Thanks for all the great tips. I just bought a 2018 RAM 2500 4x4 6.7 Cummins. It's my first diesel truck, so I had a lot to learn. I've watched about a dozen of your videos and this week I changed my engine oil and filter, as well as my two air filters and also my two fuel filters. Everything went pretty smooth and I saved myself a lot of cash. Plus, I just like doing things myself, when I can. I appreciate your videos... keep em coming.
I have a '16 Cummins and just can't believe how difficult they made this job. But that tool you used definetly keeps it a cleaner job. Thanks for the video.
I have watched several videos of yours and don't even have a RAM yet, eyeing to buy one in near future. The oil filter change shown here is so clean, even the dealers spill oil here and there during the filter change. I will remember this technique when i get a RAM. Thank you!
Great videos, thanks Marion. Today, I did the first oil change on my 2016 using Geno's cap off tool in conjunction with a 1 gallon zip-lock. Didn't spill a single drop, hallelujah! Original cap off tool from Geno's had bum threads and would not thread on to filter. Thankfully I tried it on the new filter before the oil change. Geno's recognized the problem and immediately sent me a new one (which is fine). They're a good outfit, they even sent me a filter for the inconvenience.
Thanks David, I've since built a holder that really makes it easy to install the geno's cap and take it off while it is in the hole. ua-cam.com/video/1vzo9ubwL5E/v-deo.html
You helped me change my 2500 4x4 this week, i used the zip lock bag in your previous videos, but you've convinced me now to go to Genos website and buy a oil filter cap, Thank you.
On my 2005 5.9 Ram 2500 you come from the bottom, on our 2017 6.7 cummins I have to come in through wheel well which is a PITA. Also oil turns black soon after changing on 6.7 and I blame that on the EGR putting soot back into the engine, as the 5.9 takes a while to turn dark. I will look into that tool from Genos rather than having it drip down and try to clean up with Simple green and a spray of water. But wanted to Thank You for taking the time to do this video! Also liked someones idea of taking wheel off, but will look at removal of catch funnel to make it simpilar like the 5.9.
I did this job yesterday to my 2014 RAM 2500. I found it much easier to remove the tire to do this project. Takes a few more minutes to remove the tire... Time well invested!
Owner of 2013 2500 Dodge Cummins, Thank you Sir for the informative video, going to change my oil in a week or so....You have provided me with insight on the job and what it entails, I have subscribed and look forward to your future videos
Marion, I have the same Cap wrench from Napa, it also fits a little too tight. So today I bought the Lisle 93 MM 15 flute Cap wrench - it fits much better. Slips on and off easily, grabs the same amount of the filter - won't slip. $7.99 and worth it.
Awesome vid, I just bought a 2017 Dodge cummins and I am at 1k miles and I want to change the "break" in oil and a friend that also has a 2017 cummins told me to watch your vid, since he did his oil change in the "blind" after the oil filter problem and more than 2hrs fiddling with the thing, he looked it up, and he found your vid! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Very nicely done. I just placed my order with Genos for the tool, filter and filter cap wrench. 2014 Ram 2500 here. Much appreciated.
Marion, love your video's! At 00:09:15, I lol when you bitched at yourself for not having the socket wrench in the tighten mode! I just bought a 2017 RAM 2500 BHCC 4x4 w/CTD and the 4 speed manual. I love it. I am doing my first oil change today (now). I love my truck and I owe you and your wife dinner next time my wife and I are down LA way... Keep up the good work!
I just came across your video and I just bought me one of these caps from Genos for the oil filter change. I found out about the cap after I just had done my oil change but will have it for the next time and I hope it does make it easier as I was tired of the mess when doing the oil change. I have a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks, The key for me was to have some rags in the hole so the filter was visible and level while screwing the cap on or off. Good luck.It gets easier.
Wow I never thought of doing the oil changes through the wheel well. I did them on my 2012 Ram 3500 Cummins from the top , but had to take out the intake hose and air filter box etc.
Thanks, Yea, you can still do it that way. Ram left a hole in the wheel well to give an alternative to taking the turbo intake apart. Some prefer to do it from the top, some, like me, from the wheel well.. One thing for sure, you won't do it from the bottom. ha
@@JustHelpMeOuT5466 the service manual says to fill the filter. Since the service manual is the vehicular analog to the Bible, yes, the first commandment is: thou shalt prefill thine oil filter.
I just got a 2016 my first new truck ever before was a Ford guy but the 6.0 powerstroke was a nightmare of problems one after another thanks for this video planning on doing this soon not going 15 K I prefer to change it early because of engine break in. This engine is so quite for a diesel loving it so far. Thank You Sir now I can call NAPA and order what I need.
