Hey guys wanted to say thank you for clicking on my channel. I hope my content is sufficient and pleasing for you viewers. What I want to do with this channel is buy and flip outboards and show you guys how to do a lot of the work that is necessary to work on these marine engines. Also just general boating and "how to videos" and a lot of work to different varieties of not only outboards, but inboards and possibly even some jet skis. Would love to hear feedback from you guys and what you guys wanna see when I shoot these videos. As always thank you guys for watching the video

The "drain plugs" you refer to are zincs and need to be replaced
lol they are brass. I’ve never seen a zinc drain plug that wouldn’t even make sense because they would rot out and let’s say it rots out while on the water then your motor would just blow up. Zincs are only used say for like anodes so they rot out the zincs before your outdrive or motor. But all drain plugs are either brass or plastic there’s no such thing as zincs drain plugs
@ wanna bet. The plug is brass with a zinc anode attached so the water inside attacks the zinc and not the engine, heat exchanger and manifolds etc. You are definitely not a mechanic
@@steveusn6852on mercruiser engines they use brass no zincs. I work at a marina and work on these everyday never has there been a zinc drain plug on any of these 3.0,4.3,5.0,5,7 etc Maybe older straight inboards but these mercruisers no. But thanks for the education I always forget everyone on here is a master mechanic lol
@ so you’re telling me that pencil zinc plugs are not a real thing. Just because you use outboard in your name doesn’t make you a master mechanic either
@@steveusn6852 lol I see you did a google research. Again these mercruisers DO NOT use zinc drain plugs idk what so hard to understand they are brass or plastic. I never said I was a master mechanic but I certainly do work at a marina and work on close to 500 plus of these inboards and outboards and jet skis and have certifications through Suzuki and minn kota as of now. I have outboard in my name cus I love outboards lol. I’ll send a pic on here then of my shop and the lot of boats we have to just show you how many I work on. Again I have never seen a zinc drain plug on these I/Os they have all been brass or plastic and I’m not gonna tell people they have to replace brass drain plugs when you don’t. Maybe if this video had zinc plugs then we’d be having a different convo but it dosent so my end still stands. Yours is just a select minuscule amount of motors that run those plugs which this video or my others aren’t those motors. If you were to buy a drain plug rn for this motor from the vendor it would just be a brass plug so idk what else you’d want me to say they don’t have zinc on them and they are just straight brass drain plugs
Great, detailed video. Thanks for posting. You unhooked, blew air through, then added antifreeze to four hoses. What is the function of the two other hoses at the thermostat housing that you didn't disconnect? If I've already run fuel stabilizer/treatment through the fuel system, during the last time I took the boat out, and I'm not changing the oil, I assume that I don't have to run/warm up the engine prior to draining, blowing air, and adding anti-freeze through the four hoses. Also, what diameter Easy Out/thread extractor did you use and what psi do you use to blow out the residual water?
The other 2 hoses go to the bottom of the manifolds. The ones I took off go to the top which will still fill up the whole thing you can remove either or but once you put the hoses back on the hose will just fill with antifreeze from the thermostat housing to the other hoses that you didn’t remove. 2 go to the manifold one goes to the block and one to the outdrive. I would say just fire it up to make sure it runs good. The hot water does help to to drain the water and make sure any crustys get out but it’s not necessary. And honestly I don’t remember the size of the easy out I usually just get something that can wedge to spin out the drain plugs usually drill a hole in the center then jam something in there since it’s just plastic. Psi I’m not sure we have a huge overhead compressor at my work we just kick it on and it atomically pushes out a lot of psi. More the better you’re not gonna hurt anything at all with too much air it’s just gonna help get every drop out and any rocks/debris out of the motor. Hope this helps lmk if ya need anything else
I do the front hoses on the thermostat just so I can also inspect the ball valve or whatever you wanna call it in the housing cus they tend to stick on the springs or just go bad. But not every mercruiser has them but if you do I’d do the hoses i removed and inspect that ball spring
Awesome video thank you, helped me out winterizing my 1st boat I bought 3 months ago 🙏🏼🙌🏻💪🏼
That’s great to hear I’m glad this helped ya out. Stay tuned cus I’ll be making many more vids on I/Os and whatnot as I work at a marina and get so many coming through the ship. Just make sure you throw some gas stabilizer in your fuel tank then and either trim your drive down or I recommend throwing a trash bag over your lower unit so no water gets in or mice unless ofc you get it shrinkwrapped
I'm from Argentina i have Mercury 32 hp don't find ony thing for it
Not gonna lie to you I’ve never heard of a 32 hp outboard before. I’m assuming mercury 30 hp but what do you have a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? Cus I’m editing a video rn on a Mercury 30 efi 4 stroke
Before I put my hoses back on I rub a dab of silicone to the neck where hoses attach. What this does is keep hoses from being such a bear to take off next year.
