      Good idea, but do remember please that the control of the butterflies requires multiple strategies. Here is something else I found recently about their control and management:

    If you have WASPS around the garden, they will hunt the caterpillars, aphids and other bad guys. Just be careful and do not get on the wasps' way. They are wonderful predators and helpers in the garden!

      Sorry about my slow reply. Good suggestion. Encouraging predator insects is always a good idea

      I have seen one wasp this year (July 2024) so far. Something has gone "wrong" with the insect population this year, many farmers are saying, and from my limited experience it's true. In the previous two years we had wasps absolutely all over some willow which was growing by a shed where we have a bench and sit. They were after the aphids on there - this year, no aphids and no wasps!

    We tried the decoys recently and they were useless. We actually had more trouble with the cabbage butterflies than we ever had before. We're trying Upland Cress this time.

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  5 років тому +1

      Thank you for you comment and contributing to the conversation.
      The decoys should only be used as one method within a much broader strategy. On their own, their impact is minimised. In the video I mention nets and egg shells.
      Please let me know how the Upland Cress goes, it would be great to add this to the list also.

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  5 років тому +3

      Yep, it does look like that, but they tend not to lay eggs in the same position as others. Also, this strategy on its own, often is not enough - it is just one to use with others.

    how about a follow up on the success, or not, of deterring the cabbage moth. I tried the fake ones unsuccessfully but perhaps did not use enough as had only one at either end of a two metre row.

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  5 років тому

      Thank you for your comment. I have found the 'fake' moths effective, but not on their own. I always have them in the garden when growing such things as cabbage and broccoli, but I also grow plants that attract the moth. For example Landcress (Barbarea vulgaris) is proven to attract the moth in order to lay their eggs ........ worth trying.
      Hope this helps :)

    Why not just tie a short piece of white sheet (3"x 1") on end of a stick at different levels? The wind can blow this fabric and mimic the fluttering of another white butterfly defending its property.

    • @iCultivate1

      I have not seen that idea, but worth a try. I would like to hear from yourself or others if this has worked. For me, I have actually reverted to using net as a barrier in out new vegetable garden. Nasturtiums are also a great plan to attract the moths away elsewhere :) This short video is an example: ua-cam.com/users/shortsJahN8w7zgWQ

    Does the egg shell work have a load of them 😀

  • @jeanlaikan8400
    @jeanlaikan8400 4 роки тому +2

    I just found your video. I have 2 questions about egg shells.
    What attract the butterflies? 1) Is it the space they provide or the smell (egg white for example)
    2) During watering, water will fill the eggshells. Is this an issue? Thanks

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  4 роки тому

      Thank you for your questions. My understanding is that it is the colour that attracts the butterflies, and don’t be concerned about the water.
      Having said this, on their own their effectiveness is minimal, the egg shells are just one additional strategy to use as well as the others - together they are more effective. Sometimes, depending on the conditions, the most effective strategy has been to use of nets.
      Good luck 😄

      On their own, I would agree. But the intention is that this is only one strategy to use in combination with numerous others. Whatever you choose to do, I hope it works, they can absolutely decimate a crop!

    The teratorial thing dosnt seem right I had 5 or so flying around each other and they still layed eggs

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  4 роки тому

      I have also observed similar behaviour occasionally - but they are territorial with regards to where they lay their eggs. unfortunately, this doesn't mean you wont get an infestation on a plant. My recommendation is to use as many deterrents as possible - I currently have kale covered with nets for this purpose.

    Do you clean the eggshells, or do you put them straight out after using?

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  4 роки тому +1

      Good question. They should be cleaned - boiling or microwave is a god option. The reason for this is the potential fro them to carry the Salmonella bacteria which can be quite dangerous.
      Hope this is helpful :)

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  5 років тому

      They can raise the pH of the soil, so it really depends on the condition of your soil.
      Usually though, 3 or 4 times a year would suffice.
      Hope this is helpful 😄

    But, but, but.... What about ways to KILL it???

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  3 роки тому

      If you can prevent them from laying their eggs, there is no need to kill them. But if they do lay and you get the caterpillars, there are a few safe ways to deal with them, but you do need to visit your local nursery. They will probably have some options, one which includes the treatment with a spray that contains bacteria that kill the caterpillar.
      Hope this helps.
