  • Why do I love flats and prefolds so much?
    Because they’re multipurpose! They do so much more than an insert can.
    They’re affordable and can be used long after your cloth diapering journey is over

    Now in my 6th month of diapering journey, ive started to use my flats a lot more than my inserts alone. I have some microfiber inserts but from geffen ( i think) i use them layered with a flat for night time ocassionally. I notice I switch back and forth, from just prefolds to just flats and adding a hemp to them for naps and night time. I tend to leave my all in ones for the diaper bag.

    I think your channel is my home. Thank you for keeping all the kid screaming, breaks, and realness in. Are you sure you’re not filming at my house? 😂😂👍🏻 you’re my kind of mom. I can’t get into the Pinterest worthy channels as much since I am probably watching while my monsters sleep or while chasing them naked through the house. Even my husband who was half listening said “oh my gosh typical kids.” 😂 You’ve earned two new fans and my husband doesn’t like ANYTHING I am into so it’s an honor coming from him. Edited to add: also cloth diapering mom that has a few flats, and prefolds, but never gave my flats the time they deserved in my stash! I am committed to change that with this kid and use my flats more. I too have been over the stupid microfiber. Started using hemp and bamboo such a game changer! Or prefolds in my pockets. I have a love/hate relationship with my pockets and will probably be reaching for my covers and flats or prefolds more with incoming January baby.

      I think most people start off thinking pockets or aios will be best because they are "easier" then figure out they don't hold up to leaks as well on older babies or get annoyed stuffing them and end up preferring cover systems. I was that way too now I can't imagine wasting money on a pocket or aio they are so annoying to only use once and not for more than an hour or so and take forever to get cleaned properly on top of it. And I had all aios to start on my oldest.

    Hello Jay..your videos are really helpful..I am due this July and I would like to start my journey with cloth diapering from new born. So I would like to start with pre-folds with nappy cover for just born until few months and later planning for pocket diapers. So my doubt is for how many hours pre-folds stay dry for new born babies. I know it depends on the babies frequency but I would like to know approximately for how many hours do I need to change.

    I’m probably the only person that likes gerber Prefolds
    They work good enough for me in a pocket diaper or laying on top
    FYI for a 6 month old baby
    If I need a boost I just wrap one of the microfiber inserts it came with
    But I hardly ever do that, I fold 2 prefolds

      @Angela Conn Oh yeah, they've been washed at least 100 times by now lol. Flats are useless to me. She soakes them in 30 mins. I have resorted to disposables and cloth at night time (I put a disposable on then a cloth over it. She leaks through the disposables by themselves too!) That works most nights, but it's hard to get the fit right when doing that, so it some times leaks due to improper fit. Why is this so difficult lolol???

    Weird question. How do you sanitize prefolds and flats to be used for kitchen unpaper towels? I know that they get clean in the wash, but I don't know, some of mine have stains and to use as like a napkin, I don't know. I guess I know they were pooped on? We have separate flannel prints for unpaper towels for this reason, but when we're out of diapers I'd love to use them as an unpaper towel. I guess bleach them for the transition? The sanitize setting? Only use stained ones as a swiffer head?

      Alexis Arroyo hemp and bamboo are a lot more absorbent than cotton but absorb very slowly. I pair them with a microfiber insert that isn’t super absorbent but does soak up pee very quickly. Hope this helps! I’ve never used cotton but I would think they’d work similar to microfiber. Double inserts are key! Microfiber with a hemp or bamboo work perfect.

  • @EdnaBlossoms310
    @EdnaBlossoms310 3 роки тому +1

    You stuff your pre fold and flats inside the pocket diaper or on top? If I get hemp pre fold I will need an absorber like microfiber on top right? How do I go about it if I’m using diaper covers? 😅

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  3 роки тому

      Stuff inside the pocket.
      You *could* lay ontop of the pocket as long as it’s not a microfiber insert.
      While hemp is a slower absorber, it’s not as slow as people think. Cloth diaper podcast filmed some videos on that. I want to do some absorbency videos like that too.
      It *does matter if your child is a flooder though. If your child pees huge amounts all at once then you’ll need to put natural fibers against the skin. Pockets don’t work for flooders because it slows down the absorption. I made a video a few weeks ago called “here’s why your pocket diapers are leaking”. That has some great info on why pockets don’t work for flooders

      I have collected a lot of mama koala because of the prints lol. The elastics aren’t tight and I’m already having some relax after 6-8months of use. I have a few with really weak snaps. So while the prints are cute.. the quality is.... eh.
      I hate saying that because I’ve been a brand rep and the owner is the sweetest person in the world. She’s genuinely so giving and nice. But I have a hard time recommending a product if it’s not good quality.
      I’ll talk more about Mama Koala in a comparison video:

    What is your advice for a daytime heavy wetters? I have been doing a microfiber insert with either a hemp or bamboo insert underneath with our pocket diapers. I have to use pocket diapers or else my baby girl gets a rash from the wetness. My daughter is 4 months old. And she is leaking out of all of her diapers and it pisses me off! Lol. I heard nothing but good about fst, so I tried those out and it is so much worse! I'm at a total loss. Idk what to do anymore. I don't want to spend anymore money on diaper bc nothing seems to be working. Our wash routine is a nightmare, which is why I really wanted fst to work out bc I HATE washing microfiber. But alas, they don't work for heavy wetters. Ughhh