Yea that’s a great idea. I have always put a tiny bit of 2-4-c grease but silicone is probs better tbh I probs should’ve shown that in this video but wasn’t thinking of it at the time
@@outboardfinaticall good Sir at least people will get the idea I personally use Dow Corning 111 but anything is better than fighting those hoses. Thanks for a great video.
Mind I ask what spark plugs do you use on this? I have similar engine, but can't confirm the year or model. Also, does the tiler have a throttle control to hold throttle? mine is missing the part which looks like semi circle halfway up tiler shaft. Cheers
I have the same engine, what size prop do you use?
@@jdiez6830 not sure what was on this guys. This was a customers boat that was brought to the marina I work at not my personal boat
Is it for sale ? What would the valy=ue be ? It looks new but must be around a 2004.
I sold it awhile ago I believe I got 650 for it if I remember correctly
I should call her 🥴🥴🥴
That isn't water, that engines been to a Diddy party
Lmaooooo he’s kept his mouth shut this whole time he’s just now coming out about what happened there
Good video! But, You jumped over “speedo” and it’s installation. What is it? How is it removed ? How does it reattach?
@@johnzanotti9959 I just figured people would know cus not every one of them has the same speedo. But it’s literally just a barbed and a hose that runs up to the gauge and uses water pressure. But it’s a good point I’ll do that in the next videos. Thanks for the feedback much appreciated
How to winterize if you do not have drain plugs???
As long as we’re talking about 4.3s it’s Impossible to not have drains unless you have the blue knob style which is usually on the newer motors. There will always be way to drain both sides of the block and the manifolds. If there’s no blue drain plugs then a lot of times there will be brass metal ones. Sometimes they don’t have drains on the manifolds and you’ll just have to pull the hose to it off to drain it. But most have drains either under the manifold or in the back of the manifold and always a way to drain both sides of the block. I’ve never ran into any 4.3 I/O that didnt have drain plugs other than the blue knob style and they even have at least 2 drains plugs on them
@@outboardfinatic awesome thank you!
I own a 2020 9.9 merc similar to this one. After 3 seasons the motor will not stay on in idle, only full choke. I took apart the carb and cleaned all the jets and it ran a little better, but it still stalls when the choke is off. any ideas what it could be?
Either fuel lines clogged going to carb, possibly fuel pump going bad. But I have noticed some if the after market floats and needles just something ain’t right with them. Idk if maybe u used a aftermarket carb kit but for some reason the floats don’t sit right and there’s no way to adjust them and the needles don’t seem to set the best. Maybe try an oem kit and adjust your idle mixture slightly and see what happens
No aftermarket kit used yet. I did order one of Amazon with good reviews tho. I will be installing it on Monday and I will let you know what happens. I also ordered a new fuel filter. What sucks is that I only have may 20 hours on this kicker. I must’ve used crappy fuel at one time and it varnished up last winter.
