“It’s just your hand touching the steel and nothing in between”. Losing your touch here, Brandon! Your use of the word shaft in just the right spot is always something we look forward to.
Every now and then to keep the innuendos in check lol.
Yes, it’s gets pretty annoying hearing a man constantly commenting on “his shaft”. (As another man of course, maybe girls or “others” appreciate it)
This is the first concise and correct/informative video I’ve seen done on this subject.
Good to see you Brendan. I watch your stuff. Have you ever mentioned Brandon's channel? This stuff is great!
Miss you B
@@BasementBrandon You got some great content here Brandon. I bought some stuff based on your content recently. It's unfortunate it took a state of emergency to bring me to your content, but I'm glad it did. Stay safe.
I finally bought an Ohio Power Bar off the boneyard last month (literally, just last month, before the world collapsed!) based off your prior videos and some of Coop's. Thankfully, I've watched you for awhile and thankfully I listened. I love the bar and I'm enjoying it everyday right now! I also picked up last month at a huge discount, used once with the boxes, Ivanko comp 25kg plates off Craigslist because I wanted to test them out after seeing your prior Rogue comps. Needless to say, I'm happy to have the extra weight right now!!! Thank you, again.
Damn, sounds like some good gets!
I'm impressed with your refraining from sex jokes while talking about the girth, length, and hardness of different colored shafts.
Gotta playboy straight now and again.
Are we all just going to the ignore the fact that he explicitly said he doesn't like the black ones?
These videos have been great. I live in a condo complex right now, but I've already told my wife that when we eventually buy a house I will be setting up a rack so i can keep lifting during unfortunate times like this. I will definitely be referring back to these videos when the time comes. Thanks!
Thanks man! Hopefully she’s on board lol
@@BasementBrandon She didn't say no right away, so that's a good sign!
Recently got my hands on the Rogue Ohio Power Bar. Love it, best bar I've used
Good choice!
This is a very smooth match up of the video and voice over. Skillfully done
Thanks big Bob!
A video about tips on outdoor home gym equipment would be awesome. Certain coatings to stay away from this or that. I can’t be the only one that needs to build their quarantine home gym on the back porch
I get this a lot but don’t have a lot of first hand experience.
Rain and sun are your enemy. At least keep the bars dry. If you can, its not much different than the specs on a garage gym. Mine is in Miami and I used to keep everything on a screened in porch before the garage. I have a 9 year old Rogue bar version 1 that still looks great finished in the black zinc.
One of the most clearly-demonstrated and helpful videos I've seen on power bars thus far!
Glad it was helpful!
Also, i keep your playlists running the background, im super appreciative of your responses and videos.
I appreciate that
Brandon, you should pick best power bars top 5 for under 250 dollars. Top 5 bars from 250 dollars to 450 dollars. And top 5 barbells over 450 dollars. So you can cover all bases for people who new,mid level, and advance . Plus people who live in poverty, low middle class, middle class ,and upper middle class.
Might make an interesting video!
Great video dude. This is a very strange period for everyone. Saluts from Italy ❤👍.#staybig and #stayhappy
Cool to see everyone seeing how great a home gym is, but makes buying stuff hard since everything is sold out!
@@BasementBrandon Yeah
When buying a powerlifting bar there are a few things you want to consider. 1. Go to Rogue. 2. Buy the Ohio Power Bar. Stay Big.
Words to live by
Lol
You forgot the disappointment of it never being in stock
Enjoying the fact your videos aren’t 20 minutes long just to see what you recommend. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
I have two bars: BOS Bare Naked Steel and The Strength Co Corps Bar. Prefer the Bare Naked for Deadlifts and the Corps Bar for everything else.
Right on! Some good picks
thanks! this was really helpful, i was just about to buy a cerakote bar but this video made some good points and helped me decided. saved me some money too.
Glad to hear!
This short and to-the-point style vid was useful, thanks.
Thanks Will!
I ordered an Ohio Power Bar in Stainless like a week ago. Thoughts? I'll just use it for powerlifting.