Boy you have to be careful about filters gaskets. If it happens to stick to the filter mating surface might be tough to remove. Make sure you look at the old filter to make sure the gasket comes out with it. I like to clean the engine surface every time. Would be hard to do on the Cummins.
Thank you for this video. Even though my method (no filter cap) works with much cussing and time, the tool will eliminate that. LOL I have an oil filter band wrench which works about as well as the end cap tool. I have changed my oil twice, both times with oil flying just everywhere.
Can't help myself. At 00:15:09 I hope your "big ole Cummins Sticker" from Geno's help you and I pickup chicks! I put mine on my rolling toolbox caddy in the garage. lol. Love your videos, keep them coming!
Thanks for your videos Marion--it was your first video that enabled me to change my own oil in my 2016 RAM Cummins 4x4--you really helped me out on that one. Since then, I've watched some of your other vehicles (i.e. grease point, etc.) and have found them to be a great help. I don't think I've seen one where you do the fuel filters--have you changed those yet? I have also read the comments to your videos--and I like the way you think and handle the nay sayers. Enjoy those golden years my friend--you've certainly earned it. -Eric
I did the second oil change today. Marion's tips are golden, but the job is still a royal pain in the ass. Even getting the new one in past those tubes is a struggle. I built one of Marion's filter holders for this job. It took me a while to get it in place, but never could get it to sit down like it's supposed to. So I gave up on using it. I don't think I'm retarded, just old and impatient! While under the truck, I noticed that the shape of the oil pan has a low area behind the drain plug. It appears to me that it could hold about 1/2 quart. Thus, making it impossible to drain all the oil. I think this might explain why the oil is instantly black after a fresh change. On my old 7.3 Powersroke with 250,000 on it , the oil would stay honey colored for 200-300 miles before turning black. Not that it matters.... Thanks again Colonel!
I thought Chevys were a pain in the behind with their tiny filter, and no room to get your fingers around it. I guess I'll have to invest in a few oil filter sockets now.
If you are a highway mileage driver and use synthetic oil I would probably go to 10,000 but if most of your driving is daily driving I would probably limit my changes to five or six for 6 months and use Dino oil just to save money. But that's just me I'm sure it can go much longer than that. And if you want to do oil samples you can find out exactly. most of the oil samples that I've seen 15000 is too much so that's why I say 10 is a pretty safe number. you'll find lots of different opinions on this and that is just the way I look at it.
Marion, thanks for the videos, youve already answered a lot of my questions. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a 13-15 cummins. Do you have any concerns with the newer trucks? Big purchase for sure so trying to cover my bases.
guy, did you buy yourself a truck? I have a oil change video up also and have the 2014 Ram Cummins dually mega cab Asian tranny 410 gearing Laramie Limited with every option they had available on that package. I also have a whole list of recalls probably about 5 to 10 by now and have had none of them done yet because of the hassle. if you look at a lot of these truck videos the dome lights in front fail mine failed driving it home from the dealer on a 3000 mile trip .they say you can't change the bulb it's a whole unit. not too worried about it just disappointed. the contact paper between the two windows outside .black contact paper starts to wrinkle at the bottom. how cheap is that on a $60,000 truck. bracket on frame which holds front steering axle in place is a recall .I keep checking mine for cracks they want to keep the truck until they get a certified welder in there and I'm not comfortable turning over my truck yet and I also have a large camper to remove . a radio chip that needs to be installed to prevent hacking, airbags two front need to be replaced, newest recall is a water pump issue they said could catch on fire. front tires wear funny chewing off the tread on the Outer Edge passenger side I've already replaced at 25000 miles. rear tires may be good for 10 more and front left driver tire maybe 5 to 10 more although I am hauling a heavy cabover arctic fox camper. not sure if that's causing my funny front end tire wear. as to that dome light Ram should have issued a recall on that just to take care of their customers, on a 2004 Toyota minivan with a cracked Dash the dealer said they would replace the whole dash just to keep Toyota customers happy, a very expensive job they said but I was pretty impressed by the offer and have not yet taken them up on it. I'm only getting 9 to 11 miles per gallon with this setup, I have also holiday heavy gravel trailer at the same time and pretty darn impressed with the power. the front Cab in this vehicle has less space for the driver and passenger than a 1990 Ford E350 van which has the Chinook motorhome built onto to it
