When I was 16, my friend's dad was the head salesman at the Volkswagon/Audi dealership. He had a 1983 Pontiac Acadian Diesel with a manual transmission buried under boxes in his garage. It had an Isuzu engine with 65 horsepower. I bought it for $500 and it ran like a clock. Felt like a super car to me.
I just discovered Hoovies Garage yesterday. You are better than my two favorite shows: Jay Lenos Garage and Grand Tour (Top Gear). I think you accomplish this because you are passionate about cars, very funny, and just plain real. This is a great channel. Thank you!
Maybe a mild swear, but not an f-bomb. It’s like hearing Doug Demuro say the f-bomb in his early videos; you’re not ready for it and laugh when it happens lol!
wow, I have watching for a couple years now and came here to see the genesis of the channel. was really surprised to hear Hoovie drop the "MF" bomb. lol
I LOVE it! I'll be 42 in two days. Bought my first Mercedes when I was 19; a 1987 300SDL. Since then, I've owned several W126 300SD sedans. I still have my last one, a 1984 model with 752K miles (original engine lasted up until 726K) I've always thought it would be cool to have a manual in the SD. I am so envious! I've owned a couple of 240D manuals, but an SD manual!?!?!? Just freakin' awesome! Great-looking car, too!
Sweet, I got an 82 240D with a 300 Turbo Diesel manual 4 speed. Love, love, love it and the mileage is much better if you shift her at lower rpm's. Enjoy, I plan to get 500 K out of her if not more, half way there now.
I found your channel last night really late and it was the lambo videos and your videos got me hooked with The Wizard too it is hilarious lol so today Im going to start at the beginning of your channel my man! Continue your great work 🙏💯
Wowwowwowwow!!!!! That is beautiful. Wow that car that interior that 5 SPEED MANUAL!!!! You did something I haven't seen done on an American market Merc. And sir..you are smart!
I'll need to watch this in detail later. Great video so far. I followed the link from the Peachparts boards. I've been following your story since you bought the car. It's a beautiful machine. Reminds me of my old 1985 300SD, which was almost as nice as your 300SD.
Now these were the days, back when Hoovie had real purpose behind his madness. He had focus, determination and a perfect outcome to all the hard work and money tossed to the wind...
4-speed box? You might find it pays you to get a 5-speed from Europe. Plenty of 300Ds were sold with manual boxes, they were pretty much a staple taxi in lots of parts of Europe and the box is almost unbreakable. A friend has a 300TD that has gone well past 850,000 miles (it had done 850,000 when it came off the road to have a body resto 5 years ago so I would say it is now well over 900,000 miles) and the 5-speed manual box has been untouched other than routine oil changes. The Mercedes manual boxes were so legendarily strong because they were directly related to those used in commercial vehicles (vans and some small lorries) and they were totally unstressed when used in cars. The 5-speed box is a newer generation of box than the 4-speed so it is much less clunky to use than the notoriously mechanical 4-speed, and, as it has more ratios they are better spaced than those in the 4-speed which has to be able to take the car from rest up to the (highly-illegal in the US and most of the rest of the world) speeds that need to be maintained to prevent the vehicle getting run over on the unlimited sections of German Autobahn. You'll also find that the car is much more economical, and much more restful to drive on the highway as well as accelerating through the gears much better which has always been somewhat of a joke on diesel Mercedes, even with the 3.0 litre diesel...
gosportjamie We have roads up to 85mph, but typically 75mph in the southern USA. Roads are only slow on the west and east coasts were democrats control things.
It’s an okay swap, some conversions are done better than others, but generally speaking, the OM617 Turbo produces a little too much torque for the 2nd gear synchromesh on the 4-speed manuals to handle, due to the nature of the Turbo spooling up and down whilst you shift. I’d rather get the conversion kit from “Mercedes Diesel 4X4” for a Ford T5 manual transmission.
Oh my goodness Hoovies! I believed I was the ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD with a manual 300SD! Mine is an '83, Midnight Blue with Gray interior, original bundt-cake wheels. It sports a 1977 240D transmission. I purchased it already superbly converted in 2006. Maybe you already know this: avoid depressing the clutch while using cruise control!! The speedometer/odometer pickup is completely homemade. How did you set up yours? Like you say, it's a whole lot of fun to drive! I also have a 1986 300SDL, which is a completely different slant-6 powertrain species.
Don Malo These old mercedes diesels get like 30mpg+ and are fully mechanical engines. Most reliable engines ever. Also super simple to convert to biodiesel.