Jon M I’ve had one for about 9 months and use it 3 to 4 times/week. No regrets whatsoever. The knurling is super grippy and it really helps with deadlifting and pressing.
It's an awesome bar
It’s my daily driver.
You'll feel the knurl difference and even with 495+ you will barely notice any whip. If you've only been doing a couple years I would suspect it'll tear your hands up, but it's a boon otherwise
EliteFTS Power Bar is the way to go.. great vid 👍
Have heard good things
Nobody has more experience with long shafts than you do! 😂
A cool video would be where you do one of those ranking videos focused on barbell knurl aggressiveness. A ton of people would find it useful to help them find the right bar for them!
I've thought about it but it's just been hard to get the right context since a lot of people like different things.
@@BasementBrandonif you put the Ohio power bar in the middle as a baseline and then made everything relative to that in terms of aggressiveness it would be more objective and not about what’s ‘better.’ Then someone could be like I want something slightly more or less aggressive than xyz bar and see it on the spectrum. Of course easier said than done I’m sure. Love your content and videos! ❤
@@ernestshackleton9821 Prob why I suggest the OPB to most people, especially now that you can also get thinner collars on a 20kg version, or different levels of aggressiveness with the aggro 2 or 3 🤪
What do you think of power bars vs general purpose bars? For example say I'm only currently interested in powerlifting but I might delve into weightlifting in the future, would you rather get a power bar now and an oly style bar later, or save more money and get a jack of all trades bar now?
Prob a jack of all trades makes the most sense unless you don't really care about having to buy another bar.
Possibly the top value once you can find one again is the Rogue Ohio Power Bar. I love my 20 kg version. The finish is holding up fine even living in a garage in a part of the country were it gets humid in the summer.
Yeah I just didn’t want to call it out specifically bc people already think this channel is a paid Rogue advertisement 😝
I've got the Strongarmsport powerbar and I really like it. About time to clean the barbells and try to get a decent macro of some knurl. I don't think I have any as clean as that squat bar though. Perfect pyramid.
Def one of the better knurls!
Great video. Thanks for posting this as it is good and timely information. Now let's see who has anything in stock. I'm pretty certain that that Capps has several of their Texas Power Bars in stock.
They do, but I think they're having delays shipping too
@@BasementBrandon yes they do have a wait time. I can wait it out though. This whole stay at home thing has me rethinking my schedule for when things get back to normal. I will upgrade the bar, upgrade the plates, and in time upgrade the rack. Because I haven't used the beast in a long time, I never realized that my hole spacing on the power rack is up to 1" off when comparing it side to side.
I have a cerakote bar because there was a price constraint and my gym is too humid for bare steel, but I still wholly agree with Brandon and you should get Stainless if you can!
True. My 20 kg Ohio Power Bar lives in a garage. Black zinc/bright zinc. No problems yet. I tore it down today to clean and oil it. Spins like it was new.
I do like the look of Cerakote and some companies def do a better job than others with application!
Great run down.
Thanks Rob!
recently purchased a Boneyard Ohio Powerbar woooo
Nice!!
What are your thoughts on the American Barbell Mammoth? It’s on closeout for $395 which puts it in the same price range as the Rep EX and SS OPB. Do you think the knurling will be sufficient for deadlifts assuming I use plenty of chalk? Hard to resist such a high quality bar at this discounted price 😫
Just depends. AB are a bit over priced IMO for what you get (usually a medium knurl), but if you don’t really care for super aggressive bars then 395 is a decent price.
They are well made bars, IMO. I have the Grizzly. I like it a lot. But then, I like the knurl. It is funny, it is very much a "medium" knurl but somehow it still seems grippy.
