I’m really interested to know… did you watch this video because you’re thinking of buying a Z5?
Yep, I certainly am! I may be doing a bit of video for live band performances, in low light. The Z6 would be better for that. But not sure how much of that (if any) I'll do, so the extra cost is hard to justify. Also the extra cost of memory cards. I know the Z6 II now has dual slots, but I think only one is SD. And the Z6 II is more cost again. As an upgrade from my D5200, I'm sure the Z5 does a way better job of video anyway!!
@@pvanb291 I think you’ll be happy with the Z5. The Z6ii feels outrageously expensive :( I would like one but not for the price it is. And yes you’re right XQD cards are savage in price. Thanks for the comment :)
I watch your videos and feel really pleased that I bought a Z5 last christmas. That don’t change the fact that I would change it to a Z7II tomorrow - if someone gave me 1000 euro 😊
@@peterjoseph3839 thanks heaps Peter. I totally agree with you on the z7ii 😉💪
Yes or the Z50.
Thank you!! Been looking to purchase this camera and your video was great! Gave me some useful info that reading articles did not :)
I’m stoked to hear that Suzy. Glad I could help.
Thank you so much! I did watch this video and (along with my 2 favourite Canadian UA-camrs at DPReview) I have decided to go ahead and buy one. Your comments were just what I needed.
I’m stoked to hear I’ve been helpful. Who are your favourite two Canadian YTers?
Chris Nicholls and Jordan Drake. I also like Peter McKinnon but not so much for reviews and he doesn't work for DPReview🤣
@@caymanbonnie McKinnon isn’t a good reviewer at all lol. I love watching him but not for reviews so much. Haven’t heard of those other two. You’re a fan of DPReview then 🤣
That's a real high end camera there Legend! I like the features and I would really enjoy doing some video with that type of stabilization. Thanks for sharing your insight!
It sure is a good one Jon. Thanks mate.
Your earlier videos of the Z5 were what led YT to recommend your channel. I was researching the Z5 for purchase consideration and watched hours of reviews. I ended up purchasing the camera aware of what it could and could not do... thanks to videos like yours. (and you got a subscriber)
Oh wow. That’s really cool. I really value your comments and interactions Leon and to think it began from a Z5 video. Thank you!!
How do you like the camera?
@@TellurdogIsayhi yeah love it. Feels good in the hand and delivers the goods.
Thanks for sharing; really great information Ralph. I’m a canon guy but have always loved the quality of the Nikon images!
Thanks so much Jo. I’ve really appreciated your comments. It’s interesting what systems we ‘marry’ ourselves too. I own a canon but don’t enjoy it much, but love the lenses and the range. But I think it’s because I’ve used Nikon for so long now. A while back I considered moving to Sony but had too much Nikon glass. I’m glad I stayed. Yet if it wasn’t for the advances made by the Z9 I wasn’t feeling confident about their future. Feeling much more reassured now ;)
Your videos helped me decide to get a Nikon Z5 :) Enjoyed my purchase so much. Subscribed to your channel. Thanks for your great content. More power to you sir!
Thanks heaps for the feedback Jeff. Much appreciated.
Hey Ralph: Great presentation. I love your passion. I love your vibes, keep it up!
Awww thank you so much Howard.
Great job. Cleared up a lot of questions I had about the camera :)
Cheers. Super appreciate this.
Thank You. Just bought it. Works great to me.
That’s awesome to hear. You’ll love it 👍
I just found this channel. Great information that deals with actual usage. The z5 seems like a solid entry into mirrorless cameras. I have a Nikon D610 and can’t decide whether I should trade it in on a z5 or keep it as a second camera. I’m not anywhere near using the D610 to its full potential, so I’m guessing a move to the z6 might be in advisable. Thank you for doing this video.
Thanks heaps for the comment mate. It’s always good to know all your camera does and get it to the point of frustrating you by it’s limitations, which is when you know to upgrade.
Best Video on this camera yet and I watched a lot....good Stuff
WOW... that is high praise. Thanks so much!
@@RalphMayhewPhotography some ppl don't know how to keep it simple especially to start....so yeah Great Stuff
Thank you. This has been helpful considering I am new to Nikon
Super glad it was helpful!
