No worries! Yes, with this amp I use the R121 Cone edge 6 inches back. With my modelling device (DSM Humbolt) I'm using the 421 Cone Edge 6 inches back. It's a pretty comprehensive package they're giving away for free isn't it?!
Excellent demo and tones, love seeing live clips and also thank you for testing the DI out into IR... the DI sounds great with the righ cabinet simulation, very good for direct to PA.

Love this. Tasty playing and great Tones my man. Finally someone actually did a video with it with blues, and a live band situation. Exactly what I wanted to hear from this amp. Thinking of getting the SV20 head and a second hand Zilla 1x12 ported cab for gigs with my band (3 piece Bass/vocal , solid punchy blues Drummer and myself on guitar. Pedalboard all through the front always for me. Always wondered if it can hold its ground in a band situation. Only questions I have really is I guess, when it's at band levels (on full 20 watt mode) do you have volume still to go more if required? Also does it have good bottom end? Most of the 20 watt amps seem to lack the bottom end I require. Probably because my amp I use is a 1973 Fender Bassman Ten Silverface housed in a custom 1x12 combo enclosure with a Eminence Swamp speaker. 🔥 So sounds killer everytime with the almost 3 dimensional sound the Eminence Swamp speaker kicks out. And of course with that essential bottom end behind it 😌 However this is why I'm thinking of a SV20 head and compact Zilla 1x12 cab. The Bassman is a heavy beast and I'm not as keen on taking it out to gigs every time being it a vintage beauty.
Thanks, man! If you have a look at the last video I posted on my channel it's live footage of a band gig using this amp. In that video it's set to 5 watts and it still has enough grunt. Yes it has a good amount of low end. While this is sometimes more about the speaker cab than the amp, I know what you mean that sometimes low wattage things sound too weedy to get over the top of a band with authority. I prefer using a 2x12 as I'm using Greenbacks and they're pretty inefficient. It would be far louder with more efficient drivers like vintage 30's, but also too sharp and immediate for me. I should note that in that last video I posted, the volume is set about 1 o'clock and I'm only using the normal channel. My drive pedal isn't boosting the volume significantly, just the gain. I'm also rolling the bass back to about a quarter on, treble up around 2 o'clock, mid in the middle. That normal channel is quite a bit darker than the bright, you sure as shit wouldn't be rolling the treble UP on the bright channel, ha! So yes, you have a bit of wiggle room volume wise, but it won't be clean volume. For me that's good, it means I can actually use some of the dial that you'd never get to on a bigger amp. If you're playing a function gig and you need funk cleans, this maybe ain't the right amp. My videos come out, out of sync with real time, so I've now had this amp for nearly a year and like it more and more every time I use it. I have a couple of other videos coming out featuring the SV20, over the next few months. One, using every drive pedal I had access to with it and another getting smooth Allman-ish (for want of a better description) tones with it, without using any pedals. I think they nailed it with this amp, looks, tone, weight and the price is very fair if you compare it to boutique offerings using the same type of circuit. I get it's not point to point, but hey I'm not exactly playing gigs worthy of dropping 5 grand on a head! Thanks for the compliment, Ben.

Oddly he refused to sing or play, despite wheeling in a 4x12 and JCM 800 head! Just wanted to sit there on stage and drink his milk. Hi Ben, your video and playing have inspired me to buy an SV20H. Question: can the amp NOT be plugged into a cabinet and go straight through the direct out only?
Cool! Hope you like the amp! You must plug it in to a cabinet, it can't run without some kind of load on it and the cab must match the ohm rating of the output you select for it. You can buy an inexpensive load box or attenuator. A load box would be silent and wouldn't require a cab, whereas an attenuator would still require a cab, but at least you could turn the sucker down! @@GuitarTeleMan No worries! Yes absolutely. I still use the Small Fry for all my gigs with this amp. I also have a Dude Pedal by J Rockett, that I use for gigs going direct to PA with a DSM Humbolt (Pedal board is so small the Small Fry won't fit!). The Dude is a good substitute for the Small Fry if you can't get hold of the Barber pedal. They're not quite the same, but I think you'll get good tones from either one. I'm currently working on a video comparing the Small Fry, The Dude and the Warm Audio Warm Drive (Zendrive). I gotta say, that Small Fry takes some beating for what I want to hear in a drive sound. Ben

