- Real Life 101 segment spotlights the career and educational requirements of a certified surgical technologist following a 2012 interview with Kris Gem, surgical technologist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in southwest Florida.
This was very helpful and insightful. I wish my HS had a video career day. I did consider this as a career option.
It's not too late. I went to tech school after age 50. I am now a travel surgical tech. In fact, I just left Sarasota Memorial.
Hi Shelly- you went to tech school after age 50? I'm 48 and am very interested in changing careers. Did you have any medical training background before you went to school? How do you like being a surgical tech?
Deborah
+Deborah LePow Hi Deborah. No ,I had no medical training. I was a Real Estate Broker! I really enjoy being a tech. I worked in hospital ORs for 4 years, taught Surgical Technology for 2 years, and I've been traveling as a tech for 4 years. Downside is being on call (but that is extra money) and it us stressful for some, especially when you are new. If I can be of help let me know.
Very impressed with Chris!
Excellent
the incredible responsibility these people have that is often not mentioned: COUNTS - initial counts, intraoperative counts, closing counts >> that ensure instruments and sponges do not go home in the patients body resulting in infections.........also, INFECTION CONTROL: responsible for certifying everything given to the surgeon that enters patients tissue, was properly exposed to sterile process. just these alone should elevate this job to higher pay!
Down here in Ft Myers and considering the field......until I found out the pay was 14-16$ an hour for 2 years of school...bummer
