Anyone who thinks this is a bad film or boring doesn't know anything about filmmaking or just has bad taste. In every post on Instagram with Dune, you see so many people saying it's a bad film or boring. This film is amazingly directed; the cinematography is beautiful; the score is amazing; the characters are amazing; the storytelling, writing, dialogue, acting-everything about it is great. And I've seen others say, "But I didn't understand this." The movie explains literally everything that needs to be explained for this film if you pay attention. And I just saw Dune 2, and it's a masterpiece, even better than this one, one of the best sequels; this trilogy could be one of the best trilogy's of all time.

The thing about the fight at the end... not only is this Paul's first real fight to the death...
Paul was trained using shields, where fast movements are blocked and slow strikes are necessary... in the Fremen fight, there are no shields, so Paul is having to dodge quick strikes he's used to relying on a shield to block them.

Yeaa that’s a great point, it didn’t come to me in the moment but you can totally see the different styles. Paul much more precise and calculated while shamis (think I butchered that) was way more wild and aggressive

My daughter and I saw Part II this morning. Run, don't walk, just get in the car now and go. I'd recommend seeing it in IMAX.
Casting continues into the incredible, acting is some of the best I've seen from any of he actors, cinematography and shot comp are off the charts, sound design is some of the best I've ever heard, and all of those were enhanced beyond compare in IMAX. I'm hoping to see it again at the one up in Phoenix, just because it's the biggest screen I can get to within a four hour trip.

Thanks Guys. Excellent reaction. I appreciate how much of this world building you got from the start. Just remember, Dune was written decades before any of the sci fi that you're going to point to later going, "Hey, doesn't Dune resemble...?" (Tattooine, for example). Every single parallel you find? You'll find the author owning up directly in interviews that they lifted several tropes from Frank Herbert's DUNE.

The Dune Universe is more bizarre than people think if they haven't read any of the books. The mysterious Guild Navigators are crazy weird, achieving Interstellar travel by folding spacetime so that their ships "travel without moving." The strange society of Bene Tleilax, who are masters of genetic manipulation, can create monsters like the Baron's "pet spider" in the movie as well as people called "Face Dancers." The lore covers thousands of years of future history.

    • @Aeolusdallas
      @Aeolusdallas 4 місяці тому

The space folding is actually just from The 1980s movie it's not in the book or the mini series from 2000 and those two The ships use regular old hyperdrive but they have no computers so that guild navigators take the spice so they can see the future and guide the ships without running into anything because men who take spice can see the future and women the past but neither the other except paul

The "Voice" is not quite like a Jedi mind trick. It's a skill that uses precise and well-trained observation to create a vocal tone that is uniquely able to affect the target. You can't just throw it out on some unsuspecting random. You need to observe them and focus on their suseptibilities. Paul knows his mother well enough to try it at the start, but it's a big moment for him to use it on the Harkonnens. It's his first time trying it in the "wild", so to speak.
The idea behind the Bene Gesserit is that they train themselves to be able to totally control their own bodies, down to a nearly cellular level. They use this to create that pitch, to control their body chemistry to nuetralise poison, and to control the exact choice of fertilization for their pregnancy.

