    Thanks for sharing your white butterfly, defense tools!
    As im a beginner gardener, I was overjoyed to see that finally- in my 2nd year of gardening, I had crops growing!!! What a feeling to see green, lush crops growing large n tall.
    Almost as soon as I was proud, these little holes started appearing on my cabbage leaves.
    I'd work countless hours after dark, searching for those grubs. And, the satisfaction of removing a handful and feeding them to my chickens was outstanding! But, night after night, no matter what I did or how many I removed- there were dozens more holes and lightening of the leaves and stalk =•《
    I mean, I sunk to chasing them around the greenhouse and catching the butterfly by hand (feeding it to my chicks). I probably looked like a mad woman running around clapping my hands high n low, mashing and cussing! Nothing seemed to have any affect. What to do? Thank goodness for u- tube! Unfortunately, I am pretty much a container gardener so using your method would mean I'd have to cut the screen into several pieces in order to use them on each container or plant. Which is just fine. However, last year we put up a very, very large sun screen cloth in our greenhouse. Kind of a netting/screen cloth. Shortly after we had it up, something started cutting holes in the cloth. Not sure if its from moths, mice, birds? No idea. So, thats my question for you- do u find anything can chew holes in the screen/netting you use? We didn't even make it 1, single year without it tearing, ripping and becoming shredded b4 it could really do its job. Im afraid the same thing will take over with these, what do u think? And do u hv any tested & tried methods for keeping that from shredding?
    Thanks for sharing, listening and giving back to this you tube community of gardeners!!

    I am using birds nests ($15 from Ship Loads) on my patch and so far all is well. next time I will get an insect net. For some reason, the white butterfly does not attack the red Russian kale which is not protected yet. Aphids are a problem.
    To correct the memory shape on the conduct a hot air for a hair drier works well.

    Question - What is the difference between the net you are using and the bird netting? Also we are in Louth Bay SA. It's still very warm/hot. When is it a good time to get the seedlings in for winter crops?

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  5 років тому +2

      The crop net is much finer weave than bird net. Bird net is usually 5 -10mm openings, whereas crop net is around 1mm only! Probably best to wait another month if it's still hot were you are, but for the best advice ask a local! Otherwise you could use shad cloth which will help cool them as well.

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  5 років тому +4

      Rain will penetrate these nets perfectly well. Also you don't need to remove them when hand watering either - the spray goes through with no problems. The only time you really need to remove it is at a harvest...or maybe to weed.

    I rather enjoy the cabbage white butterfly and other butterfly species. I know it's a pest for a lot of gardener's growing brassica's but it's one of the very few butterfly species in my area that will actually hangout in a butterfly garden all day provided with an ample supply of nectar and host plants. That is one reason I just use the barrier system. I can leave out some plants for butterfly and hummingbird moths in my garden to lay eggs on and protect my crops. Best of both worlds.

      Maybe caterpillars of the type that hide in the soil around the plant during the day. Water area around the plant well and loosen the soil at the same time...if there, they will often float on the water. Otherwise go out and check at night!

      They apparently can find their way through the forest! It really is only about 500m to open farmland on closest side so not enough insulation I guess :-(. Keeps many other pests at minimum though!

    Hello Sir I have a question, I have a thinner mesh net so very small holes but I get these eggs being layed ON THE NET and I have found two cattapillers INSIDE my net on my lettuce leafs how do I stop the eggs being layed on the nets and from them getting passed my net I assume they lay eggs and then the eggs hatch in the netting but the catapillas hatch on the INSIDE of my net?

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  4 роки тому

      Maybe - not certain, but just wondering - the finer mesh makes for a better egg laying surface? A more open mesh may not be so inviting for them to lay eggs on? Something to try and compare...