+REDWOOD one other thing I forgot to mention is a check engine light has come on in the last 3000 miles and I looked up the code and it has something to do with d e f and I have noticed the def useage is a lot less. which used to be a fill up every 3000 miles and now it seems to use hardly any. I was also sent a letter in the mail saying I need to get this problem fixed as an additional recall before they will re-register my truck again. I try to only go to the pump fill ups as I don't want to deal with 5 1-gallon jugs. 250 per gallon last time at the Pilot Flying J up near Sacramento
Marion, did my first oil change in the Cummins. The oil filter was a pain in the you know what. Getting it out I used the one gallon freezer bag which was a bear to get out that wheel well . Going in I filled with oil and covered with saran wrap that leaked too . Question, do we really have to put oil in the new filter before installing? How bad is it to install new filter with no oil in it?
Many people do it without filling it. The oil pump picks it up quickly This is how I'm doing it now which is a far cry improvement over the plastic method. A really good alternative which is probably equal is to soak the paper in the filter with oil but only leave bout an inch in the bottle of the filter. That way the filter is all but full and the most important part is the paper which is soaked. That's where the oil enters the filter and first builds pressure. What's leaving is going back to the crank case. In this video I showed how much you can tip a full filter over before spilling it. If you soak the paper, (pour some oil in, roll it around but don't top off) you are fine. I'd do the geno's cap just for spillage and keeping trash out. ua-cam.com/video/I7cv-oAw5MY/v-deo.html
as per cummins .... do not prefill any filters .... also save yourself the money and get a long punch and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain out for clean oil filter removal if you get a long enough punch you can get to your filter through the drip plate on your axle slide it through the hole that it drains out of
Where on earth are you coming up with saying Cummins advises against prefilling lube oil filter? I have owned Cummins powered Dodge trucks since 1989 and each and every service manual says to prefill the lube oil filter. Additionally, the service manual says to prefill the spin-on fuel filter with clean Diesel fuel. So, again, cite your source because it is at odds with my (authoritative) sources.
Nice video. Just got my tool from geno's, will be doing my first oil change next weekend on my month old 2016. What camera are you using? really nice quality video.
Thanks very much. It's a Canon S100 (The latest is the S120) however I've got my eye on the Canon Powershot G7X which has a bigger sensor and noticeably sharper.
Lot of people do it, oil quick change places, dealers etc....however the book does say to fill it. You still need something to get it out with oil in it like the geno's cap so you might as well fill it going back on.
normally put them back in the jugs and put it in the garbage and send it to the landfill. I know where some people would have a problem with that, I apologize
Marion Blair I saw some videos people will take them back AutoZone or anywhere where they sell oil , they are supposed to take them in . The guy was in California have you heard anything about it ? I live in Texas
Ha, you won't sucker me into that debate. Valvoline is good for global warming, as they started using recycled motor oil now so you know you are doing your part to save the earth. Good on you. I'man old retired old field polluter. I pour it on the ant hills. From the earth, back to the earth, you know what I mean.
This is so stupid.... You need to go under the truck anyway to drain the oil... What is really the difference to go to the front of the truck and crawl under and grab the filter????It's twice as fast to go on there and get it.....I'm just saying it doesn't keep you from crawling under your truck....so,what's the point??
That's not the issue. There is no access to the filter from underneath the truck. When RAM beefed up the frame in 2013 and up, they block access to the oil filter from under the truck. You literally cannot see the filter from underneath.
Really? That sucks.. I would definitely consider a oil filter relocator.. if that's the case...it's kind of sad because I always felt the Cummins was such a nice engine to change oil on too..
Appreciate the feedback. I'm not good at this, agree. I'm thinking of bringing in some strippers to do my oil changes to make them less boring. What do you think? Would this work better for you? ua-cam.com/video/k7H2x0A1xq8/v-deo.html
Informative video as usual Marion... It surprises me how many smart asses you get in these comments... Your great at the videos 👍... I appreciate you not putting on the stupid ass dance music in the background like a lot of the videos these days... I'm here to learn something, not be blown away by some kids production skills.... Thanks