    • @ItzWilson2

    Glad you two liked it!
Indeed, the story is quite compelling but worldbuilding needs its time, and they stayed pretty close to the original story and scenes of the book. Some details were omitted, but that's unavoidable when adapting such a lore-heavy book.
As to give you some info on the lore and politics of the Duniverse, so it becomes a bit more clear:
You have 4 major powerblocks in this universe:
1)The Emperor (and his army, the Sardaukar)
2)The Landsraad, consisting of a dozen Great Houses (and many Minor Houses, all vying for power). Think Game-of-Thrones here, but in sci-fi setting. ;-)
3)The Bene Gesserit; a semi-religious Order of women whom have certain powers (like the Voice, or being a Truthsayer, and some others not shown yet) and exert a lot of behind-the-scenes influence, but mostly stay low-profile
    4) The Guild Navigators and CHOAM; a strong mercantile power, with a monopoly on spacetravel
It was more or less explained in the beginnings when Paul talked with his dad on Caladan: House Atreides is a growing power, politically and military, and the Emperor feels threatened. But he can't directly attack the House, because otherwise the Landsraad (the ensemble of Great Houses) will turn against him. As said, they each constitute a "big power" in this Duniverse. So the Landsraad and the Emperor keep each other in check, as it were.
Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are working from the shadows, on both sides - they primarily are concerned with their own plans and devices, to create the Kwizatsh Haderach. They manipulate from the shadows and actually form the third great power in this universe, but seldom show it openly. They also exert power by political marriages, or become concubines for political advantages - which is why Jessica wasn't married to Leto, though it was done to benefit him and House Atreides, not herself or the Sisterhood.
The fourth independent power, which is hardly touched upon in this first part of the movie, is the Spacing Guild and CHOAM. They're like a huge mercantile power, and the Guild Navigators are the only ones able to move/teleport (technically folding space-time) between planets, so without them, there would be no viable interstellar Imperium. Which make them essential and an enormous powerhouse as well - though, of course... they are and remain dependent on the Spice. That's why: whom controls Arrakis, controls the Empire.
So the Emperor can't directly attack a Great House like Artreides, or he risks all-out war with the Landsraad, consisting of the other Great Houses. Instead, he uses an indirect attack, with and through the Harkonnens - who want their fiefplanet back with all the Spice - doing the grunt work for him. The emperor knows they will be easily instigated that way, certainly because the Atreides and Harkonnen already have a centuries-old feud going on between them. It's a sort of proxy war, thus. He does help the Harkonnen to make sure they'll win - hence why he sends a few battalions of Sardaukar, his elite troops. But no-one (especially the Landsraad) may know about that. (That's also why they killed Liet, because she was going to expose the Emperor's meddling).
Also, some details one might have missed in the movie:
About the time in which the story plays: in the beginning of the movie they show it's the year 10191, but this is not 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG.
AG (After Guild - when the Spice Guild was made and started exploring the stars), and BG (Before Guild) are the iterations used and the lore in the books gives some indication as how that relates to our AD (Anno Domini). The most precise date - with a high level of accuracy - is that the first Dune novel which is set in 10,191 AG, corresponds approximately to 23,148 AD.
It is mentioned the "space age" takes place in 11,000 BG, and assuming this would mean it began in 1957 AD as this is when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched, we can rebuild the whole timeline to our AD. So if you add the year 11,000 BG to 10,191 AG you’re left with a time span of 21,191 years. So if you add 21,191 years to 1957 AD, you’re left with 23,148 AD as the most likely date.
Quite some time! Most casual watchers of the movie think it's almost 10000 years in the future, but it's actually more than twice as much!
Now...as far as the melee fights and old/new tech are concerned, it's important to realize that in the Duniverse, while there is very high-tech at CERTAIN aspects, others are low tech (which gives the retro-feeling of the movie) but with a reason. It may seem strange at first sight, but note, however, that this has an in-story explanation, namely: thousands of years ago, there was a rebellion against "thinking machines" (AI) called the Butlerian Jihad. Humanity won (barely), but since that time there is a very strong taboo on creating anything resembling robots or AI, and humanity started to develop their own powers (aided by the melange/spice), such as Mentats (basically human supercomputers). This is the reason you don't see any highly developed robots, AI or even computers in this world.
This mix of old and new tech is a defining, historically explained element of the Duniverse; it's part of the worldbuilding and lore. Now, specifically about the melee combat: maybe you missed it, but they explained the shields in that fighting scene; they said "the slow sword can penetrate it". This is a hint that ALL objects with high kinetic energy are stopped dead in their tracks when hitting the shield, but SLOW objects can penetrate it. Meaning: ALL of our "modern" warfare weapons would largely become obsolete: machine-guns and all fast moving shells/bullets etc. become useless, but swords and knifes that are SLOWLY moved can still reach a target through the shields. Making the use of swords and knifes, after thousands of years, the dominant way of fighting once again. It's actually a cool twist.
That's all I'm going to say about it, because any more would get you into spoiler territory for part 2! ;-)
Hope that made things more clear!

@@ItzWilson2, I suppose the best way to describe "Dune: part 2" is to say it was like watching "Rob Roy" on steriods and set in a fantasy or science fiction world, but still not as good a movie as the original, but only turn Luke Skywalker (Rob Roy) into Anakin Skywalker (the Mahdi of Islam).
      156) Rob Roy (1995)
      164) Dune: part 2 (2024)
"Dune: part 2" is worth seeing. Denis Villeneuve stayed true to the book enough, in the sense characters can see it all happening as good or bad or good and bad and yet you as the viewer or reader can make up your own mind too. In other words, do you see this hero as worth it or not worth it. It's up to you.
I was surprised Denis Villeneuve in "Dune: part 1" had the Fremen call Paul the Mahdi, as that was a dead give away that this whole thing is an Islamic end times vision. Frank Herbert did not come out and say it, but while I read "Dune" as a kid I knew the whole things smelled of T. E. Lawrence of Arabia joining the Muslims in World War One to be a leader figure of the desert only this was more Anti-Christ type vision of the future.
I think in that sense it stays true to what Frank Herbert said, "I am showing you the superhero syndrome and your own participation in it." - Frank Herbert, speaking about "Dune."
Now I see it from Zendaya's perspective; hence, I love the ending as completely open ended as to whether they achieve or don't achieve, but that many are for it as the dye is cast and some are disbelievers of it seeing the conflict is not over nor is any success guaranteed. In that sense it was brilliant, but it didn't crack my top 100 favorites movies list.
"A Princess of Mars" by writer Edgar Rice Burroughs inspired many things along with the movie adaptation of the book called "John Carter" in 2012 by Disney, such as: Star Wars, Avatar, Indiana Jones, Superman, Dune, and writer Ray Douglas Bradbury with "The Martian Chronicles," which I read as a child.
Here is where such things fall on my favorite movies list:
      20) Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back (1980)
      21) Star Wars: a New Hope (1977)
      41) Superman II (1980)
      112) John Carter (2012)
      121) Avatar (2009)
      125) Man of Steel (2013)
      148) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
      164) Dune: part 2 (2024)
      270) Dune: part 1 (2021)
The main reason for me to watch Dune 2 is to see whether Zendaya Coleman surpasses female actresses I loved in the past, which I don't believe she has yet. And to see if the vision of the Mahdi in his ascension can be depicted well. Denis Villeneuve delivered. I suppose movie three will be can Islam rule well? I doubt it in reality, or for depiction in the next movie, and I doubt the 3rd movie would surpass the 2nd.
Zendaya is in my top 13 favorite actors based on the list below. She is certainly doing well for her career and I'm happy for her in that sense.
      10) Spiderman: No Way Home (2021)
      96) The Greatest Showman (2017)
      164) Dune: part 2 (2024)
      191) Spiderman: Far from Home (2019)
      198) Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
      270) Dune: part 1 (2021)
      “I loved you,

