Remember, Katakuri said he was using an advanced type of armament-haki and could overpower Luffy on clashes. -the base armament is the black-coating haki -the advanced armament ist the combination of black-coating with devilfruit ability e.g Katakuri's Block-mochi fists i believe the Ryou is just a Wano-variation similar to the base armament haki, which involve directing the flow of haki (energy, force, ki, chakra) to body parts to unveil unique properties: Directing excessive haki into an object destroy it from within, while concentrating haki around a pody part provide defence.
No such thing as invincible haki...the invincible form people keep referencing was literally just shown as black haki when Rayleigh used it in Sabody...haki wasn’t shown pre time skip bc the main characters couldn’t use it yet

If Jack wasn't scared of attacking a ship with a former fleet Admiral, Admiral and vice Admiral there is no way Queen is different. Also the vivre card databook states the calamities only fear Kaido. So either databook are not to be believed anymore or queen just like making expressions
You know how blackbeard wasn't really 'scared' of shanks or akainu, but he retreated when they came for him. I doubt strong characters are actually scared, even if it's their death, but they recognize danger. If Jinbei wasn't scared, doubt Queen would be either.

The way I understood it: ryouu = haki, just haki, so they just use different terms. And as for armament itself, I guess there are three lvls: so, Luffy knew usual armament. Hyou was trying to teach him armament without contact, like he showed himself on Alpaca. And in this chapter he said that there is even a higher level, when your haki deals not external damage, as in just "advanced armament" (2nd lvl) but internal (which makes it the 3rd lvl). At least that's how I understood it.

N9TMARE fleet admirals can still dash out solid damage to certain yonkos, like big mom, if she had to haki up+ block with both arms against boundman, an even stronger TANKMAN, akainu, or sengoku should be able to make big mom want to dodge, or block with high defense

How I understood it: 1. Black hardening 2. Ryuu - Haki aura around body which can be used offensively and defensively without needing physical contact (what Rayleigh used against elephant and admirals used to block whitebeard) 3. Transferring that aura into other living things/objects to destroy then from the inside out (e.g. used to destoy collars) Could be wrong though

This chapter was full of so many subversions. Instead of blocking or repelling Big Mom, Luffy gets swatted like a fly. Instead of spending the rest of the arc as O-Lin, Big Mom recovers her memory/strength. Instead of one-shotting Queen at full strength now, she then promptly falls asleep.
To be honest, now that the O-lin + Udon plot reaches it's end...this entire plot was garbage. A Yonkou was used as a plot device to wreck the prison, and after she regains her sense, she falls to sleep on the spot ? Come on man. Big mom was never disappointing in combat, but the way she's getting treated as an emperor is embarrassing

The way I perused the chapter armament Haki has 3 levels could be a misunderstanding/ subject to retconning. But: 1.Armament black hardening 2.Ryou( Haki wave) 3.Destruction from inside out Hyogoro said that what Luffy just did is beyond what he could teach yet, hyogoro knows ryou(wave) therefore wouldn't that infer that there are 3 levels.
Ryuuou is just how the people of Wano refer to Haki. Page 7 of this chapter, Hyogoro says "I am only able to teach you how to gather the vast amount of Ryuuou, *known to you as Haki* , that surrounds your body".

Well that was more of a pressurized air punch that struck through Luffy in one point. This seems more like an impact that goes out one point and spreads throughout the opponent's body causing internal damage.
I mean if you look at it, the 6 powers may be a sort of precursor to haki. After all, its whole thing is that its pushing the body to its limit so it can do things it normally couldn't, whereas haki is pushing your will to the point that it can influence things that it normally shouldn't. It's possible that much of what we've seen throughout the series has been possible because people have been tapping into degrees of haki without fully unlocking it.
Armament Haki: invisible armor around the user. Hardening Haki blacks the skin. Flow Haki extends the invisible armor away from your body. Advance Haki goes into the target for internal damage.

I have a feeling that after 20 years or so, Oda wanted to rush the story for whatever reason. He is human afterall and his life is limited, past health concerns probably took a toll on his lifespan, he is getting to spend some time with his family now, but not as much as us. But I understand why you're frustrated on it, 20 years of story and setups and this is how its going to end? Cliche plot devices?