@@sauzaman72gotcha gotcha yea lmk what ya find I just had one motor that was super clean before and I did the whole fuel system went to run it and one of the fuel lines from the engine fitting was clogged so wouldn’t run unless I was choking it. I’ve also have had the inline fuel filter be bad right out of the box. Took me forever to back track it to the brand new filter I just put on. Basically was collapsed out of factory and had similar running issues. Just some things to think about as well
Just wanted to give you an update. I replaced a fuel line going to the carb bc it had a pin hole, but it still stalled on low idle. Took the carb apart again, and it was full of gunk. It must’ve loosened it all up the last time I cleaned it. Cleaned the whole carb and both high idle and low idle jets again and now it purrs like a kitten at low idle. Thanks again!
@@sauzaman72 hahah that’s awesome yea that got me too before. I’m glad we were able to get it figured out have a good one and stay tuned for some more stuff in the future!!!
The drain plug where you can attach a hose can that be bought? I just have a nut and it makes a mess.
They come on the engine like that from factory. My guess is either someone changed yours out or it’s an older model? But I would think you could buy this style drain plug for it I’ll see if I can find a part # for you. But then yea it’s way easier u just put a hose on it and it drains super easy
Bro wear gloves PLEASE 💀
@@evanhunt8563 hahaha you know what’s hilarious is I’m actually really big on wearing gloves and always do and get shit from the other techs lol. But this just so happened to be right when I ran out of gloves and had an order on its way. But yes always wear gloves and keep your body straight at least that’s what I think especially after being around a lot of these older techs who have issues from not simply taking care of their bodies by wearing gloves etc…
Where ya out of? I see a bunch of pa plates.
@@payton2634able I’m in Pa kinda of the Reading area or an hr or so outside of Philly
I believe what you refer to as a fuel filter is in fact a one way valve..
Not sure what your referring to but if your referring to 11:00 in the vid it is a fuel filter. Also called a strainer by Yamaha. In quote from the service manual Yamaha OEM In Line Fuel filter Part number #64624251-02-00 or 646-24251-02-00 can also be used as a remote oil tank inline filter
Hi, your videos are great! I have an 89 5.8L omc cobra. 2 questions for you 1. So I usually drain the block and manifolds of water then fill up the block with antifreeze, then hook up a sub pump to earmuffs on outdrive and it is submerged in a 5 gallon bucket of antifreeze. I then turn on the sub pump and run the boat while it’s sucking up the anitfreeze. Do you think that is sufficient for getting the water system and outdrive protected from freezing in the winter? 2. with your winterizing juice as you call it what is the mixture for that and do you have to fog the engine after that or does that mixture take care of it?
@@MrAirsoft0917 hey there as long as you get all the water out then that would be fine. But you’re already removing all the hoses to be able to blow them out to make sure there’s absolutely no water. At that point I would just say fill from the hoses because honestly that’s the best way to make sure you don’t crack anything. Doing it from a bucket has been probs sufficient enough and probs just been diluting the water a little bit but this way garuntees no issues come spring The mixture is a 6 gallon tank. 1 part 2 stroke oil 1 part fogging oil 1 part stabilizer and then fill the rest with 90 ethanol free gas
@@outboardfinatic ok great, thanks for the help!
some guys "fog" the engine...do you?
I have a 6 gallon tank mixed with fogging oil, 2 stroke oil, gas stabilizer, and 90 ethanol free gas. Run the engines for 15 or so min and the motors fuel system is good to go. Can either run it in the fuel water separator or hook up the tank directly. So yes I do fog the motor just don’t go through each cylinder and spray it. It just mixes in with my “Fuel Treatment”
Always
Negative. If the manifold corrodes through while it's sitting in the winter
@@CoverYourAxe at that point you would already have water in your cylinders from just water circulating through the motor as the water mixes with the exhaust. So we would def have a problem and I would hope someone would know they have a problem especially with an issue like that is pretty easy to know if you have something going wrong with water being able to get into the cylinder. I get what ur saying but they should be filled with antifreeze especially on 4.3 for how easy they can crack
I thought this was the best I have seen on YT but would suggest a few things. Firstly, when replacing impeller put key in with a dab of grease to hold it. Then when pushing housing down turn shaft clockwise. Also before installing lower unit put some grease on drive shaft splines but not on tip of shaft. André in Sydney
@@SoundzAlive1 yea I did do all that I just didn’t really show me doing it in the vid just cus of my camera kept dying and wanted to get the vid done. Good video .. but the music choice (annoying) and volume make it unwatchable unless it's muted.
