  • Our guest this week on #SWYSI is long-standing BBC Journalist Robin Aitken MBE. Robin is the author of "Can We Trust the BBC?" And "The Noble Liar", in which he examines why and how the BBC is biased against conservatism. Robin was the first guest on #SWYSI in January 2019 and so it is a great pleasure to welcome him back just over a year later to reflect on the scenario we now face: a conservative government with a strong majority unwilling to play the BBC game and a clear desire to shake up the institution.

I used to love listening to Radio 4, however it has now become so 'woke' that I find myself switching off the radio continually.
Just last night I was listening to a programme which appears to be deeply racist. One of the people on the show said, unchallenged, that anyone who complained about the show would be "hijacked by white supremacists" - I simply turned off the programme in disgust.

My drive into work would consist of me listening to the Radio 4 Today programme and waiting for the first "woke" assertion to get snuck in either by the presenter, the news item or guest. It literally takes a couple of minutes before "white male", "toxic masculinity", "the first female/gay/lgbt/disabled/Black/Asian (insert blank)", "patriarchal Western colonialism", "representation", "equity", "Islamaphobia", "the female wage gap" etc get trotted out as if they simply self evident realities. I turn off the radio without fail. And I used to love the Today programme. As for the rest of the programmes there is rarely a magazine show, drama, comedy, political show that isn't riddled with these ideological perspectives. That's not to mention the special feature programmes that focus entirely on a Woke topic and surprise, surprise, end up always being in favour of it. I can still enjoy "In Our Time" and "The Life Scientific" but even then I'm on tenter hooks. Exasperating.

Case in point, a majority do not support the BBC, though I would accept a majority don't know any better and that number is shrinking by the day. I will agree with "I don't watch Dr Who" because as a lifetime fan, as are my kids, we don't watch it either - new Dr Whoke is absolute drivel, epitomising the BBC's attitude.

    • @Matmus

Atkins is part of the old school media. You know the bbc was set up to raise the intelligence levels of the general public, to introduce them to high culture. Understand that’s very different to sneering at the general public but yes he is of a different class than most of us. He’s going to be more reasonable and there’s nothing wrong with that but if you listen to what he’s saying he’s being quite damming in a polite way.

    • @purpuradraco3747
      @purpuradraco3747 4 роки тому +15

@@Matmus I get that. Being polite costs you nothing but the problem is we're long past polite in so many respects. When the woke are calling us all bigots, and worse, for daring to not follow the 8%'s insane narrative, while deliberately stiffing the conversation with endless complaining and cancel culture, it's time to start putting our foot down. Pussyfooting around these liars, who are themselves fascistic bigots, just grants them some form of legitimacy. They have no legitimacy.
To discuss the topics they support will necessarily involve dismissing them from the conversation because they refuse to allow a conversation and therefore including them gets us absolutely nowhere. It's the same principle that would force you to dismiss your 3 year old's input on when bedtime is, only worse because these are adult babies who know exactly how to manipulate and who clearly refuse to be reasoned with. They have proved this time and time and time again while the BBC is one of the worst culprits, the main woke propagandist arm. Even when they pay lip-service to a conversation what do we see if not 3 vs 1 panels, hosts taking sides and so much shouting down and talking over the top of opinions they do not wish aired. And that's just one small part of how biased they are.

08/23/23: I was working for State Street Bank & Trust (USA) back in the 1980s, in a huge bank vault. The big cheeses wanted good PR, so they yanked my co-worker out of the vault, brought him upstairs to the presentable part of the bank, gave him a neck tie to wear and then parked his butt in a vacant executive office.
Then CBS "News" came down from midtown to do a story on how the bank was going full blast with a diversity-hiring program. Proof, Lo & Behold! Here was "Pedro," an executive-in-training.
"Pedro" in real life was almost illiterate and definitely was not in an executive-training program, an elevation that he never would have been qualified for unless the contest had been rigged. Which it had.
And this was straight-face presented by the American BBC, CBS, as an accurate "news" story.

Many people who were seeking clarity, found only biased opinion which was so obvious to either side of the debate. There has been strong evidence of bias since the Referendum campaign, through the last election and on to now. It is not shown by what the BBC says about any particular issue (global/climate crap excepted) but how they show lack of respect to people of certain viewpoints, whilst according a great deal of respect to people of certain other viewpoints. This has been evidenced in several interviews where Conservative or Leave politicians have been asked a question and not given the right to an interrupted reply. If the interviewee actually gets a chance to reply which the interviewer does no like the same question will be asked over and over again. Yet same interviewer will give Left wing or Remain politicians time to answer questions and like as not not even question the interviewee further on the same subject.
When it comes to the Climate debate the BBC has lost the plot and accepted as gospel the climate scaremongers claims and "evidence" even when these claims have not been born out over the last 30 years by facts, when outlandish claims and warnings are not even questioned.
Increasingly it feels like the BBC is not fulling its duty to educate, inform and entertain, but rather it indulges in attempts at brainwashing, propaganda and producing limp and flaccid drama, comedy and lifestyle programmes, which it self publicises as great or superb. For which it expects Joe Public to pay for.