I think that Luffys Haki is stronger than the one Huogoro wanted to teach him , it's because of kings Haki and his will. It's similar that Shanks showed at whitebeard ship. That is why admirals told that he will be a problem in the future....Luffy will be able to defeat Yonkou!
How Hyo explains it, normal haki is just the hardening, then you have Ryo, that would be the defense that is around but outside your body (the first image shown in the manga during the exolanation) and the other thing *is not* another level *but* a WAY of using ryo NOT to make an armor around your body but to ATACK and it can damage from the inside. I take it as the thing that was explained to us speaking about swords. 1-Not cutting paper with a blade if you dont want to (the armor thing) 2-Cutting iron like paper just if you want (the way of using it to atack)

First armament = black body parts for defence and offense Ryuo = The invisible part of Haki, that can be used to deflect (like admiral was using in marine fort war, stood hands up ready to deflect) but can also punch and add this deflect to the punch for a extra force to it and makes punch stronger Next level Ryuo = not deflection, but flowing the invisible part into your opponent (on contact of the hit) to destroy from inside-out. Massive damage buff, but... potentially, doesn’t have the haki surrounding him and therefore looses the defensive armaments. Eg. turning body parts black to help absorb damage or using invisible part to deflect (can’t turn a body part black because the cloak of haki is only in one place and therefore can’t do the first 2 levels as it’s isn’t around his body for him to manipulate while doing advanced ryuo) Love the reviews, keep up the good work

She’s been sleepy since chapter 940, o-Lin has showcased a similar ability as her five year old self to keep her desires at bay, whereas big mom has no such ability often giving way to her to desires.

