    George Harrison and Bob Dylan were truly good friends that went way back to 1964 and they created Rock's greatest supergroup with the Travelling Wilbury's.

      And then there's Jagger there, he really didn't make many friends over the years. George was a people person, same with Ringo and Clapton, and Bob played with lots of people, too.

    Bob looked confused and anxious as hell. There’s George, always around to save and hold it all together 🤍 I love them together. It’s so sad that George had to go so early, the world is missing him. It’ll be a sad, sad day when Bob’s time comes. 🥺

    This is the first time I’ve really looked at all of this RxR Hall of Fame stuff closely since it happened ( mainly because I’ve been bedridden with this god awful Coronavirus). I get a real kick out of everyone being a critic! Of course you have every right to critique things after all everyone has an opinion.if I can let me try to clear up some misconceptions. I think I have a unique position in that I happened to the person in charge of the band gear on stage that night. Pairing up musicians with guitars, tuning up guitars etc.( does Jeff Beck get a 1950’s Fender Telecaster, does Dave Edmunds get a Gibson ES 335 - you get the point).in no way was the first couple of RxR Hall of Fames supposed to be for public consumption. They were not broadcast and the tapes were meant for the Hall of Fame archives only. The event took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel grand ballroom and was a sit down black tie. $1000 a plate dinner. and awards ceremony to raise money to construct the actual RxR Hall of Fame building.The point was to honor the great musicians from the early years of rock and roll who laid the foundation that got us to where we are today. Nobody came to the first few award dinners thinking they needed to or where going to perform for the public.They came to honor those that came before them have dinner get drunk and have a good time. Nowadays the RxR Hall of Fame ceremonies are completely different in that the bands being inducted practice for weeks before the show and bring their lighting designers and sound men with them so they don’t miss a cue. Back in the beginning it was more like a wedding reception where at the end of the night you got drunk and started stealing the microphone from the wedding band to sing and have fun.Of course it was chaos ! These absolute legendary musicians just wanted a chance to hang out with their legends. Bob Dylan told me being able to stand next to Little Richard was unbelievable for him. I remember standing between Billy Joel and Neil Young during all the confusion on stage and asking Neil’ you like this ?” And having Neil reply “ are you kidding this is the most fun I’ve had in years’. Our idols got to meet their idols! Poor Paul Shaffer was tasked to try and keep things orderly and he went down swinging only because everyone was too busy having fun and not worrying what they looked like. A strange concept in today’s socially conscious world. If I had a choice I would certainly take the former over the latter RxR Hall of Fame ceremonies. It was innocent it was fun and unfortunately those days are gone. Ed

      That’s an amazing memory. You are beyond lucky to have been working on the show that night and to meet so many influential legends all at the same night. Definitely something I would remember forever, but I can only dream of it until perhaps one day they make a time machine and then I’ll get to experience these legacies first hand 😂
      I hope you are recovering from the virus, as well. Sending my thoughts and prayers to you. We are losing so many people who’s time to go shouldn’t be for a long, long time from now. All because people don’t know how to stay inside and wash their hands... Anyways, amazing story and I hope you’re feeling better now.

    Thank goodness George Harrison was there to clue Dylan into what was happening there. Obviously Bob had nothing to do with the planning or execution of this performance...but it seemed like everyone else was in on it. Only George seemed to realize that Dylan was needing some guidance into the planned tribute that they had worked out with out consulting Dylan first.

    no one can enunciate and phrase words like dylan, his timing with the phrasing, the feeeel in the enunciation and the emphatic dynamics of the vocal. he is a pure natural. even with the changes in his voice as he gets older, compare his phrasing to George's when they first start
    christmas just passed, and i had never listened to dylan's xmas album, Christmas in the Heart before, though it's been out for several years. i listened it to it, picking songs here and there rather than the whole playlist, and something about them, i connected with, even though i haven't been into xmas carols since i was a kid. He did his interpretation of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and i realized, as it was just kind of playing in the background, that although that song has played commercially most or all of my life, i never really heard most of the words before, but with Dylan singing them, they pulled me in and i heard them for the first time, and related to them. rock on dylan

    Wow, George Harrison really bailed out Dylan.
    I've seen a lot of his performances....he really was not ready or able to do this one.

    This has got to me a mixer's nightmare. Nobody knows whos mic is up, nobody is where they said they would be, you can't see a thing, all the timing is random, and everyone is playing something..... still, a slice of history having everyone on one stage, no matter how crowded. Balagan, balagan balagan. Yet I like it. :)

      @Ubu987 3 роки тому +2

      There are two canonical versions of the song, Bob's and Jimi's, and both were being played by different contingents of the crowd present. They are different enough to clash rhythmically, resulting in musical chaos.

    • @bamai59
      @bamai59 3 роки тому +2

      @@Ubu987 That would account for part of it, though you might expect them to rally around the original composer, who is standing right there in the middle. All in all, I would have loved to have been there, but this is one song, that as a sound mixer, I'm glad I wasn't part of. :)
      The MHF got better at this over the years, maybe this recording is the reason why.

    Imagine in the age of ProTools with every track recorded. The mix that could’ve happened after the fact.. regardless, an impossible bunch of cattle to herd at that moment....still fun to watch after all these years

    Yes, it was messy, but honestly, once upon a time, that was what rock n' roll -was-. And did anyone notice how utterly peeved Mick Jagger was to be shoved into the background? (serves him right)

      Simply because Mick Jagger believes he is still the King of sumthing? Prissy bitch. Not to detract from what The Stones have always been, a most awesome rock and roll band. Just remember folks, "You Can't Always Get Want you Want." But just try sometimes, you'll find what you need....

    Don't take it too seriously. Cool to see so many amazing people together. Yeah the sound sucked. They weren't trying to make a masterpiece although I'm sure they would have loved it to turn out so. Just putting on a show the best they could with 100 people. Should have chosen a different song, but still would likely have been a train wreck.
