I have had hsu subs in my theater for about 13 yrs now and couldn't be happier. (4) 12's stacked in the front and 2 15's in the rear- best bang for the money...
After lots of research (online only unfortunately) I finally made up my mind and bought two of the VTF-TN1 subs. I'm very very impressed and so glad I chose them.
With the ported Hsu subs, in my opinion, the EQ1 with 1 port open is definitely the way to go! I’ve had the VTF-3 MK5 for 7-8 years now and it’s been great!
@ I have mine at 0.7 for the flattest bass response. I tested from 0.5 to 0.7 with REW and couldn’t tell much difference but 0.7 was better for me in a larger room.
Have you tried EQ2 with two ports open? I have a large family room with kitchen/dining area attached, and that opens up to a larger space. I have two VTF3 MK5's, which is similar, but a bit smaller. I never pushed these subwoofers to the limit, but from what I read on Audioholics review of this subwoofer, it seems to start hitting its mechanical limits at the very low frequencies. Audioholics was mentioning to run this subwoofer in EQ2 at all times. Also, I felt one 4 inch port for a beefy 15 inch driver is sort of small and could result in port noise.
Thanks for this awesome review! I've been using HSU subwoofers for 20 years and they have always kept me coming back for more. I'm planning to upgrade my dual VTF-2's to a pair of TN1's in early 2025.
Great job once again! 😎👍🏼 I got 4 of those and had to send 2 back. lol 😂 4 was more thin my house can handle plus my wife was complaining about things, shaking, and pictures falling. lol 😂 love these subwoofers.
What volume level did you play them at? You should turn them down, not send them back. because 4 subs, when calibrated, should give you better, smoother bass control in the room.
I have the VTF3-MK5 since 2015, best subwoofer for the money. It is incredible, so glad for these REW plots across the tuning combinations.. I've kept my sub fully sealed on EQ2 for 8 years... had no idea 1 port open EQ1 puts out that much bass extension. I have the instruction manual but these are the first results I've seen. So awesome youthman! Gonna change my configurations and play around with the settings now that I can see the freq response and output. Great job!
Bought one right after I saw the video. Been on the fence for months waiting for this review. Because I knew if this Bass Maniac is happy, I would be happy. Thank you Sir, it will be here on Friday.
I brought one of his original subs 12"" cylinders back in the late 90s used it till about 4 years ago. Met Dr Hsu at the Waldorf Astoria ( Stereophile Audio show) about 1995? Realy Excellent Demos. Really Really Nice down to Earth Man Dr Hsu is!!
You know what would be cool? Nobody reviews their speaker line and they look very intriguing. Those horn bookshelves and the big ones with 8" drivers. It is nice to see a HSU sub review, you might be the first. You never see it.
I was able to hear the PB-17 this week @ Grid HiFi in Houston TX. That subwoofer is an absolute beast ! Sitting offset of the sub about 9 feet away in a very large room , the air from the ports were moving my pants legs😂. The best subwoofer I have ever heard by far !
That is correct. I should’ve mentioned it in this video as well. I wish it was a little more bold than simply buried in the middle of the owner’s manual.
Been waiting on this review, great job on the details. I’m trying to get an endgame setup, 4 of these or two rhythmic f18s. Very hard to decide. I currently have hsu uls-mk2 and a rel 1205. They both sound great in my living room but I’m moving and I’m sure I’ll be in a much bigger space.
I have three of the CCB8’s and All I can say is that they sound phenomenal. But they are somewhat selective with how you place them. Incredible presence though and probably the best center channel I have ever heard.
@@bingdong8571 They are plenty loud for a medium to large size room. They are too large for a small theater (anything where you are sitting less than 8’ from the screen). People do not realize how large these speakers are until you have them in person. Just to give you an idea, I also have the Monolith tower speakers (the giant ones with the atmos speaker on top) the CCB-8s have better imagine and sound more holographic compared to the Monoliths, which are fantastic three way speakers to begin with.
Nice review but the real nugget of gold was the frequency response comparison between your living room and theatre. Sound advice to use two subs minimum to smooth the raggedy small room response. . Peak output measurements showing onset of compression would have been a great a addition. I always appreciate your contributions to the hobby through this channel, AVS Forms, and everything in between.
Well, I watched your video last night, and now I just bought one!!! If it’s everything I think it will be, I’m buying another one next month. Haha, this channel has cost me some 💰, in a good way. Thanks for the good review.
Great video. It’s weird that your umic is clipping at that level. You should be good up to 120 dbs or so. Also, these video are very informative and probably pretty time consuming. Using a processor or avr with Dirac bass control will make the setup easier in my opinion. Bass control does an amazing job It would be really kool if you could run 2 subs in your reviews to show how they work together for improved performance. Bass control would shine here as the setup would be pretty straightforward.