Ulrich Leukam that wasnt because he couldnt use it that was purely for plot in sacrificing something to save the new Generation. Second he was able to change kaidos mind on going to marineford for an all out battle against WB and everyone in his way,he was on par with mihawk in terms of swordsmanship until he lost his arm and still could clash with wb on his ship And dont forget that he stoped a serious punch with killing intent from akainu with his sword,which should have melted if he wasnt using sone sort of haki We May now not much as of right now of him but thats enough to justify his Spot as an emperor
I think its three levels; 1: basic hardening 2: (ryou) an extended shield like the three admirals block 3: haki that flows from the user into the opponent
Here it is. Hopefully you read this. There are 3 types of Haki: (1) Hardening/Koka a.k.a. Black Haki. First hyped up by Vergo. This is simply hardening your skin or weapons improving their durability. This is the same one Zoro uses on his blades. This is not necessarily weaker than the rest, it is simply there to toughen your skin like Tekkai. Sometimes, this is not coloured (Cracker's Hard Biscuit), but the concept is the same. (2A) Deflection a.k.a. Hyo's Haki. This was first used by Marigold to deflect Luffy's attacks. Unlike hardening, this takes EXTRA UNUSED HAKI from the rest of your body and uses it to deflect your opponent. That's it. There is no internal damage. (2B) Internal Haki a.k.a. Rayleigh's Haki. Hyo says what he used, was inferior to Luffy's. This was first used by Rayleigh to destroy the collar from within. Now this becomes similar to Law's Gamma Knife. It uses your EXTRA UNUSED Haki to strike directly INSIDE someone's body. It is an advanced version of (2A). (1) and (2) seem to be able to be mixed up. You can mix hardening and the deflection/internal Haki. However, Rayleigh's "flowing" Haki is simply an extension of Hyo's Haki. Remember, just because this "flowing", "deflection", or "internal haki" is being introduced, it doesn't mean hardening/koka is done with. Zoro for example will focus on (1).
for what reyleigh said during the training, haki is an armor you cover yourself with, but some people can use enough to make it a weapon and then a laser like blast sends flying the elephant by reyleigh extending his palm. that means that there are 2 types of haki, physical and beyondm and luffy as been using haki to directly attack enemies, he didnt learn the other one. this might be why also luffy armament vs katakuri's make him hurt, cause he doesnt know that advanced type of haki. hyogoro mentioned haki as ryuo, the ability to cut nothing ort something like that, the same that zoro did in alabasta. zoro couldnt have advanced haki back then if that was the case. also hyogoro now said that hes trying to teach him something beyond ryuo, it maybe something without an specific name. its just advanced haki, 2 levels, or at least thats what the story implies
To as your question there's 2 levels to Arnament Haki First level the ability to put a metal armor around your body or part this can be extended to objects as well.Allows logias to be tangible and strengthens your offensive . Second level is the ryou the one rayliegh used to free camie. It takes the haki similar to Fisher man island technique allows the user to imbued their haki into their opponents. And as he stated is much powerful and effective.
Seems to me that ryou is just a coating of the advanced haki, i.e. a defensive version of it which hyougoro was trying to teach luffy in order to fend off attacks. However, luffy in his desperation managed to use the offensive version of the advanced haki which allows him to break the chains and this surprised hyougoro as perhaps learning offense with advanced haki may be harder than the defense he was teaching him. Also, I don't think big mom will break out of the chains too easily coz they're made of seastone and she is a df user. She will break through it but I imagine it'll take some degree of effort.
No if you look closely bb tried to suck sengoku shockwave but couldnt bcs sengoku removed the krouzou thing with the 2nd haki armament level and then attacked with his df. Another example is when admirals stopped whitebeard quake with this haki.
So far we have seen armament haki used like this: 1. To be able to physically touch logias and hurt them. Ex: almost everyone in the new world. 2. Used as a protective barrier around the body like hardening. Ex: virgo or sanji vs judge 3. Extending outside the body as a protective coating around objects the user is touching. Ex: Zoro vs pica 4. Extending outside the body as a barrier force that can be used defensively or offensively. Admirals (defense). sentomaru and rayleigh (offense) and in wano it's called ryu 5. Extending outside your body and flowing into another object destroying/damaging the object from the inside out. Ex: rayleigh removing the slave collar. What luffy hope to do against kaido to bypass his scales As the list goes higher a more advanced version of armament haki is needed. With one being the most basic version of armament haki and 5 being the most advanced that we know so far. Number 6 may even be how to coat an object permanently (making a sword into a black blade) and it being an even higher tier would explain why black blades are so rare.
So for my understanding it’s like you said, Ryuo is what the people of Wano call Haki. However it does seem Ryuo/Haki is being used differently than the rest of the world, where like explained the Ryuo/Haki is used to attack from the inside out in Wano whereas the rest of the world uses it as a hardening.
How I understand armament: Basic armament: You can touch logias, have invisible armor around you... Ex: Amazons in Amazon Lily, Boo Chinjao grandson & sai's brother, Luffy kicking trebol, & Sanji blocking Judges spear... Are examples of basic normal haki Koka or hardening: Is the metallic or vulcanized looking version of armament, which is just condensed haki or spirit that manifests or appears! Ryouu or Flow: Is a technique within the armament branch of haki that allows you to control more haki by focusing on the energy or "AURA" around your body not just the haki or aura on your body. Then ryouu or Flow is broken up into 2 levels, The first that creates "2nd layer of armor" out of the haki or aura surrounding you ... That armor let's you hit harder & defend by deflection... The next branch or level up of ryouu takes it a step further by allowing you to direct that deflected haki/spirit into objects or targets!
THIS is how it goes guys 1. Basic armament haki coating which Luffy understands the concept of and uses 2. An extension of haki aura which can be used/has to be used in conjunction with armament haki.(this is mostly used defensively unless you are able to extend that aura more so offensively) Which brings us on to 3. Armament haki with the mastered aura around it which you can use to penetrate deeper due to the fact that the aura can go through you and extend further than your haki fist.
hi sawyer, i'd like to attempt to try and answer your question: i believe its 3 levels, with an asterisk on the third: we know theres black coating, the basic armament, we know what hyogoro is talking about, the palm thrust haki that sentomaru did and rayleigh did to the elephant, but theres also a step just past that, where you take that barrier haki from level 2, but make it stronger so that the haki is pushed into the object or person its blocking or punching into itself, destroying it from the inside. rayleigh used level 2 on the elephant, but level 3* on the collars ,because he destroyed them from the inside, while he merely just blocked the elephant back
This is how i understand it: Regular haki: its usually not shown, but its the regular aura that is always surronding people and what the low level users apply to their attacks Hardening: focusing your aura to create an armor, increasing your damage and defense Advanced Haki: same as hardening but you project your aura at the same time as you focus it, but the levels vary. Hyogoro was probably teaching Luffy the first step on advanced haki, projecting it by like 1mm, just enough to deflect attacks before they could reach him, but Luffy was able to project it even further, to the point wich could bypass the surface of the colar and propagating the force

