@@jase4270 Some of these towns were literally wiped off the map--the ones that did save up some supplies for emergencies had those supplies washed away. Even the towns that weren't wiped off the map, they were heavily damaged. And @cindyorr, yes, you can cook over an outdoor fire--if you can find dry firewood, have a way to cut it up/off the tree, know how to start a fire without matches/lighter-, and have the food to cook and something to cook it in. We managed before we had gas and electric because we learned all those skills from our parents. How many people know these things now? Just think of the cost and availability of building materials now - as well as the skilled workers needed to rebuild. It's a nightmare and it will continue for over the next decade and before THAT, there's another storm or storms coming. Move out of harm's way if you're lucky enough to get an insurance payout.
@hotaruglaive. You may not realize it, but you are being a troll right now. It’s important to try to put yourself in their spot, if it doesn’t make sense to you…… If you are willing to imagine yourself or family or friends in that situation and,, then read up on how much notice they were given and how…… and you’ll understand more. It makes sense. And it wasn’t their fault. This was a natural disaster. They made the best decisions they could and knew how, in their position, and based on their experience. Sometimes it’s easier to think they must have done something wrong, than to realize that we don’t always have control. It wasn’t their fault. And if it happened to you and you made the wrong choice on whether to stay or go or when to go… it wouldnt be your fault either. This is a reminder to stock up on all our emergency preparedness. But… you can only do what you can do.
The hateful comments in this thread…the nasty political remarks. I remember when people cared about one another, when they came together in times like this. @strawdemindset in all due respect what you stated should be obvious and those in charge are dragging their heels. Helicopters should have already flown in supplies. There is no excuse for the lack of government response.
Please people in these flooded areas stay Out of that Water! Even when you can walk through it. If you do be prepared to get possible bacteria type staff infections.
Oh, the horrors lurking in flood water. Debris that can injure you or knock you down, bacteria, trash, chemical runoff, sewage and animal dung, all that phlegm people hoick on the sidewalk, a manhole with a missing cover, ... snakes.
That and it just pushes the water and makes waves. So that house that looks flooded may not be - until you drive through in your giant truck and push that water into their home. People are just dumb.
We have had major flooding here in Iowa back in 2008 and then again in other parts, within the last year. Then in August 2020, we had a derecho go through with 140 mph winds (land hurricane with straight line winds) and destroyed so much in Eastern Iowa. Some buildings are still waiting for insurance settlements. Power was out for many for 2 weeks. My mother who was 90 at the time, had no cable and internet for a month an a half. People all pitched in and helped themselves and each other. We didn't wait for the government, in fact, we couldn't even get this storm acknowledged for at least a week. No one knew because we had no power in about 7 counties. The government will not save us. We must be able to work together as a community but that is difficult when everyone in the community is affected and there is no way to communicate. It does get better, thankfully. Lots of prayers for all those affected. Stay positive. (Romans 2:28).

@@hnttakata713 we have a local flight school and regional airport in Statesville just at the i40 closure who are dropping off supplies , there is a local mule team taking supplies into high need areas by foot / horse. Locals are packing uhauls and their cars going as far as they can. The impact is huge across the mountains. I have been watching large military helicopters heading west with supplies but the terrain is rugged and many roads impassable so flatlanders coming in to help really have their challenges reaching many communities.
Why frame it as - Still having problems? - the interstate and most major roads are washed out, 1000's of homes and business are gone. YES - there will be problems for years to come. This will not be fixed by next week.
That’s the problem, people think that it will be easy to get back to normal. It’s going to take years of hard work and still some things will never return, that’s just the way it is. When you lose your entire life’s work in a business and your home from the same event it takes a toll on your mind. Some people chose to move on and let the past stay in the past. Others refuse to give up and rebuild and inspire others to do the same. Neither is right or wrong, it’s what is best for each person.

Sending prayers from Buffalo NY!! We dealt with a similar situation here two winters ago. Worst snowstorm in Buffalo history. My heart goes out to everyone in Asheville and surrounding areas. I wish I could come help but I wouldn't know where to start! Come to Buffalo! We have affordable housing, an amazing waterfront, lots of good food and clean water. We are close to Niagara Falls and Canada, breathtaking views all around, friendly people and lots of fun things going on all the time! Excellent jazz scene! Comedy is abundant! Super bikeable city with lots of greenways and more. I live in Elmwood Village which is very Asheville-like. Food co-op, community gardens, a great farmers market and more. We even have our own version of the River Arts District called Larkinville. Another great area near Buffalo is East Aurora which is like Asheville in many ways! If you need to flee Asheville and don't mind a bit of snow in the winters, come up to Buffalo where life is still affordable! Buffalo has a lot of the same qualities as Asheville! I'm happy to show people around!

