Hi! I am Mari Carmen, great video!! Currently I am considering to buy Z6 or Z6 II but I am not sure which one, so which one do you recommend me to buy? I mainly use for portraits photography for my kids; by the way, they move a lot
@@maricarmenrico9842 this sort of question is always a bit tricky. Is it paid portraits and a lot of them? If so, and if it were me I’d be justified buying the Z6ii if you can afford it. If it’s just to enjoy and have the kids photographed the z6 or even z5.
Sony A7 III :/ Have a D3400 atm, but want better autofocus
I was going to buy Z5, but then I read its issues "noise look screen" in night time. I would like to start shooting night sky, so Im saving more money to buy Z6ii

After years with Nikon cameras I have finally settled on the Z6 and Z7. I will use the Z6 mainly for video and low light whilst the Z7 will be my main camera. I don't find the single card a hindrance. This is a personal choice which suits my needs. The Z system lenses are perfect with the Z cameras and look forward to new releases. Thanks Ralph for the video and the information provided.

I had this debate and chose the z6ii, huge upgrade from my d5600 which I had for almost 3 years

After watching so many videos about Z5 and Z6II, I finally made the decision to purchase Z5 with 24-70/4 on the new year Jan 1, 2022, as a back for my D750 which I am using from past 3 years. I have got a deal with Z5 with an extra 15c battery and 64 gb uhs-ii card in the box. Till now have done 3 projects with 2500 shots total, I am quite pleased with the Z5 in low light condition and also with the image quality. I can make the composition faster and editing the photos has become much easier. I just hope it had better battery life like D750, even though it has bigger battery when compared with Z6 or Z6ii. I am quite happy I made the right decision and saved some money for the S lines lenses. Thanks Ralph for the videos you made on Z5.

Just purchased the Z5 and the z 24-120mm f4 s along with the z 40mm f2 s lenses. Your videos helped so much! I've been shooting Olympus for years now, and will be sticking with the OM-1 for sports and wildlife, but for everything else, the Z5/24-120 combo is cracking. Great images SOC and far less post processing. Thanks Ralph for your straight-up assessment and quality videos!

oh God why have i stumbled upon your OM1 and Z5...
i need guidance because i really want OM1 but will be sticking to a 12-40ii lens in the long run (currently own GX85 + PL 25 f1.4i)... or should i go straight to Z6ii + 24-70f4 kit.
i am currently just taking clear photos of my 6mos old daughter and occasional places where we go to. so im not sure which is sufficient/overkill for the job.
I appreciate that this video is made in 2022. The price of CFexpress B usuable in Z6ii is available from Sandisk for $95 USD for 128Gb from B&H Photo New York, as holiday sale in Dec. 2023 and $140 USD for 256GB plus taxes. Less of a big price now compared to 2022. Although Sandisk Pro SD cards are extremely low priced at B&H online. Makes the Z6ii and Z5 affordable to buy memory cards in any format. Cheers!

I used my Nikon D5100 since 2013 and finally decided to move to a mirrorless camera. Based on a great deal for the Nikon Z5, I decided to purchase it and move into full-frame. I was able to get it almost new plus a 50mm 1.8 Z lens for just under $1,200 USD. I bought 3 other Z lenses on deep discounts and I'm very happy with the Z5. I would've love to have purchased the Z6II, but it was too high of a price for me at $1,700 USD new. My Z5 without the lens was about $760 USD used and in pristine condition, so it was a significant price difference.

@09:56 Actually as of firmware 2.2, the z6 supports cfexpress type b cards which thankfully now have more economic options than XQD. You can pick up a 512gb Angelbird cfexpress b for 180.

Yeah...choices choices. Have been reading about the Z5 and 6 and can't make up my mind. I already have SD cards so the 5 is a good choice in that respect, but the 6 offers a bit more. I do mostly landscapes, historical documentaries, journalism and other subjects pertaining to human interactions. I believe I am leaning towards the 6 though, but perhaps a bit more research and input from others would be in order. Thank you for the informative video.
I feel your struggle! Having been there myself. For me I lent toward the Z6 because of the Video needs I had. Perhaps that'll help.