Thanks again Colonel!
I had to take a pry bar under filter to break out plastic oil drain shelf to get room to get my hands in from bottom side
Kent, I've thought about doing that very thing. Unfortunately the damn filter won't go thru the space between the engine and frame.
Great idea.I think filling the filter is a good idea..... Thanks
That is good because the Ram Factory Service Manual says to fill the filter.

good vid! that filter should be mounted somewhere else. [and, a pity the EPA is attacking Ram for emissions].
I have a 17 2500. Was shocked when I went to change the oil. I think ram could’ve done a little better at making the filter assessable.
Marion,
What is your recommendation for how many miles on truck before you change oil & filter?

great info video but kinda dumb of geno's to have a ring that your finger can't fit through...defeats the purpose....
The ring is still good. If needed, you can hook a chain to it and yank it through the little window with your garden tractor!
LOL!
I thank you so much for this video!!!

The use of a torque wrench with a long handle would make it a little easier to install the filter.
Yea, good idea. I'll try it next oil change.

as per cummins .... do not prefill any filters .... also save yourself the money and get a long punch and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter and let it drain out for clean oil filter removal if you get a long enough punch you can get to your filter through the drip plate on your axle slide it through the hole that it drains out of
Both RAM and Cummins manual says fill it. why not fill it?
I have the Genos oil filter cap also, I take off my front wheel to gain more access and not curse so much.
Where did you get the cap off tool ?

Thankyou
Do you have to reset the computer for oil life?
yes you do it with your arrows on the steering wheel very easy
Do you have to fill the new filter first or can you lube the gasket and put it on and let the engine fill it?
Lot of people do it, oil quick change places, dealers etc....however the book does say to fill it. You still need something to get it out with oil in it like the geno's cap so you might as well fill it going back on.
If I should fill it that cap looks like a great Idea.
watch this video and build this simple little filter holder I designed to make things simple.

The Factory Service Manual says to fill the filter so, yes, you have to fill the filter.
Best power nap I've had in a long time, thanks! Got to be monotonous watching Joy of Painting episodes...lol
Oh, that was an exciting one, wait till you get to the next oil change. ua-cam.com/video/i39z1ZbF8eU/v-deo.html
Were did you purchase the Gino's oil cap?
Geno's Garage. Watch this video. With this tool I built it's a simple job. ua-cam.com/video/1vzo9ubwL5E/v-deo.html
What you do with the oil from the truck?
normally put them back in the jugs and put it in the garbage and send it to the landfill. I know where some people would have a problem with that, I apologize
Marion Blair I saw some videos people will take them back AutoZone or anywhere where they sell oil , they are supposed to take them in . The guy was in California
have you heard anything about it ?
I live in Texas
@@vs-1993 I know that's probably true everywhere but I know for sure Walmart will take it
How soon for first oil change on brand new truck, 3500 RAM Cummins Aisin.
Thanks - Phil
by the book 15K but I did about 2k
talk about a serious design flaw 😂
yea. Cummins don't want to give and neither does RAM so we suffer.
Mobil oil is crap! Valvoline for the W!!
This is the most boring cummins owner ever!
Appreciate the feedback. I'm not good at this, agree. I'm thinking of bringing in some strippers to do my oil changes to make them less boring. What do you think? Would this work better for you? ua-cam.com/video/k7H2x0A1xq8/v-deo.html
Ha, I'll make sure and do that. thanks
Bahhaaahahaha!! Love it. Thanks for your vid though. It’s not flashy but definitely gives me the info I need to tackle the oil change on my 3500
Informative video as usual Marion... It surprises me how many smart asses you get in these comments... Your great at the videos 👍... I appreciate you not putting on the stupid ass dance music in the background like a lot of the videos these days... I'm here to learn something, not be blown away by some kids production skills.... Thanks