Yea I’ve had that feedback before. I was still new to all the editing and stuff and how it works through UA-cam. If you watch some of my newer videos it’s a bit better. I appreciate the feedback I hope I corrected it enough and you check out some of my other vids!!
You can't get a true compression reading as there's a decompressor , easy start, built in these motors. The fuel pump also needs to be well primed to work efficiently on starting. Not bad motors though.
Never knew that I appreciate the comment. Thought it was weird when I initially did the compression test but thank you for the feedback!!
what does the teal tube connect to?
@@llsahdowll8800 really nothing tbh. It’s just an overfill for the carb to dump out in the lower cowling of the motor if for some reason the carb started to flood
@@outboardfinatic Thank You So Much!. Just bought my first outboard motor (Mercury 6hp) Im doing an oil change and it smells like gas (is that normal) whats causing it and how can i fix it :(!
@@llsahdowll8800 not normal. More than likely what happened was engine was laying on side with carb full of gas and it leaked in the cylinders and into the oil. Do an oil change and run it and then check the oil and see if you have any gas. I’ve had this happened but when I buy a motor a lot of times they have them laying on the wrong side for a long time

These are hands down some of the toughest motors ever. I have three of them my kids race on hydroplanes. We slap a OMC A direct drive lower unit on them , jet them down and run them at 7200-7400 rpm for 10 minutes a race. One of the motors has 10+ hours running that way. Good video !

I did I just didn’t show me doing it in the video. In the beginning I didn’t because didn’t know if this motor was gonna be junk or not so wanted to just do compression and spark before I even think about cleaning a motor
Nice video, im having a hard time to find the wright position for the timing linkage that goes over the carburator, could someone tell me how it goes ? Thanks
So it can only go one way. One side has and L shape to it that goes in a square cut out slot under the flywheel. It’s where the trigger sits. You’ll see it if you look from the front of the carb under the flywheel. L shape goes up and the zig zag end clips into the choke linkage on the carb. Easiest way I can explain it. It’s actually really easy once ya figure it out
At 14:37 I show where it goes then and the position of it. Easiest way is to insert from the back of the powerhead and through the cut out slot and then clip it in the way I do. Hope this helps
And where and what king of the carb kit are you using?
Sierra 18-7212 or you can use the same part number and convert it over to oem if you want
I just bought same model and I noticed when forward gear is engaged it’s locked in but only in the proper direction. I can turn it counterclockwise and it feels the gear is riding on the clutch is this normal ? It doesn’t do it in reverse it’s locked both ways ..?
100 percent normal. You do not want to keep spinning it tho counterclockwise while it’s in forward. Could mess something up in the gearcase. Reverse locks in and won’t ratchet. But you can always double check your in forward by seeing if it ratchets one way but DO NOT continusly spin it ratcheting
4 stroke is 209cc and the 9.8 2stroke is only 169cc. I have the 2T in a infatable suzumar 350vib and the top speed is 19knots with one person 15 knots with 2 persons and 11 with 3 persons . After that it cant go to plane so with 5 persons which is the legal limit for this in Greece you can travel with 7 knots and the throttle is only 1/4.... In your boat i think 9.8 2 stroke cant reach its maximum rpm 5-6000rpm and for this reason you say it is slow. Maybe your boat is too heavy or you need another propeler. Nice video !!!
@@firestorm766 yea it was def my boat and prop and what not as well. My boat is a test boat for testing the motors so it is light for the boat. Plus from what I remember the prop was a bit mangled

Sierra 18-7212 is the aftermarket kit. Can use this number then to find an oem kit if ya want but I used the Sierra lot
Thank You So Much for all Your Help HAVE A BLESSED DAY
Do you have any or know any videos for powerhead and or water tube removal for this motor?
