You inspire me brother, I started powerlifting thanks to you. I'm 17 and I just benched 120kg and squatted 160kg at 78kg, appreciate ur videos a lot, always giving top tier advice 👊🏼
I am at the opposite end to you I am closer to 50 than 40 and have lifted for 25 yrs and competed at 120kg BW in the past and love watching these because you never stop learning in the gym, When I started you only had Powerlifting USA magazine for info now you have the best lifters on platforms like this. Great stuff
How did you get custom TYR shoes? Did they sponsored you, or you reached out to TYR to make you a custom design? Great quality video by the way. The editing and shots are looking really good in your latest videos.
I haven’t pulled much on deadlift bars because i mostly compete in USAPL but that cerebus bar looks like a thin stiff-bar compared to the kabuki or Texas deadlift bar
My goal is to try and get 1000lbs total at any point in my life haha. Currently weigh 145. I can hit these with decent warm ups. 265lbs Squat, deadlift 300lbs and bench is my weak point at 185lbs. Any tips on how to improve bench?
Dude those are seriously good numbers for your weight. Start eating more and your bench will go up with the size. How tall are you? Close Grip Bench and Weighted Dips helped mine.
I am at 130lbs Bodyweight had a 330lbs deads, 175lbs bench, 240lbs squat, my goal is also 1000lbs bro, all I can say is if you are benching 2x a week try 3x a week, add a variation like mines are paused bench, larsen and close grip, varied each session, also focus on your weak points, mine are triceps so I put in a bit more volume and intensity in doing my tricep accessories
I’m around 5’7 - 5’8ish. Eating a lot more is challenging. I’m already at 2600 a day and that’s hard enough. Thank you for the advice and encouragement!
hey john any tips on how i can be explosive like you if i use hook grip on deadlift,, by explosive i mean lifting liking a spring like you do,,,, I cant lift it that fast ,, i have to adjust my hook always
i got to ask, whats the exact technique are you using? i can see that you are not pulling the slack, (maybe i am wrong), i wonder how this technique better for you to lift more? another thing- whats the purpose of the wrist wraps at deadlift (i wonder if it is wraps) thnx for responding.
I am pulling slack out of the bar. It just happens quick. I set up my air and brace at the top. After grabbing the bar, I begin pulling the slack as I pull my hips down into position.
What’s a good supplemental exercise for the axle bar deadlifts? My gym doesn’t have these I bring my own deadlift bar😂. Got these about 2 weeks out think I got one more week after this of the volume block left.
@@noahstone1328A coach at my gym was talking about getting stuck. He said he considers plateaus to be an entire year without progress. There are a lot of options with programming and nutrition to try. You probably don’t need chemical help.
@@noahstone1328 I wouldn't recommend PED's to the majority of people. Being at my level, there are a few benefits, that outweigh the negatives of PED's. For the average person, that's just not the case. As far as going back to the IPF, never. I'm of the opinion, once you hop on, you can't go back to test powerlifting.
Big fan of you showing accessories a lot more in this one 🔥
I love hearing this guy talk

Hey John, when are you dropping a workout playlist for us, love the songs you use in your videos.
The one I use while training the most part is called 2300 on spotify.

They sent a pair when they first released. I had them customized by @bstreetshoes on instagram
Bro got 1000 plus aura

@ Eating to grow is a fucking Slog. Best of luck man, you’re gonna blow those numbers to crazy heights in the next few years 👍

Deadlift doesn't require explosiveness. You want to be smooth coming off the floor, and then accelerate through the lift.
This is my favorite deadlift advice ive read. You dont need to sneak up on the weight.
John, do you ever wish that you stayed natty and competed at Sheffield?
Yea, a part of me wishes I could have had a shot at Sheffield. At the same time, I don't regret switching to untested.
@ no reason to live in regret as you have already conquered both realms 😂 thanks for the reply man

@@MHB30 thnx for the response
John, why the wrist wraps while deadlifting? Genuinely curious
He’s said in the past it’s for comfort and makes grip feel better psychologically
It’s kinda the same thing as people wearing elbow sleeves during squat, no actual need to wear them whatsoever
What gym did you go to in Seattle?
Rain City Barbell
I wish my deadlifts could start as slow as yours 😂
What pre do you use?
why not use baby powder in training so it is more comp specific?
@@constantinoslydakis6387 because I’m not a baby
@MHB30 damn never thought about it like that
@@constantinoslydakis6387 Joking aside, it also just makes a mess.
@constantinoslydakis6387 leave the man alone dude, he ain't giving you no hugs, go, shoo!
Perkins looked good at Sheffield, I'm surprised you didn't compete, with it being all champions.
Sheffield is thru the IPF which is drug tested (John isn’t natural) and he uses things like deadlift bars and the IPF rules are different
I think a better way of saying it is “John competes untested” cause no offense there’s no way you genuinely believe ipf guys are natty
Hits a 848 ... 'yeah not bad!' Only elite lifters could think of doin this I don't he realises how strong he is sometimes! 😅
woa
What’s a good supplemental exercise for the axle bar deadlifts? My gym doesn’t have these I bring my own deadlift bar😂. Got these about 2 weeks out think I got one more week after this of the volume block left.
You can just do stiff bar deadlifts
John would you ever consider going back natural and doing an IPF meet I think you could still win!
He definitely could win, but it’d be boring. Once you experience lifting on PEDs there’s no going back 😂
I want to try but I’m scared I’m stuck right now on a 501 deadlift at 178 I think I got more but I’m just stuck
@@noahstone1328 don't do it. What meaning does lifting more have if you had to take roids to do it. You're not making a living off lifting
