Came out really nice. Very smart move with the screen, 84 is the only c4 to use the hood to supply air to the intake. Last thing you need is to have a plastic bag from the dollar store get stuck in the hood runners.
Very neat job! This one was one of the first mods i ve done to my 84 but not even near as neat as yours! I just left the hole!! 😆 but defo can feel the difference especially on harder pulls!
Looks good, won't work on mine, mine is TPI. Trying to send a picture of mine, but I'm not savy on UA-cam or pc wise. Starting to rebuild a 1981 vette I found under a tree at a chicken farm, been sitting for years. Needs alot, but couldn't just let it rot away. Got it for $3,000, most like will have about 10k to 12k in it by the time I'm done, but it's my girls summer car, so that's ok, as long as it's safe and does what it's supposed to do.
It's definitely an Emissions - EPA related reason. Think of it this way. Without the hole in the upper section of the radiator air box. The hood duct opening can only truly suck warmer, engine compartment air at a lower flow rate. This prevents the ECU from enriching the fuel mixture to accommodate the cooler and forced air flow from the outside of the car. It would theoretically lower fuel economy and increase emissions as a result. This has been something I've considered for a long time. I've just had bigger issues until this time.
Nice work but next time you should use Grill paint instead of that plastic dip because the plastic didn't do well with heat it will get brittle and come off
Hey Mike you should put a Hypertech cooling fan switch in your 84 Corvette I put 160° thermostat in my 84 Corvette and a 160 cooling fan switch not bad for 60 bucks definitely feel more horsepower. You can get the part in Corvette America the part number is 40553 really easy to install. Hope this helps
I would love to do all that - BUT - in order for the the 4+3 transmission to stay in overdrive on the highway (where you need it most), the temp has to be above 184 degrees, if not the trans automatically kicks OUT of overdrive. Ask me how I know.
Yeah my 84 Corvette it's an automatic I didn't know the stick shifts needed a certain operating temperature hey have you thought of putting roller rockers on your lifters that'll give you more horsepower for sure also not a bad price for the horsepower galn.
@@virgilrowe7653 I haven't considered that. While I would love some more HP - right now the engine is running really good - and I'm just going to leave it be - for now.
I might do this mod this week. Are you tracking down a cooling issue? I noticed in one of your road trip vids, seemed to be running on the warm side. Again, Im still a new 84 vette owner and bought mine from someone that wasnt completely honest with me about things. So.. mine didnt "overheat" per say, but was running poorly and hot. I found that both mufflers were falling apart from the inside, causing blockage. Plus the catalytic converter was partially clogged. Runs alot better and cooler after replacing exhaust with straight pipes and put a new cat on. You might have already taken care of this though or maybe your exhaust is in good shape.
I don't have a cooling issue - thankfully. Out on the highway it runs around 190 - 195. In traffic or in a drive-thru it will get up to 227 - but the fan kicks on and brings it back down to 217 or so - which is fine.
I was thinking on putting cardboard in the hole on the hood and then put bubble gum on the bottom and close the hood and hopefully it lines up. How close does the hood get to the lower part?
This mod in conjunction with swapping an 84 fuel pump for an 85 fuel pump seems to help the car a bit. It doesn't struggle so much to rev anymore. Purely seat of the pants observation - but I'm happy with the mod so far. Thanks for watching!
Hey Mike so I've been thinking more about this. I'm going to just drill small holes in a pattern right in the plastic. However, I've read some comments about that hole inviting moisture in to the intake. I don't drive in the rain, but if I had to, I'd probably make a plate to go over it that is easy to put in on the road. Just wondering how it's gone for you so far, and also have you noticed any instability in your hood? Thanks.
Hi! I also don’t drive in the rain so no problems with that. I have noticed no instability or anything bad at all with this mod. I do think it helps a bit with engine breathing but that’s just a seat of the pants observation.
FWIW. You have an air filter that will trap "any" water molecule that "might" make it through the system. Honestly moisture should never be a worry. Dirt and leaves "could be"... again, this is why you have an air filter in place. You really are over thinking it here. Open it all the way up. The holes barely give you an increase, as you've created.
@@Mikes84Corvette Hi Mike. I'm curious why the concern with the metal cloth you used in this set up. Seems to me the filter will stop anything that shouldn't be in the system Putting in a screen like this can trap leaves and restrict air flow. Just my personal observation. Btw... how's the car running. Have you gotten any ET's from a drag strip to make any comparisons...
@@davidsafely732 The holes, if you go ahead and measure area, give me lots more air, while protecting the car from debris, not unlike a screen. The increase in performance has been what I would characterize as, "dramatic", and I'm very satisfied with the result.
@@davidsafely732 Hi David! I just wanted to keep anything big from getting caught up in the air intakes inside the hood. Might be overkill - but it made me feel a bit better. Anything that get caught in the screen can be easily removed too. Car is running good - thanks for asking. I've never taken it to a drag strip - and probably never will. With the air mod - the engine does seem to breathe a bit better at higher RPMs.
I put the screen in just for a little extra protection. These cars suck in air from underneath - so anything on the road could potentially get sucked up. Of course there is the air cleaner on top of the engine - but I wanted to add a little more protection. So - honestly - not sure what would happen if you didn't add it. I just wanted a little peace of mind - and to not worry about it.
I used a piece of carboard and lined it's edge up with the edge of the shroud. Then I put a little oil around the opening in the hood - I closed the hood and it left an imprint on the cardboard. I cut the carboard around the imprint - then traced around the cardboard cutout on the shroud. I hope this helps!
Nope not technically stock. I swapped the 84 style mufflers which pointed down for 85 style which are straight out the back. The drone was awful until I made the change.
Nice job modifying the intake Mike. Looks very professional 👌
Thanks! And thanks for watching!!
also one could use sculpting clay on the lower part to imprint the lines for air intake modification.
Great idea!

Nicely done! Thanks for the video, too. 👍
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Looks great Mike! Keep up the great work!

This is a great idea, and a great video. I've been thinking about doing it after seeing this idea.
Easy to do!
Great video, Mike! I’ve been contemplating doing that, myself.

Not sure why it wasn’t cut open from the factory.
