Hi Sam, I have been a bit tardy, not watching your podcasts. As I have returned to working. Just watched Cia's podcast. Cia mentioned she had been watching your podcast and showed her Islender knits. Also Martina, "We Grow Wild" who is a knitter living in Italy. She is visiting her sister in Dublin. I mentioned she should catch up with you. But it might be hard as you work. My last and current knit is modified using thinner yarn and over it. I have my very first grandchild (granddaughter) due in July and have to get cracking and knit for her. Love the teddy bear jumper - so cute. The sock yarn must be the problem. Must be too stretchy. Try a different yarn or change from steel to bamboo needles. Re the cable jumper. The 240 stitch rule wont work with fingering weight yarn. Work out how many stitches you will need for every 10cms. Knit the body and the sleeves in the round to make it easier. Factor in positive/negative ease.
My bf saw the Islander the other day and requested one so I was keen to see what you had to say about it. Also that cable sweater... hahah. cables do contract a lot. I'd say you can try steam blocking it, but it's not going to make them 'normal' gauge.
Ahhh Rocky mistake here…I still don’t know if frogging or not! For the islender, go for it!!!! I love that design so so much! It’s my third done so far 😂
Great to see you again, Sam. Your Islender sweater is beautiful and I think the raglan shaping gave it a perfect fit. Saying that, I really enjoyed the section on Dante Alighieri - I read that back in high school and it was a nice trip down memory lane. I never realized/understood his impact on modern Italy. Makes me want to read to it again.
Oh thank you! Yeah, Dante is worth reading! In what country did you do high school? If I can ask…always amazes me that people know him outside of Italy
@@irishfarmart High school in the US. I just started reading the ebook last night and will probably buy a good version on the physical book - there are so many versions out there.
Just watched your lovely podcast. Such a joy to watch. Your jumper looks really great and always nice to see what your projects are. Thank you for talking about the Lgbtq rainbow subject, I still find it awkward, and am part of the community, so appreciate your normalisation of it. Then there was your surprise, Dante. I knew the name but nothing else, absolutely loved hearing about him and will be looking for a copy to read. Thank you Sam for your time and effort, very much appreciated ❤
Oh thanks so much! First of, yes I completely agree with the awkwardness and difficulty in speaking up loudly about lgbt issues…and I myself haven’t been the loudest member of the community by any means. Dante? Defo worth a bit of reading!!!! Full of surprises
Hello Sam, Your sweater looks amazing. I love the red touch on the sleeve, it's subtle and makes the sweater unique. I enjoy watching your channel with a cup of coffee or a beer whenever I get the chance to view it. I will be looking for a good rainbow skein to join the KAL. 🌈
You're back! Great! I love your sweater. It's gloomy and rainy here today but at least it's not snowing wet snow! I don't know what to tell you about the cable sweater. It's beautiful. Maybe you need a bigger teddy bear that will fit the sweater!!! There is too much work to frog. Can it work for a sleeve? I'd say make a pillow but I would rather see you in it as a garment. You will figure it out. I finally started making socks myself. I am over the fear! Around the beginning of Lent I would see fabulous costumes on instagram from Italy. Was that like our Marci Gras but not decadent. The costumes were exquisite. I didn't notice any " partying ". Have you seen this? Five thousand, wow. I must have been there almost from the beginning. Won't be long before a million!!! Think big!!! Lastly, you took me back to school days. There you go shaking up the memories! You have brightened my day such excitement this week. First the eclipse and now you.....what is next?!! Have fun at work! ☘️🧶☘️😁☘️☔️☘️🌈☘️
Hello!!! Sorry for the delay! Yeah you have been one of the first!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!! The jumper unfortunately was frogged, but I am trying to knit it back, in the round and with a more appropriate stitch count 😂 will see where it brings us. Also carnival! Yeah big thing over in my home town. It’s been a tradition for centuries and the costumes are just wonderful! We don’t really do partying like Mardi Gras, it’s more like parades in historic costumes and mascarades