And wrote my will across the
      Sky and stars
To earn you freedom, the seven
      Pillared worthy house,
      That your eyes might be
      Shining for me
      When we came
Death seemed my servant on the
      Road, 'til we were near
      And saw you waiting:
When you smiled and in sorrowful
      Envy he outran me
      And took you apart:
      Into his quietness
      Love, the way-weary,
      groped to your body,
      Our brief wage
      Ours for the moment
Before Earth's soft hand explored your shape

      Your substance
      Men prayed me
      that I set our work,
      The inviolate house,
      As a memory of you
But for fit monument I shattered it,
      Unfinished: and now
The little things creep out to patch
      Themselves hovels
      In the marred shadow
      Of your gift.”

Frank Herbert went out of his way to explain every single skill and ability on display while the force even with extended universe lore is still more or less magic or just magic . For example the Voice and the idea behind it is similar to a Mother you love heightening her tone to persuade you from not doing something again but a 100 times amplified . You will feel compelled as it is nearly in your nature to follow certain commands if they are voiced correctly to you . The middle man , the conciousness interwening and evaluating your decision making is cut off , only the commands Action matters .
Point is, its not a handwave or even just a magic system but inspiration and research through actual Science and observation even if partially outdated . A soft science fiction .

Thuffir doing that funky "exorcist" gaze was him doing a Mentat trance wherein he can do insane calculations, Paul is almost capable of doing those thanks to be trained in Mentat ways, meanwhile Duncan & Gurney were turning him into a Warmaster & Lady Jessica a Bene Gesserit "warlock". I wish I saw y'all's reaction to Shadout Mapes's moment of Holy ecstasy.

Good reaction guys for people who do not know the books. Amusing these people who find this movie boring ! the world building is huge because the books are the most FAMOUS AND COMPLEX SF litterature books ever, with also the Lord of the rings and the Foundation saga, 6 books written between 1965 to 1985 by Frank Herbert, and 16 books more from his son Brian Herbert (and Kevin J. Anderson). Thiq story is not for everyone, you need to THINK here and gather informations on this huge new universe ! there is an encyclopedia of Dune on the web to help by the fans.

Dr yueh was supposed to have conditioning to prevent h8s betrayal. What is aggrevating is Yueh would have known his wife was aleady dead. It was a totaly useless betrayal. If he was honerable he would have made an effigy for his wife and told the duke. Worst betrayal in history imo!

    • @ItzWilson2
      @ItzWilson2  4 місяці тому

How would he have known? Do they have some type of connection? Also yea I agree, it was a really bad betrayal haha

    • @rolandcooke
      @rolandcooke 4 місяці тому

@@ItzWilson2 - in the Lynch movie it is explained a bit better. Jessica (with her heightened Bene Gesserit senses) can detect something is amiss with Yueh, but understands that he hates the Harkonnens and loves his wife, and (probably, I forget) also loves the House of Atreides. Plus he's got the Sukh Conditioning, so there's no way he could be a traitor.
What Jessica doesn't clock is that Yueh's level of love for his wife, and his level of hate for the the Harkonnens outweighs everything else.
In the book the whole thing plays out a bit more. The Atreides high command knows that there's a traitor, and the (false) incriminating evidence points towards Jessica. Leto doesn't believe it for a single second, but plays along to buy time for him to find out who the real traitor is, unsuccessfully obviously.
Thufir Hawat DOES believe the evidence against Jessica (even after the fall), and that causes further undermining of the Atreides defences.