What z glass do u have? As i have the og z6 and i ended purchasing some f mount lens like the 105 2.8G, the 85 1.8 and the 24-40/f4 z lens. I guess im asking what would be considered good glass for the z6
@@Isaypreach hey mate. I have the 24-70 f4 and the 50 f1.8 and the rest are all f mounts. I hear really good reports of the Z glass but it’s very pricey - hence me staying with my fmount glass
@@Isaypreach I have 3 S line Z lenses, S="Superior", 501.8 S, 24-70 /2.8 S, and 70-200 /2.8 S. Happy with all 3 lenses. Only gripe is that the 50 lens is noisy in AF-C (Continous) mode.
Hi Raph and thx for this video. When you simulate the price of the cameras + card you take a very large and expensive one 256 go. You can perfectly use 64 go and the increase of price is less.
That’s very true. I like to shoot with 256 GB as the 64GB fill up so quick. But you make a valid point. The price difference still exists between cards though regardless of size 👍 thanks for commenting :)

Thanks Good advice. I'm going for the Z 6 II. One thing more about the Z 6 II that I have not seen any one review is . That if you use vertical grips, the Z 5 and Z6 don't have a Nikon option for one. Only the Z 6 II does. Yes there is a 3rd party one for them, But you have to use a cable connected to the usb port. It's also cheap. You get what you pay for.
That’s really interesting. It’s likely Nikon trying to increase the pro appeal of the Z6ii. But the z7ii doesn’t have one available from Nikon?

Nikon MB-N11
Had so many cameras before ( for me its a hobby ) starting from sony a99 then, NEX7, Nikon d610 ending with Fuji xt-3) I sold the xt3 and bought the Z6 and for me its as if its my 1 cam that i should have bought from the first palce. Love everything about it, my only down side the autofucos sometimes miss the target might be me and bit slow. putting that a side even the lenses r exelente. I am so happy with it and photography for me is a life again. :D

I have the Z5 and really like it, however I might sell it and buy either Z6ii for its upgrade features, or wait until summer of 2024 for Z6iii announcement. While I like the new ZF for some things (ie. better tracking AF and Expeed 7), it is not the perfect camera for my shooting, and it lacks a few things they removed that are on Z6ii like top LED screen, one SD slot is in with battery not a separate door, poor grip. Thanks for explaining all the features of Z6ii and it is currently on sale for holidays and is tempting. I will keep z5 for now until next year.
The z6iii if and when it comes out and you can afford it will be a good buy. It’ll be expensive at the start though and I wonder how different to the z6ii. Often these things come down to budget though, don’t they.
Man, this video was helpful. Been running with Nikon DSLRs for 10+ years (D3100 & D800[LOVE IT]), stubborn to go mirrorless. But times are changing and making the move this year. Definitely not going into the Z7 models...DEFINITELY not that serious to go Z9. LOL Z6ii is for sure the target but seeing if any of these comparison review videos can convince me to go to Z6 to save coin. Lol But appreciate the breakdown comparison in this, thanks!
Glad I can be of service. If I was in ur position I’d aim for the Z6ii just to help future proof it. The z6iii may come out too but it depends how patient you can be and if they’ll do it 🤷🏼♂️
Get the z6 and use the extra money saved towards lenses man, the upgrade to the z6 is honestly NOT worth it bro, the z6 Ionia coming summer 2023 (confirmed from the leaks last week lol) and prices will drop after that on the z6ii and remember man, all of the “upgraded” versions on all cameras are literally just the exact same camera but with minor revisions JUST for them to release the camera in whatever year they are (sticking to schedule basically, releasing an upgraded model every 2 years to be consistent)
And that means that it’s a release just to stay on schedule, and NOT releasing an updated version because of an need to (due to a feature/fixing a issue on the prior model) and yeah, basically meaning it’s an artificial need
Plus remember that the upgraded models on all cameras are extremely minor, the major thing is the original device of any line, in this case being the z6