Richard Mather Agreed. I got the Mammoth and its certainly not the sharpest knurling I’ve ever used, but there’s a fine “sandpaper texture” to it that makes it nice and grippy. AB is definitely overpriced but a super solid brand IMO
From my experience with the Grizzly, the AB knurl is fine for deadlifts and great for everything else. You may even find you don't need chalk more than you would with any other bar. With chalk, I doubt you would have any problem at all. But if you want an aggressive knurl, this is not it. The AB knurl seems to have finer contact points but more of them. It is hard to describe. It does not bite into your hand, but you grab it, it is pretty solid. I hope they never change this, as it gives those of us who don't want a sharp knurl a quality bar to buy.
Solid work as always my man
Much appreciated
Very informative!
Thanks B
When I was getting started I got a full Olympic set from Dicks (when you could get 315lbs + a barbell for like $200). Thought a lot of the discussion around knurling was hype up until recently switching to a local gym that buys solid equipment. They've got this Rogue Ohio power bar that's been beaten to hell, but even still-- I think I get it now... 😂that thing is sweet
You can def get by with a little, but a lot of us like to go for a lot 😅
@@BasementBrandon man I’m just getting what I can fit into our townhouse rn. Lookin forward to having a garage one day. For now it’s an adjustable bench and some ironmasters. Your vids are a big help , feeling pretty confident in some future purchases thanks to your reviews!
@@andronickmartusheff appreciate it! can still get a lot done with the IM and bench!
Amazing video, really needed considering in the uk you cant get an opb, one question though, which material bushings would be best and which should be avoided?
I haven’t run into many issues here even with lower end copper bushings. Spin isn’t really a concern for big slow powerlifting movements.
Bells of steel recently started selling some of their most popular products on a website in the hl called something like garage strenght.co.uk i think. Check their power bar
You can get rogue stuff in the UK, I just got an echo bike and some bumpers off their site
I was recently about to buy a kadillac Bar, but then the apocalypse happened, our Canadian dollar tanked so I would now be paying $60 more, and job uncertainty so ya that's my first world problem. I just felt this was a safe place to share.
Bar looks great, I just don't like the price point and how long shipping takes with Kabuki.
For a small guy (
Into The Harshness commenting because interested in reply
They have been telling me they’ll be sending me one since they released them a year or so ago. I’ve heard the knurling isn’t great which i believe they will be fixing in V2. If you can get one for cheap go for it.
I live in Canada as well. For a smaller guy you don't need anything special. Fitness depot has bars that would be fine. When I first started that's what I got, lasted few years.
Great video. Was looking toward the bells of steel powerlifting bar 2.0, I think it's bare steel. Love an aggressive knurl. What do you think? Should I expect some defects in the bar given the price?
The review says outright there are some knurling inconsistencies but otherwise its a great bar. I'm leaning torwards buying one myself.
I have a review of this on the channel! I actually talk about that.
@@BasementBrandon Yeah I saw it already. Just wanted to see if your view had changed/updated? It looks like a solid company.
Know anything about the Okie Power Bar? Cool piece of history, supporting Crain, but concerned about QC issues.
Don't hear much about that these days, the okie deadlift bar was a staple for most but still don't hear about that much either anymore.
Hey Brandon, I was looking for a power bar and I came across the CAP Boss Bar for $205 from Texas Strength Systems website. Thoughts on this bar?
I'm generally not a huge fan of most CAP stuff. I think it depends on the price they're asking (I didn't see it on TSS). Specs on it are ok outside of the medium knurl with black phosphate finish.
The issue I have is I want a power bars features minus the knurling in the center. I prefer a smooth center.
Can get a good 28.5mm bar that will be similar.
@@BasementBrandon which 28.5mm bar do you recommend?
What are your thoughts on the Luxiaojun E1 power bar on sale for $199 shipped for black friday? Seems like a good deal but I'm not sure if I should spring and spend a bit more on say an Ohio bar
It's ok for the price. Pretty passive knurl and some hate using comp collars.
Hi Brandon, at 3:32, you show a black colored bar that has the finish, worn out. Do you know what finish that has? Thanks!
black zinc!
Hey Brandon! What mat would you recommend for a home gym?!
the 4'x6' mats from Tractor Supply Store!
