    I'll never forget when I was very young and a close friend who trained in Greco-Roman wrestling was trying to explain what a "flying mare" (ippon seoi nage in Judo) was. I didn't get it so I asked him to demonstrate. It was such an unwinding experience, the total loss of situational awareness, self-control and combined with a knock out on a soft grass surface.
    I was out of commission for several minutes, while he apologized for going too hard.
    Despite having trained mostly in (kick-/thai-) boxing for much more than Judo or any other grappling sport, it took me hundreds or thousands of repetitions to get used to the experience on a mat. A perfect uppercut or a spinning heel kick, is nowhere near the "nightmare" of a shoulder throw for an unexperienced person. It is a complete roller coaster, ending with a knock-out or probably death on a hard surface.
    So to any striker or BJJ-style grappler, I really recommend some sessions of Greco/Judo/Sambo etc for just getting used to it and learn how to break-fall, or you may be in for the most unpleasant surprise of your life if you face off with anybody who knows how to hand it to you. Never underestimate the power of a upper body throw, especially shoulder throws.

      @@user-un4uy7hr6c No, I wasn't injured, but it was one horrendous experience. I was young and nimble and landed on grass, but I was stunned and completely disoriented for a few minutes.
      I don't think there's any issue in learning to be both uke and tori in these throws, under proper guidance. I'm just pointing out how overwhelming a shoulder throw can be on a street situation, when not having trained them. No need to be overly careful in a dojo. That's overwhelmingly safe. In fact, I think Judo have gone a bit too far on safety. In a regular training session with proper guidance, too many techniques have been banned. Just saying that on the "street", many don't understand how devastating they can be.
      Not to belittle that poor 6th grader, but it must have been very unlucky, bad sensei, or just the fact that all sports/arts come with some form of risk, including football basketball or golf. 🙂

      When I started judo the first thing taught was breakfalls. We spent a good amount of time just learning how to breakfall. After a couple of months learning and practicing breakfalls from every conceivable position and or situation, we began learning throwing techniques. Every session began with breakfalls and ended with breakfalls.
      When I move on to karate-do, I already knew well how to breakfall and never ever again in my life had a problem with falling. It even saved my life once from a motorcycle accident. Amazingly I ended up on my feet from rolling out of the crash.

      Those were methods that were part of most, if not all the old fighting systems. Under the political situation of the cultural revolution, styles that didn't become sports had to go into obscurity. When the government wanted to develop a H2H method for security forces and the military, they had to make an amalgamation of whatever they could find.

    This is real MA, this what must be taught in self-defense classes. Sport MA including MMA ruined it and giving false idea and perception about MA. It is never about being stronger and faster to defeat the opponent, it's about being smart and clever to save yourself. Dirty tricks and cheating are a part of MA.

    • @tatumergo3931
      @tatumergo3931 10 днів тому +2

      The problem with trying to run a TMA club or school is that most people are not interested in real martial applications. You have to sell it as self-defense, and that's a two prong problem, because most instructors are not well versed in real martial applications.
      The second problem is that most people want a quick fix that they can easily use. They are not willing to invest the time and effort into becoming a warrior. That's something that the military does, and it does it for free.

    • @MizanQistina
      @MizanQistina 10 днів тому

      @@tatumergo3931 Yeah, I know, it is a problem even in my country with own national TMA. I've going through campaigning, even to a point it involves fight challenges (often by practitioners from other schools and MA) and I have to prove that my MA works as advertised. I don't always win 😂 If you have the idea on how it is humiliating when I failed to prove it in front of people... I've going through it all in my youth... 😁
      Even we have our own TMA, not all of my people are interested to learn it, some even ridicule it, some insult it and some praising foreign MA. Today it is still the same but with MMA. Most people think it just a waste of time, MA overall is not needed in modern era because we have the Police and what not. Most who learn MA is because their friend/family are already into it or for school/university curriculum requirement. A rare thing for a random person step into the class and say "I want to learn..."

      Most classical ancient martial arts involved different types of fighting methods. You can also find these types of applications in karate katas. It was only with modernisation that most martial arts became over specialised. Like modern karate today is nothing more than japanese style kickboxing.