The imbalance has most notably crept into drama productions. Firstly the forced over-representation of BAME and gay characters. Secondly when it comes to selecting the antagonists. When was the last time in a suspense drama that the villain of the piece turned out to be a BAME character, a gay character or even a woman? Playing the baddie invariably falls to the straight white man. This isn't happening through free, natural artistic expression. It's deliberate casting and writing and part of a wider agenda.
Here's an example, would the BBC (or anyone else) ever commission a drama about a straight white man wrongly accused/convicted of rape? Perhaps based on the recent notable miscarriage of justice cases? There is absolutely no way that could ever be sympatheticly dramatised, even though it would be based on real events. It simply just doesn't fit with the political narrative...

I can understand the BBC's desire to give BAME, female and LGBT actors more opportunity but it comes across as jarring and overtly political. Most women find weak, crying men very off-putting and actually accept that the man is supposed to be strong and protective. The BBC are trying to fix something that isn't broke. Exactly. And when Robin says you can't just move them to a subscription model, he couldn't be more wrong. How did any subscription service begin, from scratch, if the BBC can't be moved to one? New kit was needed for them too. It's only their live programming so it's simple, include new kit and installation in the price like Sky often do or charge separately, like Sky often do. The writing is clearly on the wall, whether it happens in 2027 or later, so surely they should be investing in such tech now. It should have happened already, with the advent of FreeView and FreeSat, but naturally the BBC have been far too arrogantly complacent to keep up with the times, even though it's their business to do just that. TV companies leave and join free channels all the time so really it's just a means for subs to receive BBC programs and such as Sky/Virgin will surely have that covered (even if they take a cut and why shouldn't they) so it's only new kit for those without such subs already.

As a white, English heterosexual male, I feel the BBC do not speak for me in any way; in fact, in my opinion, they seem to actively push the opposite down my throat and try to make me feel bad about my identity and culture. I am sick and fed up with all their content and try hard to avoid anything they put out if I can help it. They need to be abolished.

I don’t think that the traditional family should be disadvantaged ie more unfavourable tax etc; also the two parent model where one person does have flexibility to allow for unexpected extra work was more practical in the past
Bringing up children with two parents with role models of male and female gives the greatest opportunity for balanced development in children

A very interesting discussion of a previously loved institution that lost the nation's respect after the Jimmy Saville cover up. I do feel that it is time to drop the stereotype of the working class lacking the education or understanding of the cultural elites. Witnessing the EU's economic chaos without the huge funds from the UK, surely leave voters were better informed and more aware of the economic waste we had signed up to. I think the BBC sees "the man in the street" as ignorant and having an opinion that should be ridiculed.

This has had a very negative effect on attitudes and speech and therefore the atmosphere of the whole country. The BBC needs to be closed down.

I'm wondering how much of that is deliberate, and how much is down to bad writing. I mean, the woke brigade rely heavily on cliches, but so do bad writers. A bad writer is going make a point in an obvious way, that can sometimes insult your intelligence. A bad writer can't think of interesting plot ideas. A bad writer is limited in scope, so they're bound to rely on the obvious, boring, non intellectually challenging ideas. A clever, talented writer would be capable doing the opposite. Avoiding the tired cliches we get bored by, and making points in far more intelligent ways, with far more complexity.

A very thoughtful and detailed discussion - thank you Peter and Robin. We have never had a television from the early '70s onwards, but every couple of years get a letter from the BBC Licence Enforcement Police, bluntly telling us the dire consequences of not having a licence, laying out the terrors of a court appearance. It is a really intimidating document. We explain on each occasion we don't need a licence and ask them not to write to us again (which of course they ignore) but receive another document which is phrased as a sort of 'permission not to have a licence for two years'. No other organisation writes to us asking, for instance, why we haven't a gun licence or a liquor licence! Yes, please abolish the TV licence.

There's a massive amount of British people that are crying out for an open and honest discussion about Demographic change in the UK and it's negative effects.
The people who are asking for this are nearly always ignored or dismissed as 'racists' as a matter of course, particularly on and by the BBC.
This situation is untenable as this most obvious of problems MUST be addressed politically and openly or it will be like a long-lived toothache that gets worse and worse and then will be removed painfully and bloodily eventually.
The BBC are THEE gate-keepers of what is discussed culturally and poltically at the moment but they have so over-reached their 'mandate' because of their middle-class snobbery that they will not understand why the edifice they have part-created comes crashing down.
Politics and the media-arm of it has to flow with the changes of today or they are f***ed.

Having listened to the ABC in Australia again for many months (after a break of many years) I feel the same way about it. Throughout just about every program I listen to, there is a set of underlying beliefs of what is approved and unapproved. This is conveyed not only in words, but by the tones of voice, sneers, laughter etc. that goes on when mentioning other non-approved ideas. A downfall for a national broadcaster, supposedly “our” ABC paid with our tax dollars as they have advertised themselves.