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 років тому +2

      For a heavy wetter I’d definitely ditch the microfiber and FSTs.
      I mean you could always double up or triple up on FSTs but that’s bulky. I did it for the flats and hand washing challenge and the diapers were huge.
      I definitely prefer things like hemp for heavy wetters. It’s my go to because it’s just something that has worked for me when trouble shooting. I love keeping hemp inserts around as boosters. I never use them by themselves though.
      For me, flats with hemp inserts are my go-to day time choice. I like diaper rite bamboo flats & nickis bamboo flats. I’ve heard imagine bamboo flats are great too.
      I’m a bargain shopper so I like stalking the swaps for good deals or putting out an ISO post. I really love stretchy flats. I actually just pad fold them lol. Sometimes you can find people selling them for cheap on the swap pages. There’s a flats,Fitteds, Woolies BST page on Facebook. I’ve gotten a few good deals there, but stretchy flats are a luxury item.
      I like green mountain diapers muslin flats with a hemp insert.
      I like smart bottoms hemp prefolds.
      Geffen hemp inserts & thirsties hemp inserts are among my favorite hemp inserts to use as boosters. They have a great resale and are good quality.
      I also like bamboo prefolds with hemp inserts. Right now I’ve been really liking the imagine bamboo prefold.
      Heavy wetter is such a hard term to work around because depending on how many ounces your baby pees different things will work. Good quality absorbency is definitely worth the investment though. You can find them on them on the swaps for 50-70% of retail prices. Swaps are pretty slow so it’s a buyers market right now.
      I hope you’re able to find something that works ❤️ The trial and error of cloth really sucks

    what are your favorite flat? more for heavy wetter. flour sac towles are defiantly not enough absorablncy lol

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 років тому +1

      I agree, fst’s aren’t great for heavy wetters.i guess it depends on how many ounces of absorbency you need.
      I find that muslin flats are very absorbent. They’re equivalent to a medium cotton prefold. Green mountain diapers has a great muslin flat! Nickis diapers also has a great affordable muslin flat.
      Idk the science of oz they absorb but I’d say muslin flats absorb about the same amount as a bamboo/cotton flat. I have nickis bamboo flats and diaper rite bamboo flats. I have the size large and love them. They’re decently affordable. I’ve heard good things about imagine bamboo flats but they cost a few more dollars than nickis and diaper rite. I haven’t tried them. Lainas Life says the Imagine bamboo flats are much softer than nickis bamboo flats.
      Stretchy flats and hemp flats are great for heavy wetters.
      I personally love my stretchy flats the most. You can diy them or buy them from work at home moms. I have a diy video. That’s the cheapest way to have them in your stash OR go to the Woolies, flats, Fitteds BST on Facebook.
      Stretchy flats are pricey but they’re luxurious and absorbent.There are tons of brands!
      Fruit of the Womb, Flat Bottoms, Clarry Harry, Nickies Knickers, Wold Coconut Wear, and a few more that I can’t think of right now.
      Geffen has hemp flats. They’re fleece flat (fladdle) is your best bet for Geffens hemp flats: the geffen jersey flat shrinks too much..

    is it fine to use bamboo wrapped in flats for overnight?

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 років тому +1

      Yes, of course. Every baby needs different absorbency so it might be trial and error to see if that works for you. I use flats at night!

    So do prefolds loose absorbency with dryer? I know some inserts do

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  3 роки тому

      Really the only insert that actually loses absorbency over time is microfiber. It sheds micro plastics in the wash.
      Bamboo prefolds can shrink, but don’t lose absorbency. They just get smaller lol. I made a video a few years ago on the downside to bamboo cloth diapers (flats and prefolds). But they don’t lose absorbency, only microfiber does.

    Hi question. So if they pee once u have to immediately remove the flats right? No stay dry on top? Wanna CD my baby

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  4 роки тому

      Yes! If you’re using a cover and they pee on a flat then you put the flat in the dirty pail/wetbag. Flats are a natural fiber, so it’s not stay Dry.
      If you’re using flats stuffed into pockets then the diaper will be stay dry since it’s inside of the pocket. However, pockets can only be used once then it needs to be put into the dirty pail!

    Which size prefold from Green Mountain diapers would you recommend for use in a cover/pocket? Maybe I missed that part on your video if you covered it!!

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  3 роки тому +2

      I personally love size small prefolds. They make an awesome pad fold until you hit the largest rise. When my babes outgrew the absorbency I just added extra boosters.
      I found anything bigger than a small prefold to be so huge and bulky. Medium would work on the largest rise setting it’s just huge lol.
      Once my babes outgrew size small prefolds being pad folded I switched completely to flats.

    Do you think using the newborn pre folds as inserts for a 6mo is enough absorbancy?

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 років тому +1

      It definitely can be depending on your baby. For us, a newborn prefold isn’t absorbent enough by itself. I’d probably pair it with a hemp insert for my baby.

    What size are your flats and where do buy yours from? 💙

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  5 років тому +4

      I really like 28x28 but sizing is personal preference depending on how you’re using it and how old your baby is. I like 30x30 for my toddler!
      Green mountain diapers muslin flats
      Nickis diapers muslin flats
      Nickis diapers bamboo flats (large)
      Diaper rite bamboo flats (large)
      I have some diy stretchy flats and work at home mom stretchy flats. Some of the work at home mom shops are out of business now 😰 I LOOVE stretchy flats. They’re more of a luxury flat though

    Do you know why Geffen is so much more expensive than other prefolds that you can find on Nicki's (etc)? Is it just the materials?

    • @JaysNest
      @JaysNest  2 роки тому +1

      It’s sourced and manufactured in the US which is why it costs what it does. Definitely the best quality hemp I’ve tried though.
      All other companies use Pakistan and china as their main sources for fabric manufacturing, which is cheaper.
