debugging, task running, and version control. It aims to provide just the tools a developer needs for a quick code-build-debug cycle and leaves more complex workflows to fuller featured IDEs, such asVisual Studio IDE.
It's amazing tool for support. Easy to read the logs, configs. Creating powershell scripts. Running SQL queries etc. Makes life easier.
Thank you very much I was just looking for a software for quick file search thanx man 👍 your video never disappoint me
very useful! I immediately installed a lot of these programs. The revo uninstaller even tells you you which of your 64 bit programs are only 32 bit , even though you downloaded the '64 bit' version.
👏 your videos always helpful. Thank you for consistently maintaining your quality.
Thanks, Everyting is now on my computer and loving it. :-)
Try Listary. It's much simpler and quicker.
@@ilandvash6746 Not for me, Everything so far is the best I have tried
I wasexpecting Blender & Design Spark Mechanical to appear in this list :)
I am using Foxit, Audacity and some other softwares mentioned here since ages and I agree whole heartedly with the prescribed softwares here. Very good video.
Good information and very well done as usual. But then we expect nothing less from TechGumbo!
Amazing collection of software! Of course, there are many more, mostly depending on the user's necessities. For video editing, for instance, Davinci Resolve is almost a must. Together with Audacity and Gimp, you can live without the adobe suite and still make pro work.
Resolve gets good reviews but its system demands are too much for my pc. VSDC Free Video Editor is quite superb, though. I then use DVDSTyler to create chapters and produce / burn the finished DVD where needed.
Ive been using Voidtools Everything for a couple of years now, its fast and leaves explorers own search in the dust. :)
My faves (Windows only):
Comodo Firewall
Comodo Programs Manager
Listary (much like Everything)
Faststone Image Viewer
Speccy (Quick & easy Hardware Info)
Classic Shell (Customise windows & Start Menu)
Microsoft SyncToy (Backup & Sync folders)
Open Shell is the updated Classic Shell
@@Aximili55 Thanks. I'll give it a go.
I'm just starting to go thru video's you've made; very interesting. Hope I find one that recommends a good free screen recording software. Thanx for your vids!
Try OBS ;)
Very good video TechGumbo. Thank you very much.
I use Audacity for my church recording. It's lovely
Just want to highlight a program named Ditto, it's a clipboard manger to keep a history of all the things you copy with many other useful features, I've been using it for years now and it's a really time saver.
Nice, thanks
Thank you very much for this
Da Vinci Resolve and Losslesscut ! Great video editing / merging programs
Nice selection 👍
very Helpful softwares. Thanks
Excellent! Thank you!
Process Explorer, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Autoruns, WinDirStat, CPUZ, GPUZ, HWMonitor, InSpectre, DesktopOK, CCleaner, Notepad++, 7-Zip, Exact Audio Copy, Ultimate Windows Tweaker, DriveStore Explorer, VLC, LAV Filters, PuTTY, NetLimiter, Wireshark, iPerf3,
Great job good video right to the point no fluff thank you
Thanks for the info. Great video. Audacity for me, I've been using that for a long time. I also you Sketchup Make. Do you know of anything free alternative for Sketchup Make?
Excellent Video
Thank you for this very informative video. I have just grabbed Foxit Reader for annotating PDFs (SumatraPDF is a good reader but limited), Everything and Revo Uninstaller Free. Really useful stuff :).
Thanks for the post ~
Really usefull info, bro.
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks bro!
ShareX is a must have. It’s a better snipping tool with adjustable hot keys and gives the option for screen recording. I work in IT and use it every single day.
These are the videos that I watched during lockdown to improve my PC. Best channel for Windows 10 users!
Thanks for sharing ...
Favorite free software is DaVinci Resolve. Best free movie editor. And I say "movie" because it can do more than just edit video; full audio toolbox, color grading, compiling/rendering effects, etc.
Blender and Krita. Both really good. Blender especially. It's knocking on the door of the professional space. Oh, and don't forget chocolatey. There may be a bit of a learning curve with chocolatey, since it is command line based, but it makes it super easy to manage your software and keep it up to date.
Here in Colombia we can get all software programs between 5 and 20 dollars and runs forever I mean don´t expire every year, you don´t need a license, we don´t need to buy a license that is too expensive for colombians that don´t make dollars or euros the minimum wage for colombians is around 300 dollars per month.
I think that:
1) VLC
2) 7-zip
3) GIMP
4) Shotcut
Should be on your list
WinRAR > 7zip
paint.net > gimp
@@osumunbro Fully Agree.
@@osumunbro No way.
@@osumunbro 7zip is better
@@osumunbro winrar is annoying it always reminds you that its not free
This video is very useful. I use some of the tools mentioned here, but most of them are new to me. glad I found it!
btw, can someone suggest good free driver management tools? really confused which to use, IO bit Driver booster or DriverPack Solution...
