Wow. So I worked in this mall in 2005, at EB Games. My sister had a job at Claire's. I have so many stupid, wonderful memories of this mall, both working there and loitering with my friends. It's so sad to see it this way. There used to be a carousel in the mall, not far from one of the anchors. And when that got pulled out, I assumed Towne West's days were numbered. The carousel was such a staple! Thanks for this, and I hope Wichita treated you well. :3
You have the best dead mall videos. I discovered your channel while looking for info on Jamestown Mall when it was scheduled for demolition. I grew up in that area so it was very emotional. Your channel inspired me to film malls I visit around the country for my own memories. I'm thankful for your channel so I subscribed...and binge watch!
Buddy, great vapor wave/synth wave music, I felt immersed. Also, the security guard's presence felt like an 80s over protective security guard like the film Mannequin. Wha-ta-comic relief-Lol!!! Anyway, as a LEO, I believe he was lonely and wanted attention that's it. Anyhow, buddy, another immersive and awesome documentary of this dying mall. 😁🤜🤛🤙👍🖖
Wow, why would a security guard behave that way. Ridiculous! As a guy in my 40's (crazy) I remember how incredible these places were when I was a kid. The magic of buying my first Nintendo and JC Penney 80's will never leave me. I think we'd all love to see these places likes this live again. Its not about consumerism but how they brought out communities together and what they provided. I remember my grandparents taking me to the mall and how incredible it seemed to them. I've enjoyed your videos and see your perspective on the places. Screw the security guards and I'm glad you're making this content!
I live in Wichita and it's not surprising for a security guard to behave like this in this area. The security companies are on power trips, I've been hassled by Walmart security for minding my own business. I hate this city!
I live in Wichita, I remember when this mall was still jumping. There are multiple factors of why this mall is dead, but it's been a slow death. I believe Cohan is trying to sell it, but nobody wants it. I suspect that it will be demolished in the next 10 years. It's sad because I spent a great deal of my teen years going to this mall and love the 90s decor of it. Towne East Square is still popular and is still owned by Simon Properties.
Those lighting anomalies were from the recessed fixtures with inferior bulbs, common thing with some of the trash that comes from overseas. Also I want to say this Mall reminds me of the one in Ashtabula Ohio it was a former Kohan property but since been bought back by the previous owner.
i went there with a group of friends over the summer and it was a fever dream. old people doing laps around the interior, decked out security shuffling around, and just... exactly what it is in the video. if you want to visit a thriving mall though, go to the east side. also to explain the neons in the food court being off, you might've gone when the mall couldn't pay their evergy bill, so they lost electricity in all the main walkways.
Thank you so much for coming to that mall to make another great commentary walk-through! Haha dude I’m telling you, those mall cops are hella annoying!! They go way back too. There’s an old video of two dudes filming some show in the parking lot of the mall until a security car shows up behind them, just to kick them out. All that, over FILMING AT A PARKING LOT- 💀. I recommend you search for the video as it’s here on youtube. Anyways, these mall cops have a reputation along with the mall and it’s definitely not a good rep. Good video as always!
Yeesh this place looks depressing. That security guard definitely gave me some Paul Blart vibes too. He was a wannabe cop trying to play cool lol. Love your content btw. Be safe out there.
I think you stumbled not just upon a neon tomb, but Miami Valley Centre's Security. I swear that guy must be his long lost brother. Also, was that two old buckle facades in the same wing at 14:25 & 18:12 ?! Excited for the next one though! ❤
18:37 This song is super pretty! I didn’t see a citation for it in the video, do you have a link to or name of the song? Gonna put it in my vaporwave playlist :)
I live just a few minutes from Towne West and grew up in the immediate area. A lot of my childhood exists within that building and it is sad the state at which these buildings are forgotten.
I feel like mall security guards like that probably wanted to be real cops, but they failed out of the Academy, so this is the closest they'll ever get. So they overstep their boundaries, and abuse their authority, to make themselves feel big. Wannabe douchebags. Also, I growl at my computer every time I hear the name Kohan. Ugh. Poor mall. Great video as always!
It seems like they can’t handle taking an L throughout their career and cope through being what you described them to be lol. Trust me, there are a group of people of this city that want the best for this mall but unfortunately it just so happens to be that a mall is owned by Ko-💩
The intro was really cool. Those paul blarts do take it to the extreme most of the time. I finally went to a Spencer's here at a mall when they had a car show there. It's been over 10 years. Still love the music you play in your videos. Hope you have a good weekend.