I grew up in FL and NC, from NC originally. In my 39 years, I've never seen such destruction from a hurricane. Our area in NC got lucky. My heart breaks for everyone affected!! 🙏🙌💔😔
If someone told you NC was gonna flood from a hurricane you’d expect it to be in Eastern North Carolina, like with Hurricane Floyd. To see the mountains catching it from the South is unbelievable. Let’s get this taken care of.
It’s inevitable. Has to do with the topography of the area. Mountain rain will always come down rivers and take out anything we humans build in it’s path. The only thing to do is not build by rivers which is impractical.
The most urgent health concerns are safety around filthy floodwaters, downed power lines & broken gas lines, access to clean drinking water, and communications so people can report on their circumstances and request what they need.
600 unaccounted for now (down from 1000). 30 people confirmed dead in Buncombe Co as of 10pm EST tonight Sept 29th. Please make sure to fill your tanks prior to a major storm because as we all know it may be virtually impossible to get any afterwards. Sadly, a lot of folks didn't expect the storm to go so far north or for it to rain as long as it did but nature is unpredictable. This is exactly why it's best to stay prepared prior just in case. Emergency go kit and medical kits should be on hand and readily available if you have to quickly leave or if you have to stay in place for an extended period of time with no access to the outside world or its resources. Where is the National Guard and Reservists? This is what they are for or have are they being utilized in other ways which are now putting USAll in danger when we need them here at home.
@@jtg2323 I followed this storm very closely since before it got there. That forecast you mentioned didn't come in until very last Thursday. Up until then, the hurricane was expected to head west. Weather is not as predictable as people seem to think.
I'm sure some places no matter how much they prepare ahead of time if their house or their supplies got washed away what were they what are they supposed to do
Uh, take their valuables with them? Fill up jugs with drinking water, make sure your generators working and you’ve got plenty of fuel for a week, meals ready to eat MRE’s, batteries charged, flashlights working, weather radio, etc.? I understand the elderly in the infirm, those living alone have it tough, but that’s what their younger neighbors are for, right?
@@solarwind907 Cute of you to expect people in rural communities that are largely low income areas to magically have the money for extensive survival kits. You are wildly out of touch with the reality of these communities and with how little warning anyone had for how far the storm went off track compared to the forecasted path.
@@cypheri1339 I would be willing to bet that most families can afford to head to the local food bank and pick up most canned food items they would need in an emergency. If they’re resourceful, they could can and freeze their own. Can these people afford a laptop? A TV or a smart phone? Cable or cell service? If so, they can certainly afford a generator capable. Of running a furnace, fridge, freezer and lights. Maybe not all at the same time, but in an emergency it would be great. If they are dirt poor through no fault of their own and/or of low intelligence then they have my deepest sympathy. I can only hope that a more fortunate Neighbor could help them out.
@@MaryAnn-r1g agreed, if your house is leveled and washed away by a wall of mud and water, putting plywood on your windows and surrounding your house with a few sandbags isn’t going to help. And despite meteorologists best efforts, they’re never going to pinpoint exactly where, when and how intense, the storm will be at a specific time. A few years ago in Lawton, British Columbia they had 120°F weather, then a forest fire that devastated the area. Then an atmospheric river that caused mudslides and flooding That destroyed everything in its path. These are things we should expect with human caused climate change. We should certainly try to elect people who understand climate change And at least will not lie to us. And FYI, anyone who thinks they’ll be able to buy insurance to cover these losses in the future, is living in a fools paradise. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I hope the people in need get the help they need ASAP.

Um, they can't get through the roads? You can call the county or city itself you know? Also, do you think the county of Yancey is too lazy to ask for help from their government? Probably not. Or do you think that you are the center of the universe and if you haven't heard about it, then it couldn't be happening?

Please provide for the victims rather than continue pogroms of genocide the taxpayers need access to funds for storm damage relief.

We were without power in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake, VA, for 10 1/2 days, after Hurricane Isabel came through on Sept. 2004. Crews came to help from other states and they had to work neighborhood by neighborhood due to the widespread damage to power lines. We could not cook, go anywhere because of the many large trees downed across my neighborhood streets and the heat was unbereable, but my children and I survived. People need to be patient, although it may seem too difficult at this point.
How anyone can not be crying inside or out watching this I don't know. I have been through this region and it was recovering from 2008 crash and building things up and that was 2014. The real estate was booming over the years everything on the big up. Now this. 600 miles this Helene dumped on. Asheville North Carolina looks utterly wrecked downtown. People are going to just leave. Those who have elevated properties will have to drive out of town to do anything. For years.
It was on Good Morning America this morning. What news are you watching? I noticed Fox didn't show anything about it this morning and only talked about the election and politics. Hmmm.
The major highway to Asheville is closed due to landslides, so no one can get into Asheville. This means nothing can get there via truck, everything needs to be airlifted in to WNC. So do not expect major TV news to get here unless they have a helicopter and another helicopter support team with food and water, too, and tents to live in.
Well, I guess when the public sees the desperation and distress these folks are in, it will help bring resources and support to their communities faster, but I do see what you mean.
Because other people in these comments are whining that they aren't talking to these people and the media is ignoring them. As someone who lives in a hurricane area? I actually agree with you, but so many people want to rubberneck while pretending to care about the victims.
I remember back during Katrina, people kept asking “where’s Bush, where’s FEMA?”. People had a sense of who was ultimately to blame for the poor response. Now, it seems we aren’t allowed to criticize.
It’s been like two days! And recovery has ALREADY STARTED. Soooo what exactly are you pissed about?! You just wanna start a political argument where there is not one. The response to this has been the fastest I’ve ever seen living in the area.
Too early to tell, but the more greenhouse gases we put into the atmosphere, the stronger the storms. It’s only going to get worse until we fix the problem.

It’s the snakes you have to worry about, in that water.
People have lost limbs from really bad infections, so Linda is right. I lived thru Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.