After MONTHS of looking into going full frame AND mirrorless from crop Nikon DSLRs, I made the jump in October 2021 to purchase the Z6 II and I'm only looking forward from here. I pondered the Z5 but the lack of compatibility with the MB-N11 was the biggest deciding factor to go to the Z6/Z7 II. I shoot a lot of portrait and my wrist as been getting to me with the whole up-and-over position when shooting portrait and the new grip has helped ergonomics A LOT.
Aside from that, the faster burst speeds, cleaner low light performance, and dual cards with CF Express B made the decision easy to go with the Z6 II and I recommend anyone, provided they have the money, to get the camera and even splurge on (2) spare EN-EL15c's and the MB-N11 grip. Go body only, get as much Z glass as you can afford for your use case, and shoot happy.
The Z7 II is for those that are printing HUGE prints, though I'm tempted to get it and make the Z6 II the secondary body for event photography.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography If you need something NOW, get the Z7 II package I previously described. Body, MB-N11 grip, (2) spare EN-EL15c's.
If you can wait on delivery, the Z9 is well worth the wait. I haven't seen ONE person anywhere online say a bad thing about the Z9. From the shooting experience to the images, the Z9 is likely the 2022 camera of the year, and we're only in March!
BTW, the Z 70-200mm f/2.8S is the BEST lens in Nikon's lineup.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography If you compare all of the costs of the Z7 II package to the Z9, the delta to the Z9 doesn’t seem like a lot and it’s a no brainer unless you need something right now.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography It’s still vaporware right now, so only count on what is available. I’m going Z9 by 2024.
If possible, I'll suggest to wait for the post Z9 models, such as the Z5 II or Z6 III. The Z9 established the technology, file format and interface similar to the D3 with the DSLR.
Answering your question as an enthusiast, I bought a Z6 + 50 f/1.2 S while waiting for the Z9. I would have gone with a Z50 if it has IBIS to keep the cost down. The Z5 fps is too slow (not about shooting at xx fps, but burst rate) and the opportunity cost of the Z6 II is too high as an interim/backup camera.
Did you get the z9 in the end? That’s great advice. So you think they’ll go for a z6iii?
@@RalphMayhewPhotography No rush and I'll get one as soon as the Z9 is in stock later in the year. There aren't even accessories such as an L-bracket available yet. Not sure about your Z6III question, but I'm certain it will be around the corner in 2023/24.
Once the new Z6/7 III models come out with a new focus system, the I and II models will dump a lot on value.
@@ryanb8736 That's why I recommend to buy only the new models. Just compare the old D100 & D200 against the models after D3 & D300. History just repeats itself.
@@bfs5113 I always do. I buy new models from each brand. I thought about getting Z9, but I don’t need a bigger body just to have a great autofocus system. I still have my R6 which does amazing in sports shooting.
I did recently picked up a Z7II, but it’s autofocus is so far behind for a 3000 camera. I returned it.
Thought about just getting a bunch of Nikon lenses and just grabbing the cheap Z5 to get in on my lenses, but rather just spend more and get Z6II, but then again 1000 more got me a Z7II that I didn’t care for. But 2500 more, I can get a Z9. I have a problem!
Financially I would be better off getting a Z9, because cost of ownership in a year will lose less than a Z7II. Cheapest way to rent one for a year. I do that with a lot of newest cameras.
I was gonna sell my R6, but I can’t now. After playing with so many cameras lately, that’s the best bargain you can get these days. It’s a powerhouse for only 2500.
I might even just wait for Z8 next year. A Z7 body with a Z9 focus system would be the ultimate!
I did something similar wanting to upgrade from a D750; for me the Z5 is more of a side step and a true bridge from this model. I decided to jump into mirrorless when Nikon announced the Z9, where we could see the leap in technology how suddenly how much more promising the Z system became. Also the announcement of the 24-120 and the FTZ II told me that it was time.
Instead of getting a Z6II and adapt all of my lenses I snatched a Z5 at $999 and bought the 50 1.8S, the 14-30 and was able also to get the 105 late last year when it was really hard to get.
Now after getting the 24-120 I’m shooting to get the Z8, although I think this year the Z6 III is more realistic.
Sounds like a great strategy there. The 50mm is a gem of a lens. Nice line up. Do you enjoy the z5? I have a z5 and z6 and always seem to prefer the z6 🤷🏼♂️
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I do enjoy the Z5 and the Z lenses in general, image quality is almost the same in terms of dynamic range but the real champs are the lenses themselves.
I have a toddler and with the D750 I wasn't able to track and take sharp photos, with the Z5 I noticed that is still slow and takes sometimes more time to track and focus that I'd like and still misses in certain occasions. Also the framerate is an issue at 4.5 FPS but it's a compromise and I understand that it's reserved for the higher models.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography In my job when I need photo or video I have access to Canon gear and in my opinion the Z5 with a 24-120 and the 105 macro trumps a R6 with the 24-105 with the 100 macro (also dealt with the overheating firsthand).

Would buy the Z5 right now, but I found a Z6ii with a damaged HDMI, rest was fine, for the price of a used Z5. Will likely get a Z5 as a second camera down the road. Good comparison. Tried the Z6 when it first came out and it didn't do it for me, but 4 years later now that the system has matured, the Z series is the best value proposition out there. Get them now before the youtubers and tiktok influencers get on a nikon kick!