3 lvls, cuz hyogoro wanted to teach luffy more advanced version after he saw him use haki and after he broke the collars he said that luffy used even more advanced version as we saw the aura is larger than ryo and first lvl probably has no aura just skin
I definitely took it as 3 levels: 1st level basic hardening, 2nd level able to repel the haki outwards to deflect, and 3rd level able to have your haki go inside the enemy and destroy from the inside.
It’s not all The Color Of Armament Ryo isn’t Armament And destroying from inside isn’t Ryou “There are things that surpass your colour of arms” . - KATAKURI . You can see that Oda is drawing the Haki/Spirit separate from the Armament. Armament is hardening your skin using Haki but it’s not all that Haki can do as you can Make an invisible armour (Ryou) And you can also destroy things from inside like how Katakuri was hurting Luffy’s fists in Armament.
So did anyone else notice that when Queen is a Brachiosaurus, he has his full left arm/front leg? It's like the mechanical arm is only needed when he is in human form? The scene with Rayleigh clears pretty much everything up. Armament Haki has always been black, but Luffy couldn't see it. Now he can, that's why post time-skip it was visible. This is basic Armament Haki. Ryuo, from what I can tell, is the force of Haki that the old man showed Luffy. This is the next step, using your Haki sort of push things and people away. The final form is the "destroying objects from within". Luffy is no forcing his Haki into the collar and the force destroyed it. 1. Regular hardening 2. Ryuo, pushing objects/people/attacks away. 3. Forcing Haki into an object or person and causing internal damage
3 level of armament haki 1. Standard black hardenening, the one Luffy has been using. 2. Invisible layer formed by controlling the flow, the one Luffy has been trying to use, the one hyogoro uses and trying to teach. 3. Eternal damage, more advanced controlling of the flow of haki, the one Luffy uses by accident, the one Rayleigh used in Sabaody. Ryou is wano’s term of calling armament haki, just like they call devil fruit power “magic” or something of that sort. However the term ryou itself has the word “flow” in it, it is implied that wano’s standard of armament haki is reaching the 2nd level, like they don’t even consider the black hardening anything, just basics, unless it stays on a blade forever, forming a black sword. Right now Luffy mastered the first level, hyogoro mastered the second level, while Rayleigh mastered the 3rd level.
So Big Mom trashed a Yonko commander, destroyed a whole prison, beat up Luffy, then withstood a giant dinosaur falling on her head WITHOUT USING HAKI!!??? and all that happened to her was for her to regain her memory and due to that fall asleep.

