Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap - Full Game Walkthrough (Nintendo Switch)
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a remake of the original Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, with gameplay reverse engineered from the original Master System code, featuring brand new hand-drawn graphics and musical rearrangements. Set immediately after the events of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, players control an adventurer who, upon defeating the Mecha Dragon, has become afflicted with a curse turning them into a Lizard-Man. The player must journey across the world and defeat all the other dragons in the land in order to return to their human form. As in the original game, players explore various lands, defeating enemies to earn items, such as arrows and fireballs, and money which can be used to purchase new weapons and armor. Over the course of the game, the player gains new animal forms, each with new abilities allowing for additional exploration. These include Lizard-Man, who can spit fire, Mouse-Man, who can cling onto checkerboard-patterned blocks, Piranha-Man, who can swim underwater, Lion-Man, who can perform a vertical slash attack, and Hawk-Man, who can fly through the air.
The game retains the gameplay and level design of the original game, albeit with some enhancements such as instant weapon-toggling and removing the need to acquire charm stones to purchase new equipment. The game also supports passwords from the original game. New features added to the remake include additional difficulty settings, the option to play as a female character named Wonder Girl, hidden bonus areas, and the ability to independently toggle the graphics and audio between modern and retro styles with additional options for visual filters and FM audio.This marks the first time FM audio had been available officially in a Western release of the game.

If you immediately go back into the treasure room where you get the Legendary Sword, you can get about 5k gold from the chest so you can easily afford the Legendary Shield on your way out.

I mean, he's not really a dragon... He's just a fire breathing lizard. His name also literally says "Lizard-Man" if you check it in the gear menu. It's also the weakest form to use, only good thing about it is that you get to crouch to avoid damage and shoot a projectile from both standing and crouched positions to hit enemies from a distance. But speaking overall, Lizard-Man is a safer character to play, provided you always make good space between yourself and your enemies and don't take damage often.

The original game was incredibly tuff for me back in the 90’s I was young and didn’t really understand about HP ATK DEF. It was only till later on when I came back to this game that I understood and started actually buying weapons and armor that the game become more balanced for me.

haha for real, this was one of those games I didnt feel comfortable recording until I played through it twice to make sure I had everything down and I still think I missed the location of a single piece of gear,

@@BreakTimeGaming I think you missed a hidden door in the Old Castle; its at the far right in the brick tube that you come out of; or you can just skip the main entrance and go to the right to find it. Push up when in it and a door opens with a sword or shield for sale in the shop.

i wanna know how the hell i was supposed to know that the tasmanian sword can transform you, how would anyone know that???
Funny thing I noticed. None of the dragons are what we would technically consider to be alive. A robot, a mummy, a zombie, a pirate ghost, a samurai (well technically alive but only exists to follow the hagakure) and a vampire.
As it turns out
I was not supposed to enter the Underground as Mouse-Man
And did not have to spend 30mins dying there
And did not have to pile up so many failed attempts that I got Crystal Shield with the Coins I earned in the meantime

Why is the easy choice just as difficult as normal? This game is so hard and frustrating but, hopefully, this walkthrough will help me. Thank you so much for providing this!

Easy is actually a lot simpler than normal, you get a free potion after a game over + the bosses health goes down a lot faster.

Welcome the the world of pre late 90’s gaming. It wasn’t catered for the mainstream
I just deleted the game, and that was because I got stuck in the underground. I've been months at this stage with mouse man trying to win desperately but nothing helps, I thought of going back to the earlier stages to take advantage of the resources in it but nonetheless the stage It was intractable, and I think I had the right to that because I spent months in one environment with the same enemies without changing, so I made a decision that I gave up on the game, but I said let me search for the gameplay of the game, so I might know how to cross this impossible stage, and then I found your wonderful clip I did not know, frankly, about the secret doors that give you other characters to help you win. I wronged the developers of the game and thought that they designed the stage in an impossible way, but it seems that the game is with the mouse man character only, even the designers of the stage are not able to do it, in the end I would like to say that it is the game It was very beautiful, with a beautiful fighting style and movement, but a little difficult. What I love the most about the game is the design of the stages and the diversity in its environments, the beautiful graphics, as well as the music that cannot be expressed in words. Thank you for your wonderful clip that enabled me From exploring the rest of the game environments, after seeing the rest of the game stages, I felt that I was like a prisoner and went out to see the rest of the world, but despite that, I do not regret deleting the game because even with the other factors that help to win, the game remains very difficult and not of my level, sorry if my English not good.

