It's been a long time coming, but thanks to the incredible CrashTeamEditor (CTR Level Editor Tool) and the sheer creativity of the community, talented creators have pushed the boundaries of what's possible in Crash Team Racing. These custom tracks are fantastic, bringing fresh and exciting experiences to the game like never before, including custom made ports of levels from other games.

The craziest part is that it currently restricts you to one texture for the whole map. You can change the colors and stuff like that, but there's only one texture in all of these
Yeah that’s a good point - I noticed that and yet they’re doing so well with some of the environments in terms of having it look different. Very impressed.
This is awesome! I never thought that we'd see some custom levels in CTR! Obviously we've had custom level mods in the Crash and Spyro games for a while now so it's silly that I never thought about this being a possibility as well lol. I'm personally very excited to see a few things with this:
1.) tracks from later games getting recreated in classic CTR (especially tracks from Nitro Kart and the new tracks that were added as DLC for CTR Nitro Fueled)
2.) more Mario Kart levels getting recreated, especially iconic ones like Coconut Mall or any version of Rainbow Road
3.) tracks from other iconic kart racers getting added as well, like Diddy Kong Racing, etc.
4.) more Spyro themed levels being created, and even potentially a recreation of the Spyro themed track from Nitro Fueled
I'll definitely keep following the development of this project and see how the custom levels continue to evolve and get better over time, this is genuinely so exciting to see! It's always nice when the fan base is able to breathe new life into the old classics and make something new, and I love how everyone are still keeping these games alive after literal decades.

Yeah, the first version of the track editor released in mid-December, and they're making regular updates. Prior to that there was only 1 custom track. Now there are 34. Turbo pads were added in mid-January, custom music was figured out later, apparently ghost data is a thing now, and of course the track makers are figuring out how to do more with the current tools.
Also thanks for the shoutout. That was a nice surprise.
Oh, and some tracks have checkpoint issues, as you discovered on Royal Ruins. In that one, you just have to jump from the left side of the track at the end. Jumping over the finish line is a more common one.
The first track gives me serious Lofty Castle vibes indeed. I think it’s a pretty cool concept, especially once it’s finalized. And the second one is neat too. Reminds me a bit of the Parking Lot battle arena.
Another idea I think is cool is custom weapons and powerups in CTR and even introduce new characters that should’ve been in the game like Koala Kong and Dr. N. Brio and Komodo Moe and Fasty.
Custom characters are already being worked on but much like the custom tracks there are still some limitations creators are working around, but the early results so far have been really cool to see!

This is the first time I'm seeing this mod, so please excuse me for not knowing a lot, but is this "custom" as in "create your own" maps? Can you load your own textures and models into the editor or is it solely a collection of maps that the mod developers created?
These levels have been created by a range of creators, and yes you can make your own! But it’s not easy and there’s a lot of restrictions currently.
Check the website in the description - it goes over the process and provides some guidance on how to get started.

How do you guys do these levels do you guys model it from scratch in a 3d software?

Oh yeah, coding rival AI needs to be done within the PS1 engine......
That’s why I think it’s better to just wait until the decomp is done. Then there won’t be the same concerns with textures and all that. But still, as a start this is incredible.
