      Kevin Lightner This pedal is pretty decent if you're going for the classic rock and roll sound. But I prefer my TC Electronic Metal Distortion. Has a more pure sound and less muffled crunch. So if you potentially want a crisp soloing distorted sound with some slight reverb, this may not be the pedal for that. Unless you're not a treble-heavy player (which I am).

    I run this in the fx loop of my Carvin MTS. The Output knob acts as a global master, allowing me to adjust the channel volumes to where they sound best while controlling the overall level. I keep the Distortion knob at minimum, so that it adds a touch of compression to my (already distorted) Lead channel without getting muddy.

    Thanks for putting up this video, you nail a lot of classic rock tones, especially "Man On The Silver Mountain". I think this pedal bridges the gap very well between classic "old school" distortion and "ultra heavy metal" distortion, and you are definitely achieving both, demonstrating it's versatility. But being fair to your other gear, you are getting a lot of help with the hotter pickups you are using. But it's a good thing, the pedal can take higher output pickups, something that the Boss DS1 and pedals like it can't really do to get a decent tone. Also, to me, Mogami cables are the best you can buy, they are tone monsters themselves and "give it all to you", signal wise, they are worth their price and helping in your demo immensely. All this being said, I may just buy this and give it a good workout, because with it's versatility, it should work well with any guitar/amp combination.

    For Bass: Dime the distortion, between 9 and noon for tone, and dime output. Incredible sound. I tried it as a cheap pedal to buy for a friend and ended up buying another to put on my pedalboard

    For $39 new from Guitar Center as of 11-12-16, its not a bad dirt box. Sounds great with a clean amp and adjust the distortion to taste and sounds great with an already driven amp and adjust the distortion to taste. It has a nice biting attack, great for bringing out those harmonics. Think of George Lynch during the Dokken days or Vivian Campbell during the early Dio days, yes great 80s metal lead shredding tone.

      It's also great if you set it on a lower muddy gain setting and slap a tube screamer type boost in front of it.

    Thanks for demoing this with the gain and tone turned down. Some good tones there. I have this and the MXR Classic Distortion. Totally different. The Prime Distortion is MUCH brighter. With the tone turned up you can hear it get thin and extremely trebley.
    The Prime Distortion gets that nice click on the attack of lead notes like you hear on some of Alex Lifeson's and Jimmy Page's solos on classic albums. I think it also is a bit reminiscent of the thin, bright but saturated tone on Van Halen I. Just a bit. The Prime Distortion can even be dialed in to get something like that buzzy lead tone Mike Rutherford got on some of the old Genesis records.

  • @AC-yq2fx

    Output all the way up, Tone between 9-11 and distortion 12 to full gain its the perfect setting. The key here is not to bring Tone up higher than 11. Sound is way too thin, extremely bright and you loose your mid/lows which is the meat of your warm sound. Humble opinion. Great video.

    I find anywhere from the 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock position on the tone is best, I keep distortion at about 3 o'clock and use an od behind it, with minimal gain and half volume, to get a more modern tone a la mastodon. Really good pedal if you want Marshall tones on the cheap and spend the time with your settings on it and your amp.

    Skipping through the video, I didn't notice as much difference as I would have expected from the distortion setting as you started going through its range, start around 5:14. Is the pedal really like that in person? Since you had the output at 100% the whole time, I was wondering if the pedal wasn't overdriving your amp to the point that the differences in the distortion setting weren't getting lost in an already saturated signal. There are other demos that seem to show a little more range.

    • @clockWorks10

      I have this pedal and this demo is not that great because changing the output also changes the type of distortion you get and the tone slightly. He never does so this is not very accurate.

    • @jhkim01
      @jhkim01 8 років тому +3

      I agree with Nick. You have the distortion setting all the way down, and it is way too distorted. If you roll back the output to 12:00 (or less), you get better range. I have this pedal, and is more versatile than your demo illustrates because of the high output setting.

  • @ck2music712
    @ck2music712 4 роки тому +2

    And another thing; With the output just CRANKED, all we're REALLY hearing is YOUR AMP being overdriven... Which would be fine, IF you were reviewing the amp, but with pedal reviews, I THINK people want to hear what the PEDAL sounds like... So, you'd have to turn the output down a little... I heard what you said about "Unity Gain Potentiometers", but I've been playin for almost 30 years, and I don't guess I've ever heard of those...

    • @MarshallGTV
      @MarshallGTV  4 роки тому +2

      The amp I’m using is a clean profile on a Kemper. Regarding the output, it is set slightly over unity gain, which means the volume is just slightly above the volume when the pedal is off. This part tolerance is not exact. It was the first run when I got it so perhaps the quality is not great. Thanks for your comment!

    I have no idea why people like a fuzz tone. Distortion is distorted enough without adding a fuzzy bottom end. Distortion should be tight with good articulation and a cranked powerful sound. With fuzz, It winds up just sounding like mush.

    Hey i think when you say "suck back" wat yer referring to is "sag"

    • @MarshallGTV
      @MarshallGTV  7 років тому

      Julia Speer yes and no. I believe sag refers to lowered voltage across the plates of the power tubes of a valve amp. I’m speaking to the similar phenomenon of this, added to the characteristics of a pushed power transformer and a way too hot signal hitting preamp tubes causing an extreme compression effect. Since this is a pedal and I’m not using a tube amp, I use the phrase ‘suck back’. Also I like ring of it :). Thanks for your comment!

    Pinging the output, you're just overdriving your amp... this doesn't show off any bit of how the pedal itself sounds as it's just your amp's overdriven tone and just muddying up everything. I wish you knew how things worked before you decided to show everyone else that you didn't.

    • @MarshallGTV
      @MarshallGTV  7 років тому +2
