  • Here we are.. yet again..
One of the most fun parts about running thru your backlog footage of malls, is that it allows you to free up space and get back out there filming again. One mall I just had to check up on was an old favorite just over the border.. Sandburg Mall is one of the few abandoned malls in country not many people know about, it’s small size, relatively unremarkable lifetime, and town give it a ghost status.. So alas, it still sits abandoned.. waiting for a future, yet stuck in the past.. Join me today as we venture inside of, tell the story of, and see how Sandburg Mall is doing in Galesburg, Illinois, as of December, 2023..

As said before, I was showing the video to my mom and we were going to Sandburg before I was able to drive and I'm 62 now. We can't remember the train not being there. The carmark was originally JCPenney care service and was there long before the Mall closed. It was in competition with Sears. I can very well remember when the Kmart was added to the Mall. So many memories of Sandburg.

Stores and restaurants that you missed in no particular order and some that became different vendors over the years. A lot of these names were original with the mall and a few came later on. Chess King, Orange Julius, Wag’s (Restaurant), Pearle Vision Center, Team Electronics, Fannie Mae Candies, and Hickory Farms.

The opening of the cozy and bright christmas lights, to then cut to the empty and foreboding tomb of the mall was a great intro! The advanced darkness bit was great too 😂. Your passion and personality is really what makes these videos that much better! May Sandburg mall rest in peace, not mold and rot 😭.

Born in 1979 in Galesburg, lived there through high school and some college (save my year abroad in Finland). My father was General Manager for the McDonald's on Main Street, then Henderson Street. Both my sister and I also worked at the Main Street McD's. Spent a lot of time at Sandburg Mall, but through the years there were plenty of changes that occurred while I was in the area and well after leaving to go to Illinois State and beyond.
Ended up working at the Dillard's store at Northwest Plaza in the Saint Louis area right before the Mills opened up and made a few trips to Chesterfield, Jamestown, Galleria, Plaza Frontenac. Northwest Plaza was dying out at the time I worked there before the Mills opened up, and closed up shortly after I moved out of the St Louis area due to a shooting at the mall there.
Thank you for taking the time to document all of these malls. Although the age of brick-and-mortar commercial retail is waning (I don't think it will ever completely die out), it surely will not look like it ever did at the height of the Mall Age. I appreciate the fact that you not only want to document the current status of the malls, but also want to share the background of each mall. I find it interesting to see that so many malls seem to have very familiar stories which has seemed to lead so many of them ultimately to the same fate.
I think that is one thing that Business (as a whole) tends to miss, trying to learn from its history and past mistakes and become better overall as opposed to looking at the present and plan for the future, while trying to quietly forget the past and move forward.

Seeing this is very bittersweet. It's sad seeing how run down and destroyed it is now, but it's also nice looking at the now empty stores and remembering all the memories I have of that mall.
In 1997-98 my mom used to work at the McDonald's there while she was going to school to get her CNA license when I was about 4 years old. There were many days I would be sitting there in the eating area with my color books and toys while my mom worked. I got my ears pierced at the Claire's that was there around that time as well! My parents used to take me there every year around Christmas time to take pictures with Santa.
My cousin had her birthday at the mini golf course that was there in 2004 (I think that's the year) and in 2006ish the girl's choir at my school would take field trips there to have lunch and shop, super fun when you're a 5th grade girl lol
When I was in junior highschool my mom and I used to shop at the book store that was there and once I hit highschool we would get our eye brows waxed at the Tanning Gallery.
In 2015ish a guy I knew in school opened a card game shop there (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic) and I found myself hanging out there and trading cards and playing games for so many hours.
The last time I went there was around the start of 2016. My now husband and I made a trip there to use to photo booth and I still have those photos from that day. Hell, I'm looking at those pictures as I'm writing this comment.
Thanks for posting this video! I had a good time going down memory lane while watching ❤

Can’t even go to a JC Penny’s anymore close by to buy a dress shirt or pants… have to drive an hour to find one.

This is my hometown mall. You should definitely check out those office/conference room hallways.. those were ominous even when the mall was operating. There are a couple more bathrooms back there and through one of the little windows on one of those backroom doors, there was always this weird purple light cast on a chain-link fence. I never went through that door.. but it always gave a weird vibe. Definitely worth exploring next time you come through the area. Great video! ✌

I was born in Galesburg in 75 but we moved to the Quad Cities in 83. I can't believe the planter/seating areas are the same. I was fascinated by the volcanic rocks in the planters and occasionally brought one home. I had a birthday party at the McDonalds, and I'm pretty sure that's the movie theater I saw the Dark Crystal in (the first one you explored). I grew up in Minnesota, but have a lot of memories at this Illinois mall because my grandparents farmed a few miles outside of Galesburg. We would always come to visit several times a year, and especially at Christmas when we would often get a gift card to the Carl Sandburg Mall from our family. I remember shopping at the bookstore there with my gift card, going to the Mcdonalds, going to see the Little Mermaid with my cousins when it came out at the theater, and looking at the amazing train set there from the platform you see in the video. Lots of Christmas fun at that mall, it'll always have a special place in my heart.

My sister worked at the one in the mall, there was also a two screen movie theatre down the street on Henderson where the Big Lots (since has been converted over to a Community Church and finally the Slumberland is now). The theatre on Henderson closed first, with the other two shortly afterwards. I remember having to drive to the Quad Cities or Peoria in 1999-2001 era to watch some of the movies that were coming out. A late show (midnight) of Gangs of New York in Davenport with a car load of college buddies on a super foggy night was not a fun night.

