I saw Wardruna on a Norwegian Viking black metal festival called Midgardsblot last year. It was the most amazing experience ever! And I am Norwegian - guess I found my ancestors calling 🔥💪🇳🇴
Nice reaction. It's not the "road hell", It's "the road to hel". Hel is the the realm of death, from norse mythology. Not to mistanken for the christian hell. I dont think they use mutch effect pedals, and synths. Wardruna uses a lot of traditional old music instruments. The ekstra mic is for some of the songs were he plays a lyre. Einar (the lead singer of Wardruna) was directly involved with the music production for the show Vikings. He even had at least one cameo. Wardruna is also in a big part of the Assassins creed valhalla sound track. For more Aurora, I recomend All is soft inside (live at KEXP 2018) ua-cam.com/video/IS2iVcGz_Ok/v-deo.html
The spoken word section in the end is maybe the most famous stanza from the old Norse poem Hávamál, meaning "The wisdom of the high one", The "High one" being Odin.
I would only comment for those who don't know that in norse mythos Hel is not cognate with christian Hell. Most everyone would go to Hel upon death, it's just the common afterlife place. Valhalla was a place of honor specifically for fallen warriors chosen for Ođin.
HELVEGEN . means the path to the afterlife. and it a It's an old Viking song about honoring and remembering those who have died . im a norwegian n im believe in the norse Gods
I'll just quote someone elses comment about this performance: "In this she plays the part of the white raven. In Norse mythology Odin has two ravens who travel the world and see for him. They used to be white, but Odin asked them to look in the hearts of men, and they turned black. The white raven represents purity, untouched by men's evil. Fitting for Aurora for sure. The general jist of it is that Odin has taught him the songs to ease people's passing into the underworld, but he laments that no one will be able to sing to him when he dies. It's a lament then also for the loss of their culture and traditions."
I'm afraid that's not correct. I actually speak New Norwegian myself, and it certainly does not sound like this 😊. Icelandic on the other hand, bare many sililarities with the language in this song.

Good reaction. Somebody may have already mentioned this but I had to say something, after you were trying to guess the instruments. Wardruna would fire the first member who dared to use any modern instrument in their band, such as a 'synth board.' The only modern stuff they use is strictly for the purpose of recording, such as microphones. As far as instruments go, if it didn't exist in medieval times it will not be used in their band. All of their instruments are ancient and what the Scandinavians used as far back as 900 AD. They use deer hide drums, goat horn, lur, mouth harp, bone rattle, nature sounds (water, pebbles, thunder, sticks against trees), etc. If you want to make guesses for a band, such as Wardruna, from a musician's perspective, you have to put away any idea of modern day instruments and look much farther back.

Warriors who fell in battle were lifted from the battlefield to war eternally in Valhalla. Those who lived unremarkable or traitorous lives went to Hel: the land of cold, darkness and death. The song (as I understand it) is singing to the person departing this world on their way to Hel. The last portion of the song is sung in what is thought to be the Old Norse style-as they would have sung it in their time.
Actually, Niflheim is the realm of cold, darkness, and death, those who had committed foul deeds in their life would go to Niflheim after they arrived in hel which is essentially heaven in Norse mythology if you died of old age or sickness you would go to Hel instead of Valhalla, but say if you were executed for murder or theft then you would go to Niflheim.
The lower second mic in front of Einar may be for instruments he is playing during the performance while singing simultaniously, but not needed for this particular song.