I bought an early Z6 to pair with my D500. Only downsides for me with the Z6 was the slow restart after standby on early firmware, I use single point AF so the Z6 was at least as good AF as the D500. Sold both in May 2021for the Z6ii because the spec said better restart time and some AF improvements -perhaps I'd try the auto area animal detect. Recently added a bargain 2nd hand Z7 with the 3.4 firmware for safari and wow -it matches the restart time of the Z6ii and the AF seems just as good -though I'm still using single point AF!! With hindsight I'd have stuck with the Z6 and saved my money. BTW, sold my Z6ii and bought a shop clearance new Z6 recovering some money for my new 105 mm MC. Money is best spent on lenses after all.
Z6 ii demands shamefully high priced memory cards- with one bay forcing you to buy the super expensive type.

I have a z7ii and a z 6 was so tempted to sell the z6 and buy Z6ii but on reflection bought a 20-200 2.8 instead ..glass is great and keeps its price in comparison to a camera for me anyway

I bought the Z5 and the 50 f/1.8S together six months ago for less than what the camera and cards cost now! That’s another thing - the cost of the FTZ adapter, or a Z Mount lens… $$$

The z5 and Z6ii are similar to use just the Z6ii has extra features. The main difference as you say os fps.

All would be fine. A macro lens is what you need. So maybe the cheapest body - z5 and spend the extra on the lens and FiTZ II adapter.

What kind of logic is this, haha. SD is thing of the past. There is no much sense to use last generation camera with card from 2010. z6 with CFExpress would've been the better choice than z6ii with SD card

You want the z5 over the Z6ii. The Z6ii cost more and is a far better video hybrid. But just for some great shots on a full frame I’d recommend the Z5.
Well Ralph, I would put another variable in consideration - lenses. Depending on what you do, mostly that will determine your choice. I would rather buy a Z5 with a good lens than Z6 II body only. I do mainly landscapes and it is more than enough for me at the moment. I am looking to get more lenses and in a couple of years go for a new body. If someone is into portraits, wildlife and sports obviously the Z6 or Z6 II are better choices than Z5, although you can do some of that even with it. I own the Z5 and I am more than satisfied, and for the landscape if I could afford it, I would rather buy the Z7 II. Good video, and having in mind the shortages and prices going up people should consider a cheaper option and save for a body in the future when the prices come down. I bought my Z5 last April with 24-50mm and the FTZ adapter for 1500 euro (roughly 1,650 USD) and I am very happy with the purchase.

So the Z6 also can take CF Express Type B if you have updated the firmware. There are cheap CF Express B cards - Pergear (spelling?) makes a 64GB CF Express Type B Card for like $80 - it is not fast - but it is as fast as SD so if you are just trying to get going you don't need to spend $300 on the card for a Z6 or Z6II.

I bought a nikon z5 (850€) and a the nikkor z 35mm 1.8 (700€) so together 1550€. Im so happy that the first camera and lens i ever bought and i get really sharp and nice pictures.

I got the Z7 recently because it can be had new for less than the Z6 II and I shoot landscape.

I never buy new. I wait for the early-adoptors to find all the kinks with the new models and I wait for used prices to hit about 50% of original release price (or less.) I've just ordered a boxed, mint used Z6 for £860 U.K. I almost bought a used Z6 back in Jan 2022 - so I've had the F2Z converter sitting in a cupboard waiting for nearly 2 years LOL. The QXD thing is a little bit of a hurdle but I bit the bullet and paid £130 U.K for a 120GB Sony XQD card. Currently I am shooting with old D3S & D3X bodies and I absolutely love them. The Z6 will be an interesting experiment as the last mirrorless cameras I owned were a Fuji X-T1 & X-T20 back in 2017.

I have a z6, but need to buy a second body. The Z6 AF has improved dramatically in the last update and Z6II dual processors don't give you much of an advantage so I think I would go with the Z6 over the Z6II because I can't justify the 400$ more for a slight update. If Nikon comes with a Z6III that has the Z9 Expeed 7 processor now that would be a bargain, but I doubt that it will be released anytime soon
Sounds wise to me. I don’t think they’ll share the Expeed 7 in lower range models. People would then want to z9. I hope I’m wrong but I can’t see it changing anytime soon.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography They should integrate the new processor because Nikon has been struggling against the AF of Sony and Canon in that range. So if they want to keep up they have to integrate it or else people are gonna switch to R5 and A7RIV. They've been the underdog for a long time, lost like half their share in the camera department(which is a shame because they are doing the best lens at the moment and excellent cameras) and honestly the Z9 is a very specific camera. If I had the money to buy it I wouldn't just because I won't use even half its features. Like...I would never use 4k/8k video and 30 burst shots etc.
I think you’re spot on @@merrymanson but they’re carrying their past behaviour into the present. I can see them choosing not to and in 5 years time be just where they were 2 years ago - nearly out of business again. I really hope I’m wrong but nothing of their past indicates their future will be any different :(
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Nikon keeps shooting themselves in the foot, I love nikon cameras but they piss me off cause they dont seem to get basic business. Canon is predatory and keeps chaning lens mounts so often you get screwed out of being able to upgrade, so I dont buy canon cameras and i hate sony with a passion.