GREAT video! Really helpful 🎉
Thanks so much Ian.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography not at all 👍🏻 the best video I've seen in this particular camera... Really helpful 'hints' and things to be aware of before buying
I totally agree with your comments about the 4k crop. But I have to admit that I did not think about it that way until I heard your thoughts about it. Thank you.
I hope I didn't disservice you with them ;)
@@RalphMayhewPhotography your comments were spot on in my opinion.
@@JB-ou6fl Fantastic. :)
Great vid, informative and entertaining.
We need to get people together and convince Nikon to give us who already purchased the original FTZ some kind of trade-in deal!!!!
Also as for battery life, it makes sense that it would chew through batteries using the screen in back.. however contrary to what Nikon says, using only the evf I get great battery life - like 3000+ shots at the zoo and still have half battery charge..
That is such a good idea!! I wonder if there’s a funny video in that lol
Sorry.. thats ~1500 and half battery, just thinking double would be 3000... and thats using evf priority, turning off while walking around, etc.. Flip it on while getting it off my shoulder and its ready by the time I get it to my eye.. good battery life for me.
Thanks Ralph. Great vid. Agree with all your comments. I enjoy my z5. It’s a camera that needs more love. Sad Nikon didn’t do a firmware update in line with the z6&7 for autofocus recently. Fingers crossed. I have found for my style of shooting that 3 frames is enough. I used that on my old d200 and it has carried over. You just have to anticipate. Wouldn’t be fun if the camera did everything for us huh.
Thanks heaps Rob. It’s an interesting thought you raise… would we want an AI camera? Half the fun is the challenge to photograph something we wonder if we can get the same result that’s in our heads. I think they’ll get to an update but I think they’ll waits a while. Thanks for your comment.
I have both 26 and z5 focus performance is basically identical i literally forget what camera I'm shooting with half the time.
@@Youmemba that’s good to hear 👍
I took mine as backup for my D500 to Costa Rica this spring & it saved my trip. Sure, it's a bit slow to focus in lower light but as you say, once you get used to it, it's great. I have both the Z6 & Z7 IIs and the Z5 is on my macro setup at home with Laowa 90 F2.8 2x and that combo is just fantastic since the Laowa is manual focus anyway. I just put a Raynox 250 on it & wow it's getting me amazing shots.
That’s great to hear mate. Well played 👏👏👏
I actually ended up buying this camera, and Was happy to find I can use the same batteries as my D7100 (and vice-versa). I really enjoy this camera as it’s my first full-frame, but not having that LCD on the top is an annoyance for sure!
Thanks Tom. Those batteries across models are super handy. And I’m with you on the top lcd. It’s funny how others don’t care about it lol
Excellent video 😊!
Oh thank you!!
Thank you for this video, it makes my choice easier 👍🏽
Stoked to hear that.
That is a helpful video
Thanks
Thank you so much!
For the price, this is a fantastic camera. I was lucky and got mine new for a steal at $1000 last summer with the FTZ adapter and a Manfrotto tripod included from a local brick and mortar trying to keep business. If you're just shooting stills, this camera has everything you need including low light capability. If you're planning on shooting video, then the Z6ii is obviously going to be the better buy since they are only $400 apart in price now.
Gosh I hadn’t realised the narrow price difference between the two. That’s really not much at all.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography yea. I didn’t realize they are so close in price now until I went to purchase another for my wife to learn on. Now it makes it a no brainer to save a little extra for the Z6ii for the back lit sensor, better video and as you mentioned the LCD.
Have a blessed week
You too! :)
I am mostly a Canon shooter, but Ive shot Sony, Fuji and currently own a Panasonic S5II. Was looking for a second cam and saw this for the sale price of $998 and bought one immediately. It's the same price as the RP but you get a better sensor, much better EVF, IBIS, an actual 1/8000s mechanical shutter, dual card slots, a larger battery and its weather sealed. It's an absolute steal and easily the best bang for the buck right now IMO. Looking forward to trying it out.
Yew!! You’re gonna love it!
Thanks for this video Ralph. But also, no thanks. Cuz now I just want a z5 even more. Lol. Great video!!!!!
Hahaha you’re most welcome 😜
Thanks for this !!
My pleasure.
Thanks for the video - I just traded my Canon T6i in on a new Z5 - I wanted a full frame mirrorless camera that was affordable to learn - I hope I enjoy it
Thanks David, Sounds like a good decision. I’m sure you’ll love it.