Great video, thank you. I am really interested in this amp but hesitant due to the 20w. In your live footage with the band we’re you mic’d up? Also can the DI be used to go into a mixing desk. Im just worried about getting g buried in the mix with a loud drummer, second guitar player and a bass player with no self awareness. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, man! The 20 watts is deceptive. It can be loud, damn loud! If your band is absolutely horrendously loud then maybe you need more watts and you certainly need more if you want to play clean. If clean isn't important and you do what I do and just back your guitar volume off for that, then I would say that if your band is louder than this amp, it's too fucking loud! In my opinion I'd say it's louder than a Hot Rod Deluxe, if I run it in to my 2x12. A Hot Rod Deluxe has more clean headroom, but flat out they're very comparable. The DI can go straight to a desk and is an emulated out, but I'm running the DI in to an IR loader as well. Grab the Sonicake IR loader, it's about 25 quid (there's a video on my channel), I use a free IR by a company called Redwirez. You can find their site easy and download their free pack (They don't even spam you!). Bosh that greenback in the IR loader and it'll sound great and will have only cost you 25 quid for a perfectly mic'd cab in every venue. The videos on my channel playing at home with this amp, are are recorded this way. I wasn't mic'd or DI'd in these clips. The video going up on my channel next Wednesday, is some live footage playing with a band. Again I'm not mic'd or DI'd and there are drums, two other guitar players, harmonica, keys, bass and me. I ran it in 5 watt mode and had more than enough power. For me, running my Barber Burn Unit in to the SV20, is the best drive sound I've ever had. Subjective obviously! Cheers, Ben.
I have two, I run stereo and am blown away every time I plug in.have not giged with it yet. Only issue is the fx loop does not work on these amps I'm getting new fx mod today.
TWO?! That's a bit greedy, ha! Yeh, I'm still really enjoying this amp. What is it that you don't like about the FX loop? I don't use mine and I like the fact you can just turn it off, but I never got great results with it. I find that when you crank the amp output for some higher gain, you drive whatever is in the loop to destruction with the amount of level that gets sent to it. I have 4 different things that will do delay and they all just start to clip horribly.
May you share your delay and reverb settings, I am struggling for my delay and reverb pedals to not sound distant from the initial note and not sound blended
Interesting. I run my delays before the amp, so the levels are dependent on how loud/distorted the amp is. The more you turn up the amp, the more you'd have to turn your delay down as it would become more and more pronounced. My regular delay time is somewhere around 400ms with at least 3 repeats, maybe a barely audible fourth. Hope this helps, Ben.
Thank you! The only overdrive pedal I now own is the Small Fry Burn Unit. I sold a few things to raise some cash, including the Archer. The SFBU is one I'd never sell though and seems to work really well with the 'normal' channel of this amp. Cheers from Weston Super Mare!
I was going to say it was a pity you didn’t time the Sand Bay footage to the tide being in….then suddenly realised I’d forgotten all of the Tidal surge noise!!! It might be an idea to revisit this later, with some more of the amp in a live setting, with some natural Amp distortion. These amps were never really designed as clean pedal platforms and I’m not sure you’ve fully shown why this would be a better system over your previous amp???
Time it for the tide being in?! People have lived their whole lives in Weston Super Mud and never seen the sea! Ha! The Marshall is definitely not running clean though. With the gain around half up, you're getting a good amount of drive already. Probably enough to play lead for a lot of people. I'm not sure you could even play clean in a live gig with this amp actually. By the time you can hear it over a drummer it's already pretty damn distorted. Here I'm just running one drive in to the amp, which is something I struggle to do with the DV. There's a follow up to this video though, which will be in a couple of months, where I say I've bought it...because that definitely hasn't happened yet! Then there's another toward the end of Dec/early Jan where I show you various pedals with it and show the starting tone for each, including jumping the channels together for one of them. Maybe I should A/B the two amps? Oh...and it looks cool!
Hey, There is a way to move from clean tone to crunch and opposite? I really like this amp but i play in a band and want the option to move from clean to crunch in middle of the songs, and there is no way that this thing is impossible right? What do you think? Help
Hi. If you're after a channel switching amp, this isn't the one to go for. It's just one channel. I would say in a band setting it doesn't have enough power to remain clean and be heard over a drummer. It doesn't even have separate gain and volume controls, they are one and the same thing. You just turn up and it distorts. The only way to get a clean sound is to back your guitar volume off. This is perfect for me, because I'm comfortable doing that and play that way through every amp. Also and more importantly, I never play totally clean. If you require a proper clean channel for ultra clean funk/certain styles of country/jazz etc, I'd be looking at a different amp. It's a wonderful classic rock amp, but this lower wattage version of the plexi amp is very much a one trick pony in my opinion. I like it! Cheers, Ben.

