The psychology behind the mart is the real issue. First, we are the only group that can’t take direction. We get offended. And no one can rise above their threshold for criticism. Unless you get it, from the gate, you need critique. 2- That’s the number one reason black business fails. I walked in there a few times. With a knot! Ready to spend money with my people. But how much shea butter can a nga buy? NY is the city of glamor, access, and exposure. Which creates upward mobility. It felt like I was in Sudan up in that piece. A.J. Lester was across the street. A glam joint that knew how to make a nga feel rich. Mart 125 was a backwards move. My roots are African but I’m from the Bronx. Face masks and Hotep books have no appeal to a fly ass nga that been exposed to everything. Nobody in mart 125 knew how to get me to spend money. Thats not good!
I was going to the mart I. The early 90's it was beautiful but, towards the end it did turn exactly into what this brother spoke of. He is the first one I have ever heard speak truthfully about the mart. It did have a beautiful run and then it turned into a slum spot but, the same could be said for many Harlem Monuments.
I'm a lifelong NYC resident who lived in Harlem for years...& I've seen the SAME thing that happened to Mart 125 happen to the Harlem Target...so called "PROFESSIONAL" shoplifters are the MAIN REASON that the Harlem Target CLOSED DOWN.. taking JOBS & CONVENIENCE for Harlem residents with them. It's SAD A F that this happens OVER & OVER
My mom use to always bring me here to get bobos and barrettes for my hair. She also got her nose pierced and my ears pierced there. I stayed in mart 125 when I was younger and you ain’t never lied about that smell. It was sooo strong.! I always felt like it was gonna burn down or collapse when I was in there.
Sapreme i didn't get the notification but im listening to your story, I don't know how many times i could listen to you for hours... You have lived such an interesting life... I'm glad your here to tell these stories but i still believe our people can make it.... Blessings to you Bro always ❤️
Mart 125 was so special, I don’t anyone realized how special till it was gone. I love the idea to bring it back and house all the Harlem memories. Not just for over priced fashion but for food and history. Pictures and sounds of 90s. I would visit
I was a kid when I went in mart 125 and at that time you could buy vanson leathers from there or coogies but as I think back it did seem suspicious in there, thanks for keeping the videos interesting and yet clean, be bless Preme!
Real Rap Show this is good content you put out, I was there my honest opinion about the Mart was not really exclusive the vendors out on the 125 Strip from 8th to Lenox, and on the side blocks had that gear. Straight CASH and you could get the goods with some dudes at a discount depending especially with Cats like myself from The Bronx who moved through Harlem shopping. Then you had KP Cons on 145th and Broadway Asian cats had that gear, and on the East side of 3rd Ave. Then swing downtown to Macy's 1/2 floor where you could cop all the Fashions, and I will end it off in the village West 8th, Spring Street and throughout Lewis & Clark, I know some BK Cats who was into shoplifter from out in Albany PJ's used to tear them stores up. Delancey Street had them goods to. Those were the Eras you would only know if you were there.
I loved the Mart and I agree with what you saw. I knew it was sinking and stinking and that certain people were just using it to do their dirt. Unfortunately that is how we do to our own communities sometimes. We are still in a form of mental disorder. We are so reluctant to really work together to do the right thing!!! That is why the powers that be PLAY us because they exploit our weaknesses. Maybe one day enough of us will WAKE UP. If not we will always be on the bottom of the pile with others stealing our glory.
Damn this was stuff I never knew. I got my ear pierced here when I was 11 back in ‘96. I don’t like NY no more like that but I still LOVE Harlem. That’s home for me. I remember the African vendors cause my grandmothers BF was 1. Bootleg CD’s, bootleg DVD’s, incense, t-shirts, all that.
Remember that other bootleg spot back in the 90s. I can't remember the street it was on, because I'm not from the City, but everybody and their mama was there. We would drive all the way from Massachusetts to buy our school clothes and ish. Idk if it's still there last I heard it had gotten raided. It was a multi story building and every floor had all kinds of vendors selling bootleg clothes, jewelry, shades etc. I think foreigners ran it
I used to go to MART 125.......I was feeling the BLACK BUSINESSES in there; however, I wasn't surprised when it closed , because you could tell when it was still poppin, that it wasn't being MAINTAINED correctly. And naturally, if you don't maintain a place, it's going to eventually turn into SHIT. What I don't understand is WHY that property wasn't just SOLD to a more CREDIBLE BLACK BUSINESS OWNER, who KNOWS how to take care of a BUILDING. All this time that has gone by, & it just sits there as a FORMER business. SMFH.