I am considering buying the Z6 or Z6ii as like the idea of the top screen to see my settings easily, but the thought of spending over £100 for a memory card puts me off so much even in the dual set up on the 6ii. Is the Z5 full-frame same as the other 2 as the savings between that and the Z6 versions is huge?

If you have a choice to pick Z5 Brand New In Box, and 2nd hand Z6 with around 7K Shutter Count. I don't have CFExpress Type B card yet to put into the Z6, so that's an extra cost to consider. I do stills all the time, so I don't need fast and moving AFC, just need the Eye AF to be there. I can also wait if Nikon really wants to release Z6 III this year if that's ever happening. What's your opinion? Thanks for the video, before!

Oooo that’s a tricky one. I reckon I’d either wait for the Z6 iii if you can and if you can afford it when it comes out. Otherwise I’d go the Z6. For the same praise and very low shutter count - the card is quicker and it’s a better camera. That’s my thoughts on me :)
I've seen and read reviews regarding the Z6 acquires focus faster than the Z5 regardless having the same AF systems .. They say the Z5 tends to hunt more when shooting in low light mainly due to the Z6's BSI sensor having a faster readout than the Z5's CMOS sensor .. Is this by anyway true ?? Did you experience something like this in your reviews ??

Good video Ralph. I've shot Canon for 40+ years. I've decided to go to a full frame mirrorless now that the technology has had some time to advance. I've been considering the Z5 for a few days, then thinking Z6 before going back to Z5. I'm primarily a landscape shooter that might dabble into portrait and street photography. I live in the middle of nowhere so there aren't any camera shops for 80 miles. Between the Z5 and 6 is one body larger than the other? If so is it significant? Second question, is BSI going to do anything to improve image quality in low light or does it only assist auto focus? Thanks
I’m pretty sure from memory and use (as I’m away atm) the sizes are pretty much the same. Same feel in the hand. The BSI gives a slight low light advantage but probably not enough to justify the price difference. If I had your needs I’d be leaning toward the z5 and spend the savings on some great glass. The 14-30 f4 S is gold and then maybe a 35mm or 85mm sigma art lens. 🤷🏼♂️ that’s what I’d be considering but only you know your circumstance :)

The expensive cards pushes me away from the 6 but I prefer to have the most current features in an attempt to hold resale value. @@RalphMayhewPhotography All of these companies market in similar fashion, mark 2, mark 3 etc. I've been burned by upgrades before. Inevitably a newer version is going to be released a short time after you get used to your new gear. Depending on the number of units in inventory you could see 5 year old technology still being sold at cut back prices while they wait to release a new model. Mirrorless has been a huge opportunity for them to sell new gear so it's very competitive across the top manufacturers. The problem as I see it is the video is the area of the most improvement. Us still photographers don't need to spend big money on full frames to have a great camera. We aren't the driving force in R&D like the old days.

Here in India , Nikon's website says buy a Z6 it will include 2 64GB XQD cards and a card reader , which makes me not worry abouts the XQD card prices.

I think z5 is good enough. For me, I normally shoot photos portrait etc. only. It creates beautiful images! the update of z6 z6ii seems to be more video-friendly. I'm glad I did buy a z5 , but if u r a video typed guy, I think z6ii is a better choice!

Today the price of the Z6II should really be calculated with a CFexpress type B card. That puts it way closer to the Z6.
The 512gb card from Sabrent that I bought (which is plenty fast enough for this camera and my Z7II) cost 150€. Which is pretty much the same in dollars.
So that way the total cost comes down to 2146 bucks for the Z6II. Which is about a 9% increase in cost compared to the Z6 AND you get a faster card with a way large capacity.
There is also the option of buying a used camera. My Z7II, wich has an MSRP of about 2999€, cost me just 1999€ used. But on the outside it is brand new and it only had about 10k clicks when I got it. So it basically was almost brand new. A used Z6II would have cost me 1200 to 1300€ in the same condition, putting it in the same ballpark as a new Z5, which makes the Z5 look like a really stupid option at that point.
The store is also reputable, they exist for over 100 years at this point and gave me a warranty of 12 months. Plus I supported a local business. Overall one of the best purchases I have made I'd say.