I've been using the DI in to an impulse response and it works very nicely. Never had a chance to try the Cab M though, sorry I can't compare the two. Ben.
Ha! I've not tried the JCM800 studio amp. I have tried the JTM45 and thought that was great (comparison video coming eventually!) and different enough to warrant both if you had the cash. If you can afford it, go for it! If not, especially where the jcm 800 style is concerned, I'd say you'd be able to get that sound with this amp and a pedal. The SV20 takes pedals really well and there are a tonne of high gain marshall pedals out there that would work incredibly well with this as a starting point. The JTM45 style studio series offers greater clean headroom, which is something you simply can't achieve with a pedal. You can always make things more dirty, but you can't take it away! Hope that helps?!
Thank you! With emphasis on the 'ish' then maybe! I was running at 16 ohm, at that I think you'd be struggling for totally clean at any reasonable band volume. The normal channel has quite a bit less gain than the bright channel for some reason, so it's possible to dial it in clean, but it's no Fender Twin. There's always going to be just a hint of it creasing up, especially if you're using humbuckers.
Eagle eyes, well spotted! You're not hearing the PS1 at all though. The DI is running in to an IR loader and then in to the PA in that clip. The PS1 is simply muting the cab on-stage. I'm not listening to the cab at all, it's just providing load for the amp there. The other clips were all just a room mic picking up what comes off the cabinet, no funny business with IR's etc!
Ok I see. Is there a difference between DI on back of Marshall and DI on back of PS1? Great sound by the way! EDIT : so refreshing to see live music. Bring a tear to this old man’s eye
@@MrGuitarDad Thanks, very kind! Yes, the output on the back of the SV20H is actually an emulated output, but I'm using an IR on it anyway. The PS1 also has an emulated output, but in my opinion it's savagely bad! The line output from the PS1 is usable but still not great. For some reason on my unit, the output present at the line output on the back of the PS1 is influenced by the attenuation. So basically I'd have to have at least some volume leaking from the cabinet in order to have a usable amount of level coming off the line output to drive the IR, which rather defeats the point in this instance! Both methods will achieve a result using an IR though, I just find this one more practical. The video that went up on my channel this morning, is from a live gig. It's captured with just a room mic and you can hear a whole live song just with the sound coming off my 2x12 cab in the room. It's about as good a representation of my regular sound as I've captured using the SV20H. Thanks again, Ben.
Ok good to know. I have PS1 and SC20H (1960BV). So I would be better off using the DI out instead of DI out on PS1. Silly question but can you use the DI out on back of Marshall at the same time as running PS1?
@@MrGuitarDad Yes, that's what I'm doing here. You could take a line out of both at the same time if you wanted. Run an IR off the PS1's line out and just use the DI from the head direct to PA, as it's technically already an emulated cab. Just be aware that when you turn the 'loudness' up on the head you can end up driving the DI pretty hard, so make sure you don't clip whatever you put it in to.
A flutist. Oh the culture! If can he drink a pint through it in one go I'd be impressed 🤣 The Marshall sounds like I would expect it to sound, gnarly and great for the slide/Les Paul combo. I may be alone in wondering how good a clean tone you can get, as no one buys a Marshall for that, but I do wonder. Years ago I had a Valvestate 40 which was ok clean, and loud as fuqola, as they say in the south of France. Your new lapel mic sounded fine by the way Ben. And I also notice that all of the UA-cam money you earn has you reisiding by the beach on the Cote d'Azur. I can see you hob nobbing with the rich and famous in my minds eye.
Pahahaha! If he's there next time I do this jam I'll challenge him to do that! The cleans are a bit nasal, especially since both my cabs have greenbacks, so there's a lot of mid happening. I've still got the DV for that though. There's also very little in the way of totally clean headroom from the Marshall to be honest, but this is fine for me because I don't really play clean. I think I tried it once in about 2005 and decided I wasn't that good! Yes, Weston Super Mare is like an Asda own brand version of the South of France. I mean sure, the water is brown and full of raw sewage and sure it isn't even there for most of the day and sure we have 11% of the entire country's drug rehab facilities but...it's got 'holiday destination' on its wikipedia page, so... Nah it's not a bad place to live actually. Don't let me ruin the illusion, I'm definitely making far more than 12 quid a month (minus tax) from UA-cam and at least one of my friends must have met a famous person once!

