    Lyrics:
There must be some way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
    There's too much confusion
    I can't get no relief
    Businessmen, they drink my wine
    Plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line
Know what any of it is worth
    No reason to get excited
    The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
    The hour is getting late
    All along the watchtower
    Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
    Barefoot servants, too
    Outside in the distance
    A wildcat did growl
    Two riders were approaching
    The wind began to howl

“I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day.
I liked Jimi Hendrix’s record of this and ever since he died I’ve been doing it that way. Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it’s a tribute to him in some kind of way.”

I think Dylan intensely disliked 'psychedelic' music from '67 onwards, and had little time for the Woodstock festival in '69 - including 'Sgt Pepper'. This sounds like a retrospective view to me.

The businessmen are removed from the physical labor that goes into making the wine. The Plowmen aren't knowledgeable about the "value" of the things they make, in an economic sense. Neither alone has a complete picture.
Musicians often see "both sides of the tracks." Coming from humble beginnings, and then making a lot of money. That's probably what the Joker means when he says, "but you and I, we've been through that." Just my take on it.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. It makes me feel an indescribable feeling every single time I listen to it. What an utterly brilliant song. ❤

When you listen to Bob's version a person listens for the lyrics. When you listen to Jimmies version a person is so inundated by his guitar riffs that they overtake Bob's song.

Yeah though Dylan's vocals are a lot better as well a fact Hendrix admitted "Dylan just said it so well". The constriction Dylan places upon his voice as he sings "There must be some way out of here...."

I love how he says Out in "There must be some way out of here" not only is it so Dylan, but it also sets the mood of the song.