Hey man, been thinking of buying a ceracoat rogue power bar, but before I pull the trigger I wanted to ask you if you have ever seen a ceracoat bar with worn coating on the bar itself? Haven't found any video detailing the coating's longevity.
I have but it’s not common. More common to see the cerakote scuff, especially if it has it on the sleeves.
@@BasementBrandon thanks for the reply, so I can assume it's a more durable coating than other variants, particularly on the shaft itself?
@@MrRoflmao1000 Cerakote is pretty tough. It survives cleaning solvents used in the gun industry. So sweat or humidity are not a big concern.
Should be!
What are your thoughts on the Vulcan Elite Power Lifting Bar?
One of the few I haven't gotten my hands on!
Can you do SORINEX recon bar!!!??? 🙏
If I get my hands on one.
Making the quarantine content the people want
Just took a pandemic for people to appreciate home gyms lol
@@BasementBrandon someone in china cloned my card last week and still waiting for the new plastic to get a barbell and at least 400lbs in plates to get the ball rolling. Already watched and/or rewatched all the videos here for racks but still confused about which to get.
Will you be doing a review on the ISF deadlift bar?
If he wants to send me one!
@@BasementBrandon hahahaha
Rep stainless steel bar is the best. Full SS is unbeatable.
Def a solid bar!
Today my ATX "powerlifting" bar arrived. It has a Nickel/Phosphor dip. The knurling is aggressive but it isnt very slip-proof. Do you ever had a dip like that? Love your videos
A lot of times new bars have a coating of oil on them to keep them from rusting while in the warehouse. Have you wiped it down yet?
@@BasementBrandon yes several times and still slippy
Is 185k PSI fine?? I bought the 2029 Power Bar from Strength Shop
I think you'll be ok
Great resource for us starting in this equipment business
Thanks for taking a look Kyle.
Nice info video! Question what finish would u recommend in a home gym? Am looking into a power bar I already have the Ohio bar e coat! Should I go with the same finish or go bare steel?
If you're in a temp controlled environment with low humidity you can do whatever you want. Bare still will just save you some $ and give you a good feel.
What are your opinions on the BoS Utility Bar?
Have not used it. Specs look to be decent for an "all around" bar.
Great video Brandon really appreciate this. Anybody have any recommendations on Bars to look at in the UK?
High end Eleiko is great, but overpriced for most. The only thing I've had first hand experience with is the Strengthshop Bastard Power Bar.
Brandon Campbell Diamond thanks for the reply!
Hey Brandon American barbell actually has a power barbell in stock (close out) for $250 I was wondering if you had any experience with this brand? If so how does it compare to the rogue power bar
Has a medium knurl, but solid build quality.
10/10 vid, God bless you
Thanks dude
How proportional is the whip on a Texas Power Bar compared to a deadlift bar? I know you said you'd never choose 28.5 and thick collars in this video, but deadlift is my best/favorite lift anyways, and since I can't afford a deadlift bar too I think I might be fine with a little whip on a power bar. Just as long as it's still pretty good for Bench/Squat (even if not as good as a 29 bar in your opinion)
Deadlift bar is going to give you a lot more whip due to the 27mm diameter and how far out the weights are pushed. But that being said a TPB will give more whip on a deadlift under heavy load than most other power bars.
@@BasementBrandon Thank you for the response!
Do you recommend sharp or medium knurling?
I like aggressive knurling as it allows for the best grip but if you have skin that's easily irritated it might not be the way to go.
Brandon, with a 3k budget and my space dimensions, would you design a gym for me? Seems to me like you’re a Visio user and can design a nice space.
3k is a solid budget! Really comes down to what you want. Rogue does have a gym builder on their site too.
What do you think about the iron cowboy power bar by Elitefts?
I have not used it. But from what I've heard it has super aggressive knurling.
Do you have any experince with the e coat on the ohio power bar?
Not first hand
I have the Ohio power bar in red cerakote. It looks great but it definitely fills in the knurl. I now wish I paid a little more and got stainless steel.