@@graemero5532 Yes, Weston may not be the epicentre for culture (I mean we don't have flautists at our jams!) but it's not bad at all. Particularly the bits around the edges of it. I think you mentioned you were in Glasgow? I have google earthed it before. Some of it looked like a regular modern city with gentrification in full swing, other areas were very obviously 'deprived' as people like to write in news articles. Yours is however, the only city in the world to have given an award for kicking someone in the balls when they were on fire and that's something to be proud of!
Yes, there's a good amount of power! At home without an attenuator it would be WAY too much, but in band situation (loud band) it's possible to just about run out of power even in 20 watt mode. At that point I would say things were unreasonably loud and I'd personally have been asking everyone to turn down before it got to that level, but it's happened. I'd say these amps are the perfect amount of volume for live gigging if you want to drive your amp. Any more and you wouldn't be able to turn it up, any less and you wouldn't have enough without PA support. I think they nailed it, great amps.
I often wonder if they're watching another musician that's filmed themselves playing to an audience of people looking at their phones. Some kind of gig Inception! To be honest, I'm just happy to have a gig.

Thank you! The only overdrive pedal I now own is the Small Fry Burn Unit. I sold a few things to raise some cash, including the Archer. The SFBU is one I'd never sell though and seems to work really well with the 'normal' channel of this amp. Cheers from Weston Super Mare!

I was going to say it was a pity you didn’t time the Sand Bay footage to the tide being in….then suddenly realised I’d forgotten all of the Tidal surge noise!!! It might be an idea to revisit this later, with some more of the amp in a live setting, with some natural Amp distortion. These amps were never really designed as clean pedal platforms and I’m not sure you’ve fully shown why this would be a better system over your previous amp???
Time it for the tide being in?! People have lived their whole lives in Weston Super Mud and never seen the sea! Ha! The Marshall is definitely not running clean though. With the gain around half up, you're getting a good amount of drive already. Probably enough to play lead for a lot of people. I'm not sure you could even play clean in a live gig with this amp actually. By the time you can hear it over a drummer it's already pretty damn distorted. Here I'm just running one drive in to the amp, which is something I struggle to do with the DV. There's a follow up to this video though, which will be in a couple of months, where I say I've bought it...because that definitely hasn't happened yet! Then there's another toward the end of Dec/early Jan where I show you various pedals with it and show the starting tone for each, including jumping the channels together for one of them. Maybe I should A/B the two amps? Oh...and it looks cool!
Hey, There is a way to move from clean tone to crunch and opposite?
I really like this amp but i play in a band and want the option to move from clean to crunch in middle of the songs, and there is no way that this thing is impossible right?
What do you think? Help
Hi. If you're after a channel switching amp, this isn't the one to go for. It's just one channel. I would say in a band setting it doesn't have enough power to remain clean and be heard over a drummer. It doesn't even have separate gain and volume controls, they are one and the same thing. You just turn up and it distorts. The only way to get a clean sound is to back your guitar volume off. This is perfect for me, because I'm comfortable doing that and play that way through every amp. Also and more importantly, I never play totally clean. If you require a proper clean channel for ultra clean funk/certain styles of country/jazz etc, I'd be looking at a different amp. It's a wonderful classic rock amp, but this lower wattage version of the plexi amp is very much a one trick pony in my opinion. I like it! Cheers, Ben.

@@itayshlomay No worries, mate. Yep, you got it. You'd have to use pedals, but your basic tone is always going to be a little bit distorted at any reasonable gigging volume.

For live use do you think you'd recommend the DI out or using something like my Cab M in between?
I've been using the DI in to an impulse response and it works very nicely. Never had a chance to try the Cab M though, sorry I can't compare the two. Ben.

do you think buying the SV20H & the SC20H is overkill? Is there enough tonal difference between the 2 to justify that or... would that just be greedy!
Ha! I've not tried the JCM800 studio amp. I have tried the JTM45 and thought that was great (comparison video coming eventually!) and different enough to warrant both if you had the cash. If you can afford it, go for it! If not, especially where the jcm 800 style is concerned, I'd say you'd be able to get that sound with this amp and a pedal. The SV20 takes pedals really well and there are a tonne of high gain marshall pedals out there that would work incredibly well with this as a starting point. The JTM45 style studio series offers greater clean headroom, which is something you simply can't achieve with a pedal. You can always make things more dirty, but you can't take it away! Thank you! With emphasis on the 'ish' then maybe! I was running at 16 ohm, at that I think you'd be struggling for totally clean at any reasonable band volume. The normal channel has quite a bit less gain than the bright channel for some reason, so it's possible to dial it in clean, but it's no Fender Twin. There's always going to be just a hint of it creasing up, especially if you're using humbuckers.
I spot a PS1. So was it SV20H into PS1 DI out? Did you use the attenuator at all?
Eagle eyes, well spotted! You're not hearing the PS1 at all though. The DI is running in to an IR loader and then in to the PA in that clip. The PS1 is simply muting the cab on-stage. I'm not listening to the cab at all, it's just providing load for the amp there. The other clips were all just a room mic picking up what comes off the cabinet, no funny business with IR's etc!
Ok I see. Is there a difference between DI on back of Marshall and DI on back of PS1? Great sound by the way!