The control you have is over mic sensitivity between 1-20. I set mine to 15. This is only regarding internal z5 audio and not about line in unfortunately.
Im a newbie, im choosing between z5 & z6II as my first camera.
my concern is if i get the z5 would it last for many years in terms of its internal technology & features..
Z6II is almost twice the price of z5 body only, also its fps is more than double of z5, great lowlight capabilities than z5..

Well if you have the budget and want to future proof yourself as much as possible then the Z6ii is a terrific option which will be more future proof as you develop than the z5, in my opinion. 👍
The hard decision there, mate, so the Z-6II would be the cost of the camera plus the $400 compared to the $400 fix on your Z-6; I guess it boils down are those new features extend your creative worth the money upgrade.

I just got a good deal on the Z5, it was about 1290€ with ftz and garbage kit 24-50 (but for 50-100€ its ok to snag it) where the Z6 usually was 1800-2000€ with ftz and those stupidly expensive (but of course much better) cf cards are just not for me
That’s great mate. The kit lens is the one i vlog with. I love it coz it’s wide enough (just) and super sleek and small. But I can see why you’d want better glass.

I reckon the AF is as good if not better. The Z5 is full frame so does better in low light and gives you an extra stop on ur lenses.

If it were me and you have the budget, I’d want to do as much as I can to future proof my gear so I’d got the Z6ii

@@DexMediaja the second memory card is good for a couple of things:
Backup of files in case one fails (as you’ve said)
Differentiating video storage from photo storage using a faster card for video.
Doubling (increasing) your storage capacity.
It’s so rare a card fails these days that if it’s not absolutely essential to your work, you can probably give it a miss. Each person is different though, what works for me might not be comfortable for you :)

@@RalphMayhewPhotography true, the older the stuff the better. A few years ago I stumbled upon a Nikkormat FT2 from 1975. This thing was new in the box. Paid 50 bucks for it. The Nikkormat cameras were the poor mans Nikon F, F2 etc.. but it surpasses almost every todays camera in term of built. Now these are the hidden gems.

In photography, you don’t focus your money on the body, you focus your money on good glass. This is especially true for digital cameras. Use the money you saved to get better glass for your camera.
My only response to that is the some bodies lend themselves to achieving things others can’t. So good glass is essential but a good body that suits your photography is also important.

I don't understand why the z6 (first gen) don't get a update to shoot 10bit internally like the z7 first gen version. Especially when they both have same processor. Those z6 would fly off the shelves from that alone.

I'm thinking about purchasing my first Nikon mirrorless camera. I'm into trainspotting and landscape and the odd wildlife. I'm a hobbyist / intermediate with a camera.
Would the Nikon Z6 ii be the camera for me? Also what telephoto lens would I need as some of the train photography is on private property?
It’s all good mate, assuming you have the budget the Z6ii would easily cover your needs and give you room to grow. It would sit at the top end of what you’d need. Tamron just released a 150-500 Z mount that might be perfect for your needs. I’d start there if it were me.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Awesome, one more question I forgot to ask is the low light factor on both the video side and the photography side as some of the trainspotting is done at night.
Living in Melbourne it can get very cold at night.
@@1964wingmanall cameras will struggle at night to film or take photos that are t long exposure. Of the ones available form the Z6ii down, the Z6ii will handle the low light the best. You will struggle to take a non-long exposure photo of a train at night as you’d need to use a shutter speed of at least 1/250 I’d imagine Menai g your iso will be extremely high and you’ll get noise. It’d be like that with any camera though. If you want light trails however you can’t go wrong with the Z6ii.

For a regular photographer who has no use for video, just get a Sony A7R ii used for a grand n change, and you get 42 megapixels with more lens selection. Unless you have a specific need for video, these are a waste and cost 2x what you’d pay for the Sony.
It might be a little more complex than that if you factor in whether you're in the Nikon ecosystem with all your glass already, and if you factor in Sony's glass cost. And what body you prefer to shoot with.The Sony A7R ii also seems fairly costly in my brief searching of it online. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion :)

Wait for 15 years Nikon Z5,6 7 cameras still do not have flip screen to vary-angle selfies, body size and weight are big and heavy, I have to change to Canon for R6II camera which is lighter and have vary-angle flip screen.
