    He was like a ghost on the CCTV footage, slowly walking alone, disposing of the last pieces of his life. Seems he wanted to disappear, as if he'd never even existed. Really stirs up the existential dread in me, imagining this man's mindset at the time.

      I suppose he wanted to die somewhere beautiful and away from home, rather than be a prisoner among the fluorescent lights and vinyl tiles of a hospital, and that he wanted peace rather than the moaning or fighting of relatives. Who knows, maybe he wasn't leaving his offspring any inheritance and they wanted to get their claws on him so he could be declared incompetent.

      Web Rookie I don't remember if anyone suggested it in the documentary, but it's also possible that he didn't want his family to lose his pension when he died.
      You know, this has got me thinking, there must be people who in all probability would have died of old age, but for whom no death certificate exists.

    • @Derna1804
      @Derna1804 6 років тому +47

      +Web Rookie My mother worked for an insurance company. They noticed that one Polish gentleman who retired with an American corporate pension back to Poland had lived an exceptionally long time, so they sent a P.I. to check it out. It turns out that the family had preserved his finger in formaldehyde because he was supposed to stamp a letter with his fingerprint to keep the pension active. I understand people need money, but it only takes a few cases of fraud to bring an entire pension fund to its knees. As time goes on, some organizations end up paying more retirees than current employees, that's why most corporations use investment plans now instead of pension funds. We see entire nations brought down by generous pay and pensions for government employees. And think about it, it's only in a democracy where you can have a political faction bribe an entire sector of society for votes by creating more and more government jobs. The productive workers have to pay more taxes to keep it going, and before you know it, if you're not in the government then you're like a second class citizen.

    I had a friend that had cancer,it was incurable and he could feel himself declining to a point he wasn't going to be able to take care of himself,he was suffering and didn't want his wife to have to watch him suffer and waste away. He is not... God blessed us with life, our spirit is loaned to us from the almighty God and to take upon us the right and appointment of God is not ours to take. Jesus Christ is the truth and scoffers and mockers will bear their shame when the revelation occurs and it will, believe me, it will. BC and AD is a peculiar thing to mark our time if Christ is indeed make believe... Only he's not. He is very real and this deed spits in the face of God and is cowardice and dishonor.

    I do not understand why the police claim that the address the man gave is supposedly an empty lot in Vienna. Everywhere I looked on the Internet it is always claimed that the address turned out to be an empty lot. I can say with 100% certainty that this is FALSE. I am from Vienna and the address Peter Bergmann gave (Ainstettersn 15, 4472, Vienna, Austria) is just a bogus address. NOT AN EMPTY LOT. First of all the zip code is completely wrong, as all zip codes in Vienna start with a 1 (for ex 1130). Second, Ainstettersn is not a street or any place, as the word "Ainstettersn" is simply NOT German. It is reminiscent of what German looks and sounds like, but it is not an actual word. In particular the letters "rsn" are to my knowledge never used in that order in the German language, and all addresses I have ever seen are in one way or another related to /predicated on the German language, in particular in Vienna.
    Ainstettersn sounds to my ears like a foreigner trying to imitate German, like it is often done in movies, etc. Maybe Peter Bergmann wanted to pretend to be German/Austrian? In any case I hope this comment helps put an end to this false notion of the "empty lot".

    • @Lapislazuli1
      @Lapislazuli1 5 років тому +35

      It would definitely be interesting to see the original reservation form, because some of it can be due to unclear writing and then someone who doesn't know German deciphering it. "Ainstettnersn" could indicate several places in Austria. There is a place called Amstetten, and there is one called Artstetten, the street names Amstettner Straße or Artstettner Straße both exist in several places. The abbreviation Str. for Straße is quite common, then it is AmstettnerStr, add some unclear writing and there you have it. So to me it looks like a well-informed try to invent an Austrian address for someone who is not familiar with Austrian addresses. Which makes it believable that he could have been Austrian indeed.

Walk ins from the street became rare but in this case we ask for an Id to cofirm the identity and make even a copy of it for the duration of the stay. One never knows what could happen. It's a very personal feeling, knowing you are dieing. Not everyone has close family and finding yourself at this point, I can understand his possible desire to just leave. The paper at the cafe was probably his check list. He left, clearing up his life so no one else had to. He left, thinking he was alone, leaving the world without causing upset for anyone. There was no way he could have known his body would be washed ashore, instead of out to sea. RIP sir, you do matter.

      This story says that He wrote 8 letters which could have been letters to his family members to tell them of his plan and say goodbye (we don’t know). I think, with how public this case has always been, they do know who he is and never came forward. He was very sick and in tremendous pain. He didn’t want to continue to waste away from cancer and treatments / medication so he took his life. He did it anonymously so that his family could still receive his insurance money. Because if you die of suicide and the insurance companies are aware of this- your family won’t get the money. He avoided any identification so that his family could get the insurance money. Just a theory of course, but a good one. Especially since he had advanced cancer and would have been awful pain at every moment with no medications in his body. He was hoping to leave this world and not be identified and likely his family / friends understood that and kept quiet as well. Maybe even out of respect of his wishes as well.

I hope whoever his family/friends are they knew of his intentions perhaps via the letters and know it was his choice to end his life as he chose.

      I don’t find it creepy at all. I feel sad about how he must have been feeling. In pain, knowing that he could not go through more pain -- knowing that this was going to be the end of his life, how horrible it must have been for him to drown, inhaling water -- it just must have been horrible for him. The problem with me -- is I can feel it -- I can put myself in his shoes and almost feel what he was going through. I never say that “I can’t imagine how someone is feeling” -- just tell me the person’s story and I can feel it. It’s hard to describe. Probably why I live in a constant state of depression. I take it personally when people are suffering -- even if I don’t know them. I know -- it sounds crazy.

      That's who I thought of too. Despite so many people here saying "just a guy who wanted to go out on his own terms", he put far too much painstaking cunning into not wanting to be identified for that scenario to make much sense to me. I get the overwhelming feeling this guy was involved in some sinister shit at some point in his life.

    This reminds me of an old friend who was in his late 80's and found out he had bone cancer. After it became severely painful not even smoking marijuana or taking strong pain killers could help his pain. But this time his daughter wants to put him on hospice but he refused and ran away in his old camper van to the mountains where there's plenty of bears and wolves high up.
    ~~ He left a note behind saying he plans on putting a few steaks on his chest before taking an over dose of pain pills that would kill him then hopes the wolves would eat him up along with the steaks never to be found !!
    ~~He never followed through and he passed away alone in hospice one winter night.