It's interesting to hear feedback on the cerakote, some say it's not that big of a difference, but I've always felt it was pretty substantial.
@@BasementBrandon I came from a black oxide Texas power bar & I immediately felt the difference. It's not bad but noticeable.
Hi Brandon, I have been looking at the Strength Shop bastard Power bar. I was told by a friend that strength shop just get Chinese imports and you can get them through ali baba for like 25% of the price. Not sure if this is correct , and has put me off. would you say the bar is worth buy through Strength shop?
I liked my Bastard power bar, not a bad choice. A lot of things come from China and a lot of things can be found on Ali baba, however to get them you usually have a minimum quantity to buy and have to go receive it off the boat. So not as easy to get as you’d think.
Good job picking a hand with a dupuytrens nodule in it lol, I have one that's why I noticed. Super annoying and can be quite painful
Didn't even notice lol
Hey Brandon, I ended up goin with the PR-5000 30in with the front feet for a rack. Now I'm considering a barbell. I'm looking at the Rep Deep Knurl or the SS OPB. I'm figuring I can't go wrong with either bar so I'm thinking I'll grab whichever one becomes available first. Sound like a good plan? Also looking at the AB-5200 for a bench. Think that's overkill or is there a better option would suggest? Thanks in advance for the feedback. 👍🏽
The AB5200 is a more "premium" bench, but one of the most affordable in that category. For the bars I think you'd like either bar, so in this case maybe get what comes in stock first.
@@BasementBrandon thanks I appreciate the feedback. Grabbed the bench and just waiting for one of those bars to come back in stock. Thanks again, I'm looking forward to having this whole thing setup.
@@blackmario88 The waiting is the hard part!
Why are there such few power racks with a width where you don't hit the rack when walking out
There are a lot!
@@BasementBrandon really? Which? Or how wide should one be, where I could still go max width grip on bench but still not hit it with a very thin barbell collar?
what length of power bar do you recommend?
Most common length is 86"
@@BasementBrandon 86 inch = 218cm ?
Had saved up a load of money for a home gym but then COVID-19 happened. Planned on buying the Rogue Ohio Bar and Calibrated Plates but now everything’s is out of stock !
Damn, tough timing
Just bought the Ohio power bar for the basement gym!
Solid pick up
Hey brandon, what do you think of the "2029 power bar" on "strenghtshop.de"?! I am from Greece and it is really hard to find something on the cheaper side that ships to Greece..
I would pass, not rated for much weight and is 185k PSI
I stumbled across an old video and you said black zinc was better than bare steel and now this video says you suggest bare or stainless...
The black zinc ended up wearing off over time and dulls the feel of the knurling slightly. Personally I'd rather go bare steel or stainless as knurl is most important to me.
Brandon Campbell Diamond Yup, I ordered a bare steel. Hopefully with regular maintenance it’ll stay rust free for me.
Update: Got my bare steel OPB delivered and it feels and looks amazing. Hoping it’ll stay rust free with some weekly 3in1 oil
which aggressive knurl powerbar would you recommend?
which one is your favorite?
I actually use my SS OPB the most but I wouldn’t say that’s the most aggressive.
Do you like your Rep Power Bar EX? I only ask as I don’t see you using it too often in your training videos. I have one and love it for squats and bench, but don’t love the knurl for deadlifting
I love it and use it a few times per week. My issue is I have so many bars I end up rotating through them all the time.
Brandon Campbell Diamond kinda figured that haha. I love it for squats and bench, still use my OPB for deadlifts and I guess I like the “grippy” feel on deadlifts more than the “sharp” feeling
@@KFaggella3 Do you mind telling me more about why you prefer the sharp feeling on squats and bench? I've read about others not liking the OPB knurl on squats, but digging it for deadlifts.
Thoughts on the Force USA power bar?
Initial specs look promising but some things are concerning like the factor has bearings as well (unwanted for power bars), a weight tolerance variance and a straightness accuracy rating. It also states aggressive knurl but lists less than .5mm knurl height. Prob not the worst bar out there but for the list price you can get better bars.