Thanks for another great Z5 vlog! One minute you make me want to make the jump and buy one and the next, I'm not so sure. I currently use a D7200 (which I love) and was wondering if the Z5 is that big of an upgrade? I'm mainly shooting landscape, nature and macro so a high fps isn't really needed. Any advice would be really appreciated.
G’day Nik. The D7200 was my camera of choice before upgrading to the Z6. I went the Z6 (not Z5) because I needed great video options and the Z5 wasn’t out yet. The Z5 as it’s mirrorless is an amazing upgrade. Mirrorless is incredible. So good in fact that using a DSLR again is a mind trip lol. In my humble opinion I think it is a significant upgrade for a great price point and you’ll love the experience. Let me know what you choose to do in the end. :)
In my opinion FF gives You a larger sensor... I have used a D7200 and find that it is only important to have the larger the thing that You view it on,,, My monitor is a 43" and when I have a photo printed I want a 20"x 30' print ,,, At that point I can see the IQ is much better with the FF sensor... And I could go on..... Best of Luck to You :)
i like the way you talk and the video content
Thanks. I appreciate that 💪
Very helpful video
Love hearing that!!
Yep certainly did
Will be my first mirrorless since my old analog Nikon f60
Am doing an Alaska cruise later in the year so am sussing out what lenses to potentially put on it or get away with a telephoto one to start with like the 28-200 ..undecided yet
Was a great informative video … cheers
BB
Awesome. Tamron have some really good zooms and all-rounders you might enjoy.
no lcd part i agree, i have the d90 but that small lcd on top really helps always
It sure does 👍
I’m watching this because I’m looking for a backup body for professional still photography work. Many pros that I know are using C30 as the backup, probably because has so small footprint in the gear pack. I’d love to have a FF as the backup, while saving some money, Z5 sounds to be an option that is quite fine actually.
Sounds like it would be a good match for you. It’s a very handy camera.
Gr8 video. I've tested the IBIS and it is extraordinary. Q: what is the tradeoff of using it? I mean, if i use it, what are we losing ( image quality?)?
If you use IBIS what’s the image quality loss? Hmmmm good question. I’ve no idea. But my reaction is to say none 🤷🏼♂️
Good video. to the point! It RAINS in Australia?
Thank you!! I know right, in as surprised and disappointed as you are AND it keeps happening?!?!?! 🤷🏼♂️😭
Great video. One question though... Do I get full IBIS - i.e 5 axis when used in conjunction with the ZTF adapter..? I read/heard something recently that one might only get 3 axis functionality.
Oh wow. I’ve no idea. I don’t why the camera would limit ibis based on what lens is out on as I understand that each lens has the option (or not) for stabilisation while each camera also has the option (or not) separately. The two can work together but aren’t dependant on each other - but I could be wrong? 🤷🏼♂️
I used my Z5 at an Air Show and got some good shots with the Z5, but yes having greater than 4.5 FPS would have been nice. Overall, I am satisfy with the choice I made.
Awesome man. So it went ok with high speed aircraft? Got a link to a pic??
😅 U so funny Ralph.. I've just purchased a Z5 on line now.. trading in my old d5000.. thanks will Def watch more of your videos.. alot to take in 😮wow.. just doing photography as a hobby for now so still learning alot.. much obliged 😊
I’ve a video coming out soon which is a whole step by step how you use the camera.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography great thanks alot
Thank you very much Sir.....I appreciate....
Thanks champion!
@@RalphMayhewPhotography you are a cowboy man.......I like you....I will learn a lot from you in term of nikon Z5.....I bought one last two weeks ago......God Bless You
@@rikkibalnegg1 HAHA, thanks so much - a cowboy hey! love it!
can you make a video with the eye autofocus on the z5 with the new frimware? or any big difference between z5 and z6 image quality?
I don’t think so. I think you need a Z6ii to pull that off. Image quality is basically the same.
Never heard an Ibis referred to as a 'Bin Chicken' before! I think that alone is worth the sub! 🤣🤣Good review too!
Hahaha that’s the way. Thanks champion!
No.2 there should be a setting, black on white or white on black to reduce light and battery use. 👍
Oh that’s good and so simple. Love it.
nice video, i think the Z5 is a great little camera often people will overlook such cameras for higher spec models that they’ll never use all the feature set though in all fairness this would be enough suit majority of amateur shooters or a great back for a pro.
