    I put a thin plastic lid with some rice grains, then I put my fruit on there- and it stops mold.

    Awesome video! I breed dubia roaches myself and I'm hoping to get a whole bunch of dubias for my reptiles!

    I also make a large tray of Repashy Bug Burger and then cut it into chunks, stick them in the freezer, and just break off a few when I need it. I put them (once thawed- usually in about an hour- on the dry rice-lined plastic lid, so it doesn't cause mold. They love it and its full of vitamins- only have to prep once for the entire year.

    How large of a colony would I need if I’m only feeding one adult bearded dragon? I would want to only maintain the size of the colony without it growing, while only creating enough to feed to my beardie. I’m not interested in selling surplus roaches, but I also would rather not destroy them wastefully if possible. Ultimately I’m trying to decide whether it is better to buy them or raise them.

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  3 роки тому +1

      I would not even do a colony for one beardie. Would be a very small colony that would eventually explode beyond what you need anyway.

    I've had my adults for about 2 weeks now and still no babies! 😔

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  5 років тому +2

      Not exactly sure to be frank. I would say I noticed dramatics growths in colony size from 1-2 months of start. If you are just starting your colony, you may need to let it go for several months. Not just for babies (as you should definitely have some by then), but you do not want to deplete your colony while its establishing itself. This could lead to "gaps" where there are no feeders available since the colony is in a growth stage. A lot of this can be sped up though with more adults in the colony. If a month hits and you see no babies, try fiddling with the temperature. Some people believe their colonies do better in temps a little lower than what I stated in the video.

    Great video- thank you! I've recently had a male roach die-off...lost 3 in 3 days...not sure what's going on- females are fine- numbers should be good ratio-wise...their wings looked a bit brittle and decrepit...they had water, and the temps should have been good. Any ideas?

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  4 роки тому +1

      Only thing I can think of is the males fighting (because of their wings). Could just be a coincidence though. Notice any nymphs go missing?

    • @sugetoosty1685
      @sugetoosty1685 4 роки тому

      Thanks! Hadn't noticed any, but it's a small colony, so we don't have that many nymphs- maybe 1 every 2 weeks or so...and my bearded dragon can down a whole litter within a day or 2. I've added 1000 small ones from another colony to improve bloodlines (as I know that is needed or they start to die out from inbreeding). Hopefully that will help. Thanks for the tip on the wings---wondered why they looked so ragged.

      Mine have been dying off too, small ones and big males with wings.
      it looks like they are deformed like they're coming out of their shell but can't fully come out.
      I don't know what's going on over the summer everything was good they were breeding everything now they are dying off nothing's changed food wise except I bought roach Chow from the breeder I don't know if it was accidentally contaminated I have taken it out but they are still dying off

    So im thinking of getting a fire skink and a friend of mine is getting a beardie i want to start breeding some dubia roaches but im worried they might breed out of control what should i do if i find i have too many? Just kill some off and throw them away?

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  5 років тому +1

      Honestly never heard of someone breeding to many dubia roaches. A good way to curb the population is to use a more constrained enclosure. Just like natural ecosystems, the environment in which they live will have a threshold of how many roaches it can support based on food/water/space/etc. By restricting space, you can lessen (or increase) that threshold. I wouldn't recommend doing this through food/water.

    • @matthewotremba9230
      @matthewotremba9230 4 роки тому +1

      Do not stop before you start , you will need your colony enclosure , a second bin the same size for transferchanging/cleaning (2 screen lids optional) Separation buckets with graded holes drilled in the bottom of each one . With half inch holes in one with three eighth holes in another , and the final with quarter inch holes , oh an a catch bucket . A proper ratio of mommy's and daddy's , and , a heat source for any active container

  • @colleeneichenlaub9949
    @colleeneichenlaub9949 5 років тому

    I’ve always heard the ratio was 1 male to 5 female?
    I’ve never sprayed my bin either I usually worry more about it being too humid not adding in moisture.
    Do you feed directly from your bin or have a separate container you feed off of. I’ve heard too much acidity like from orange are bad for reptiles. Good for helping roaches breed but not to feed gut loaded to reptiles

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  5 років тому

      Oranges are fine to feed to roaches in lower frequencies. They just really love them! Just like when feeding your reptile, diversity is best when feeding your roaches. I take directly from my bin and put those roaches in a separate bin to gut load for two days then I feed them off. Spraying is fine but I do focus more on providing moisture through their food than spraying nowadays. You can really never go wrong with having to many females. Obviously there is a point where it does not increase productivity, but should not cause problems. Can't really say more though since I have never fiddled with numbers like that when breeding the roaches.

    • @alphagamerextras9797

      In my opinion the best ratio of roaches is 1 male to 3 females

    but is it worth doing this for two geckos or is it better to just go grab some from my local shop

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  4 роки тому

      depends on pricing I guess. And if you rather pay than do a little extra work. I do not think there would be much of a price difference either way with two geckos. If you anticipate having more reptiles in the future then get a colony. Takes awhile to build up.

    Speaking of dubia's There are thousands, in my colony
    Stand the egg crates on end and put a simple , smaller cardboard divider between each , the egg crates
    slide out easy without binding , and all can climb up to the fruits and veggies placed on top of them . The other floor space reserved for water crystal dish and treat food dish . Treats for mine are any mouse and worm parts that do not get eaten by my baby/adult garters , the dried Pangea mix that my geckos leave behind , fish flakes , krill ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, THEY WILL EAT YOUR GARBAGE . Which they do , as I get the veggie scraps from my favorite deli , FREE