There was a special program on Public Television here in the US recently about Dante and his “Divine Comedy”. I have made it my goal to read all three parts this year.
Hello Sam!! As a new knitter, trying to learn this amazing art, I have just discovered your videos and am finding them quite interesting. You are delightful to listen to and I have so much to learn from you. Your comments on different types of yarn are coinciding with my own thoughts about which yarns are best for each type of project, and what’s best for beginners as well. I appreciate that you share some of the struggles you have had in your learning process, as it helps me understand that my own struggles are not unique. Thank you for making these videos!!!
Oh welcome!!!! And thanks for your kind comment!!! Really means a lot. As I mentioned in the video, unfortunately I don’t have a real knitting community to learn from…and my UA-cam friends are the ones that help me in my journey through learning the art…I am still quite a beginner and I made so many mistakes! But one day we’ll get there!!! Have a great day
@@irishfarmart Most welcome! If you are still a ‘beginner’ after your years of knitting… I must be in the stone age, pre-pre-pre-beginner… with a long road ahead of me. I started this journey b/c I wI was inspired by a video about Icelandic knitting and very much aspire to make myself an Icelandic pullover sweater. I now realize that it will take quite a while to achieve that goal… but I remain undaunted. I’ve been a woodworker, a fabric worker, and am currently very much into leather work (which I love)… so, hopefully, knitting will come to me as well. As someone of Nordic heritage, I am very interested in Nordic wools and patterns… the Novita site (Finnish) is a great find (thnx for mentioning it!!). Best regards, Sven.
Agreed. Every home needs a happy Teddy Bear. Lol. For the tiny cabled pannel... could you convert it into a sleeve? I know I've made flat sleeves bottom up sleeves that looked like a rectangle for a while. It seems sad to frog all that work but also a waste to make something that will probably be too small. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍🌈 kal
You seem to knit socks using magic loop: Chiaogoo has interchangeable needles in very small sizes. I'm not sure if you can get them in Ireland, but Karbonz dpn needles also come in very tiny sizes. Those socks will last forever if the gauge is that small! Hope you can find a solution. Sweetness, I think you will need to revise your 260 (?) stitch rule. When you use textured stitches, the gauge changes. Cables especially make the fabric narrow. It's quite a mathematical and design challenge to make a dk pattern into a 4-ply pattern when it's a cabled garment. Alice Starmore may have a 4-ply cabled pattern (Virtual Yarns). It might be worth a look at her website. She may only sell kits, but her yarn is so lovely that it might be worth ordering the kit.
Hi Sam did you know that King Charles has a Teddy that he's had from childhood an he takes everywhere he goes an when it gets warn in places he has a lady in Buckingham palace don't know is she resides there or what but only she is allowed to mend his Teddy you can look it up if you like I thought it was rather endearing 😊

Wonderful to see you Islander Jumper, the Teddy Bear sweater and the socks. Best wishes for more spring.
Thank you! 😊

Great to see your projects!. The it's a Sarah podcast also made me think I should knit another of the little cotton rabbits soon.
That's a great idea!

Aw wow! That is quite a challenge! I only read a few canti…but it’s so so beautiful!
Thank you for your excerpt on Dante. It has sparked an interest. Sorry those shorty socks did not work out - I like the idea of no holes!
Aw well, what can I do! I must try again, perhaps a different yarn might make a better result

Yep, that’s an option I am considering…we are not too far off with the stitch count. We ll see

Oh thanks so much!!!! Just had a look, looks like an amazing resource! I will definitely be using that!!
That was such an eclectic mix of subjects in one podcast Sam! It was most enjoyable and interesting. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching
Seriously, your grandmother loves you SO much❤
Ahahah 😛
Use this piece as your sleeve if you can!
That’s what I am thinking 🤔 the stitch count is not too far off
