    I absolutely loved this album. I think it's a very logical next step in their music, and it's just so catchy, enjoyable and good. I will agree that it is less complex in its message, but only because it is more sincere. That being said, I think your points are all very valid and you explained them very well- good review!

    It's a big improvment from Notes

    Really enjoyed this review, I've read many so far and this has been the most insightful reflection on everything surrounding this album, whether that's the reduced risk taking, or sparser production that is less reminiscent of the band at their most colourful. I think About You actually showcases that contrast to the rest of the album as the track with the most heavenly production, which really pays off! Maybe this album proceeds a future album which showcases their best elements in a compact form, with the added experimentation to boot.

      I agree I feel they always do everything in twos album 1 and 2 are contrasts of each other black and pink same as 3 and 4 white and yellow this needs the same compact formula from 5 for 6 but with the experimentations this lacks blue and then red maybe. Tbh I feel like they could dump all the dlid stuff and demos and mix it into one form. Notes but concise, reduced themes in a way but also manage what they achieved with album 2 and 3. Sincere wide screen cinematic sound with experimentation strong instrumentals and reinventing the sound and formula. This spoke from the heart but it played it safe and also A LOT of these songs are throwaways or rehashes of older material. The ones that stand out the most are the most different “the 1975” or they are an evolution of the same “about you”. Wintering could have been even better if they committed to the dlid emo sound but other than that theres no variation from what they have already done. I think its their “best of” record not at their best more of a cover version greatest hits. The hearts here but the voice isn’t though I reckon next one they’ve got another monster like a brief inquiry.

    I didn't have super high expectations going into this album, considering how annoying Matty Healy got for me after I started looking at Twitter less often in the middle of 2021. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I really enjoyed this album. A lot of its messy framing, self-referential commentary and loose production sounds feel like a more interesting version of the tangled and complicated concepts shown on Kendrick's new album IMO.
    Also, hot take: I actually think Part Of The Band is a great song, as it has a beautiful arrangement and effectively unsettling lyrics. I pretty much enjoyed every song on here to some degree, even if About You has way too much reverb in the mix for me. I've been pretty hot and cold with The 1975, but they actually did it for me this time around.

    I feel they always do everything in twos. Album 1 and 2 are contrasts of each other black and pink same as 3 and 4 white and yellow this needs the same compact formula for 5 and 6. This album lacks the experimentations colour wise it’s blue so then based on this formula the experiments will end up on a red maybe. Tbh I feel like they could dump all the dlid stuff and demos and mix it into one form. Notes but concise, reduced themes in a way but also manage what they achieved with album 2 and 3. Sincere wide screen cinematic sound with experimentation strong instrumentals and reinventing their sound and formula. Wintering could have been even better if they committed to the dlid emo sound but other than that theres no variation from what they have already done. Its worth mentioning when we are together has a massive heart but I think it needed a soft piano or keys as it would have made this song! It is screaming for more drive and pace I think. Matty says it’s painting the fence but there’s no dynamic shift and I feel like the music should complement the vocals not act as a backing track. Missed potential here. I think its their “best of” record but not them “at their best” as they like to proclaim as this album is more of a cover version of greatest hits than actual songs. Its shame they decided to do “an impression of the 1975” i think it’s a waste of their talents trying to mimic copycats and for what reason? Being meta can be great and self awareness is important but not at the detriment of the songs. Being clever isn’t always being right. There is a big heart here but the voice isn’t though I reckon next one they’ve got another monster like a brief inquiry.

    I like how it says “caro-line” in the song but he still says “Caro-Lynn”

    12:55 this is an interesting thought. What if the 1975 decide to do what Blood Incantation did earlier this year and make an ambient album/EP? It's a big part of their sound with at each of their albums having an ambient instrumental piece.

    I think calling A Brief Inquiry bloated is crazy. I’ve been around since the beginning and I think it’s their best album.

    • @alex_flamer
      @alex_flamer Рік тому

      It's bloated because there are filler tracks on there that take away from the overall listening experience. The album doesn't need to be close to an hour. Most albums are better because they're short and they leave the audience wanting more. You don't want to kill your own hype by making something that becomes a slog to get through.

    When Part Of A Band released it nearly killed my hype for the album the song sucks but the follow up singles brought back some of it, is it their best album no but it's better then NOTES just a shame the album started on the wrong foot with a lead single.

    Well, maybe they should have had Taylor Swift on the album. Maybe, since rumors were going around a while ago that they were going to feature on midnights, they had a collab song in the works somewhere and it got cut. Taylor adds a lot to whatever she touches, so maybe her voice would have helped to stitch things together.

    • @alex_flamer

      At one of their shows in the UK, Taylor Swift came out and covered Robbers which surprised everyone. But it makes sense, especially since they have the same demographic of young white girls.

    this clashing of the 'everyone's a fuckup' idea alongside the band's privilege and the mockery matty launches while also trying to put away the saviour crown feels like a much worse version of one of the tensions that made me not enjoy mr morale and the big steppers. but where kendrick was coming from a very sincere place and had some understanding of the nuances of the situation, by playing halfway into the insincerity and deflection the 1975 lose that connection with me almost entirely.

    Very mid 5.5/10 the hype wasn't for me it felt a big boring and going back to their old roots overhyped this album like i said on Lorna Shore overhyped with the tracks sounding the same on each track meanwhile on 1975 it was just boring
