These post meet videos are a must. A lot of young people get to see and follow history being made video after video. Awesome time for upcoming youthful powerlifters
Very cool seeing all this effort put in the editing, video was nice as fuck. You will get 2300 next time john, awesome performance regardless undisputed goat.
The Squat and the Bench press went well congratulations on those lifts. I would lightly oil the inside of those sleeves and have someone reliable to put them on and take them off. The effort to put them on cost you in the deadlift. Then towel off the oil on your legs so you do not get disqualified for that in the deadlift. Those sleeves where different!
Well you all beat me to it. Seeing those two together is pretty epic. Coan is absolutely the best and laid the groundwork for these types of lifts at these weights.
Tearing the callous was a heartbreaker. You can't just power through it. Like you said, they won;t let you bleed all over everything. Anyway, you got the Squat WR to go with the bench and DL and total.
Grats on the world record squat! It goes to show how everything has to go almost perfect to get the records. Now you know how to diet and loose water more effective will you be trying the 90kg class another go now?
He still squatted 805lbs., benched 590lbs.and deadlifted 904lbs. in the 198lb. weight class, even though the lifts are at different meets, might not be quite the same in all in the same meet, still extremely bad ass. His personal totals add up to 2299 or so because of the kilo set. His capabilities of strength in each lift were there to total 2300 lbs. at 198lbs. That still means a lot I feel. It is very tough to peak in all three lifts, besides one slight stumble, squat set up., miss groove bench, or bad grip, torn callous with these aggressive knurl deadlift bars everything is derailed. Good for him having world record marks in each lift in a full meet!
BTW, just insane, you're by far the best of all time ever since you were all natty demolishing everything, like, you're basically the Ronnie Coleman of powerlifting, the argument "yo, if you're natty, then if you started taking stuff you would be absolutely the best" applies just to you and RC HAHAHA
Hey John Where can I get some of your apparel? And do you deliver to New Zealand? You’re freaken machine brother so there’s almost not limit to what sort of crazy numbers you can pull at meets 💪
Does just reaching down and grabbing the deadlift bar affect how well you get a grip on it sometimes? It seems like most people spend a couple seconds getting their grip secured before pulling.
Called grip and rip I think the idea is using the stretch reflex to generate more power off the floor. Where usually peaple reach down the are wedging(building tension and pulling the slack out of the bar)
@@quinhahnarmstrong4627 grip n rip is an inaccurate description of John's technique. He builds tension at the top, so that he can be quick with his slack pull and, as you say, use the stretch reflex.
@@TheJipino what would a more accurate description be? If you don’t wedge you have to build tension/brace at the top before you grab and pull or grip and rip. Genuinely asking or if the issue is my description of a stretch reflex?
@@quinhahnarmstrong4627I think it's called a top down setup when you set up your brace at the top. Grip n rip is associated with a lack of technique and no slack pull.
What does the diet of low carbs and high fiber look like? One day out, I usually drink nothing and dry scoop whey. Two days out, I usually buy one of those squeeze tubes of peanut butter and take little hits of it throughout the day in addition to whey. Whey isolate has a lot of potassium so is decent for flushing out sodium.
What would be a tip to avoid that kind of grip incident? It happens to a lot to many people, ruining their totals. My approach is to keep the hand as smooth as possible.
Taking care of calluses is definitely important to reduce risk of tearing/pain, but I'd say that just having a strong grip is the biggest factor. Even if you practice good skincare, having a sharp barbell slide down your hand while you're holding on tight will quickly tear your skin apart. In this video, John specifically mentioned that his grip was weak due to the excessive effort he put into pulling knee sleeves up and down which could at least partially explain how his hand was torn.
Do you think it was his forearm strength or the callous that made the difference? He fatigued trying to get the sleeves on but does that affect the callous?
@Steven-go1vh What likely happened was he started losing his grip due to fatigue from trying to get his knee sleeves on. This caused the bar to start slipping in his hand, which led to his calous being torn open.
Fookin amazing. Can anyone answer accurately; -What weight would John have recovered to by the time of completion? Back to 215/ 98kg? -Does the cut remove fat and liquid only, no muscle loss?? -How much stronger would John be if he did not cut at all?
He weighs around 98-100kg without water cut. He water cuts so its mostly water weight loss and nutrients. He would definitely be stronger if he didn't have to cut. Around 20kg more to total without difficulty
What is your walking weight? I'm walking around 102-104kg @8-9%bf and plan to compete at the 90kg class. My partner will be managing my post weigh in IV and rehydration (she's an RN), and will be using a charity deadlift competition coming up to get a practice run in before doing a serious run at my next sanctioned meet. Tried to drop a few kg in the last few months, but ended up recomping instead lol.
@@MHB30 do you think cutting that much weight is easier than at a higher BF level? My last 10kg weight cut was at a higher weight class, and definitely at a higher BF level. So this is new territory for me in a sense

OSG just released the axle deadlift for reps in one minute is 700lbs. How many do you think you’ll get? My bet is you will easily win this event no problem.
They do have one (at least now). The heavy is 700 and the light is 595 and any amount on the heavy beat any amount on the light. I don’t see how you could be beat on this event 😅
What happens if you miss a lift at the first or second attempt in powerlifiting? Are you forced to repeat the same weight on your next attempt or can you go up like in weightlifting?
I’m not really a powerlifter but I’m confused why his grip was tired after squat. Is he really gripping it that hard? Is he trying to like bend the bar?
I talked about it in the video. The issue was from trying to pull the knee sleeves up. Powerlifters will try and maximize the amount we get out of whatever gear is allowed in a specific meet. For this one, knee sleeves are part of that kit. To maximize them, we get quite still and tight sleeves. Before my second attempt, I went to pull my sleeves up again. Due to increase blood flow in my legs and the sweat on my skin, the sleeves were too tight to pull over my calves. I started to panic and try and pull harder. This is what lead to my forearms and hands being wrecked.
They probably weren't actually touching, just hovering. When spotting that kind of weight you need to be close if you have any hope of catching a drop. I've spotted at a few meets and that was the guidance when you get to 500/600+ lbs.
