Lynn, My heart truly goes out to you. I do still have my adult son, but I have close to losing him many times. It is a terrible fear, vand the anxiety can be overtaking. I have a number of very close friends who have lost children. Even though I sat with them & did everything possible, I did not experience the death of my child. I did not walk in their shoes.

I absolutely love makeup, I love wearing makeup, I love experimenting with makeup, and I prefer the way I look in makeup... and all of the women I'm friends with just don't. They think I'm a bit crazy for "doing my face" before I leave the house and sometimes it makes me self-conscious, but at the same time I sometimes look at them and think, "Just a little lipstick, bronzer, etc. would make a world of difference". To each their own, I guess. (Oh... and I love glitter on my eyelids, because they're really hooded and adding that little bit of light makes my eyes pop.)

I know that they most give sample sizes, which are hardly worth the value they ascribe to those gifts, but I still fall for them. In fairness though, I've discovered some of my favorite products across all categories from those gifts, and have also enjoyed the smaller sizes for when I've traveled. But.. It would save them millions of dollars in returns and allow us to try multiple products with less risk. But I also found that sometimes that sample card of a cream blush ends up being better than the stick blush. It's usually more emollient. But at least I can figure out which color works best.

I lost my mom this year. I've always loved makeup, but I think I really fell into buying products to help make me feel better. I realized what I was doing, and I've really realized what colors/tones look best on me. I overhauled my collection to my taste now. I'm a sahm to a 2yr old and 4yr old. Before they wake up, I love sitting at my vanity and put my makeup on. I live in middle of nowhere Minnesota. I feel like I'm overly done up a lot... but as a part of my therapy, putting on makeup really does help me feel better about myself. Also, a ton of foundations or base products lean yellow on me (cool, pink undertone). A lavender powder has helped cut the yellow (if you don't want to mix a blue color corrector or if you don't have time but love the formula/finish, etc). Love your videos, Jen!

I got rid of sooo many items -- some that I truly love -- because they are "fantasy self" buys. Colorful eyeshadows, shadows with glitter, things I bought because they were new, things I just don't wear. I will pass many of them along to friends who will enjoy them. Sometimes when I am decluttering and feel regret about the money I have spent, I remind myself that the money is gone, and keeping things in my collection unworn does not change that. I put waterproof mascara over regular mascara as a second coat and it seals everything in reasonable well like if my eyes watered a bit I’d be fine. It’s easier to remove too because the regular mascara under it buffers and so it’s not totally stuck on your lashes.

I do this, too! I use a regular mascara first that separates and defines my lashes. Then I use a waterproof mascara that volumises and lengthens, and it seals it all in. My lashes are long, and I have very oily skin, so I have to powder my undereyes *and* my browbone (my lashes can brush the skin on my browbones area). But with the powdering and the waterproof mascara as the top layer, I rarely get any kind of smudging. Bonus: my mascara holds up no matter the weather I'm out in!

Jen, at 72 years young I plead guilty of several of these offenses🤪🤪 I can’t tell you how many times I have tried a type of lipstick, blush, powder, etc and been dissatisfied….only to realize I had been down that same road (different brand) a few times before. I do think we need to know what really works for and enhances us. Makeup is still so much fun to try, but I too now often decide that something very similar is already in my stash and not to fall for a review, packaging, hype, etc. Thanks for all you do for this community, but mostly for your kind way and honesty.🥰💄

I was so excited to watch the reviews on products to try to figure out what would work for me and help me save money by not making spending mistakes. At that time I never realized how easily influenced I could be. I thought if someone I trusted said something was good then I would agree with them no doubt. It took time and trial and error to learn what my own preferences are and what works for me in my lifestyle. I realize now that making mistakes is part of that journey. For example I’ve come to learn I’m always gonna be a matte or natural finish girl, the dewy stuff is just not for me no matter how much it’s trending. And with backups I totally get what you’re saying. I only get backups on powder, mascara, and eyeliner that I know for certain I’m going to use up.

Great video, Jen! 😇👍💕 I can totally relate to your comment about being aware of wearing more makeup than most women in general (especially those my age) in any given setting, as I live in a small town as well, & I DEFINITELY fit that description. I pretty much always wear a full face, often including iridescent highlighter & 3 or more colors of eyeshadow with sparkly duo-chromes on my lids, whether it’s going to Walmart or to church on Sunday! ✨🤩✨But what’s interesting is that I will frequently get compliments on my makeup from both random strangers as well as people I know, & I noticed I don’t get weird looks so much these days, as I think most people are used to seeing me with the whole nine yards & they kinda’ expect it. A friend at church told me once that she could never get away with wearing colorful or sparkly makeup, but that mine always looked fabulous & I pull it off brilliantly because it fits my artistic & confident personality. I had never really considered that aspect, as I said she could certainly wear colorful makeup as much as the next person if she so desired, but she explained that by her having a more reserved personality, it would make her feel uncomfortable. I guess mindset really can play more of a role in our relationship with makeup & the choices we make regarding what we purchase/wear. 🤔💭 (But I do love wearing some neutrals too, so don’t worry!) 😉 I’m bad about purchasing backups & then I forget that I have them, & then purchase even more (especially when it comes to favorite foundation products online that often go out of stock in my shade), so I’ll end-up with tons of excess that take forever to use. Nothing like having memory like a sieve! 😂🤣😁