@@BasementBrandon thanks! Really appreciate the breakdown
Hey Brandon, thoughts on Eleiko Performance Powerlifting Bar?
It’s a great bar but it’s priced pretty high. You could get a very comparable bar for half the cost and put the extra funds into other equipment. Just depends on budget!
Thanks for your response man. Appreciate it.
Texas power bar's are on the lower end and very good.
Yeah have to get what you can at this point!

0:58 ...And that's how a Buffalo Bar is made, children! Any questions?
I literally imagine this to be true for the first Titan one.
Hey Brandon, great video! I made the mistake of not looking at tensile strength and looking at weight load (1000 pounds) before buying my first bar. I got a cap on-86b due to budget and it’s tensile strength is only 110k. It doesn’t have much bend or whip right now but the most I put on the bar is usually 365 for squats and deads for reps. Is there a danger to the bar deforming and even breaking... I don’t slam the bar when dropping or use it for extremely explosive movements? I’m looking to get the Bells of steel bare naked bar but they’re out of stock for now. Thanks again for the great content!
I know plenty of people who are more than happy with their CAP equipment. I’d keep using it until it breaks or until you just feel like upgrading!
Brandon Campbell Diamond thanks for the reply Brandon! Been enjoying all the new material regarding home gyms lately!
I like your videos but you are incorrect about tensile strength
I disagree.
Where I live the only brand that isn’t completely sold out is Eleiko, so I guess I wasn’t going to use my kidneys anyways
Great bars, just a premium price.
💪
Thanks man!
I wonder if that bar bending was real? Was pretty funny.
Sure was. Believe Joe said it was a York bar if I recall correctly.
I’m thinking of getting a fat bar, but that would be my only bar for SBD OHP, would there be any issues with this? Also, any suggestions for fat bars?
Like an axel? would make grip very difficult. usually not knurled that much if at all either.
Brandon Campbell Diamond Yeah, I’m more concerned about squatting with one than the other lifts though
What do you think of the xmark 7' bar? Its rated up to 700 pounds byt I am wary of my because it is an extreme budget bar
Paul Wright don’t buy it. Spend some extra cash and you won’t regret your purchase. $300 for a bar with a lifetime warranty should be a pretty easy and smart purchase to make
Is that the lumberjack bar? If so it’s 25mm which usually means a womens or training bar. Regardless with a 700lbs rating I’d pass.
@@donovanjoyce965 the thing is that I've got a total budget of around 600 and the rack I'm looking at costs 250-300 already
@@BasementBrandon quick question: if a bar is rated for X pounds how far below should you actually load it up to?
Most decent bars you won’t come close. Low weight ratings are usually a sign of cheap steel
When you just bought a bar at 150k PSI and saw this video after
Haha it'll still work, just some stuff to look for!
Step 1: Find one in stock.
Rep fitness power bar EX is still in stock I believe.
in this video ua-cam.com/video/CHsWV5bLBgc/v-deo.html you recommended a zinc coated bar for corrosion resistance, but in this one a bare one is recommended, which one is better?
The problem with that video is that at that time the black zinc was still in good shape (it fades). My views have changed a bit in that time as I would rather sacrifice some more maintenance for a better feel and better looking bar. This also largely depends on the environment it's kept in.
The real question is how do I get plates without spending $500
Market is tough these days. Hope you can find something local 2nd hand.
What if the knurl is so sharp that is messes up my deadlift lockout because it sticks to my skin above knees? Bought ATX Ram bar and was kinda dissapointed, otherwise amazing bar, thankfully after some time it became easier to use it for deadlifts.
In comps people put baby powder on their thighs for this reason. Prob don't want to get into that at home though lol.
@@BasementBrandon True, the reason why I use my strength shop 2029 power bar for deads and Atx ram bar for everything else. Probably gonna buy ohio stainless PB because I loved deadlifting on it in gym that had it 23 km from me.
Bought ATX because I am poor intern and stainless ohio PB costs almost 600 euros here in EU.