Yep I think you’re bang on 👍👍
Muito obrigado pela aula, tem me ajudado muito.
My pleasure. So good to hear it.
Hey thanks for this amazing information. How can you move the focus point manually??? How does the camera behave in a studio when having strobes?
Thanks. You just use the joystick on single focus point mode 👍 I’ve not used the z5 with strobes sorry.
Thanks for sharing. Just have a question. I would appreciate if you help me... how can I save the files RAW AND JPG format?? I tried doing that using 2 cards but it didn't work.. any suggestion?
Hey. Thanks for the info! Just a question if you don't mind helping me... How can I save my pictures in both RAW AND JPG format? I set the camera but it didn't work. Any suggestions???
You perhaps should revise and add that it has a FANTASTIC feature called focus shifting or sometimes called focus bracketing for capturing a series of images whereby the focus is bumped a bit after each frame; to be processed using focus STACKING software like Helicon or Zerene.
Yeah that’s a great feature for macro especially 👌
I'm kinda torn between this in new condition brand new in box, or 2nd hand z6. I already have D3300 and D750, so I might use the FTZ before I pick up S line lenses which is a no brainer when I will get those. I mainly play with strobes and flashes both inside and outside a controlled environment, and according to this video I might find struggle, but it should be able to be cleared up with modelling light from my strobe, but don't really know how the EVF noise will tell. What do you think?
Are the cameras the same price? And what’s the shutter count on the z6?
It has helped!
Awesome!
Seems like a soild upgrade for me, im upgrading from a d7200. Nice to see I can use my old batteries and lenses! Would you recommend this camera body for architectural photography?
For sure. Make sure you put a wide enough lens on it and you’re golden. The f4 14-30 would be perfect. I’ve a review coming out soon.
What about Sony E to Nikon Z adapters? Have you had a chance to try some?
I'm considering a jump to nikon z from nikon f. I'm still not happy with how Nikon treats with what I perceive as a strategy to require pricey adds-on for some important functions (wifi ftp upload, gps modules,...). Also, since none of the af and af-d lenses will autofocus with the FTZ, there are only the af-s and af-p that will work fully. I could consider a usd250 adapter if it had a screw motor for af-d glass.
Sony E mount being open, there are so many very attractive not too pricey glass options. I am also probably in the situation of many of your viewers, having held to my fx dslr but having converted to sony apsc as a backup/video/light travel kit.
Thanks for your comment champ. I used to have a Sony a6000 which was my first mirrorless. I bought it to see if I wanted a mirrorless and then went Nikon because the rest of my old glass was Nikon. Unfortunately I has to ditch my DX glass. I’ve not used a Sony adapter but i do know a Sony shooter who uses an adapter with Canon glass and he really rates it 🤷🏼♂️
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Thanks for the reply. I actually meant the other way around, E to Z, as in using E-mount glass on Nikon Z.
I use a F to E adapter on my sony and it just works brilliantly for still, MF only for video.
Thanks Ralph! On the dot!!!
Thanks so much.
Thanks for the nice video! I would buy another Nikon D780 - which I already use - than a Z5 ; the first, even being a dslr, it's an amazing camera. Cheers! D.
Thanks. Great to hear 👍
01:59 I dont think the Z5 has a top LCD scree Ralph ? Any leaks on the GoPro 11 yet ?
Your correct 👍 that’s what I said in the vid too 🤷🏼♂️ nothing trustworthy yet although rumours are pointing to an DJI Action 2 Style body.
Hello!
Very useful and informative. I am not an expert and comparing the z5 with the Sony alpha 7 iii. They seem to have very similar specs, except Sony has a bsi cmos sensot with same no of pixels.
Re low light performance, in which situations do you think I will start to notice a meaningful difference between the two cameras?
Thanks and rock on!
this site is amazing: www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm It will show you how the noise to ISO ratio works based on your camera. So put in both cameras and you'll see how they compare in low light scenarios :)
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thank you. I am not very technical person. Do you think the indicated difference will produce an appreciable difference for the end result?
@@donagnello I think there’s a minimal advantage in favour of the Sony.