I grew up all throughout middle school and high school just a couple of miles away from there on South Meridian. Interestingly, something you can't really do today as a kid, but me and some of my friends would get on our bikes and we would ride over there and play in the arcade sometimes for hours on a Saturday. It's so sad to see it. Look like this. Even town east while it's thriving. Looks nothing like it did when I was growing up. But town West used to be busy when I was growing up in the 90s there were always lots of people there and it was great because for all of us on the west side of town, he gave us them all for some shopping and then if you really wanted to go, you would drive to the east side of town to go to town Eas. I can remember when town East had a stage in the middle with waterfalls that we thought were just the coolest thing ever that would cascade from just underneath the second level income down over the staircase and you could come on the staircase that was halfway between the two levels and you could reach out and touch the water. Speaking of water I remember that fountain at town West as well. Its so sad to see water features and conversation pits disappear from malls. My local mall has some over stuffed chairs that you can sit in and some comfy padded benches with charging ports but thats as close to a conversation area you will get. But the problem is its right in the busy part of the mall in the center so you are always having people walk 2 feet from you. Goodby Towne West.
Hi North - Great episode as always. Thought of you when I saw the news on KWWL this past week about Crossroads in Waterloo. Glad you got the last livestream done in there. The only update I have read is that Merle Hay is still working on an ice arena. We'll see how that goes.
i remember moving to wichita in 2013 going into the mall once and it was still busy and bustling with life and i went back once last year and it felt so, sad but also haunting to see just how everything felt like you weren't even with people anymore.
Maybe the security guard's hero is the infamous Forest Fair Village security guard and he was just trying to live up to that standard. 🤣🤣🤣 Glad you got to visit the next day without the wannabe there. What? Kohan not paying the electric bill? Say it isn't so! BTW, that song in the intro just screams the 80s. I love it!
Wow! I knew this mall wasn't doing great but looks like a ghost-town inside. Wichita's a one mall town these days. Great video as always! The one floor modern day Metcalf South.
I live here too. Maybe not every month, but damn close to it. Honestly I'm surprised they just don't shut down the mall. I'm not looking forward to the mall being closed, but I'm sure that day is coming soon.
Man that security guard! Wow that’s pretty wild 😂. Kohan probably doesn’t want people to see how neglected the mall is. This mall is so sad 😢. I remember malls were packed in the 80’s and 90’s. Is there a Town East Square?
Never seen a mall directory in a mall’s bathroom before. Shame such a nice mall has gone downhill fast. I really wanted to see that neon food court at some point
Hey friend thank you making film for where I'm from and I remember use to go there back where all the stores where open that time when I was a little kid and I'm glad you did my friend thank you so much 😊😊
Again, great video. It’s always been a mistake to remodel a beautiful 80s mall with 90s or early 2000s crap. The 80s designed malls were the pinnacle of mall design. It’s one of the reasons why Dan Bells video on the Sunrise mall and Retail Archaeology’s video in the Tucson mall are two of my all time favorites. Those two were 80s malls that remained fairly intact in those videos. When watching mall videos of 80s malls that were remodeled with that 90s or early 2000s ugliness you can’t really get the feel of what the mall was like in its glory days except for old pictures that I am very appreciative that NorthCDogg22 provides. It’s one of the reasons I very much look forward to his videos. Again great job!
It absolutely does make your videos stand out from the rest. The extra effort you put forth the dig up old pictures or film clips is noticed by everyone who watches your videos.
The music at 21:28, sounds like an edited and s l o w e d down version of Laura Branigan's cover of "Self Control." The security guard lost his mind over you having a camera/phone, but a sign in the mall (at 29:54) says "LET'S BE SOCIAL" and has a picture of someone using a phone. Something tells me that "power trip" is a massive understatement for the way he was acting.
This mall never had a McDonald's!, and the spot you showed was an old arcade at one time, and then the local school system had a alternative school there.
This is a great mall Towne Square West Food Court was the best area. Sad the movie theater is open but the computer age now has pretty much cut going to the movies. Sad I remember going to the outside movie houses in my 20's.
I ate so many unhealthy meals in that food court as a teenager, I loved the atmosphere. Now it's just depressing. I still occasionally walk the halls of Towne West just for the nostalgia factor and I know that it's not long for this world. I suspect in the next 10 years it will be demolished. It's sad
Ok I’m such a numbskull it’s the Vista mall I’ve been trying to pin point it but I couldn’t get the name in my head. Oh well maybe next time. keep up the good work northcdogg22 💜🐶💜
