Vestiare BANS Fast Fashion

  • Vestiaire Collective, a leading online marketplace for pre-owned luxury fashion, has recently implemented a groundbreaking ban on fast fashion items. This strategic move aligns with the growing global consciousness towards sustainable and ethical fashion choices.
However, I do not necessarily think that this policy change is entirely rooted in their pursuit of sustainability in fashion.
To be honest fashion, consumption is very difficult to make sustainable or good for the environment. We all collectively have to make an effort to do better for the planet in many ways but I don’t think they necessarily got this one right

I've always viewed VC in the same category as TheRealReal, so I totally understand them not wanting fast fashion on their site, besides the ethical reasons that they have. I'm a reseller and I personally don't pick up fast fashion to resell unless it's a really cute Zara piece, it's just not worth my time for the small amount I'd make for it. I occasionally take some fast fashion items to buy/sell/trade stores (I refuse to ever pick up Shein). I used to love fast fashion when I was younger, but ethically I try and do my part now and never purchase it. The majority of my clothing is second hand, and that makes me feel like I'm doing my part.

I don’t understand how people buying Gucci and Chanel cannot afford cloths outside of fast fashion. There are brands like JCrew, Brooks Brothers, Reformation, Department Store Brands, etc. It’s a lack of prioritization. I don’t have any Chanel but I also haven’t bought fast fashion in a decade because ethically made cloths and the environment are more important than buying purses to fake being rich and stylish. I think this is a message that VCs client base needs to hear.

Great perspective! But there are all types that shop on these platforms. A person buying a vintage LV

The problem with this is that people aren’t necessarily getting rid of fast fashion things because they are worn out. Look at the resale of luxury things. This will not stop people from getting rid of things they don’t want.

Yes, they’re going to eventually declutter and if we’re lucky the discarded items will end up at the thrift store- but way more likely to end up back in those piles from their campaign

Thank you for this video, soonas I saw the VC ad, it didn't sit well with me. My main gripe is if a fast fashion item has been purchased, is it better for it to be thrown away? I think reselling it is a better choice if someone is willing to buy.

I totally agree! There has to be an avenue to rehome it - and loudly removing themselves to me is not helpful

I wear these tank tops to the gym sometimes, super basic ones I get on Amazon for maybe five bucks each. And sometimes the tag says Made In Bangladesh, which is where my family is from. And I immediately think-that could so easily be me, sitting in a garment factory, sewing this tank top. I don't have an opinion on Vestiare per se, I've never bought or sold from them. Their language seems very virtue signaling to me in a way I find both condescending and hypocritical but then again maybe that's just me feeling defensive about my own part in the problem?

I have a part in the problem too, we all do. And it’s not easy- nor will it be solved by any one of us alone. In times like these where rent is +$2k shaming people for not wanting to spend $100 or more on a top isn’t useful.
And yes it gave very much ‘virtue signaling’ I get why it was done, they just didn’t have to be so obnoxious about it

To be clear, I do still believe in the value of the mission and I do recommend shopping and selling through VC. I think they are a great resource for vintage in particular. And it's a great option to shop directly from private sellers from all over the globe.

Interesting video, thank you! I do agree that the ban feels more about an item’s value on the resale market than genuine concern over ‘fast fashion’. I am from the UK and I’m disappointed that many of those brands included here represent some of the main stores available which are actually affordable to most people, especially for those items which have heavy, everyday use. That’s not to say that they are worn a couple of times and then thrown away - I have things in my wardrobe from the so-called fast fashion brands which are pretty classic in style, are several years old and still going strong. Even designer items can be ‘fast fashion’ if they are bought with the intention of only wearing for a season, it will still contribute to landfill eventually. And there are still resale /reuse opportunities for the non-designer clothes!

My black jumpsuit that I wear all the time I purchased in 2020 and it's from F21! Some of my very favorite and most worn pieces are fast fashion - while my most expensive pieces (especially the clothing) sit in the back of my closet for years on end.
At this stage in my life, it just doesn't make sense for me to spend a lot of money on clothing. I've done the calculations and it's totally not worth it for me. I'm buying less, and buying preloved as much as possible - but I'm not buying $400 jeans $1000 sneakers or $500 on a tshirt from The Row!

Don’t know, to me it wasn’t harsh at all. Of course fast fashion is bad. And the more you buy from those companies, the more they’ll flourish and continue they shitty work, along with people who continue to throw things away. Did you know Zara has a new collection EVERY WEEK and tons of their clothes end up in landfills? And yet influencers and other people rave about the brand. I try not to buy from those and only buy when I know I’ll keep it. And no, a pair of leggings will not change anything 😅 it’s about the bigger picture. Humans are just dumb and indifferent, and that’s the problem.

Agree So of my fast fashion finds I’ve worn for +5 years. Shoes even longer than that. To get them at low moderation is t the worst thing. But it’s wasteful on all fronts for us to continually buy things we don’t need and won’t use.

Interesting. I have workout gear from Old Navy, because I cannot justify the prices of Lululemon, and the items have lasted several years. They've never pilled like many of my friends Lulus have. Seems to me that VC is more focused on branding and feel that Old Navy, etc. tarnishes it. They can try and shame me all they want, but I'm not spending $$$$ on an item of clothing when Old Navy, et al. wears the same and lasts the same. I just don't see a quality difference in stitching and material in cheap items vs more mid range. So much so, I haven't bought new clothes that aren't Costco jammies in years. Quality just isn't there to justify it.
Mandatory fees should always be included in the list price. It annoys me too.

I will not spend real money on work out or lounge clothes! I just can’t square the circle . If they pill, so be it- see through? Just wear at home- holes in seams? Sew it back together. But I WILL NOT PAY SHOE MONEY on sweat/sleep clothes.

Karen Millen USED TO BE deemed higher-end, good quality clothing, as did Coast, but they were both acquired by boohoo, as was Debenhams, Warehouse, Oasis and others. Boohoo as we know, flies the flag and is one of the leaders in fast fashion and their culture, value, ethos and quality (or lack of) will now bleed into those once revered, higher esteemed brands, hence why they appear on VC’s list.