Actually the US got plenty of diesels with manual transmissions from Mercedes. The W115 and W123 240D for instance came standard with a 4-speed manual everywhere, including in the US. The 300D/300D Turbodiesel and 300CD/300CD Turbodiesels, however, were automatic only (in Europe the 300D could be had with a manual, but the Turbodiesels were always A/T). A handful of manual transmission 300SL's R129s even made it to your shores in the early '90s! ;-) I used to own a 1985 300SE W126, and a manual transmission was available for it (standard on the 280S, 280SE (SEL), 260SE and of course the 300SE (SEL)), BUT thankfully mine had the 4-speed automatic. Yes, it's a slow-shifting transmission and bumpy from 1st to 2nd, but I always felt it suited the character of the car. Also, Mercedes manuals from this time period were vague and imprecise - you cannot have fun with such rubbery manuals, in my opinion. If I were to buy a Mercedes, any Mercedes, I would always go for the automatic. Mercedes' makes excellent automatic transmissions and they suit the car better than a manual. Just my opinion, of course. Still, that's a nice project you undertook there! :)
Back in the 80s gray market days I came across many gas engine W126 S-Classe's with 5 spd manuals. No diesel S class in Europe though. Still, it seems to me that using that tranny, linkage, drive shaft etc. would be the easiest transplant into a 300SD.
A few W116 and W126 Turbodiesels were re-imported back to Germany by enthusiasts. Two days ago I actually saw a 300SD Turbodiesel W126 in my city (Munich, Germany). Personally, I'd prefer the automatic in that car, but I can understand the appeal of a manual in a W126 S-Class, especially the somewhat relaxed diesel models. :)
You are not supposed to rev diesel engine like a petrol engine. These engine are inherently designed to be shifted at lower RPMs where the driver can enjoy low-end torque.
This is a cool car. I have the w123 240d with a manual 4 speed. The one thing I wish is to have a 5 speed overdrive manual transmission. I love driving my 4 speed manual and I keep up with traffic.
kermitefrog64 Bought a 240d last week with the auto. It runs 85mph. Its slow but it has about average acceleration compared to how I normally drive anyways. It shifted poorly but changing the fluid and adding Lucas additives made it shift like new again.
I've got your euro bumpers in California, look up superturbodiesel if you get a chance, great mbz diesel community. I spent years in a w126 300sd, moved up to the 190d turbo and e320 cdi, but dreams of the past left me with a w126 coupe, om606, and a 5 speed. if I leave them in a dark room long enough they should become the Sunday driver I want.
I just got a 300CE SportLine Lorinser in the same condition as this car total cream puff interior exterior with 198k for $800!!! I swear I Thought I was gonna get robbed or something… but it actually happened car goes 120 butter smooth with cold Ac blowing. Brand new Michelin’s on AMG monoblocks.. I love it but I don’t have room for all of them.
Mr. Hoover, I found your channel by chance a few days ago, I must have watched at least a dozen videos by now, so I figured, why not go back to the start and have a go from the beginning? Thanks for such a great "stupid" YT channel, I look forward to seeing how you started and how you progressed to where you are now.
So do you still have it? I'm doing the same conversion on mine. I'm also turning the pump up and I have propane injection which definitely wakes it up a bit. From what I understand the 7.5mm modified pump and a hx30 turbo is pretty impressive with the om617.
Manual is totally cool, but the automatic Mercedes transmissions behind the om617a are some of the best ever. Reliable, robust and they are not that hard to dial in. Also, how do you modify the hole in a pilot bushing to make it smaller?
Hmm, so it a lack of an intercooler or high pressure fuel lines or both that causes a ~3 liter diesel to have about 150HP? A modern 2L diesel has that power. Thanks for your wisdom
With healthy engine and turbo, you can raise the power considerably without sacrificing logevity of the engine or mpg. Less restrictive exhaust, intercooler and tweaking the pump and wastegate can give you loads of power and torque.
The new Chevy Cruze Diesel in the USA has a 1.6L and is 137HP@3.75K with 240 pound feet torque @2K. Really nice power for a diesel, basically on par with a 1.6L DI gas engine non-turbo! Almost seems like a typo the power is that good. I'm more into electric power, but diesels have come a long way. But their MPG benefit to gas-Atkinson cycle hybrids (and full EVs) are hard to see. Thanks
The tricky part with these conversions is getting the right flywheel. A lot of people try to use a 240D donor, but it's not right. The OM617 with a stick was never sold in North America. You need the part from a Euro car.
The 300D you pulled the tranny from was a 123 series, right? I had two 123s, '81 and '82 240D's. They did come with sticks (as did the later 190s, I'm pretty sure, diesel and gasoline).
Wow, thats amazing! I cant imagine such an undertaking.

Massive respect for the manual W126 diesel. In my opinion the W126 in all it's forms was car of the century. It did everything absolutely perfectly.

Ya, W126 is also my favorite looking Mercedes (along with the 2 door coupe versions).
And was remarkably light weight for its size. Todays cars are so heavy.
