I grew up going to Mitchell & Ness with my Dad starting in the early eighties. Back in the beginning of my visits it was pretty much just old replicas of MLB hats as well as some old Negro League hats and a few old MLB jerseys, all road/away versions. The story I remember being told by one of the old guys working there was that they had found a bunch of old grey flannel (they kind used for away uniforms) in an old warehouse that they didn’t know they had as well as smaller batches of other wools used for the hats. After a customer brought in an old original MLB jersey to be repaired/refurbished they got the idea to start doing replicas, so in the very beginning stages it was just a few away jersey replicas (because all the old flannel they found was grey) and a wide array of old MLB and Negro League hats, all fitted way before you could find fitted hats anywhere. Met Richie Ashburn there once and got him to sign a baseball for my Dad. Miss that version of M&N, a real hidden treasure.

Good video. Missing some information. How they repaired an authentic wool mlb jersey. Which led to the recreation of retro jerseys. Also outkast wearing the Dale Murphy jersey in their video which kicked off the throwback era. And Mitchell and ness stores are already in Australia/New Zealand and Hong Kong online as well. And mlb’s 125 anniversary in 1994 which kicked off the retro jersey era. Opened the door for throwbacks to come in with M&N a few years later. Spike Lee would be courtside at the Knicks games wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers Pee Wee Reese jersey in 1995 Made by M&N.

You know your stuff! M&N jerseys definitely saw a big change in quality when Adidas bought them out in the mid-2000's. Miss the days when Ripon would manufacture their jerseys; both the quality and cut were significantly better. Not a fan of the boxier jerseys they make now.

i really like they way they did on 90-00's, except the huge size, cause they doing back then the old jersey are similar like the og one, even the cutting and fabric and the logos, not now they doing with same template of fabric and the cutting same as an a-line skirt, logo and numbering are much bigger...

Mitchell n Ness been poppin since da 80s in Philly far as blks wearin it. It was da only places 2 get fitted hats back in da day. Everybody didnt have fitteds on everyday like u c now. Da 1st rappers I saw wit fitteds in a video from M&N was Tribe Called Quest Check da Rhyme

M&N is still the go-to for throwbacks, but the quality of their products is a far cry from what they produced in the past. The issue with their jerseys now is they're too cookie-cutter, especially for authentics. M&N prefers to use the same type of mesh for the majority of their authentic jerseys, across all sports. The material is nice yes, but it's not always accurate. Same goes for the numbers, they're nowhere near as thick or durable as the heavier vinyl numbers teams had on their jerseys back in the day. There's other companies that put more effort in these sorta details (e.g. Ebbetts using actual durene fabric for their throwbacks), so it would be nice to see M&N step up their game :)

It’s a shame it really is… their USA, Mexico, Korea and El Salvador runs are much better than this China garbage today… I only buy older runs because of this the new runs are a joke

@ 100% agreed. The earlier El Salvador jerseys were more or less on par with the US-made products, not only in quality of materials but also in cut