I bought a pair of these to serve as reference subs for my Techsponential / Home Theater View theater. Haven't reviewed them yet, and don't think I'll ever run them loud enough to justify buying them over less expensive subs from HSU or SVS. But my pair of Outlaw Audio LFM-1's were 20 years old and one stopped working, so I went for overkill.
Wish they would have kept the VTF-15H MK2 style. Love that style with the triangle ports. Plus I don't care about the depth, it's the height I have problem with because I use a tv stand and my room is not wide to put the subwoofers farther apart.
Yeah, sub placement in the room is rarely going to be correct if you put them under your main front speakers; placement is crucial with subs so you put them in the places where they serve you best. Every time you see someone with a nice, pretty setup with the two subs symmetrically placed around the display it's a surefire bet that they're not getting the most out of their subs. These have intrigued me since they first came out, but shipping to where I am would be more than $100. And then there'd be taxes and customs to deal with as well. But, a solid deal for some serious subs, clearly. A pair of these would still be way less than just a single SVS 17 incher. Sure, the SVS is going to beat one of these but I doubt it would embarrass them. And you can get four of these cheaper than two SVS 17s.
Hey Michael, long time follower here. I have seen you mess with REW here and there, but I’ve always been curious. Do you tune your own system or have someone help remote calibrate?
When did you get this in?! This sub is my first choice for what I’m looking for! 🎉 plus it has high level inputs so I’m hoping the sub 20hz performance is everything it seems to be! 🎉
Very nice video Youthman. I really like this sub. I believe the power cable is on the thin side because of the low power output. I believe only 12-14 gauge is more than enough for the short run and power rating. 👍
Yeah, like I said, it probably doesn’t change affect performance, but like you said, it just feels really thin and not like your typical round thicker power cable.
I was really thinking about a HSU but I ended up pulling the trigger on the Klipsch RP-1400sw through the slick deals / adorama sale for $699 free shipping. Feel like that price to performance was hard to beat.
I recently received an Omega System 1100 home theatre system without any cables (free is free, though) The power cables are there, but the rest is not. Do you have any advice on where I may go online to get them? Thus far, my hunt has been in vain. If you have time, thanks!
Looking for honest feedback here on purchasing. I’m pulling the trigger this week on either two of the TN1s or a single SVS PB17. Which would be a better way to go? Roughly 12x14 room with all RP klipsch speakers. Looking for the most output.
It would be difficult to tell, which would perform better without having them both in the same room and taking measurements of both. I have no experience with the PB 17 to know how it compares
@ My initial thought was 2 tn1s would be better than a single sub. But that PB17 so far seems like an animal. Maybe I’ll wait until more comes out about that pb17.
I have 2 jtr 2400 subs and am thinking of getting 2 more of these hsu subs for backs do you think they would play well together and would the hsu subs help pressurize the room and add some more impact ?
@@Roel-o5ojust one JTR definitely is enough its just that i want atleast 4 subs in the room at all four corners or nearfield behind the seats for a bit more punch
I’m thinking of getting two maybe three, how big is your room and how do they sound? Would that be endgame for you? I’m coming off their sealed sub and it’s really good but I’m moving to a bigger space in a new house.
@ My space is rather large. It’s L shaped, with one leg of the L being 20x40 feet and the other leg 30x40 feet, 9 foot ceilings. That said the theater is curtained off in a corner that’s 17x14 but of course the curtains do nothing to contain the low frequency. 3 of them is plenty for that space and it’s flat down to 16 Hz at 110 dB. I do supplement with tactile transducers in the couch to get the tactile feel without too much pressure in the room. Too many raves have left my hearing very sensitized. I’m happy with them. I protect them with a compressor and a limiter.
@@glfporsche1 that is a large space. I believe I’m going in a 16 by 20 space so was just wondering how may of these subs to get. Trying to get an endgame status for a long while. Don’t have money for jtr subs but I do for a few of these.
Another great review, Michael thank you. I am having trouble deciding between the.Hsu vtf tn1 or the arendal 1723 1V that you have also auditioned. I would really love and appreciate your opinion on which of these two subs do you like better personally I am not real concerned about bass below 18 hertz. I’m all about the quality of bass. But at the same time low extension is important of course. I presently on to SVSPB 4000s. Svs has gotten to be too expensive here in Canada so I was looking towards the Arendal or HSU companies. Looking forward to hearing from you, Michael.
