A great performance of a beautiful Concerto. Overlooked so many times. My heart sings for this marvelous piece performed so well by a fine orchestra. Bravo.

Chez Ernest Bloch l'expression d'une musique élevée est atteinte et c'est une musique qui parle directement à la personne humaine , c'est d'une grande beauté grave , simple et lumineuse , épurée .

Every composition of Ernest Bloch's is like a set of prayers to Hashem that raise our souls towards Heaven, bathed in the light of a response from On High, the more we feel in deeply hearing sacred utterances, answers and questions, without words.

Our orchestra is playing this piece and I'm the pianist!! This is an amazing work and a lot to study about it, and the background of the piece is really interesting, everyone should look it up!

Fully agree. In my humble opinion, a much finer piece than Schelomo.

More than any composer, Bloch ranges from the highest Angst to the most profound sweetness.

Thank you so much for this wonderful recording.
I first heard this work thru a friend of mine, a conductor.
We were literally up all night following the score and then listening to it again ... especially that beautiful and accessible fugue .. what a text book work... and an even better way to study counterpoint and fugue writing.
This is the 3rd performance I've heard.... the first being the recording with score with my friend.... the second .. when he conducted it with the CSUN University Orchestra in Southern CA... and about 35 years later.. now.
Thank you again... so very much.

This has been a favorite of mine since I was a teen. It's wonderful to hear that others can spend a night listening to it as I have done many times. But I don't have the score. :-)

Yes. The performance was released on a Chandos CD in 1989, with works for string orchestra by Bloch (Concerto Grosso No.1), Barber (Adagio for Strings Op.11), Grieg (Holberg Suite Op.40), and Puccini (Crisantemi). This CD is still available on Amazon, notably.

Bloch's music is such a fascinating mix of many cultural ideas. It is sometimes Jewish, other times American with folk music, and at other times mystical. I really enjoy this mix. I am so glad that I discovered him here on UA-cam because I had never heard of him even though I have been an NPR listener for many years.

Well,it's a bit slower and heavier than my ideal, but in compensation, the rich tone and large phrasing more than make up, giving a warm glow, especially in "Dirge." Fine playing thruout.

A "Mercury Living Presence" Album (CD) was released in 1991. Three works by Bloch are on it: His two Concerto Grossos, plus Schelomo. Howard Hansen conducted the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra in 1959 (the year Bloch died) and 1960. Do not know about its availability.

isn't the first movement supposed to be faster? I turned the speed to 1.25, and it sounded how I've played it

    • @lotanyeung7156

+Braden Perry Interpretations. Conductor may have wanted a more heavy, weighted sound rather than the scherzo (?) like sound that you might have played it as. :D

    • @ChrisBreemer
      @ChrisBreemer 7 років тому

Coming fresh to this piece (and what a great surprise it is !) the tempo of the 1st movement seems spot on to me. At 1.25 speed it sounds good also, but it rather loses its poignancy to my ears, sounding somewhat hurried and indiffferent.