@@MrGuitarDad Thanks, very kind! Yes, the output on the back of the SV20H is actually an emulated output, but I'm using an IR on it anyway. The PS1 also has an emulated output, but in my opinion it's savagely bad! The line output from the PS1 is usable but still not great. For some reason on my unit, the output present at the line output on the back of the PS1 is influenced by the attenuation. So basically I'd have to have at least some volume leaking from the cabinet in order to have a usable amount of level coming off the line output to drive the IR, which rather defeats the point in this instance! Both methods will achieve a result using an IR though, I just find this one more practical. The video that went up on my channel this morning, is from a live gig. It's captured with just a room mic and you can hear a whole live song just with the sound coming off my 2x12 cab in the room. It's about as good a representation of my regular sound as I've captured using the SV20H. Thanks again, Ben.
Ok good to know. I have PS1 and SC20H (1960BV). So I would be better off using the DI out instead of DI out on PS1. Silly question but can you use the DI out on back of Marshall at the same time as running PS1?
@@MrGuitarDad Yes, that's what I'm doing here. You could take a line out of both at the same time if you wanted. Run an IR off the PS1's line out and just use the DI from the head direct to PA, as it's technically already an emulated cab. Just be aware that when you turn the 'loudness' up on the head you can end up driving the DI pretty hard, so make sure you don't clip whatever you put it in to.
A flutist. Oh the culture! If can he drink a pint through it in one go I'd be impressed 🤣 The Marshall sounds like I would expect it to sound, gnarly and great for the slide/Les Paul combo. I may be alone in wondering how good a clean tone you can get, as no one buys a Marshall for that, but I do wonder. Years ago I had a Valvestate 40 which was ok clean, and loud as fuqola, as they say in the south of France. Your new lapel mic sounded fine by the way Ben. And I also notice that all of the UA-cam money you earn has you reisiding by the beach on the Cote d'Azur. I can see you hob nobbing with the rich and famous in my minds eye.
Pahahaha! If he's there next time I do this jam I'll challenge him to do that! The cleans are a bit nasal, especially since both my cabs have greenbacks, so there's a lot of mid happening. I've still got the DV for that though. There's also very little in the way of totally clean headroom from the Marshall to be honest, but this is fine for me because I don't really play clean. I think I tried it once in about 2005 and decided I wasn't that good! Yes, Weston Super Mare is like an Asda own brand version of the South of France. I mean sure, the water is brown and full of raw sewage and sure it isn't even there for most of the day and sure we have 11% of the entire country's drug rehab facilities but...it's got 'holiday destination' on its wikipedia page, so... Nah it's not a bad place to live actually. Don't let me ruin the illusion, I'm definitely making far more than 12 quid a month (minus tax) from UA-cam and at least one of my friends must have met a famous person once!

@@graemero5532 Yes, Weston may not be the epicentre for culture (I mean we don't have flautists at our jams!) but it's not bad at all. Particularly the bits around the edges of it. I think you mentioned you were in Glasgow? I have google earthed it before. Some of it looked like a regular modern city with gentrification in full swing, other areas were very obviously 'deprived' as people like to write in news articles. Yours is however, the only city in the world to have given an award for kicking someone in the balls when they were on fire and that's something to be proud of!
Even at low volumes, these amps are really loud!
Yes, there's a good amount of power! At home without an attenuator it would be WAY too much, but in band situation (loud band) it's possible to just about run out of power even in 20 watt mode. At that point I would say things were unreasonably loud and I'd personally have been asking everyone to turn down before it got to that level, but it's happened. I'd say these amps are the perfect amount of volume for live gigging if you want to drive your amp. Any more and you wouldn't be able to turn it up, any less and you wouldn't have enough without PA support. I think they nailed it, great amps.

I often wonder if they're watching another musician that's filmed themselves playing to an audience of people looking at their phones. Some kind of gig Inception! To be honest, I'm just happy to have a gig.