Hyough says something along the lines of "Ryo or Haki as you call it is coated out side the fist, I can only teach you this but you already learned do this, the level above destroys things from the inside." So there's Basic Amarmement, Ryo outside coating, and then deflection/ internal destruction
Let me clear up the difference between armament haki and Ryo. Armament Haki is essentially a sort of energy or "chi" as the Chinese would call it. What we've seen so far from standard usage is to use that energy as some sort of iron body technique. You focus the energy around your body and "harden" it. This will result in some sort of armor. Your punches will have more impact as your fist will be harder, but the energy still stays around your body so to speak. With Ryo however (if I'm understanding correctly), the energy from armament transfers into the opponent. *So it's the same energy, but instead of using it as armor, it flows directly into the enemy.* What I'm gonna say now may sound a bit voodoo to y'all, but I believe it's what Oda intends with this. As someone who's done a lot of internal martial arts (Wing Tjun specifically) I'm decently experienced with chi manipulation. What we were told during class is that there are two types of punches. One is a "muscle punch", and another one is more of a "chi punch" (bear with me). A muscle punch is what you learn in boxing for example. Using all your muscles, starting from the feet to the fist, to strike your opponent with all the power you have. Essentially this is like a very fast push that hurts a fuck ton. The impact is wide, but not very deep (doesn't mean it doesn't hurt though, a proper muscle punch will knock you out all the same, countless examples of that in fighting competitions). The chi punch at first is like a whip. Before you learn adding internal energy, you learn to relax as much of your muscles as possible and try "throwing" your fist at the opponent. The idea is that the less tension (stored energy) you have in your muscles, the more you can transfer into the opponent. The area of impact is less wide, but it goes much deeper than a muscle punch. Let alone what happens when you can directly add the internal energy (=chi, external energy=muscle power). I believe this Ryo is like a chi punch in which you directly transfer the energy into the opponent to cause internal damage. Then the "regular" armament is more like a muscle punch, but then simply with a harder surface (which is the haki energy used as armor). Compare regular armament punches to a knuckle bracelet. Ryo would then be more like a water beam sort of spouting out your fist, if that makes sense. An in-series analog would be the fishman karate, except for that it uses your own "haki energy" as a medium instead of the water of the enemy's body fluids. I hope I didn't lose y'all with my Wing Tjun explanation, but regardless of whether believe any of what I said makes sense IRL, it seems Oda is indeed going for this concept.
After reading the manga, I think, there are 2 levels of haki: - 1st haki is an invisible armor that protects you, pretty much like an invisible armor and it increases the strength of your attacks. i think armament haki explanation is pretty clear. the way i see it is that haki has 3 colors, armament, observation, conquer. we have seen that observation's skill depends on the user (how proficient someone is at using it). this is used for sensing the opponent. Armament is the basic offensive/defensive haki. it has 2 basic uses. hardening and ryou. hardening is hardening the skin. ryou is an application where user controls the haki better and directs it in a direction for attacking. what old man hyo was saying was that he can use flow but he is not the best at it. the destroying from inside part is the height of proficiency with flow. like the peak of this application of haki is to destroy things from inside.

The way I understood it: ryouu = haki, just haki, so they just use different terms. And as for armament itself, I guess there are three lvls: so, Luffy knew usual armament. Hyou was trying to teach him armament without contact, like he showed himself on Alpaca. And in this chapter he said that there is even a higher level, when your haki deals not external damage, as in just "advanced armament" (2nd lvl) but internal (which makes it the 3rd lvl). At least that's how I understood it.
Correct its just that he is stating that u can't do 3 without 2. 2 is mastered by luffy because he just performed 3.. luffy just doesn't know it..

This chapter was full of so many subversions. Instead of blocking or repelling Big Mom, Luffy gets swatted like a fly. Instead of spending the rest of the arc as O-Lin, Big Mom recovers her memory/strength. Instead of one-shotting Queen at full strength now, she then promptly falls asleep.

1.Armament black hardening
2.Ryou( Haki wave)
3.Destruction from inside out
Hyogoro said that what Luffy just did is beyond what he could teach yet, hyogoro knows ryou(wave) therefore wouldn't that infer that there are 3 levels.

I mean if you look at it, the 6 powers may be a sort of precursor to haki. After all, its whole thing is that its pushing the body to its limit so it can do things it normally couldn't, whereas haki is pushing your will to the point that it can influence things that it normally shouldn't. It's possible that much of what we've seen throughout the series has been possible because people have been tapping into degrees of haki without fully unlocking it.

