    I have the same (new to me) engine. I'm having trouble gaining that first pull fire up and have to choke it everytime to restart after running . I did notice a very small amount of fuel coming out the float weep hole on the side of the carb. Any ideas? - Thanks.

      Have you by chance taken the carb off and gone through it and rebuilt it w a new kit? Kinda sounds like your needle isn’t sitting properly or something clogging the carb up. Probs the low speed jet is clogged up hence why you always have to choke it to get it to run after it’s already been running

      For sure, no fuel should weep out the side of the carb. This happens because the fuel needle is not seating properly thus not effectively shutting down fuel admission in the carb. You need to replace the fuel needle and the brass well in which the needle is inserted. Finally adjust (bend) the float arm so the float rests levelled with the carb's casing base. Also the float should move up and down freely and not grab on any part of the carb. If it does, that is caused by the float beeing allowed to open too wide (also called excessive float drop-down ). This is adjusted by bending-in the small tab at the end of the float's arm with a pair of needlenose pliers. As to your starting problem, having to choke a warm engine indicates your fuel mixture is too lean. Taking for granted the mixture screw is set right, my bet is there is a hairline crack (possibly not noticeable with the snakes eye) in the top plastic cover or it is warped allowing air to get in and mess up the fuel ratio. Get a new plastic top and follow the screw torque sequence indicated by the numbers stamped next to the screw holes. Do not overtighten the screws : once lightly seated, those should be given half a turn more. Period. Regards !

    Is it worth the money to restore a johnson?

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic 5 місяців тому

      In my area it is. I’m not a huge Johnson Evinrude person myself but a lot of people in my area like them and are still pretty popular. These models aren’t to bad and are relatively easy to do the service on them. But there are a lot of Johnson/evinrudes that I just refuse to touch

      @@timsussenbach5376ahhh I see. Here in Pennsylvania there’s a neighboring Johnson/Evinrude dealer down the street from the shop I work at. They’ve been around since the 70s so the still have a lot of parts to get or I also use a lot of Sierra parts if I can’t find oem

    still bogging

    • @outboardfinatic
      @outboardfinatic 5 місяців тому

      Where ya pick that up at? I’m guessing when I shifted it and gave it some throttle sounds slightly boggy. But without me getting it out on the lake and putting it under load and adjusting on the lake it’s kinda hard cus in a tank I can only rev it so much so I don’t get soaked lol. But w that being said these motors typically make a boggy kinda sound till you actually just open it WOT. But im sure the motor does need some slight adjusting. But till I can do it w a load on the motor this is the best it’s gonna get till the weather clears up
