The spare was low in air, so he escorted me to the next station to put air in the car. That was above and beyond his call of duty. Other attorneys believe it’s better to maintain majority of eye contact on the council asking the questions and occasionally look at the jury. My preference is the former. Engaging the jury, addressing them directly when answering has significant impact; eye contact will imprint a witness’s face and their answers. A person is more focused on what someone is saying when directly addressed with direct eye contact. You want the jury to remember what’s being said. After all, they are the ones who’ll deliberate and reach a verdict at the end of the trial. Eye contact with all of them, moving your eyes from juror to juror, not just one or two.

@@fletcher0411 Brooks decided to represent himself because he was grasping at straws. His lawyers had entered a guilty plea after four different psych evaluations showed he is sane and competent. The “sovereign citizen” schtick gave him what he evidently thought was a get-out-of-jail-free card. He hoped to convince the jury (or an appeal) that the court has no jurisdiction over him, that the judge is somehow not valid, that the “plaintiff” being an entity (State of Wisconsin) and not an individual meant the prosecution is not valid, that none of the injured parties made a claim against him, and that being charged as DARRELL BROOKS is not about himself, a human being, but about a “strawman” fictional entity. In addition to all this pseudolegal nonsense, is a phenomenon he calls “nullifying the law”. Now and then a jury returns a not-guilty verdict even when guilt is beyond any doubt: a perverse verdict. wikipedia says “The jury's reasons may include the belief that the law itself is unjust, that the prosecutor has misapplied the law in the defendant's case, that the punishment for breaking the law is too harsh, or general frustrations with the criminal justice system.” Anyway, only a judge may instruct the jury on the law, and judges may not tell the jury they could return a perverse verdict. Brooks keeps trying to talk about it as the jury enter or leave. Why he thought they would WANT to let him off - well, in his closing speech he says that “what happened” was God’s will, he forgave himself, he’s at peace with it, the community is healing, and his family is suffering because he’s locked up.

@@erynlasgalen1949 We had a couple, well known and loved in the community killed by being hit head on by a man in a large truck that was so mad at his ex that he said he was going to drive head on into the next vehicle he met. He was on the phone with his ex when he did it. He killed both of the people he hit head on. The man killed was the fire chief of the volunteer fire dept, she was the church secretary and a prominent 4-H leader. They headed up a blood drive every year at the church. I don't think this guy is ever getting out of prison. At least I hope not. Their children miss them, along with the entire community. The man's son was one of the first responders that showed up at the wreck. They had to take him back away from the wreck when they realized it was both his parents in the vehicle that had been hit. The man who did it walked away from the wreck. I remember he had been smoking weed and I don't know what else he had been into that night. He threatened his ex that he was going to drive through her house to kill her. He did not get to do that.

I did the same thing, looking at the questioner, and then turned to look at the jury. The jury are the ultimate decision makers. It is ABSOLUTELY 100% appropriate to do this. It is a common courtesy that people seemingly overlook.
The jury has the ultimate say, so with that, it is absolutely appropriate to do this, to address them directly, for their benefit during their deliberations.

The officer on the stand has been on the stand before. You can tell by his demeanor and how he addresses the court and during questioning. I love how he knows the boundaries of what he can and cannot do and how it drives Darrell Brooks insane. Once he realized he couldn’t pull his bullsh*t, he started stuttering over his questions and had to go back to his nonsense paper shuffling and the long pauses between questions because he has no idea what he is doing. Glad he is sentenced to life over and over again.