Thanks for the awesome list! Two I didn't see and definitely recommend:
1) Notepad++
2) 7-zip.
Please tell me this is a joke if so my sides
A real joke: WinRar trying to make you pay
* 2) WinRAR
@@vcokltfre They never tried.
@@raik1766 nOOO!! 7Zip is better and free!!!
Dude after like 3 different weird videos from click farm channels with stupid programs and a computer generated voice, I finally found someone that actually cares about the helpfulness of his content. Thank you!
I watched ads on this vid cause this was amazing, thanks for the upload!!
I like a program called "the file splitter" 1.31.. it's been around a long time but works great if you want to break down bigger files and store on a data dvd, etc.. then when you want use them again, the program puts them back together to original large file.. It don't do folders, but if you convert them with 7zip first it will :o)
VS Code is the absolute killer! Love it!
Awesome sir
"Everything" is a must have !!!! real instant access to EVERYTHING !...
Is superfast!!!
How it is better than Listary?
It is so much all at once. I'm trying to figure out what the heck all the stuff is when i type what i want to search. Shocking how much is downloaded on the drive.
When I was a Windoze user, Geek uninstaller was a fantastic uninstaller application. These days * sudo apt get remove --purge "application name"* on Debian based GNU Linux operating systems is all that I need.
Blender should have been on this list.
It's a beast of a 3d package
Let's see what we can do with blender,
1. 3d animations
2. 2d animations
3. 3d modeling
4. 3d posing
5. video editing
6. drawing things
you are the best TQ!
I just installed Everything & it's 1000 times better than the W10 search function & I agree, it should be Windows default search tool! Sometimes the W10 search won't search my external haed drives, but everything was so quick & gave me multiple locations! Thanks for sharing!
Try Listary.
ArsClip Clipboard Manager
FreeFileSync A File and Folder Sync application that not only can automatically and manually create multiple syncing relationships but can create executable batch files that can be called or scheduled by the OS or other programs.
Playnite A very nice and regularly updated universal launcher for game store launchers and game emulators with a pseudo Steam-Like interface. Much further along than GOG Galaxy 2.0 and completely independant of any store so there are no worries about issues of features an integrations being cut off due to worries about the launcher being put out by a competing storefront.
ConEmu An Open Source project to unify as much of the command line windows with more features in a tabbed UI that is highly customizable including my favourite feature, a Quake-like drop down Terminal Window. It can't grab as many windows in Windows 8 and 10 that it could before, but hopefully it is on the roadmap as I would love to use it to manage some of the game servers I admin.
FileListCreator This makes a text list of files or a filtered subset of files based on what you want output, and boy is it fast and good at what it does. For example I admin several servers that are modded of the game ARK:Survival Evolved. In that game as you advance you get points to spend on the ability to learn how to make new things, like a rifle or a set of SCUBA flippers. These are called "Engrams" and some mods add or modify them. Also they may require you have one or several other previous "Engrams" before you can take it. As an admin you may have to remove or alter one of these engrams, and the game uses the Unreal Engine so every separate is a file, and it name always starts with "EngramEntry". Looking for them using Windows Search, Windows Exploerer, or Everything is a pain. With FileListCreator I simply drag the folder that I know it is in, then tell it to filter by "EngramEntry" and it will show every one in that folder. I then can put them in whatever order I want, tell it to add or remove info on those files, save those settings and any time I have those settings on, any folder I drag onto it will instantly make the list. I then can save that list as a file for later use or cut and paste info straight from the interface.
Belarc should be on this list. Tells you everything about your computer's hardware, (extremely useful if you buy a prebuilt system), about your motherboard, (model #, serial #, Firmware version and date). How much RAM, lists all your drives and manufacturer. Shows if your Windows Update security and Antivirus is up to date. Downloads the newest Windows Defender definitions. Tells you about your what's on your home network, your IP address, etc. Way more info about your computer than you'll ever need, lol.
Many thanks
All of my software is free. I am reluctant to mess up my Windows registry with another program install when there is a portable version available. For that reason most of my software comes via portableapps.com . As a bonus, they provide a downloader and launcher program and it also can update any of the software it downloaded. Very handy! LibreOffice, Notepad++, Password Safe and BabelMap are the portableapps programs I use most. I do use a few programs from other sources: Palemoon browser and AutoHotKey are the most notable. Oh, and I've used ClassicShell ever since Windows 8. I forget that it's not the native start menu.
I suggest looking into CherryTree. It's a great notebook program. It's fantastic for tracking and organizing projects that need hierarchical organization of text files (which you can add rich text formatting, images, and hypertext links to, since they can be seen as HTML), and it's also great for journaling.
> I am reluctant to mess up my Windows registry with another program install when there is a portable version available.
Most portable programs temporarily write to register, if you're lucky they unwrite after closing.
Many thanks.
I totally agree with you that the everything program should be added to Windows as a default it really is a very nice program for finding just about anything.
Useful video
These videos are insanely underrated.