I am using Z5 for couple of weeks. Upgraded from D7500. Really was confused between Z5 and Z6. Did so much research on the internet(including your vids), ended up with Z5 , since I am mostly doing 1080p videos because of sizes. Sadly Z5 has low fps shooting, which affects my shooting a little bit. But dual card slots are a game changer for me especially cause I had corrupted SD card twice before. Overall I love this camera, it has the most important feature of a camera, image quality is insane.
Hi Narek, thanks for your comment champion. It's a great camera. I too have had SD corrupt - a few times now. The XQD, while extremely expensive is a great addition to the Z6, but the dual slots of the Z5 are epic. Glad I could help.
I'm upgrading from D7500 too and looking at options. As I don't do much sports or wildlife, the Z5 could be the trick. Glad to hear about the image quality.
@@justinanderson4441 sounds like you’re on the right track.
Hi Ralph, thanks for your videos. I'm about to buy this camera and use it as a second camera for macro/super macro night shots. I would probably only use it with manual Laowa lenses, so the idea was to get benefits from this camera's stabilization and especially its focus peaking as I often struggle with focusing. Do you think it's a good idea? How accurate is focus peaking with smaller aperture?
Thanks
It works well as my second body, not primarily for macro though. I think if you have a smaller aperture and put peaking on the most precise setting it’ll help and add to your craft. I can put my macro lens on and give it a test if ya like?
@@RalphMayhewPhotography
I would really appreciate that, thanks.
@@nenadtrimeresurus just have it a go and it worked great. F4.5 on the 105 macro at 1/59 iso 2000 and clear as. Let me know if you want me to try any other settings.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography
Thank you so much for your effort. So, focus peaking works good enough? :) Great, can't wait to try that camera.
@@nenadtrimeresurus yep. I was impressed on the fine setting with macro lens 👍
Hi @Ralph, quick question, I'm upgrading to my 1st Full Frame camera (currently using Sony A6000), would you suggest this to someone to finally jumping to a (affordable) full frame? I only do photoshoots at car shows and our recently built home studio for portrait and themed shoots. Thank you.
If it were me, I think I'd be inclined to go for it :) I think it'll meet your needs, based on what you've shared :)
@@RalphMayhewPhotography the prices for the lenses changed my mind. 😅
@@studio1715ph yep. They’re steep, that’s for sure.
Just switched from Sony A5100 I use for modeling retail mostly clothing and shoes. Mostly outdoor. I’m struggling with darkness. I want bright and crispy photos. Any videos for regulars Gals like me who may not be photographers by profession. Great video
Thanks Ashley. the Z5 struggles in low light. Make sure you've got the latest firmware on it and don't be scared to increase the ISO. Also if you have VR on your lenses, put that on. It's tough when there isn;'t much light and your hand holding. can you use. tripod?
Hi! Can I use uhs-i sd memory cards or do you have to use uhs-ii?
Hey Emily. Thanks for the question. Unfortunately you have to use the UHS-II. have a look at this: nikoncamerarumors.com/best-memory-cards-for-nikon-z5/
I've shot Nikon for years, if I want to go Mirrorless would you recommend the Z50 or Z5?. I'm not a professional so I couldn't justify the price of the Z6ii etc.
Bye the way this video is very informative 👍
I owned the Z50 and have the Z5. Compare the features of each. Decide if you want cropped or full frame and get the one your wallet allows. Both are great.
Great question Eltin. @Leon Fisher covers what I’d say. I prefer a full frame because it gives you more range with photographs. Another consideration is what glass are you using/do you have? If it’s DX glass they’ll work with the Z50 but not really with the Z5. FX glass works with the Z5. Also the Z5 is a larger camera. It’s heavier and more substantial. Feels really good as opposed to the lightness of the Z50. If weight and size is a serious consideration and you need light or want heavy, this can be a helpful distinction. 👍 thanks for the view and comment mate :)
I'm considering trading in my Nikon D7100 for this Z (zed not zee !) 5 with the ftz adapter so I can carry on using my current f mount lenses, what's your opinion on this trade.
