@Boris Joker As Peter Hitchens said on GB News recently why is there no significant body, like the United Nations etc, or any government demanding an immediate end to the war in Ukraine? Is it because this sad event will involve a lot of profiteering from the war? Nothing given to the Ukraine is free. And now Biden has now warned China that the USA will defend Taiwan....another 'invasion' in the offing?? Everything is going to pot!

The same institution which jeered at Mary Whitehouse for daring to question whether sex and violence are a good idea as entertainment, are suddenly quite Orwellian when it comes to something they really care about.

With respect, you are not 'force fed' anything. Instead, YOU decide to sit down and spend years watching the poisonous garbage they know you will consume. You pay for it and you have never ever even been late with a payment, I presume? I wonder what they think of you? Personally, I decided to defund the BBC in 1999. It's so easy a child could do it...if they really wanted to.

It was more than fifty years ago that Road to Freedom was aired and I can still remember some scenes from it vividly. It was the kind of intelligent programme-making that the BBC gave up on a long time ago.
Mind you, it's not just old programmes that get deleted because they don't fit the agenda. The BBC showed a documentary in 2016 called Last Whites of the East End about the demographic changes in the east end of London. Try finding that anywhere.

He was practicing survival skills in woodlands back over here (UK). He said he (and others) were sleepers, waiting for you-know-what. I think it was seen as something eccentric. Why tell everyone you are a sleeper?. It's always bugged me though.

I remember it too. It was praised for years as the best dramatisation and adaptation the Beeb had ever done. It has been banned for decades from being shown - well before political correctness, and the rest. It wasn't set in the sixties, but in France around the time of the Nazis marching in, 1940. I would say that it is a collection of the personal stories of those whose paths interweave. What they have in common with each other, is a deep disatisfaction with themselves and their lives; a desire for self-destruction, and a certain masochism. This is certainly true of the character Peter H. mentions, Daniel, who desires to live with a woman. For him, this is the perfect masochistic torture, as he is homosexual. I recall the final scene of the series being of Mathieu who, as a French soldier refusing to surrender, when offered, and is shot. As he lies dying, he thinks to himself the word, "Free!" Of course, I haven't seen this series for many years, so my memory of it may be wrong on some points but, I think the reason the Beeb has banned it, all this time is not because of the portrayal of any one character but because many of the characters were deeply flawed people. They were also left-wingers and so, in the collectivist, leftist mind of the Beeb were not good representatives of socialism.

The BBC licensed the work for a broadcast adaptation with limited time for exploitation for that license. This was perfectly normal until the late 1980s. In the 1960s there was no home media to release on and no streaming services so no one negotiated those rights. Once the license expired a repeat showing after the agreed number would have to be renegotiated with the rights holders and permission sought from credited cast members or heirs for an appropriate alternative use fee. Equity was a closed shop in those days and standard contracts for actors covered a limited number of broadcasts because actors wanted new work and not old work being recycled. The BBC didn't have the overarching music license it does today so the theme song probably requires relicensing as well. It's probably impossible to repeat or release the show for all these reasons. Many BBC adaptations from that period have been in limbo for decades because of these issues. Even with the wildly successful The Forsyte Saga the BBC couldn't rebroadcast more than one episode after 1974 for decades.

It's licence, not 'license'. Licence is the noun, whereas 'license' is the verb only, unless you're American. You license (verb) someone by issuing them a licence (noun); therefore it should be 'that licence', 'the licence', 'music licence' ‒ nouns.
Please use and preserve our proper English language and avoid adopting unnecessary Americanisms. xx

I only caught a couple of episodes, as it was screened so late, without catch up facility and tucked away where they probably hoped few would watch.
I thought it was magnificent but mostly because of when it was filmed.

*_'The Roads to Freedom,'_* written by David Turner and directed by James Cellan Jones, adapted from Sartre's trilogy (The Age of Reason, The Reprieve and Iron in the Soul), _was_ in fact shown on BBC4 a few months after this interview, but it didn't stick around for long on iPlayer. An absolutely magnificent series, as important as anything they ever put out as far as I'm concerned, were I a tv critic for my sins I'd have no hesitation in awarding it the full five stars. ☆☆☆☆☆

Even if the show couldn't be shown on TV today for 'reasons', is there any reason why it shouldn't be made available on blu-ray/DVD? Perhaps if enough people badger the BFI (who have released much old BBC drama) something might happen someday.

The BBC seem to relate to their audience as if they are naughty school children who have not done well in their exams. The news being a prime example.

I remember the series being screened and some of my friends with more liberal parents were allowed to watch it. I don’t understand why it can’t be screened with some cringeworthy ‘warning’ to precede the screening. Alternatively it could be released as a DVD. If the films of Abel Ferrara such as Bad Lieutenant are freely available I don’t see why this prestigious series can’t be seen by the general public (again)

Given the BBC are not likely to allow us to watch the brilliant "Come Fly With Me" anytime soon, and that is far more recent, I think it is highly unlikely that a programme from 1970 will be shown unless it is uncontroversial or 'on side' politically. The BBC also removed Jimmy Savile's Desert Island Discs episode from their iPlayer which seems extreme, given the iPlayer is request driven.

Russian military found a mined truck with 152 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers in the cellars of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. The order to mined the truck was ordered by the president of Ukraine Vlodymir Zelensky, Ukrainian Azovstal plant workers as witnesses claimed.
The act IF on explosion of the mined truck is to accuse Russia for the deliberate removal of the remains as not to allow it to be transferred to their relatives.

Well it's two months later and the BBC have put Roads on the iPlayer. We're four episodes in and l had high hopes with everything that's been said, and l have to say am a tad disappointed. We've been laughing at some parts, and l don't think we're meant to. I like the clear narrative though, which is a welcome feature of programme making gone-by and my mind remains open as to a final judgement.

At least, it would appear, there is enough recognition of its (and hopefully others'!) archival importance that it will be properly preserved, regardless of the current social and political attitudes. Some years ago I read an article on how 'sticky tape syndrome' was busy destroying video as well as audio tape archives. Film isn't necessarily safe either as it frequently suffers from vinegar syndrome and colour fade, so unfortunately it's not all going to look after itself...

From Broadcasting It. An Encyclopaedia of Homosexuality on Film, Radio and TV in the UK 1923-1993
“An extraordinary epic, memorable as much for its lacerating monologues…as for its concentrated sense of impending doom, and the blending in of the manoeuvrings of Hitler, Daladier, Chamberlain and Halifax with the fictional domestic drama.
For the first time a gay man was seen having sex (with a prostitute), railing at God, pretending friendship to a man whose girlfriend he doesn’t want but takes in a marriage of convenience.
Thanks to the truth in the writing and the playing, this was exhilirating rather than simply depressing and reprehensible.”