First armament = black body parts for defence and offense
Ryuo = The invisible part of Haki, that can be used to deflect (like admiral was using in marine fort war, stood hands up ready to deflect) but can also punch and add this deflect to the punch for a extra force to it and makes punch stronger
Next level Ryuo = not deflection, but flowing the invisible part into your opponent (on contact of the hit) to destroy from inside-out. Massive damage buff, but... potentially, doesn’t have the haki surrounding him and therefore looses the defensive armaments. Eg. turning body parts black to help absorb damage or using invisible part to deflect (can’t turn a body part black because the cloak of haki is only in one place and therefore can’t do the first 2 levels as it’s isn’t around his body for him to manipulate while doing advanced ryuo)

Ulrich Leukam that wasnt because he couldnt use it that was purely for plot in sacrificing something to save the new Generation. Second he was able to change kaidos mind on going to marineford for an all out battle against WB and everyone in his way,he was on par with mihawk in terms of swordsmanship until he lost his arm and still could clash with wb on his ship
And dont forget that he stoped a serious punch with killing intent from akainu with his sword,which should have melted if he wasnt using sone sort of haki

Here it is. Hopefully you read this. There are 3 types of Haki:
(1) Hardening/Koka a.k.a. Black Haki. First hyped up by Vergo. This is simply hardening your skin or weapons improving their durability. This is the same one Zoro uses on his blades. This is not necessarily weaker than the rest, it is simply there to toughen your skin like Tekkai. Sometimes, this is not coloured (Cracker's Hard Biscuit), but the concept is the same.
(2A) Deflection a.k.a. Hyo's Haki. This was first used by Marigold to deflect Luffy's attacks. Unlike hardening, this takes EXTRA UNUSED HAKI from the rest of your body and uses it to deflect your opponent. That's it. There is no internal damage.
(2B) Internal Haki a.k.a. Rayleigh's Haki. Hyo says what he used, was inferior to Luffy's. This was first used by Rayleigh to destroy the collar from within. Now this becomes similar to Law's Gamma Knife. It uses your EXTRA UNUSED Haki to strike directly INSIDE someone's body. It is an advanced version of (2A).
(1) and (2) seem to be able to be mixed up. You can mix hardening and the deflection/internal Haki. However, Rayleigh's "flowing" Haki is simply an extension of Hyo's Haki.
Remember, just because this "flowing", "deflection", or "internal haki" is being introduced, it doesn't mean hardening/koka is done with. Zoro for example will focus on (1).

for what reyleigh said during the training, haki is an armor you cover yourself with, but some people can use enough to make it a weapon and then a laser like blast sends flying the elephant by reyleigh extending his palm. that means that there are 2 types of haki, physical and beyondm and luffy as been using haki to directly attack enemies, he didnt learn the other one. this might be why also luffy armament vs katakuri's make him hurt, cause he doesnt know that advanced type of haki. hyogoro mentioned haki as ryuo, the ability to cut nothing ort something like that, the same that zoro did in alabasta. zoro couldnt have advanced haki back then if that was the case. also hyogoro now said that hes trying to teach him something beyond ryuo, it maybe something without an specific name. its just advanced haki, 2 levels, or at least thats what the story implies

To as your question there's 2 levels to Arnament Haki
First level the ability to put a metal armor around your body or part this can be extended to objects as well.Allows logias to be tangible and strengthens your offensive .
Second level is the ryou the one rayliegh used to free camie. It takes the haki similar to Fisher man island technique allows the user to imbued their haki into their opponents. And as he stated is much powerful and effective.

Seems to me that ryou is just a coating of the advanced haki, i.e. a defensive version of it which hyougoro was trying to teach luffy in order to fend off attacks. However, luffy in his desperation managed to use the offensive version of the advanced haki which allows him to break the chains and this surprised hyougoro as perhaps learning offense with advanced haki may be harder than the defense he was teaching him.
Also, I don't think big mom will break out of the chains too easily coz they're made of seastone and she is a df user. She will break through it but I imagine it'll take some degree of effort.
Then maybe sengoku Shockwave on Blackbeard is the master level of armament haki??

So far we have seen armament haki used like this:
1. To be able to physically touch logias and hurt them. Ex: almost everyone in the new world.
2. Used as a protective barrier around the body like hardening. Ex: virgo or sanji vs judge
3. Extending outside the body as a protective coating around objects the user is touching. Ex: Zoro vs pica
4. Extending outside the body as a barrier force that can be used defensively or offensively. Admirals (defense). sentomaru and rayleigh (offense) and in wano it's called ryu
5. Extending outside your body and flowing into another object destroying/damaging the object from the inside out. Ex: rayleigh removing the slave collar. What luffy hope to do against kaido to bypass his scales
As the list goes higher a more advanced version of armament haki is needed. With one being the most basic version of armament haki and 5 being the most advanced that we know so far. Number 6 may even be how to coat an object permanently (making a sword into a black blade) and it being an even higher tier would explain why black blades are so rare.