Great video
Many thanks
Steve H
Haha thanks Steve. The most controversial thing about the camera is the Z 😉 that’s the trade I made up to a Z6. The Z5 wasn’t available at the time and I wanted video performance too. I think it’s a great idea 👍
Thanks for the videos on the Z5! I'm looking to buy my first mirrorless camera and have been torn between the entry level cameras available (mainly the Z5 and the Canon EOS RP). I've seen multiple videos saying the Z5 is better, but conscious there are more affordable lenses for the Canon. I'll mainly be using it for photography and also want to shoot some astrophotography.. what are your views on how good this camera is for astro? Haven't seen much online about it, but also saw your comment in another video about the on-screen noise during night shots that made me question it. Any views would be great, cheers
G’day Ryan, thanks for the comment. In all honesty if Astro is a primary use you need a camera for the Z5 will frustrate you to insanity. I use it as a play around Astro while my z6 is doing the real work. The Z5 is a great camera but not what you need for Astro.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thanks for the info. I’ll probably only use it for Astro maybe 15% of the time, if that. I’ll mainly use the camera for daylight photos. Is it worth paying the extra in your opinion for the Z6 in this case? How much better is the quality of astro / normal photos on the z6 v z5? (Also assuming Z6 is still fine over Z6ii?)
Z6 would solve all your problems as is remarkably cheaper than the z6ii. If you can afford it the z6ii is amazing but if you need a solid camera for Astro and a great camera for everything else then the z6 is the answer ur after I reckon. Having said that if ur budget only allows for Z5 then u can get by with Astro.
A bunch of Canon RF lenses seem/are indeed more affordable, because they are not Canon L lenses. Most of the Nikon Z lenses are S-line lenses, so that's apples to oranges.
Hi, what did you end up buying? :) did you consider Canon R7? Cheers!
Recently went to my local camera shop and got a Z5 ( used 5k shutter count) and the nikon 70-180 for 1500 . Was hesitiant cause keep hearing lack of BSI is noticable. I h ad the choice of the Z50 or Z5 and the 70180 . Hope i choose correct. Currenlty have a D5600
I reckon you made the right call. Decent price, full frame, very capable camera and people’s critiques of it which are valid are actually quite small or inconsequential for most people.
Hi ralph , what your opinion about z5 autofocus for sport ?
Which sport we talking? It's not great, and the shutter fps speed is limited too. I wouldn't get this for sport. However if its' once in a. while it might be good enough for your needs.
got you man, and your ftz pain 🤣🤣
I know right!! Gah.
How would this camera do in shootings my sons football games? Would the 4.5fps suffice for that type of shooting? Other than that, I’d be using it for strictly stills.
I think you’d be fine. I made this video to help too: ua-cam.com/video/PPS8VxzFYIc/v-deo.htmlsi=wyBrrCpEGwOK1Nhm
Did you have to firmware update that tamron 24-70 g2? Or did it just work. I don't know if I have to buy the tap in console or not.
I have
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 g2
Tamron 150-600 g2
That I want to continue using
I don’t think I had to but I did. I also discovered that some camera shops offer it as a free service. So have an ask around before you get one. I purchased one and used it once. It’s not been a good investment.
yes, I am choosing z5 vs z50 but unable to decide given the pros, cons, and price differnence. which would you choose?
Well the d750 is a full frame which I’d imagine you’re used to shooting on and have fx lenses for so I’d recommend the z5 based just on this and not knowing everything else.
Great video- I’m considering buying this (I have had a D7100 for 10 years and it’s been on the shelf as of late). I agree that I like using the top LCD, but I also just want to shoot my kid/pets/travel etc. Which Nikon Z is for me?
I had a d7100 and then a d7200. Great cameras. I think a z5 or a z50. It’d be worth checking what lenses you have and if any are DX. If so the the z50 would be a the mirrorless counterpart to the d7100 or the z5 would give you more scope to grow but is a full frame. So you may lose the use of some of your lenses :)
Thanks- I do have a mix of FF and DX lenses, so I wouldn’t lose much. I found an open box deal under $900US and I’m set on FF, so I think Z5 is for me. Thanks again!
On 22nd Feb i bought this cam
Awesome. I think you’ll really enjoy it.
11:38 Can I know which third party camera battery will work in this? And is it possible to use my Nikon D3100 Camera's battery in Z5?
Third party batteries don’t work in the z5. I’d buy a new Nikon one for it. Well worth it in the long run.
I did some research and the z5 kept popping up as the best beginner friendly camera and able to produce professional quality pictures
I’d agree with that 👌
Just subscribed! I just picked up this wonderful camera. I steal of a sale price of only 1099 us. Is there a menu setting that can be changed that will prevent the camera from rotating to portrait from landscape? Many times during astrophotography, I want to maintain a landscape orientation, however during tracking of the night sky the camera will change to a portrait picture. I don't want that. Thank you.