It was hard finding time to play, and when I would play, I found it difficult to progress. That’s why I’m here too. I feel a sense of completion and satisfaction knowing what happens now.
It’s definitely a hard game, but then again it is a remake from the original so they hard to make games harder for them to appear to be longer games than they were.

What is this MUSIC?! It's so freaking good
It's funny you say that because in my opinion, the music is honestly the weakest part of this whole remake. Not because it's bad music, mind you - just because it just feels so ill-fitting compared to my memories of the original game from my youth. The original game's soundtrack was designed specifically with the Master System's soundboard in mind so it seemed to have more of a confrontational, 'fighting' vibe to it. This version sounds far too laid-back, it almost makes me a little tired and sleepy at times.

I feel bad for the people who never played this on the master system, and will have no idea where half the hidden doors are lol. The one in the sky is so random
I think hidden doors like that are generally just for more experienced players. The one that has a store with the key in it isn't that big of a deal since you can easily get one from the desert pyramid, just before the game's first proper dungeon. If you play well enough, you might not need any of the stuff they offer in the long run.
At least my first time playing with the game was the remake just a few months ago and I beat it just fine. In fact, I think I can't play the game without hard mode turned on. It offers plenty of challenge with tougher enemies and a timer straight from the original arcade prequel to this game and that satisfies me much more than it's standard difficulty.

If im not mistaken I think this is a remake of one of the Monster Boy games, theres even a button you can hit to toggle remake's graphics and the old graphics.
That game is not only a new entry in the Wonder Boy series, but also a sequel to specifically Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap! 😁
Monster Boy is the sequel to Monster World IV, while this is a remake of Monster World II aka Wonder Boy 3. The naming of the games in the west is kind of confusing.
So the dragons trap came first but this reminds you of Monster Boy? That’s like saying Phantom Menace reminds you of Return of the Jedi my son lol

The thing is that im trying to end the game in the less possible time, my best récord with a 100% game is 2 hours 43 min... This walkthrough is completed in 2 hours... Now I get it, cause edition removed the times that you get the money with the Piranha man on the small house above the dungeon.

A few minutes before that spot I got the Tasmanian Sword that lets you shape shift at will. been a while but i think you have to jump and push down and B or A.
Funny how, while the original game was Japanese, this one has a more French vibe to it.
Holy crap good eye. After you left this comment I got looking around and yeah the original game was Japanese. This remake is by Lizardcube which is based in France. So you hit the nail in the head with the French vibes!

I did know Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Curse, as well as most of the Wonder Boy/Monster World series, as well as the sister series that spawned from the original game, Adventure Island, were all developed by a japanese company. Not sure about the guys that developed Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (or as I like to call it, Wonder Boy VII. Yeah, there's seven of these, and it's a chore to understand that when we have 2 games with a 3 in the title, and 2 games with a 4 in the title)

Just about to beat this myself on my channel (with MASSIVE thanks to this video... spent far too long in the underground as Mouse-Man thinking that was where to go next...) but one random question. Is there any point in getting the Gallic Sword when you can access Hu-Man/Girl? You only get that form after you've already beaten the game and ostensibly having done everything else in the game. Other than 100% completion, it seems a little pointless. Haha!

the difficulty spike hit me HARD when I first played this when the Switch launched

It’s been awhile but it’s a sword called The Tasmanian Sword. When you jump and press up and attack (I think that’s the combo) it will change you to the next form in line.

bro at that part i spent so much time trying to not break the blocks and then i realize you needed the magical saber but at the end i succeeded
and also you got any tips on getting the hawk? the samurai level is too hard, what gear did you use to beat it?

So out on the beach I spent like 30 minutes or so just farming the crabs 🦀. They have a decent chance to drop sacks of gold.

The easiest way to farm for gold and ammo is to go back to the chests that have a lot of money in them after reloading your save. Their content is restored so you can keep going to them. The ones in the sphinx (west of the pyramid) and in the intro castle are the best options.

Haha yeah I was still new at UA-cam/editing at the time and should of put a note in the video but I sat there and grinded on the crabs 🦀 until I could buy the gear.