So for my understanding it’s like you said, Ryuo is what the people of Wano call Haki. However it does seem Ryuo/Haki is being used differently than the rest of the world, where like explained the Ryuo/Haki is used to attack from the inside out in Wano whereas the rest of the world uses it as a hardening.

How I understand armament:
Basic armament: You can touch logias, have invisible armor around you... Ex: Amazons in Amazon Lily, Boo Chinjao grandson & sai's brother, Luffy kicking trebol, & Sanji blocking Judges spear... Are examples of basic normal haki
Koka or hardening: Is the metallic or vulcanized looking version of armament, which is just condensed haki or spirit that manifests or appears!
Ryouu or Flow: Is a technique within the armament branch of haki that allows you to control more haki by focusing on the energy or "AURA" around your body not just the haki or aura on your body.
Then ryouu or Flow is broken up into 2 levels,
The first that creates "2nd layer of armor" out of the haki or aura surrounding you ... That armor let's you hit harder & defend by deflection...
The next branch or level up of ryouu takes it a step further by allowing you to direct that deflected haki/spirit into objects or targets!

hi sawyer, i'd like to attempt to try and answer your question: i believe its 3 levels, with an asterisk on the third: we know theres black coating, the basic armament, we know what hyogoro is talking about, the palm thrust haki that sentomaru did and rayleigh did to the elephant, but theres also a step just past that, where you take that barrier haki from level 2, but make it stronger so that the haki is pushed into the object or person its blocking or punching into itself, destroying it from the inside. rayleigh used level 2 on the elephant, but level 3* on the collars ,because he destroyed them from the inside, while he merely just blocked the elephant back
This is how i understand it:
Regular haki: its usually not shown, but its the regular aura that is always surronding people and what the low level users apply to their attacks
Hardening: focusing your aura to create an armor, increasing your damage and defense
Advanced Haki: same as hardening but you project your aura at the same time as you focus it, but the levels vary. Hyogoro was probably teaching Luffy the first step on advanced haki, projecting it by like 1mm, just enough to deflect attacks before they could reach him, but Luffy was able to project it even further, to the point wich could bypass the surface of the colar and propagating the force

-Armament hardens the skin
-Ryo makes an invisible barrier around the user, that repels. Luffy apparently didn't know how to use it, so that's what hyo wanted to teach him
-The third thing makes the invisible barrier to "flow" into things the user attacks (and destroy the insides). Hyo cant use it, so it is implied that it's a level above advanced
3 lvls, cuz hyogoro wanted to teach luffy more advanced version after he saw him use haki and after he broke the collars he said that luffy used even more advanced version as we saw the aura is larger than ryo and first lvl probably has no aura just skin
I definitely took it as 3 levels: 1st level basic hardening, 2nd level able to repel the haki outwards to deflect, and 3rd level able to have your haki go inside the enemy and destroy from the inside.