Thanks heaps mate.
I think I know what you’re asking: try PLAYBACK MENU - ROTATE TALL - OFF
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thank you for the fast response. I’ll give that a shot
Given I had d750 and wish to explore the mirrorless world, which one (z5 vs z50) is better choice?
I hope you got my response on the other comment :)
Sir iam planing to buy a camera and i am confused between canon r10 and Nikon z5, i mostly want to do wedding events and fashion photography which one I should go for? Does that full frame factor of z5 affects to much?
G’day. The full frame sensor means you’ll get more out of the lenses you buy and will be better in low light which for weddings is important. You’ll also want to think about good lenses to make the most out of your new body.
Sir is nikon z5 good for events photography, such as weddings, birthdays etc etc?
I’d use mine for that. The Z8 is perfect for it but if that’s out of your price range the Z5 will get the job done.
Hi!! I own a jewelry business and would like to improve my pictures. Currently, I am using the D3200 with the macro lens to take pictures. Is the Z5 a good upgrade option?
Yes. For your situation the greatest change is that you’ll move from a crop sensor to full frame so what you’ll get out of your f stop will improve and it’ll be better in low light. Do you shoot with a flash? If not I’d suggest that first with a defused on it.

How do you find the 1080p, I notice a lot of reviews dismiss using it. I've only ever shot in 1080p as my clients have never asked for 4K. I think this maybe because everything I shoot ends up on social media. I know my D750 has good HD but that is because it only shoots HD and is optimized for that. I can't find any comments or reference to the HD on a Z5.
That’s a great question and video idea. I’ll do some research.

I have recently got the Z5. After playing around with the menus I got the camera set up to do auto bracketing at 3 shots at different exposures. I have a problem when taking an ordinary shots on shutter priority they come out at different exposures. I can't figure out how to disable the Auto Bracketing function in order to take regular shots.
I have since figured on how to fix this problem.
Can you share here?
Techart Sony E - Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter (TZE-01 / TZE-02). Use Sony e lenses on the Z5.
You obviously have a lot of Sony glass??
Do you have any issues using the V30 UHS-I sd card on the Z5?
Nope. None 👍
Nice camera but two things. When you put an apsc lens on it the camera enables the crop mode automatically. You can not switch on the FF mode. That is a bit anoying because I have some apsc lenses which can be used in FF mode. Second when you use non cpu lenses like Nikon Ais lenses the IBIS does not work. Or am I missing something?
Both of those disappointments seem to be accurate unfortunately.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I have some others also. Older Sigma lenses like the 150mm macro do not communicate with the camera so no AF. And the biggest problem is that Tamron lenses with vibration control interact badly with the camera IBIS. Seems that both vibration control systems fight each other giving blurry results. Switching off vibration control completely solves the problem but that is not what we want. This is more a Tamron problem I guess but it still sucks. The Z5 is a fine camera with the Z lenses but when you use F mount lenses or third party lenses things get strange.
Would the Z5 be good for portraits or fashion photography / street fashion photography?
Yeah totally. Just make sure you put a good lens on it 👌
I AM Planning to Get Z5 With Tokina 16-28 F2.8 For My Real Estate and Hotel Shoot it's good Combination?
Right Now Using MFT System.
It's a good camera for real estate.
I understand that the only limitation from 4.5 to 11 fps is software, is there no unofficial patch to rewrite the program to shoot 11 fps?
Not that I’ve heard of.
I think turning on power saving mode automatically puts the camera to sleep if you don't touch anything even when the sensor in front of the evf is blocked because I leave it on in my bag for hours sometimes and the battery doesn't even go down barely 1 percent.
That’s a great tip. I’ll give it a go and see if it solves the problem. Thanks man.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I tested it after after I watched your video the camera definitely sleeps after Like 30 seconds of inactivity what's incredible is I once left my camera on for Like 2 days in the bag I forgot to turn it off appearantly but the battery was barely affected it is very power efficienct with power saving on
@@Youmemba great to know. Thanks :)
My husband bought this camera for me as a bday gift. I’m not really sure why, as I’m not a photographer. I think I once mentioned wanting to take more pics of my daughters soccer games/team. Now, that I own it, I want to learn how to use it. I’m finding all the settings, etc, like a foreign language. All I want to do is take crisp, pro looking pics of my daughter & her teammates; action shorts. I need a class, video for sports photography, using this Z5. Can u make one of those videos, please? If not, can you point me in the right direction?