It’s just what we do & who we are. I was on a plane once & had a very deep & meaningful chat with the guy sitting next to me. I’m an Aussie Paramedic of 21 years & he was a New Zealander in the army. We were discussing that most people don’t understand how we do what we do, because they can’t comprehend how we live with the terrible things we see. I think people who have long careers in the emergency services, military & emergency health are born to do what we do. Once we discover our role, it just fits. And we deal with these awful things so that other people don’t have to. And I actually think it’s really sad that movies & TV have become so realistic in showing the physical & emotional trauma of critical injury, illness & death. And that people can now see the harsh reality of it in the news & on social media. It does affect you, even if you think it doesn’t. If what we saw & heard in the media didn’t affect our actions, we wouldn’t have a multi $trillion advertising industry. Things like driving a car into hundreds of people wouldn’t occur to most people without seeing & hearing that others have done the same. And at least with the emergency services, military & emergency health workers, we don’t look for these things for entertainment. We’re exposed to them because we actively try to help the people involved. And even if we are only able to help people in a minor way, like reassure people, calm them down, give comfort & understanding to the relatives of deceased people etc, we’re still actively trying to make things better for those involved. And I think that makes a big difference when it comes to being able to cope with the trauma & tragedies that we see.
I noticed after a few multi-service critical incident stress debriefs from serious car accidents, that the Paramedics directly hands on with the patients seemed (in general) to deal better with what happened, than those emergency personnel who had more peripheral roles, like the cops doing traffic control, or the firies who helped make the vehicles safe & extricate patients. And I think this is largely due to the fact that we were busy the whole time, fighting to save their lives, while the firies & cops saw more of the picture from outside & had time to dwell on the damage to the vehicles, the deceased patients, the personal effects strewn over the road & other things like that, while they were doing their just as important roles. Also, we would get them in our ambulances & leave the scene, leaving the cops to investigate & the firies to clean up the broken glass, metal, wash blood off the road etc. I really think the hands on for longer, trying to save them, identifying their injuries & how critically injured they were, made it easier in the long run to deal with it if they later died. We didn’t have to imagine what happened. We saw it. But the firies & cops saw bits & pieces then imagined the rest.
I don’t know if I’ve explained that very well, and I’m not saying we’re immune to the trauma, because there are always cases that affect us. And I have a mental photo album of scenes from various tragic or horrible incidents over my career. But I truly wish people weren’t being exposed to that kind of trauma unnecessarily. Especially when they can’t do anything about it.

The biggest problem with individuals attempting to represent themselves as non attorneys is they just don't know the law, and they are not familiar with court proceedings. I've been an expert witness a couple of times and it is common practice to answer questions while "looking" at the jurors. Pray that God frees people from the torment and that they can find peace in knowing Brooks Jr. will not be out here hurting people and getting away with evil ever again. His pity party, lying, self justifying to get away with crimes is done. This event actually could’ve been so much worse had it not been for the miraculous levels of people running towards the seriously ill and giving them CPR. Always look at the jury while on the stand. Make it appear like you’re having a conversation with them. It makes your testimony more personal and will form a connection between you and them. It makes it harder for the jury to vote against you when they feel like there is a connection 😊
This is exactly what Amber Herd tried to do but she forgot she needed to be timid and appear scared. She came across as a know it all with a bad attitude because she was speaking so “matter of fact”. Almost like the things she was saying were “so obvious” which can come across as disrespectful and arrogant. All she needed to do was make the jury sympathize with her which should have been really easy for an actor lol. But just like this monster, when you’re a narcissist it’s impossible to make yourself appear scared or like a victim. No matter how hard they try they just can’t do it. Which is why most lawyers advise them not to speak at all during trial, they always end up hurting their case the second they open their mouth 😂

The defendant’s lawyers and the prosecutors will already know the answers to the questions. The jury does not, so addressing them with the facts face to face is always the way to go. They are the final decision makers after all.

@@HatsuneChiko In general, people just hated her. We’ll never know the full story with those two, but the evidence shown is what matters in any case. People saw her putting on a facade for the jury and playing the victim, as what this case was about. In the end, her testimony contradicted the evidence. In this case, it is witnesses addressing the jury with their facts in the case.

I'm sure others have commented. Evidence is given to the court for the jury to consider. As a former officer, my training was to direct my testimony to the magistrate OR if there was a jury to the the jury. Excellent delivery of testimony by this officer.

Until you find out he lies, plants dugs, solicits crimes, drives 100mph down the road with no service lights or sirens, threatens and harasses individuals and worst of all.... Barely knows the laws he has sworn to protect....