Watching this video hit me with so many layers of guilt, lol. My obsession is eyeshadow. I feel the need to buy every new palette that comes out, even though I don't actually wear it. Most of the time, by the time I've finished my base makeup (which I really enjoy doing), I don't have the time or energy to deal with eyeshadow. Plus, I feel like eyeshadow makes me look too done up. I can rock a bold red lip or bright blush, but the second I add eyeshadow, it just feels like too much. I love opening the palettes and looking at them, and swatching, but actually using them seems so time-consuming and out of sync with the kind of look I usually go for.

I’ve wasted sooo much money on stuff that’s not used. My daughter took some of it, but a lot ended up in the trash and it’s sad how much I’ve wasted. I’ve realized that I have a VERY warm olive skin tone, and even though cool tones are very trendy, popular and beautiful, they just don’t work for me. So I can no longer buy a cool toned palette no matter what. All cool tones look grey on me and do not look like the pan at all. I’ve learned!! I’m done buying eyeshadow palettes and blushes except in my personal very specific shades now! I’m learning about color analysis and my “personal palette” of favorite shades that actually look good on me is very small, but I’m excited about how much money I’m going to save, and I know that I will always look good from now on. 😊

If you use an oil cleanser to remove your makeup, waterproof mascara isn’t hard to remove- maybe an extra 5 seconds of massaging the oil into the lashes. I’ve permanently switched to waterproof mascara because in the summer there’s no regular formula I’ve found that doesn’t smudge on the sunscreen plus sweat mess 3-4 hours into the day. Plus I can go swimming in it! I use the Clinique waterproof mascara if anyone wants a recommendation.

For me, I find that cool based fuchsia leaning blue purple toned blushes are some of the only ones that will appear to be a true, cool pink on my very cool toned, fair skin tone. I can relate to buying so called cool toned pink blushes and lipsticks that look very peach! It’s really interesting how one person can think something is cool toned but on me, it’s straight up orange! The NYX Butter Blush in My Butta Half and RMS Beauty blush in Bermuda Rose look very bright in the pan but they blend out so beautifully and give that cool toned tone pop! I love these two! I have a few other cool toned more neutral blushes, but those tend to lean towards mauve, instead of that pure, bright pink that we all crave sometimes!
Blush is a lot more complicated than I imagined- but I finally think I have found cool toned options for a neutral look, a bright pop of pure color or a natural look. In each category I have at least a few! Loving the blush life lately!

Love this... it's so much about learning to know yourself and your own preferences/needs and just being true to that. Though it may take a lot of sampling before you figure it out 😁 Speaking of sampling, one thing I have liked about samples is that it's helpful to really get an idea of how long it takes to use something up. A sample bottle of perfume or shampoo or cleanser isn't a single 'serving'. For me it helped me understand how long it would reasonably take me to use up a full sized product, and helped with reducing the impulse to buy another and another...

I so regret buying Natasha Denona Glam when I passed through the US on my way to live in Mexico. I believe I would like the I Need a Nude palette, but the Glam palette isn't for me. I went into Sephora and bought a bunch of stuff in December 2022 that influencers were raving about AND I DIDN'T EVEN OPEN IT AND LOOK AT IT BEFORE I BOUGHT IT!!! That's a sign of being too heavily "influenced". I regret it so much because I've only used it once and I have no way to even sell it or pass it along. Ugh!

I regret the glam too, but I have repotted my favourite shades and got rid of the rest now I use it much more. I really dislike the darker shimmers and that yellow gold and I was forcing myself to use them because I felt guilty.

I completely agree with you on everything - I made all the mistakes: backups that have expired; sale items I would not pay FP on; hyped/FOMO items that didn’t suit me; etc. Great advice!

Same here…I extended my no buy into August. Feels great! Using my already purchased treasures and re~discovering what I have. Some skin care had expired which is another realization of the ridiculous waste of money🤦🏻‍♀️I’m really enjoying my older pretty palettes.

I’ve been buying makeup of higher quality, and have less quantity overall. ❤