Yeah totally. What lens have you got on the front? If I were you, to start where you are and enjoy it, I'd put the setting mode to S - Shutter priority and then set the shutter priority to around 1000. I'd then put the ISO on auto. You do that by holding the ISO button on top of the camera, and turning the front scroll wheel. Then go into the menu on custom settings and change the auto focus option to continuous focus, which means whatever the little red boxes select, is always in focus as your subject moves. Hopefully that will tie you over, till I can make a vid for you. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I made that video for you. I hope it helps: How To Photograph Your Kids Playing Sport With The Nikon Z5 ua-cam.com/video/PPS8VxzFYIc/v-deo.html

I take street photographs and I am between a z5 or a sony a7iii, which one do you recommend? I have a budget of 1500 dollars or 2000 dollars
Between the two I’d go the z5 for street. You don’t need all that the Sony offers. Le see are cheaper and I think the body might be too 🤔 it’s also which you prefer using as they feel different in the hand. You should head to a shop to have a play.
I know you say that it may be tough for sports but do you think it will get by?
Yeah I reckon. I shot some sports with it and once you get your eye in on where the action is going to be and what shot you want you should be fine 👍
Hey Ralph. Question: if I have an FX lens such as the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR mounted onto Z5 with the FTZ adapter, does this camera gives you an option to go from full frame to crop just to get an extra reach? Very useful for wild life photography. :) thanks!
Yes you can shoot on DX format setting but you’ll sacrifice on the MEgaPixel side of things.
Nr 17.
It takes pictures😉
🧡👍Subscribed. Colorado.
You’re a legend Jules and welcome to the channel.
Im coming off a d3400, all i need to know will this be better then that in every way 😆
Well it’s different. Mega pixels are the same. Here’s a list of the d3400 specs. m.dpreview.com/products/nikon/slrs/nikon_d3400. Compare that to what you’ve seen in my vids and you’ll have your answer 👍
Is the focus peaking really bad on the z5 compared to other cameras ?
I find it fine. I used it today with no issue 🤷🏼♂️
Καλημέρα σας! Σας ακολούθησα 😊. Βέβαια έχω δυσκολία με τα αγγλικά … έχω την D7000 . Και θέλω μια κάμερα ποιο ελαφριά με δυνατότητες . Και θέλω να πάρω και καινούριο φακό . Ήθελα μα ρωτήσω ο φακός απο την D7000 , και ένα φλας που έχω … θα μπορώ να τα βάλω επάνω σε αυτήν την κάμερα ;
If you buy a FTZ adapter you might be able to. It depends of your lenses are full frame adaptable, as d7000 is a crop sensor.
I am still going to purchase it when it come down in price also I wonder when Nikon will release the Nikon Z5ii
Sounds like a plan. Not sure? What changes and improvements would you want to see in the Z5ii?
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Unlimited recording time limit like on the Sony A74 and Panasonic S5. And yes a flip out screen or a screen like on the Panasonic S1H
@@ruff1draft that’d be so good!!
I'm a beginner. I would like to get a camera instead of using my phone, but understanding what camera to get is overwhelmingly confusing. I notice that I gravitate to taking macro photos, mostly of insects and flowers currently, but I also like to take photos of wildlife and landscapes. Being a complete beginner having to learn photography from the beginning, I'd like a camera that is versatile. Is the Nikon Z5 a good option for a beginner? Thank you for your time.
Hello. If it’s within your price bracket yes. But the z50 might be a better option at a cheaper price point. It’s a smaller sensor though.
if a full frame your choice go for Sony A7(3)/A7R(2)
Or apsc model
Canon R7/10.
sony A6400/6600
Fuji XT4.
No nikon mirrosrless to begin with.
If you like DSLR go for Nikon D780 or D750
Is the auto-focus worse than the DSLRs like D810 and D750?
I can't really comment on that, but I'd imagine it would be close to the same 🤷♂️
I have a nikom d7500 and take macro photograpic i want to know if this z5 is better
Do your shoot on high burst mode for macro?
