I, too, have a vintage sewing machine and it's my baby. It is not a Singer, but it SINGS!!
Thanks, Christopher, for so many wonderful tips. Love you!

Thank you! I love this machine for decorative stitches and your explanation will take my sewing to a new level. If you own a vintage sewing machine, you probably like fiddling with it too, so telling why two seemingly identical feet are different is very helpful to the engineering-oriented mind! By watching videos on how to use vintage Singer sewing machine attachments, I now know how my grandmother made all those perfectly sewn doll clothes for my beloved Madame Alexander doll!

This was my mother's machine! This is what I learned on.

Very informative video, especially with the points about using the right foot and a stabilizer. I'm sure you saved many sewers a lot of frustration. I have a 401a and I wouldn't trade it for all the computerized machines they make today! The machines today have a plastic shell and lack the backbone of a full aluminum or cast iron model. I can sew anything with the 401and think it's one of Singer's greatest masterpieces!

Jule Phillips love my 401a, likewise, won't trade it for any computerized sewing machine!

I have a 401 too... but my thread keeps on breaking on me..(top).. any hints?

When that happens on my 401A, it's almost always due to one of two things.
First, there is buildup in the tension mechanism. You don't have to disassemble it to wipe the three disks clean, just release the tension and wipe a lint-free cloth with some 90% alcohol or better through them.
Second, I've accidentally grabbed a feed over plate which was not meant for Slant-O-Matics. Some of the 600 and 700 series cover plates fit but don't quite line up.
      Maybe that will help.
(I assume you've checked the tension and thread path and made sure that the thread has been pulled up and over that little notch on the tension mechanism so the outside spring can hold it under tension.)@@dankthompson

I have a 401a, and I never knew that you needed a satin stitch foot for this. Thank you.

Like your 401 videos! I'll mention that if you have the original attachment set that comes with the zigzag Slant-O-Matics, you will find it includes the satin stitch foot (although they call it the "special" stitch foot or something like that.) I always like to use the original, vintage feet when I can. :)

lisalu910 good to know. Thanks for that. I just bought a 401 yesterday and I’m pretty sure it came with that special foot so just when I was beginning to worry I’d have to go on a hunt for an elusive part that necessitated the search for another elusive part, I saw your post! Thanks again!

The special purpose foot also has an eyelet that will accept chord or yarn to make a padded satin stitch. It gives more height to the standard satin stitch as well as fills between the stitches.

@@strayblackcatsmeow , I didn’t know that! I’ll need to check my special foot.

I find the clear foot is easier to work with and gives the same great results as the special foot that came with my 401A. However, I have to replace the clear foot every few years (I do a lot of satin stitching) whereas the special foot is well over 60 years old and still in perfect working order.

    Hi Christopher,
Thanks a lot for all the videos specially 401a.
I bought one not too long ago and it was frozen so I fixed it and now it is running.
I would like to know where did you buy that long thread holder. I really need one and if possible I would like to make on my own.
I am learning to use the decorative stitch came with 401a. Some of them are working, some are not. I also need to buy the satin stitch foot like yours too.
Thanks a lot for the info. If possible can you make one video for the 401a decorative stitches , with different letter combination, also with 2 needles?
    Thanks,
    Jasmine

Hi Chris, I've done a lot of research online and every website I go to says to use "embroidery" thread when I'm embroidering. Is this true? You seem to be using regular cotton sewing thread. Also, it seems like *everyone* advises against using cotton thread for embroidery. *So my question: Is it okay to just use regular cotton sewing thread for digital embroidery?*

Where do you find a low shank slant adapter as I saw in this video when you used a satin stitch foot--I have looked everywhere. I can find low shank but not low shank slant---does the low shank work anyway on the 401a?

Love this Christopher!! Thanks for sharing. Is there any chance you could give us a search clue as to a name/type of thread you are using for this beautiful effect....I would love to search for some but don't really know what to call it.

eBay. Go there and search for cotton sewing thread. Remember I bought this years ago. I mentioned all of that in the video. This is all I can tell you.