Well, I remember hearing the phone going off when I was walking back out thru the old Sears. I would assume they walled off that JCPenney entrance some time in early 2023 as that’s when I went and remember seeing it for the first time. I guess they just don’t want shoppers inside the bargain warehouse to see what’s going on behind closed doors🤷‍♂️

I'm going to add to this comment as I watch through the video, so apologies if I repeat anything you say in the video.
My great grandma used to do her grocery shopping at Osco after we ate at the Sirloin Stockade that was recently torn down. That would have been around 1996-97.
I remember during Christmas season once walking on that little plant area on the right at about 3:53 and a security guard yelling at me. I was probably like 7 at the time.
As recently as 2013 (I guess it's been ten years, YIKES) I used to take my break when I worked at Walmart to come to the mall to have a nice long bathroom break in the bathroom at 13:09 in private ha... Apparently, in typical Galesburg fashion, people started meeting for not-so-kosher activities in those bathrooms.
And as recently as 2017, I was denied a Bergener's credit card in there for having no credit. The irony.
I could tell you what probably all those stores were in the 90s. And other locals could probably tell you what they were as far back as when it was constructed. My mom of all people shared your first video of it and couldn't believe her childhood hangout had deteriorated so much so quickly. She got her wedding ring at that old Zales, even.
The model train was a staple of it. I was obsessed with trains as a kid. And it was my favorite part of the mall. It was all electrified and the trains worked, there were lights, and ahh... it was so cool. At some point people had started vandalizing it and they had to put the top plexiglass on it to prevent people from throwing things into it, and they cut the power to it.
14:08 was a McDonald's, still with the old 90s McD's brick facade. I remember the yellow lanterns out front of it, and how greasy the floor always was. It was a big McDonald's, too.
The GNC, a friend of mine used to work in there. He's a beloved local firefighter and boxer now. If you know, you know.
17:05 was Aladdin's Castle, an arcade. They had one of the big Star Wars Podracers in there. Top of the line in 1999!
That Musicland store actually was a Sam Goody before they closed. I remember going in there but CDs were expensive, and I was a wee lad. I remember flipping through the posters section. Sam Goody closed long ago, and of course they got bought by FYE, this store just closed. I can't remember seeing those colors there in the mall's last years, though. I think it may have been covered up?
20:04 oh the agonizing amounts of time my mom would drag me into that store! (Bath and Body Works, right? I dunno, soap store's a soap store's a soap store...)
That walled off section sure was well-hidden. I didn't know about it at all! I do remember Spencer's gifts, and it was where you said it was, however from my recollection despite its location, more closely resembled the older example you showed. All I have memory of being there is a big wall, so clearly someone knew what was behind there! It almost looked like it had been converted into a break room or something.
5 years of being abandoned in a town like Galesburg, where despite it's small size the crime is up there with Chicago's, has ensured that the mall has only been SORT'VE abandoned, as people are constantly breaking in and running amok inside of it.
Even stranger is the fact that 3 places in the mall remain occupied, walled off from the rest of it. JCPenney is now Warehouse Bargains, which is why that wall is there now. I bought my bed there last year, ha.
There's the Uhaul rental where Kmart was, which was closed down long before the rest of the mall. It's walled off as well, as seen at 9:49. And Karmark has managed to continue operating independently.
WELP. I guess this is what getting old feels like...

      @NorthCdogg22  7 місяців тому +2

Thanks for sharing those memories! It sounds like it was a pretty magical place when it was still around!

    • @thebreakfastmenu
      @thebreakfastmenu 7 місяців тому

@@NorthCdogg22 It was definitely a place people gathered, like you see in old movies and whatnot. But ya know... greed destroyed it. They want millions for the mall, laughably, and the rent prices for the storefronts was so high that it motivated giant corporations to not even bother renewing. If McDonald's won't pay the rent, it should be a red flag that maybe you're charging too much.
It was almost like they didn't even attempt to compete with Walmart and Target or face the local recession from Maytag, just jacked up prices and surprise pikachu faced when the stores left.

No Hobby Lobby in GBurg proper, Wal-mart opened in the mid to late 80's across Henderson (right next to Hy-vee, where the Marshall's is), Target came in during the 90's, that is when K-Mart moved from it's location. There was a Jack's (which Shopko bought the location after Jack's closed) just north of Highway 34, I remember a Hornsby's on the corner of Fremont and Henderson, and a Montgomery Ward, which turned into a number things, including an Eagle Country Market just to the south of the Mall (right behind Perkins next to Joann Fabric).

Diamond Dave's was a late addition to the mall, originally just McDonald's and the Orange Julius when built. Diamond Dave's came in with the K-Mart wing. Orange Julius was originally across the center court a few spots down from Foot Locker. I do remember Fannie Mae's Candies across from Orange Julius on the Bergner's wing. Karmel Korn was early on too, in or near the current Orange Julius location in the JC Penney wing. Mall management fought with the McDonald's franchisee all the time in regards to air handlers and ventilation systems to prevent too many smells from entering the main hallways.

I saw my first movie in a theater at that mall.
I participated in the Mall wide trick or treat when I was a kid. Used to spend my time in Waldenbooks while my mom was shopping reading comics.
I don’t know what it is about this city that attracts millionaires to buy property and then let it turn into dust. You had the Hotel on the square that got shut down and then tore down.and you also have St Mary’s Square which is now unusable.
In a perfect world I would remodel all those spaces and turn them into museums and antique malls with restaurants and food carts run by the towns citizens and not someone who decided to purchase it as a last minute tax write off instead of it just being left there to rot. Instead of tax havens for the rich make them public landmarks clean them up and actually do some good with them.
Those places should belong to the citizens of Galesburg not the rich elite jerks that bought them and won’t do anything with them besides use them as a tax write off.