I don’t if I get one in I’ll try and make a vid on it. I get a lot of motors coming through the shop so just a matter of time
Would you happen to know a parts number for a kit that I can get and make sure I get the right one!?
Just impeller Sierra 18-3017 Complete kit Sierra 18-3517 You can use both part numbers to converge to oem if you want
good work, Im thinking about picking up a 08' Mercury 9.9 4 stroke and attempting to fix with no experience...wanting to see if its a bad idea. "its smoking and oil is getting into lower cylinder, new carburetor it starts and runs for 10 minutes then stops and wont start" think it could be saved? Thanks!
Could be a couple things. Fuel pump took a dump they are mounted on the back of the motor and run off oil pressure, motor was laying on the wrong side and oil got into the cylinders, or valve cover gasket or even hanging a valve open are just some ideas. The part you just don’t know is if something is corroded internally and there’s corrosion holes or something. I made a pretty good video on me doing a 9.9 mercury pro kicker 4 stroke. Same exact motors and had a similar issue but mine was from the motor laying on the wrong side. Check that vid out and lmk if that helps
Do you really think that everyone has all this pumps and airs compressors at home?
@@antraxcar1 no but if you want it done properly and do it by urself you need at least an air compressor. Which I would think just about everyone has if your tryna to do something like this irself. Otherwise you could just pour the antifreeze in by hand and push it with the air compressor. So really the only thing you need is an air compressor. And it is extremely important to use one and blow out all the water
This is for mechanically inclined people. Take yours to a shop
I have a 1985 two-stroke 18 hp outboard that looks very very similar to that one. I’m having problems with the car flooding. It’s getting way too much gas and I can only get the engine to start. If I have it at full throttle I cannot get it to start in neutral do you have any suggestions of what I should do I have tried messing with the air fuel mixture screw, and it doesn’t really do anything because it’s really hard to do because I can’t get the motor to title at all
Your needle isn’t seating or maybe a cracked float in the carb and is full of gas and not floating correctly would be my first 2 guesses
Or it could be the enricher on the side of the carb. If that ball isn’t seating or your gaskets split or what not then excess gas will leak by and flood you
Shift rod measurements from the water pump housing top plate to the center of the hole...short shaft 16-1/2" long 22" sailboat 27-1/2"
Sweet thank you that’ll help make it easier for a lot of people. Thanks for the comment!!!
Two questions...what PSI are you using to blow the hoses? Is that rubber stopper attachment a diy or can you purchase that?
Not sure on the psi tbh. We have a big shop one that’s up in the air but believe I got the hose attachment from the snap on truck but I’m sure you can get other after market ones for it
You just want enough psi where you hear and see all the water come out then your good
Good one, Thanks!
Question- how do you remove the lower cowl? Is this possible without pulling the power head or the bracket? Whats the correct way to do this? Mine is broken from falling over.
@@masonbabb5255 should be able to without pulling the powerhead. Believe in these but don’t hold me to it cus I don’t have a motor rn to go look at. I have the same Tohatsu 9.8A four stroke. Just got it out of a garage that it had been sitting in for years. Threw in a new impeller, oils, 9 pitch prop, plugs, and an entirely new fuel system (including carb and pump) for about $400 in total. Put it onto the 1436 flat bottom Jon... and it took me (215 lbs), my son and daughter (90 lbs each), my 55lb thrust trolling motor, and 100Ah Lithium battery... plus some gear... up to a little over 18mph. Should do mid-20s with just me in there. I bet that if the new 9.8C (fuel injected version) that just came out... really does have more torque... it would be an amazing motor. Especially with 30% better fuel economy. My 9.8A has a max burn rate of 1gal per hour according to the manual. Which means I am getting at worst 18mpg. Most likely more.
Another great video! Good audio too
Hello, I have a problem selecting neutral. In neutral, my propeller must be free? If I adjust it so that my selector neutral is set with a free propeller, I can no longer shift into reverse. Thanks for your advice.
In neutral it should spin freely. If you took the lower unit off you have to make sure your engine is set to reverse and your lower unit is set to reverse. It will be out of an adjustment every time if you don’t do it this way.