The scene with Rayleigh clears pretty much everything up. Armament Haki has always been black, but Luffy couldn't see it. Now he can, that's why post time-skip it was visible. This is basic Armament Haki.
Ryuo, from what I can tell, is the force of Haki that the old man showed Luffy. This is the next step, using your Haki sort of push things and people away.
The final form is the "destroying objects from within". Luffy is no forcing his Haki into the collar and the force destroyed it.
1. Regular hardening
2. Ryuo, pushing objects/people/attacks away.
3. Forcing Haki into an object or person and causing internal damage
3 level of armament haki
1. Standard black hardenening, the one Luffy has been using.
2. Invisible layer formed by controlling the flow, the one Luffy has been trying to use, the one hyogoro uses and trying to teach.
3. Eternal damage, more advanced controlling of the flow of haki, the one Luffy uses by accident, the one Rayleigh used in Sabaody.
Ryou is wano’s term of calling armament haki, just like they call devil fruit power “magic” or something of that sort. However the term ryou itself has the word “flow” in it, it is implied that wano’s standard of armament haki is reaching the 2nd level, like they don’t even consider the black hardening anything, just basics, unless it stays on a blade forever, forming a black sword.
Right now Luffy mastered the first level, hyogoro mastered the second level, while Rayleigh mastered the 3rd level.
So Big Mom trashed a Yonko commander, destroyed a whole prison, beat up Luffy, then withstood a giant dinosaur falling on her head WITHOUT USING HAKI!!??? and all that happened to her was for her to regain her memory and due to that fall asleep.
I believe it's 3 levels. Hyough says something along the lines of "Ryo or Haki as you call it is coated out side the fist, I can only teach you this but you already learned do this, the level above destroys things from the inside." So there's Basic Amarmement, Ryo outside coating, and then deflection/ internal destruction
Let me clear up the difference between armament haki and Ryo. Armament Haki is essentially a sort of energy or "chi" as the Chinese would call it. What we've seen so far from standard usage is to use that energy as some sort of iron body technique. You focus the energy around your body and "harden" it. This will result in some sort of armor. Your punches will have more impact as your fist will be harder, but the energy still stays around your body so to speak. With Ryo however (if I'm understanding correctly), the energy from armament transfers into the opponent. *So it's the same energy, but instead of using it as armor, it flows directly into the enemy.*
What I'm gonna say now may sound a bit voodoo to y'all, but I believe it's what Oda intends with this. As someone who's done a lot of internal martial arts (Wing Tjun specifically) I'm decently experienced with chi manipulation. What we were told during class is that there are two types of punches. One is a "muscle punch", and another one is more of a "chi punch" (bear with me). A muscle punch is what you learn in boxing for example. Using all your muscles, starting from the feet to the fist, to strike your opponent with all the power you have. Essentially this is like a very fast push that hurts a fuck ton. The impact is wide, but not very deep (doesn't mean it doesn't hurt though, a proper muscle punch will knock you out all the same, countless examples of that in fighting competitions). The chi punch at first is like a whip. Before you learn adding internal energy, you learn to relax as much of your muscles as possible and try "throwing" your fist at the opponent. The idea is that the less tension (stored energy) you have in your muscles, the more you can transfer into the opponent. The area of impact is less wide, but it goes much deeper than a muscle punch. Let alone what happens when you can directly add the internal energy (=chi, external energy=muscle power).
I believe this Ryo is like a chi punch in which you directly transfer the energy into the opponent to cause internal damage. Then the "regular" armament is more like a muscle punch, but then simply with a harder surface (which is the haki energy used as armor). Compare regular armament punches to a knuckle bracelet. Ryo would then be more like a water beam sort of spouting out your fist, if that makes sense. An in-series analog would be the fishman karate, except for that it uses your own "haki energy" as a medium instead of the water of the enemy's body fluids.
I hope I didn't lose y'all with my Wing Tjun explanation, but regardless of whether believe any of what I said makes sense IRL, it seems Oda is indeed going for this concept.
After reading the manga, I think, there are 2 levels of haki:
- 1st haki is an invisible armor that protects you, pretty much like an invisible armor and it increases the strength of your attacks. (Like sanji did when he was fighting with judge)
- 2nd haki is the ability to have the haki you've clad yourself in enter your enemy and destroy them from the inside out (possibly applying concentration, focus and presence - just like fishman karate)
Hyogoro meant luffy needs to learn the upgraded level of advanced armament haki which is the 2nd level.

i think armament haki explanation is pretty clear. the way i see it is that haki has 3 colors, armament, observation, conquer.
we have seen that observation's skill depends on the user (how proficient someone is at using it). this is used for sensing the opponent.
Armament is the basic offensive/defensive haki. it has 2 basic uses. hardening and ryou. hardening is hardening the skin. ryou is an application where user controls the haki better and directs it in a direction for attacking. what old man hyo was saying was that he can use flow but he is not the best at it. the destroying from inside part is the height of proficiency with flow. like the peak of this application of haki is to destroy things from inside.