The Arendal 1V is much denser cabinet and has more flexibility with their app. The magnetic grill stays on the Arendal. Huge difference in price. Performance wise, both are great subs.
Hi Michael. Thank you for the super speedy reply. I know the build quality of the Arendal is superior and you can’t beat their warranty as well. Yes a huge difference in price that’s for sure but I’m OK with that. I have a dedicated home theatre approximately 25 feet long by 11 feet why my pee before thousands rest of the back of the room and I would be placing the rentals in the front two corners behind my critically transparent screen. Are you leaning more towards the Arendal. and are you going to be doing a full review on them soon? Thanks again for everything. Love your channel.
A friend of mine asked this: “Why would Dr Hsu design an incorrect sized grill? I have not read anyone else having that issue. (the grill popping off repeatedly)”. He’s thinking you may have just got a defective grill. 🤷♂️
Does the subwoofer have parametric eq? So you can lower frequencies there are too many of, due to the room? It's much more important than all the stupid preset choices that never do what you wanted
Eh I think part of the cost here means you want to supplement with reciever eq. As you might imagine, the core performance of this works great with dirac bass control
I don't think the amplifier with such a small heatsink really delivers 600 watts rms. Remember that this is a class AB amplifier and the stated wattage is often incorrect. often this is measured in 10% thd! watt sells
Thank you for the great review. It was the reason I bought Dual TNF1s. Do you think I can lay it on its side with the port facing the wall? Previously, I had a single SVS PB-4000. The HSU has more midbass. The SVS plays a little more clean and clinical, if you like that. I do miss the app control with SVS, which can come in handy when you watch movies with different types of people. Interstellar shook my chandelier caps off.
I'm not rich enough to buy disc's or especially Kaleidescape so I have downloaded all my 4K HDR movies from the very fine gentleman who does all the remux uploads and it's a lot better the streaming The most recent one I watched was the new bad boys movie 🍿 fully I must say the picture now was very really really really amazing PQ definitely a reference movie for the visuals especially the opening scene the first 5 minutes is amazing It was a fun movie to watch for sure!
With a woofer that plays that sloppy, I could see it being fun, but with little control. It looks like it would exaggerate the bass like no tomorrow. A Rythmik would be the polar opposite of this thing.

Thank you for doing this review! I am still amazed there are not many reviews on this sub. Seems to be a home run! Decision time!
I preordered two to prep for a move, got them delivered in August. I will not be replacing them anytime soon! Absolutely phenomenal subs.

@@Roel-o5ojust one JTR definitely is enough its just that i want atleast 4 subs in the room at all four corners or nearfield behind the seats for a bit more punch
All three of mine toss the grills off. I just gave up putting the grills on.
Ok so it wasn’t just me 🤣
@ Yea I think they just need a little more clearance Clarance. lol Otherwise I love them!
I meant to say SVS pb 4000s lol
A friend of mine asked this: “Why would Dr Hsu design an incorrect sized grill? I have not read anyone else having that issue. (the grill popping off repeatedly)”. He’s thinking you may have just got a defective grill. 🤷♂️
It very well could be. I’m just sharing my experience with it.
Someone else just commented that they have three of them and all three keep tossing the grills so they finally gave up putting them on.
I have 2 of these subs and have been running them for several months with no grill detachment. Perhaps there was a limited manufacturing issue?
Have mine for 6 months and love it.
Ya mean I've got to watch both Dune films again? Well, okay I will...... if I have to. 😉😁
I put in Maverick to listen to the demo at 2min 15s and it's the intro to the movie?
It’s not start of movie it’s one of the attack runs
2min 15 seconds is the name of the scene on Kaleidescape. It’s where he is doing the test run to see if he can make the flight in under 2min 15 sec.
The scene is probably 3/4 the way through the movie
Give us your demo script!!!!!
I might go dual as well, so a single pb-4000 is better than a single tn1? How about music which is better for you?
I'm not rich enough to buy disc's or especially Kaleidescape so I have downloaded all my 4K HDR movies from the very fine gentleman who does all the remux uploads and it's a lot better the streaming The most recent one I watched was the new bad boys movie 🍿 fully I must say the picture now was very really really really amazing PQ definitely a reference movie for the visuals especially the opening scene the first 5 minutes is amazing It was a fun movie to watch for sure!
Ah, would like to chat about this if able
PS 2 of these for about $ 2400.00
This subwoofer cover needs to be put on glue and don't use it a few days so that the glue dries well 🤣👍
With a woofer that plays that sloppy, I could see it being fun, but with little control. It looks like it would exaggerate the bass like no tomorrow. A Rythmik would be the polar opposite of this thing.
Which Rythmik do you have?
